BASS PRO MIDWEEK MOTIVATION - Challenges change you

Hello runner friends!
Welcome back to the Bass Pro Fitness Series
MIDWEEK M😊TIVATI😊N blog. Now let's get started by talking about how we NEED challenges to make us better.

Okay... so we've all heard the saying, "If it doesn't challenge you, it won't change you" right? Well, I don't know about you but I could definitely use some change in my life. I've definitely gotten a little lax in my training and goals with no races on the calendar. And if that's you as well, it's time for a change which means it’s time for a challenge!!!
Resistance Training Improves Exercise Motivation | Breaking Muscle
Let's start by talking about how the Principle of Progressive Resistance (PRT) works and how it can strengthen us physically and mentally. PRT is a style of strength training exercise that involves the utilization of resistance and something called the overload principle... Stevie Strong explains that by combining the overload principle and the load, or resistance, muscular strength and size are increased. In other words, challenging the muscles increases their strength! That's why we all NEED challenges to keep getting better and better; something that keeps us motivated as we see these changes occur and continue to set the bar higher and higher. And we not only need to challenge ourselves physically but intellectually, spiritually, and emotionally as well. We NEED challenges that stretch us, test us, and teach us how to get out of our comfort zones and thrive.
And while there are many ways we can challenge ourselves to take our running to a new level... like signing up for a distance we might think is impossible, shooting for a PR that's always been out of our reach or preparing ourselves to show up at the start line of a race that frightens us. Whatever it might be, overcoming those challenges will make us better people all around. Because as we all know, running is a metaphor for life. What we put in is what we get out. And what we get out spills over into every other area of our lives, without exception.

So I want to challenge you today to challenge yourself! To be the best that you can be both on the racecourse and off. And to inspire you to do that... here are ten rewards Gary Blair says you can expect to receive from meeting those challenge.

A Challenge Develops Mental Toughness
It’s actually pretty simple. You either rise to meet the mental demands and physical rigors of a challenge, or you succumb to them. And because victory begins in the mind, all challenges are initially won or lost between your ears.

The very nature of a challenge sets an appropriate stage for practicing mental toughness, which by definition means a psychological edge that enables one to remain focused and confident during high-pressure situations to perform at one’s full potential.

A Challenge Stands Down Fear
A challenge is unique in that it immediately engages the fight-or-flight mechanism, and you never know how you are going to react until you are faced with it.

Fear is never a reason for quitting. It’s only an excuse for those unwilling to face their doubts, insecurities, and mental boogie man. Therefore, your first duty in rising to meet a challenge is to conquer fear and the mental resistance it brings along with it. Get rid of it quickly, or get steamrolled by it.

A Challenge Inspires Courageous Acts
The conceptual opposite of courage is cowardice. We are therefore confronted with the reality that we either habitually practice courage, or we habitually practice cowardice. Courage is remarkable in that it takes on the form of every virtue at the testing point.

When courage is tested, it manifests itself in the form of character, initiative, self-control, and responsible behavior. When cowardice is tested, it presents itself in opposite forms that include bad character, procrastination, excuses, and blame.

A Challenge Tests Your Limits
When you rise to meet a challenge, you will never be the same again. You either cope or crumble. You become better or bitter. You emerge stronger or weaker.

It has to be this way, as a challenge exists to tests your limits, to push you beyond the breaking point, and to separate you from the herd.

You’ll never know the full measure of your potential until you are tested.

A Challenge Focuses Attention
A great challenge is like a great romance. It calls for your passion and your devotion, and it demands to be the center of your attention. Rising to meet a challenge is a form of seduction. It means concentrating your energy and resources on what’s most important: keeping the fire burning!

You do that by making everything count. Everything you think, say and do must be focused on goal acquisition and on leveraging all available resources.

A Challenge Builds Self-Confidence
Think of a challenge – any kind of challenging goal. Ask yourself, what role does self-confidence play in rising to meet that challenge? The fact is that no mountains can be climbed, no hearts won, no opportunities seized, no books written, no elections won, and no victories enjoyed without self-confidence.

A Challenge Matures Perspective
Few things in life are capable of radically altering your perspective, but developing the capacity to rise to a challenge not only impacts the size of your results, it transforms your mind and expands your worldview. It changes everything.

A challenge involves psychological trauma that induces fear, self-doubt, and insecurity, while simultaneously dislodging you from your comfort zone, ultimately bringing about a superior performance.

By rising to meet a challenge, you provide yourself with undeniable proof that you have what it takes.

This proof cements in your mind that you are the type of person capable of performing great acts, and that you really can do anything you set your mind to.

A Challenge Demands Superior Execution
A challenge has limited value if not overcome, and expecting to get better results from the same old behavior will only succeed in perpetuating your current situation. It will NOT get you to another level of performance.

Great companies, lives, and families are built around extraordinary execution skills. The better you execute, the better you perform and the bigger the challenges you can take on. It’s that simple.

A Challenge Calls for an Indomitable Spirit
It is irresponsible to take on a big challenge without the will, heart, and mindset to win it, as nothing can withstand the power of indomitable spirit.

In your efforts to rise to meet a challenge, you will be buffeted and pummeled. You will be criticized and opposed. You will be attacked and assaulted. You will struggle and fall. Your commitment will be relentlessly tested, and that is precisely why a challenge calls for an indomitable, unconquerable spirit.

A Challenge Empowers Freedom
Freedom isn’t free. It requires blood, sweat, and tears. But freedom is the ultimate prize for rising to meet the rigorous demands of a challenge.

In virtually every case, the decision to rise to meet a challenge boils down to the desire for greater freedom in one’s life. This includes Freedoms From and Freedoms To.

Freedoms From:

– The monkey on your back
– The shackles of debt
– The self-limiting beliefs
– The masses
– The comfort zone
– Fear
– The opinions of others
– Settling for less…

Freedoms To:

– Focus on projects you find important
– Think and dream without limits
– Set and control the agenda
– Say no without guilt
– Showcase your talents
– Be authentic
– Succeed or fail on your own terms…

To enjoy these freedoms requires that you rise to the challenges life presents and pay the required price in full, in advance, and without complaint.

So if you've let COVID-19 or anything else rob you of your joy or steal your motivation recently, say this with me... "Today is a new day that comes with new challenges. I will no longer cower from facing these challenges but will face them head on with renewed vision and determination. I will continue to challenge myself every day from this day forward, never stopping in my pursuit of greatness, so I can be the best that I can be."
Allright... now go and tackle that challenge!!!

And so on a final note... keep reminding yourself that big changes don't happen overnight but are the result of meeting challenge after challenge. The secret to success is never giving up. Babe Ruth said it this way, "You just can' beat the person who never gives up." May that person who never gives up be YOU!!! Be that overcomer who refuses to drop out in the pursuit of the finish line.  😊

Happy Running!!!

Look at the bright side

"A happy heart makes the face cheerful, but heartache crushes the spirit." Proverbs 15:13

Last Wednesday Ultrarunner Kim McCoy, a labor and delivery nurse at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, was 270 miles into the 340-mile Last Annual Heart of the South (HOTS) road race in Huntsville, Ala when she was struck by a car and rushed to the hospital. Unfortunately Kim suffered an injury that resulted in the amputation of her right leg above the knee, as well as multiple arm fractures. McCoy’s sister, Jessica, wrote on Facebook. “As an ultra runner, Kim knows what it is like to face down a long and challenging road, and I know she has the heart and the grit to make a full recovery. When I spoke with her this morning, she was even joking about how she might be able to get into the Boston Marathon through the Achilles Track Club, and how she might be able to find a right-legged ‘sole mate’ to split the cost of running shoes with.”

And while Kim undoubtedly has a long road ahead of her, it's awesome to see that she is looking at the bright side of things. I mean she can't change what happened right? Unfortunately though, the majority of people in the same situation would have chosen to feel sorry for themselves; something that would have only made them miserable. In fact, the Bible tells us that "heartache crushes the spirit." And if heartache can be defined as great sorrow or anguish caused by the loss of someone or something, we would do well to remember two things... this life is not all there is and the Lord will always be by our side. Continually bringing those two promises to mind will give us the "happy heart" to get through any trial with a smile on our face.

So no matter what difficulties, setbacks or problems you might be facing today or will face in the future, look upward rather than inward my friend. Doing so will not only keep your eyes on Jesus but will keep your eyes off your present troubles — troubles that will one day, when we are in the presence of the Lord, be forgotten. Until then, keep a smile on your face and choose to look at the bright side of things.

Heavenly Father, thank You for promising to be with us when the troubles and trials of this life threaten to crush our spirits beyond repair. Thank You for being our place of refuge; a place that we can count on to always be there. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!!!

Make the most of each moment

"But I considered it necessary to send you Epaphroditus--my brother, coworker, and fellow soldier, as well as your messenger and minister to my need--" Philippians 2:25 CSB

50 More Funny Running Quotes to Make You Laugh
As I sat with two of my dearest girlfriends eating lunch Saturday, I couldn't help but thank God for confidantes like them. We had just enjoyed a run in the park together with some of our other friends, as we do nearly every Saturday morning, and had laughed and openly talked about life. Now here we were encouraging one another as we partook of our chips and salsa. My heart was a bit saddened though when Ashley and Rachel began to talk about where the army was going to send them next. Growing up as a military brat and living right outside of an army base, having friends come and go isn't new to me. It doesn’t make it any easier though. "Oh Lord," I prayed. "Help me to be the best friend I can be to both of these women while I have them present in my life."

And you know, friends will come and go. That's just how life works. If you've been a Christian long enough, you have probably realized by now that God may put someone into your life for a season or for a lifetime. Whichever it is, you can be sure it is for a purpose. Consider Paul's friend, Epaphroditus. He was a fellow missionary and is mentioned only one other time by name in the Bible. But Epaphroditus served a purpose so great while he was in Paul's life that Paul referred to him as a brother, a coworker, a fellow soldier, a messenger to the Church at Philippi and his own personal minister in need. Wow! Talk about making a difference in someone's life.

So make the most of each moment you have with your friends and with your family. Encourage them, love them and serve them as God calls you to; because only God knows the amount of time you will have together.

Heavenly Father, thank You for those people you put into our lives that make us better; people who encourage us, love us, serve alongside us and help us grow closer to You. Help us to be present in each moment Lord that we wouldn't miss a chance to be remembered by someone for doing good and making their life a little brighter by letting Your light shine through us while we can. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Spiritual training is of the greatest value

"For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come." 1 Timothy 4:8 NIV

blog.bible - Equipping you to encounter God in the pages of Scripture
Like most runners around the world, ultramarathoner Alyssa Clark, originally from Bennington, Vermont but currently living in Italy, never dreamed that COVID-19 would prohibit her from running outside. But on March 9, 2020, everything changed she said. "We went from being able to travel, run, [and] walk freely, to being confined to our homes..." Then she started getting notifications that all her races were being canceled. Not one to waste her training though, Alyssa set out to build upon it by running a marathon every day beginning March 30; thirty of which she did on her treadmill at home before the restrictions were lifted and she could head back outside. At the time the article from Runner's World was published, Alyssa had finished 85 marathons (with a goal of completing 100) and broken the world record for most consecutive days running a marathon.

And you know, while physical training, as this story illustrates, has many benefits including increased endurance and discipline, you and I can spend so much time training our bodies that we neglect the training that is truly important... spiritual training. You see, while physical training "is of some value," training for godliness has immeasurable value in this “present life and the life to come." Which means putting our all-out efforts into the pursuit of being like Christ will reap far greater benefits than breaking a world record that will be broken by someone else or receiving a medal or trophy that will rust or be thrown away. Spiritual training, with an effort equal to that of a professional athlete in the strictest of training, will reap the benefits of a better life now and a guarantee of eternal life later.

So by all means, treat your body like the temple that it is my friend. Eat well, get sufficient sleep and train your body to be strong and healthy so you can serve your church and others to the best of your ability throughout your lifetime. But always put a priority on your spiritual training by reading the Word daily and working tenaciously to be more like Christ.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the reminder that spiritual training has far greater value than physical training. Lord help us to remember that the two are connected because we can serve better when our bodies are healthy and our minds are clear. Help us to develop the discipline to train our minds, spirits, and bodies in the way You have called us to do. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!!!

We must be willing to go

And then he told them, “Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone. Anyone who believes and is baptized will be saved. But anyone who refuses to believe will be condemned.“ Mark 16:15-16 NLT

Greg Laurie Leads 'Jesus Revolution Style' Baptism at California Beach; Over 550 Baptized - The Christian Post
"I will go where You send me. To the ends of the earth, Just say the word and I'll go..." were the words I was singing along to on my run yesterday morning as I began to tiptoe through the wet grass because I didn’t want to get my new running shoes dirty as I made my way to the trail. “Melissa,” I felt the Spirit say. “You must be willing to get your shoes dirty because you must be willing to go where I call you to go. And you must be willing to get your hands dirty too.” “Oh my,” I immediately thought to myself. "The majority of people in this world - Christians included - won't reach out to the lost if it means getting their shoes dirty Lord, much less getting their hands dirty. Which means they aren’t going where You are calling them to go. They aren't going to the lost in the inner cities. They aren't reaching out to the unsaved on the side streets and small towns and they certainly aren't going to their neighbors' home whose name they probably don't even know. Please help me to be obedient to go wherever it is you call me Lord no matter the cost.”

And you know, God is calling each one of us to go into dirty places. He is even calling us to go into places that might make us downright uncomfortable. All to share the Good News with people who might be considered to be unloveable, unreachable, modern-day lepers, or beyond saving. Why? Because God loves the lost! And because of His great love for the lost, He has commanded you and me to "go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone." That means it is every believers' duty, commission, assignment, and responsibility to go and bear witness to the Message of Salvation wherever it is we are called so that those who come to believe in Christ by our efforts "will be saved."

So let each one of us be willing to walk into places where our shoes and hands might get dirty that we might fulfill the Great Commission knowing there has never been a greater need in our world than now for the lost to hear about the saving grace that comes only through Jesus Christ. Are you willing?

Heavenly Father, thank You for being a God who provides the peace that surpasses all understanding. As we look around at all the dissension, chaos and rioting in our nation and in our world today Lord, help us to understand that without You, there is no peace that we might truly grasp how important it is for us to share the Good News. Help us to love others as you do Lord and be bold in sharing the Gospel. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

BASS PRO MIDWEEK MOTIVATION - The power of Encouragement

Hello runner friends!
Welcome back to the Bass Pro Fitness Series
MIDWEEK M😊TIVATI😊N blog. Now let's get started by talking about how receiving encouragement and giving it back can help keep you motivated to lace up those running shoes every day. And maybe even motivated enough to tackle that race on your to-do list.

Okay so let's talk about what it means to be motivated. If motivation is defined as the general desire or willingness of someone to do something, then many times being motivated simply requires some type of stimulus. Or something that would spur or incite someone to action. Would you agree?

Well+Being Best of Fitness Survey Winners | Washingtonian (DC)

So what if the answer to getting that stimulus to become motivated or to stay motivated comes down to one word? Encouragement

Rock 'n' Roll Madrid Marathon

So let's look at the research published by factgoods.com that supports the belief that there is power in receiving encouragement and for giving encouragement to others.

A new study, conducted by Y. Joel Young and colleagues at Indiana University Bloomington in 2019, was conducted to evaluate encouragement as a character quality. These researchers hoped to find a way of measuring encouragement to enhance psychologists ability to counsel their clients. According to the study, a genuine natural of encouragement is a character strength that you benefit from just as much as those being encouraged. By encouraging, people will like you more and others will like themselves, and it circulates to create an environment that represents the “good life”

According to Dr. Paul Freeman, athletic performance is not just based on natural skill and level of training, but on frame of mind. Dr. Freeman claims that athletes value from words of encouragement from professionals, teammates and parents, though it can come from anywhere. Even something as simple as a tank top with the motivational quote “YOU CAN DO IT”, can go a long way.

running | Best Race Signs | Page 24

So here's where it gets good. The researchers went on to say...

Now that you have all of this in mind, it’s clear to see why quotes are important and how positive words of encouragement can benefit in all areas of life- school, sports, work, our relationships, and even our finances.

Start every day with inspirational quotes, surround yourself with supporters, and enjoy the benefits of words of encouragement.

So to help you start your day off with some inspirational quotes, I asked some of my favorite supporters and the most faithful encouragers I know to share some words about encouragement and why it is so important to give and to receive it. And this is what they said...

Encouragement is all the fuel I need. Running a 5k this past Saturday reminded me of the power of an encouraging word. As I pushed myself on the course the encouraging words of others become that much needed wind that aided me. To be reminded of my soon victory, to be acknowledged for my effort and to be inspired by their presence was all the encouragement I needed. As I was encouraged, I felt obligated to encourage others as I passed them. It costs us nothing to encourage others along the way, but to the recipient it is priceless. Be an encouragement. - Sean Wilson

Yes Sean!! When I ran my first 5k in Eldon, the encouraging words when I passed someone fueled me! I even asked some walkers if they would run with me and they did. Seeing Melissa on the way helped, then my friend came back when she finished and was telling me not to stop until I hit the finish line. All of this helped me get my PR of 34.26 minutes. It was the most amazing feeling and the most positive experience I have had in a “competition” ever!- Melissa Whittle

Running is soooooo mental! It’s easy to get in your head if you are struggling! Having others to encourage you, who are proud of you and happy for you no matter what.... you make the best friends running with an encouraging group. - Jill Sigman

I work with the XC kids and have an opportunity to encourage them daily. They are all ability levels so it can be easy to compare yourself with others. I remind them to be the best "you" you can be and don't try to be "as good as" another runner. A person's ability will sometimes vary from day to day due to any number of factors, I. E., Hydration, sleep, recovery, etc. We have to keep our expectations realistic but encouragement is the simplest thing we can do to help someone, even a complete stranger! A kind word when you are struggling can make a world of difference. I always try to be sincere in encouraging rather than "you're almost there" or "it's just around the corner. "- Tiffany Reed

Our body is a power plant and when we run out of fuel emotionally, physically, mentally, or spiritually; encouragement serves as a refueling station and puts a little more fuel in the tank to cross the finish line.- Jay Tiegs

"Run like your Grandma is watching"... Do you hear her telling you "Keep going, honey. I'm proud of you." It's what the mind needs to persevere under stress. Encouragement from others flips that extra push to speed up, keep going or don't quit. - Bri Sides

I can be on a death march pity party for myself, but there is something about someone going by and giving you positive encouragement. It is like a light switch. You suddenly start thinking, they are right, I do got this. And when your mindset changes, it is much easier to make it to the finish line. - Rachel Bowers

I really feel like that is one of the big differences in ultra runners from road runners. The ultra community is so supportive of each other and will offer food or water from their pack to fellow runners in distress or suffering in the middle of the night. I travel a lot out of state to races and can't tell you how many times I have been saved by the support I get from my friends via text or DM during a dark moment or long lonely night on a trail. It makes me stay in the game so I don't let them down also. Encouraging others cost nothing and you never know when it may just be what someone needed at that moment. If I pass a runner that is walking in an ultra, I always stop to walk with them for a moment to make eye contact and ask them how they are doing or if they need anything. Sometimes I will invite them to pick it up with me and start running again so we both benefit from the company. I have even stopped and ask the dfl if I could hug them before because I admired them so much for their effort. Never under estimate the power or your sincere encouragement or moment with someone. - Ed Green

As a back of the pack runner, it means a lot to me when people stay on the sidelines or the finish line to cheer on the final finishers. Spending so much time out on the course is physically and mentally exhausting, especially in high mileage races. Having the encouragement of the crowd gives me the strength to push through.- Rose Chapman

Do you just love these or what??

We should seize every opportunity to give encouragement. . Encouragement is oxygen to. the soul.. George M. Adams. RipLB * 3.2… | Life quotes, Encouragement, George

And so on a final note... I hope you will remember that words of encouragement can inspire someone to keep pressing on to the finish line when they feel like giving up. They can renew a person's spirit and strengthen their resolve like nothing else can. Encouraging words have incredible power! They truly do. So let us be known as encouragers everywhere we go... in our homes, in our places of work, and on the racecourse. Let us be a blessing to others with our speech that we might make a difference in their lives and inspire them to do the same in the lives of others. Can you just imagine the ripple effect? So get out there and encourage someone today! After all that's what runners do right??  Right!😊

I know that You are good

"And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them." Romans 8:28 NLT

Praise will pave way to Victory - Set Apart By His Grace
I remember vividly the events of July 21, 2019. It was a busy morning as I drove from my home in Crocker to the Bass Pro Shops in Springfield for an ambassador meeting before heading to Kansas City to join a group of friends for the Wonder Woman race that was taking place the following day. As their coach, I was beyond excited to be running with them! But my excitement soon turned into anxiousness upon receiving a call I will never ever forget from my pastor's wife and dear friend Carole."Do you think I need to call an ambulance?" she asked after worriedly explaining what Pastor John's symptoms were. "Most definitely,” I emphatically said. “Let’s hang up so you can do it right now.” And upon hearing the phone go silent, I started to cry as I earnestly and whole-heartedly began to pray for this man who I highly regarded as both a mentor and friend, a man that I loved like a brother and with whom I had served with for more than a decade.

And while I'd like to say that it was nothing serious, it was. Pastor Shaw had suffered a stroke and had a long battle ahead of him to regain his speech, memory and strength. In fact, it would take many months of therapy for him to even be able to preach again. But one year later, praise God, Pastor John is back in the pulpit and is as strong as ever! And do you know what he said when I recently asked him what the greatest thing he had come to know because of this experience was? He said, "I know that God is good." Wow! And while you and I may not always understand the reasons the Lord allows us to experience pain, heartache, suffering, sickness and sorrow on this earth, we can trust in the promise that He will cause all those things to "work together” for our good and “for the good of those who love God." And the Lord not only worked this situation for Pastor John's good as it gave him a renewed realization of the goodness of God, but for the good of our church family who also gained a renewed realization of His goodness.

So whatever it is you might be going through today my friend, whether it be good, bad, or even downright ugly, look up and smile. If you are a believer, you can have confidence knowing the Lord “causes everything,” that means all your struggles, problems and difficulties, to work together for your good as well.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the reminder that our pain is never wasted. You take every piece of our lives - the pretty pieces and the ugly ones - and form them into a masterpiece that is a unique work of art. Knowing this, help us to trust You in all situations and to declare with our lips and with our lives what we know to be true... that You are good, at all times and in all situations. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!!!

True contentment is priceless

"Yet true godliness with contentment is itself great wealth. After all, we brought nothing with us when we came into the world, and we can’t take anything with us when we leave it. So if we have enough food and clothing, let us be content." 1 Timothy 6:6-8 NLT

Why I'm Obsessed with the Fits Light Runner Socks | Outside Online
"Oh no!" I cried as I rummaged through my backpack looking for socks early Saturday morning. Having just finished up a session of ‘yoga in the park’, I was wearing sliders and needed to quickly transition into running shoes for the run that was to immediately follow; a run that I was leading. "Oh boy," I said again out loud as I remembered putting them into my running shoes the night before but deciding at the last minute to bring a different pair. At the realization that my socks were still at home, I began to pray, "Lord I just know there's a pair of socks in this van. Can you help me find them?" And indeed there was a pair of socks! As I dug through a bag a friend had asked me to drop off at the thrift store but had forgotten about, I found a pair that must have belonged to her husband. They were way too big and pretty worn out but guess what? After a few adjustments, they worked! And all I could say was, "Thank you Jesus. I just knew You would give me socks."

And how did I know with such certainty that the Lord would provide you might ask? Because in the many years since making the decision to follow Christ with my whole heart, He has NEVER failed to provide for my needs. Not once. Now I haven't always gotten everything I've ever wanted but I have always gotten everything I've ever needed. And do you know what else? I've found that by being content with only what I need like having just "enough food and clothing," to get by that I am really in need of very little. In fact, I've come to know that all I really need is Jesus. It's no wonder then that Paul, who felt the same way, said that "true godliness with contentment is itself great wealth." You see, contentment is defined as a state of happiness and satisfaction. And if that state, or particular condition we are in, is based solely on the state of our relationship with Jesus Christ, it can not be taken away and is not dependent on the things we have or own - which means the state of being truly content is priceless.

So if you find yourself discontent with life today, I urge you to seek the Lord with all your heart my friend. He is the only source of true happiness and satisfaction and He longs to give you what you need.

Heavenly Father, thank You for being our source of peace and contentment in a world that says we need things and riches to be happy. Oh Lord, let our hearts be satisfied with having only our needs met that we wouldn't be distracted to seek the things we want, which is a pursuit that leads believers astray. Help us to be content with having You and You alone God. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!!!

Test it against the Truth

"Do not treat prophecies with contempt, but test all things. Hold fast to what is good." 1 Thessalonians 5:20-21 BSB

Bible Study for Dec. 11: God's Word Fills My Heart - The Christian Index
While walking and talking with one of my best friends earlier this week, we had to laugh at a memory our conversation sparked. "Remember that time I got you to run a half marathon because I told you the course was flat?" "Yeesss...." he answered rolling his eyes. "The race that was really nothing but hills?" "That's the one," I replied chuckling. "I can't believe I had forgotten about those hills! For real my memory from running the race the year before told me they were flat." After we both then had a good laugh, I said, "Well I guess you should have looked at the course map instead of taking my word for it." "Yes," he replied smiling. "I guess I should have."

And you know, this really got me thinking. Because you and I trust our friends, we will generally believe most everything they say. Likewise, because we trust our pastors and those in authority, we will generally believe most everything they say as well... without checking the facts. But as the story of the race showed, not checking the facts can can get us in big trouble. That's why Paul urged the church at Thessalonica to "test all things." That means, when it comes to spiritual matters, you and I should always check what a person says to be true against what the Bible says to be true. And then we are to "hold fast to what is good" and true and reject what is false.

So in a world where there are so many opinions, I urge you to check the facts my friend. Compare what someone says is true against the Truth. If it doesn't align with the Word of God, then reject it because it is simply untrue, no matter how many other people agree with it or say it is so.

Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us the Bible to guide, guard and protect us. Compel us as believers Lord to seek the Truth in all matters that we would not be led astray by false doctrines and deceiving spirits, especially in these last days when there is so much false truth in the world. Give us utter discernment in these matters Lord. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

He makes us clean

"Then a leper came to Jesus, begging on his knees: “If You are willing, You can make me clean.” Moved with compassion, Jesus reached out His hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” He said. “Be clean!” Mark 1:40-41 BSB

Befriending the homeless with weekly street dinners
On June 7, Lauren Larson, 36, set out for a 10-mile trail run on Emerald Mountain in Colorado. About 7 1/2 miles into the run though, after she stopped to let two bikers pass, Lauren said, "I maybe took two or three strides. I feel like I tripped with my right foot. I extended my left foot out to sort of catch myself and hit it just right with the impact." Thankfully one of the bikers saw Lauren break her leg and called out to her partner on the other bike. Lauren said that her "rescuers could have cited health concerns and either not helped her or done a lot less by simply waiting with her from a distance (because of COVID-19) for Search and Rescue. Instead, they took matters into their own hands." The two compassionate strangers lifted her up and transported her down the mountain. Lauren is now healing after having had surgery to install a plate and a few screws.

And you know, when it comes to infectious viruses or conditions that warrant a person to distance themselves from others, the Bible tells us that when a person had leprosy, a highly contagious disease that causes severe, disfiguring skin sores and nerve damage in the arms, legs, and skin areas around the body, they were literally shunned and forced to live alone outside the city gates. And not only were they required to live out their days in solitude but they would never again experience the feel of another person's touch because no one would go near them. Can you just imagine that? But Jesus had compassion on those afflicted. In fact, although He could have merely spoken the words, "Be clean!" and the leper would have been healed, "Jesus reached out His hand and touched" him. Oh what a compassionate God we have!

And you know what? Jesus is still reaching out His hand and touching those who ask to be cleansed of their maladies today. In fact, there's no one too dirty or too plagued with the disease of sin that Jesus will not touch, forgive, redeem, and restore if they would only cry out, "Make me clean."

Heavenly Father, thank You for not turning away from us because of our transgressions. Thank You for being so compassionate that You would reach out to touch the dirtiest of sinners that they would be healed and made new if they would only ask. Oh Lord, help us to be bold in sharing the Message of Salvation with the lost that they would finally feel the touch they have been seeking. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

BASS PRO MIDWEEK MOTIVATION - Run like a kid

Hello runner friends!
Welcome back to the Bass Pro Fitness Series
MIDWEEK M😊TIVATI😊N blog. Now let's get started by talking about how behaving like a child can get you motivated to try new things and run better!

Okay, so raise your hand if you're training for an important goal. Raise your hand if the pursuit of that goal is taking all the fun out of running. Now raise your hand if you’re not training for anything specific but running is just no fun anymore and you can't figure out why or how you can bring the joy back into the sport you once loved so much. Wow! That’s a lot of hands!

Running Games For Kids - Gulf Coast Weekend

So before COVID-19 shut down our  education system, I had the blessing of being "Coach Mimi" to the kids in several elementary schools as part of my job as the Wellness Coordinator of our local county health department. And let me tell you, "Coach Mimi" is one of my favorite titles in the world! So you can bet that I've learned a lot from these kids about running with joy simply by watching them. Here are a few of those things we could all learn from them to put the fun back in running.

Top 9 Agility Ladder Drills - A 30-Minute Speed Ladder Routine to Try

1. An agility ladder can be a game changer.
I'm not even joking!! I noticed the kids would get bored running laps in the same place all the time. And although the kids couldn't change the place they had to run, I told them that they could always ‘change up’ the place they had to run so we added agility ladders. And the kids loved it! They were shown some drills and then allowed the freedom to do the ones they wanted to do. There were no other rules except to continue moving for a set amount of time. So why don't you try it? And get rid of the rules too! You'll not only have fun but will be improving your Speed, Agility, and Quickness.

Agility Cone Workout to Improve Coordination and Speed | Shape

2. Cones can also be a game changer.
Don't have cones? Use milk jugs or something similar. Kids love cones and you should too!! They are versatile and are also perfect for improving your Speed, Agility, and Quickness. And do you know what the kids love to do? They love setting up obstacle courses where they will run sideways through the agility ladder and then sprint quickly back and forth through the cones. They are having so much fun that they have no clue that they are becoming better runners!

Should I Give Up On Running? Quitting Running Isn't The Easy Option.

3. Bail on a bad workout.
Kids don't waste their time and effort when they have a bad day and neither should you. One run won't make or break a training plan but one run can make you unmotivated to get back out there. So when the run isn't fun, go do something else! And be like a kid and don't feel bad about it either. Toss the guilt! Tomorrow is another day. Kids have a million tomorrows right?

Fartlek Training: What is it and does it work?

4. Embrace Fartleks.
Just say the name fartlek to a kid and they will laugh! The kiddos I was blessed to coach would giggle and make jokes about fartleks which made them even more fun. "Hope you don't fart on your fartlek" they'd yell to one another as they sprinted at full speed to the object I told them to run to. And if you don't know what a fartlek (swedish for "speed play) is, it's simply picking a random object and running as fast as you can to it and then slowing down for a bit only to pick another random object and do it again. And hey if you happen to fart on your fartlek, don't be afraid to laugh about it too. Remember... you are trying to channel your inner child.

VOICE OF THE PEOPLE: June 14, 2019 | Local-Perspectives | Opinion | The Chronicle Herald

5. See the possibilities.
In my first year of coaching, I asked the kids why they wanted to be in the running program I was teaching. The majority of them said things like, "so I can have fun" or "so I can get faster" but one of these precious children said, "so I can lose weight." Now that broke my heart! That was not something a child so young should have to worry about. And as I watched him for the first couple of weeks, my heart began to stir; at each session, this young boy looked down as he made a concentrated effort to do a run/walk while the other kids around him sprinted and ran effortlessly. One day I purposely walked alongside him and said, "You know, I've been watching you for a while and you're a really good runner." "Really?" he asked as he looked up at me. "Really," I said as I patted him on the back and smiled. And you know what? That child never walked with his head down again! He went on to claim many of the awards we gave out that year including Most Improved! Now how do you like that? When given the right words, children see and believe that anything is possible just as we should. And here’s a word for you... anything is possible!

Run with joy | The chronicles of a last Orkoiyot monk warrior of the Kalenjin tribe

And on a final note... I hope you will remember that growing old is inevitable but growing up is totally optional. And, if you ask me, it's totally overrated too. So be like a child and run with joy! Get excited about the small stuff. Stop to smell the flowers and take in the beauty and brilliance of each new sunrise the Lord blesses you with. Cast aside your agenda and your preconceived notion of what your run is supposed to look like from time to time and just run with abandon! You'll be so glad you did. ðŸ˜Š

Overlook those transgressions

"The discretion of a man makes him slow to anger, And his glory is to overlook a transgression." Proverbs 19:11 NJKV

Looking in my rearview mirror as I drove to the pool early yesterday morning for some aqua running, I spotted a tailgater. "Dang," I thought to myself. "This guy is way too close. I wish he'd back off." But he didn't. For more than 15 miles this stranger followed me way too closely along the hills and corners of Highway 17 - a narrow two-lane highway with nowhere for him to pass or for me to pull over. By the time we finally reached a spot where there was a passing lane, it was all I could do not to glare at him as he flew past me. "What a jerk," I said out loud. And then I felt it.... conviction. “What if he was in a hurry to witness the birth of his child?” I thought to myself. “What if he was late picking up his mother from the airport? What if he was rushing to be with a sick friend? What if? What if?” So many thoughts ran through my head but ended with this one, "Melissa, what if you had just prayed for him? Wouldn't that have been a better reaction?" Of course the answer was yes. And so that's what I did.

And you know, when it comes to anger, whether it be the boiling kind that was slowly coming up in me or the explosive kind that causes a person to totally lose control, the Bible is clear that you and I should be "slow” to exhibit it lest we speak or act in a way contrary to the way a believer should. You see, it is a person's "glory to overlook a transgression," because shrugging off a perceived wrong displays the discipline of character and the fruit of the Spirit that marks a follower of Jesus Christ. And it's this fruit displayed in our lives that not only compels the lost to seek Him, but compels us to love others unconditionally.

So be careful to practice discretion at all times my friend. Doing so will not only prevent you from doing or saying something in haste that you will later regret, but will guard your witness for Christ and allow you to be an example of the Father’s love to those who have transgressed against you.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the Holy Spirit who lives inside us and stirs our hearts and minds when we are thinking or behaving in ways contrary to what we should be. Help us to be an example to the world of what it means to love like Jesus and to forgive as He has forgiven us. Help us to be a light in this dark world Lord. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!!!

Friends are a gift from God

"And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near." Hebrews 10:25 NLT

I couldn't put my car in park fast enough upon pulling up to the start of the Rock Island Road Race in Eldon Saturday where my friends were gathering for our first real race in months.  "Hey you guys!" I yelled as I literally jumped out and rushed to talk to them. And it was obvious that they all felt the same way! After not "meeting together" in person for so long, it was great to catch up and hear all their words of encouragement. In fact, this group of friends that I like to refer to as my 'running peeps' is so encouraging that they finished their races and then came back to help me finish mine! They knew I wasn't fully back to running because of a hamstring strain and would be walking most of the 15k. But not only did they come back, these amazing peeps whom I dearly love formed an arch for me and the other last place finisher to run under. Do you just love that or what?

And you know, this story is a perfect example of why the Lord not only gave us friends but urged us to meet with them regularly. He knew we would need these relationships to keep us motivated and uplifted! And when it comes to being edified or uplifted, consider the greater value of having fellow believers as friends. You see, while a friend - defined as a person whom one knows and with whom one has a bond of mutual affection - is beneficial, Christian friends share a mutual bond between one another and also with our Savior, Jesus Christ. This type of friendship is priceless because these companions will not only encourage us to make it to the finish line of a race but will encourage us to press on to reach the end of our spiritual race so we can receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us

So "let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near." Oh aren't you glad God gave us friends? I sure am!

Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us friends that we can lean on and who share our love for You. These relationships serve to encourage us in so many ways and I pray that we would never have to be socially distanced from them ever again. Help us to be always looking for ways to lift up and help our Christian brothers and sisters that they would stay faithful in these last days." It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

God knows those who trust Him

“ The LORD is good, A stronghold in the day of trouble; And He knows those who trust in Him.“ Nahum 1:7 NKJV

As I stood in the kitchen at work yesterday, watching the microwave count down as I waited for my lunch to heat up, I was struck out of the blue with an epiphany so overwhelming that it made me cry. “Man, my life is really good," I thought to myself. "I’m not rich but I’ve never been without food. I have a job I absolutely love. The sun is shining through the window. I have an amazing family that I wouldn't trade for anything. God granted me this day and gave me the strength and ability to run a few miles before clocking in. But most of all, my life is good because I have a God who 'is good,' who ‘knows’ me and who can be trusted to be my ‘stronghold in the day of trouble.’"

And you know, the Lord not only knows me but He knows all those who put their trust in Him. Do you truly understand what that means? The reality of it is mind-boggling! J.J. Packer explains it this way, “I am graven on the palms of His hands. I am never out of His mind. All my knowledge of Him depends on His sustained initiative in knowing me. I know Him because He first knew me, and continues to know me. He knows me as a friend, one who loves me; and there is no moment when His eye is off me, or His attention distracted from me, and no moment, therefore, when his care falters." Wow! Is that amazing or what?

So during this time when nothing seems to be certain except that each new day will bring new troubles, let us declare that God is good. Let us continue to put our trust in the One who knows everything about us and yet loves us anyway. And let us find rest in the goodness of God.

Heavenly Father thank You for loving us with a love so great that it would lead You to sacrifice your one and only Son so that we could have a relationship with You. Help us to trust You as we look at the troubles in the world around us and to remember that You are a stronghold we can run to for shelter.  It’s in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!!!

Run to Win

"Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it." 1 Corinthians 9:24 ESV

chaski challenge
With so many races canceled, many pro runners are looking for opportunities to win some money and break some records. Something many of them got a chance to do over the weekend when they took on the Chaski Challenge. In this event offering cash prizes, eight treadmill world records were beaten but only one runner went beyond 50 miles - Brooks runner Mario Mendoza who broke the 100k record. Starting hours before the rest of the pros, the Bend, Oregon, resident started to hurt after just 10 miles. After feeling better around the 50K, he started to turn it around. The final challenge came around the 45-mile mark. Still off record pace, he knew he had to push his pace. He did so over the last 15 miles, surpassing the pace and going on to get the record with a 6:39:25, beating the previous mark by 1:10. “It was awful,” Mendoza kind of joked on the live stream after the run. “I have pretty awful blisters with some blood, and oh gosh, that was awful.”

And you know, there's a reason why Paul used the analogy of a race to describe the Christian life. Running, especially long distances, is hard. Very hard. It's also painful and downright awful at times, requiring sacrifice, daily discipline and strict training. And while this considerable effort is what it takes to make it to the finish line of a grueling race, winning that race and obtaining the first place prize requires extreme effort, sacrifice and self-control. And this is exactly the way Paul said that you and I should approach our Christian walk - running in such a way to obtain the prize of eternal salvation - devoting ourselves day in and day out to Bible study, prayer and worship, in relentless pursuit of being more like Christ, witnessing to the lost and fulfilling the calling He has placed on our lives.

So at a time when it's becoming harder than ever to talk about Jesus much less follow Him, let me remind you of something... no matter how close you get to the finish line, even if you can see it up ahead, if you drop out before you cross it, you will forfeit the prize. You will get what's called a DNF (Did Not Finish) and you will get no second chance... period. So stand strong my friend. Continue to follow Christ no matter what it costs! Continue to run the race with all your might so that one day you will receive the prize you have been working so hard to obtain! I promise it will be worth it.

Heavenly Father, thank You for your Word that clearly tells us that the Christian life will not be easy. Thank you, though. that the Word is also clear that we are never alone and that staying faithful will be worth any pain and suffering we might experience along the route. Give us the strength, endurance and wisdom to keep running the race Lord. Not just as someone who wants a medal though, but as someone who wants to break the tape and come in first place. Let us run to win! It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!!!

MIDWEEK MOTIVATION - Take back your enthusiasm

Hello runner friends!
Welcome back to the Bass Pro Fitness Series
MIDWEEK M😊TIVATI😊N blog. Now let's get started by talking about how to get out of the running funk you might be in and get your running mojo back.

Can Exercise Cause Depression? | Outside Online

So what exactly does it mean to get your running mojo back? It means to gain back your confidence, enthusiasm and motivation after a period of inactivity, apathy, or lack of progress.

How to Start Running | Running for Beginners

So as a long distance runner and a running coach, I know what it's like firsthand to lose my mojo and the reasons that cause it because I've lost it more than once. I also know some of the many reasons other runners lose their motivation to lace up and head out the door. And you can bet those reasons are as varied as the solutions. What works for me may not work for you. But hey... I hope it does!

So here are just three of the many reasons I've seen runners lose their mojo and some tips to get it back:
The Best Running Watches Of 2020 | Coach

1. You are running, running and then running some more and the pace your Garmin displays never goes down. You're not seeing any gains and you're getting frustrated and are nearly ready to throw in the towel! Whoa! Been there, done this one. My solution? Ditch the Garmin for a while! Get out there and just run. This is the deal. You probably know your average pace, most runners do. But when you're in a funk, you tend to settle for that pace with your Garmin as your witness. So leave it at home for a while! It's going to feel weird but do it anyway. And don't wear it and think to yourself, "I'm not going to look at it" because you'll be lying. It's too tempting. So get out there and run at whatever pace feels good. Heck, even throw in some fartleks!! The thing is to make it fun and new again!

4 Aspects Of Running Perfectly Depicted In Books - Women's Running ...

2. You find yourself saying things like, "Ugh! I HAVE TO get in 12 miles for my training plan today." This is a no-brainer. Change your mindset!!! Change your HAVE-TO’S to GET-TO’S! There is perhaps no quicker way to lose your enthusiasm and motivation than by losing your perspective! Friend, if you have the ability today to get out and run, you are blessed! Think about all the people that can't run because of sickness, disease, disabilities or injuries. And then thank God you have legs that can move, lungs that are strong, and a body that is healthy! Because you have these things, you GET TO do this one thing that thousands of other people around the world can only dream about. You GET TO run!!!

Get outdoors and join a running group this summer

3. You find yourself saying, "I am so tired of running alone!" This too is a no-brainer! Find some friends or a running group. And if there's not one in your area, create one! Some of the biggest and best running groups in the nation were started by people who were simply tired of running alone. But if you're saying to yourself, "I can't because I live in a rural area." Or, "I have to run at strange times because of my job,” that’s okay too. Find an online friend or group to hold you accountable and to talk to about your runs. There are so many running groups that you can be a part of. Interact with them frequently and you'll soon find yourself motivated because of the encouragement you'll receive. Then make plans to run with them on the weekend! The anticipation of seeing those friends in person you have talked to online during the week will keep you energized!

And on a final note, I hope you'll remember that while life has its' ups and downs, reminding yourself of the many reasons you have to smile can easily turn most of those downs into ups. It's all about perspective and gratefulness. Be thankful for the things you can do today - because guess what? There will be a day when you can no longer do them. That day will come for every one of us. But if today is not that day, get out there and run with a smile on your face and joy in your heart!😊

Happy Running!!!

Psalm 95:1
Grateful

Finally, don’t beat yourself up. Losing your mojo is not a weakness. Consider it a “phase” in your running routine, and have hope and confidence, knowing that phases pass.

Live out your Christian walk

"Even at that hour of the night, the jailer cared for them and washed their wounds. Then he and everyone in his household were immediately baptized. He brought them into his house and set a meal before them, and he and his entire household rejoiced because they all believed in God." Acts 16:33-34 NLT

10 Effective Ways to Manage Hiking With Back Pain - ArborExplorer
"Went to church this morning and towards the end of the service I went to the stage and knelt down on the steps and asked God to remove the darkness of hate from my heart so I could see the light of his love for I was ashamed of turning my back on Him to begin with. I asked Him to lead me through the remainder of my life and allow me to do his works and spread his word. Afterwards me and the pastor talked and he's preparing a baptism." Wow! These were the words posted Sunday night by my friend, Joseph Berry, a fellow runner who made the decision to be baptized. And do you know who he said influenced his decision more than anyone? His yoga instructor. A woman who lived out her Christian walk and lovingly told him about Jesus. Do you just love that or what?

And you know, the way a person lives really can influence someone to follow Christ. Consider the story of Paul and Silas. After casting out a demon in a slave girl, they were severely beaten and thrown in prison with a jailer assigned to guard them who would have faced death if they had broken free. While Paul and Silas were singing late that night, there was an earthquake that flung the doors of the prison wide open. But guess what? Paul and Silas stayed put. The jailer, who was ready to kill himself thinking they had escaped, was so moved by their Christian walk that he said, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" He wanted what they had! Paul and Silas shared the Gospel and because of that the jailer "and everyone in his household were immediately baptized." Do you just love that or what?

So knowing the way we live has the power to draw people to Jesus or to lead them away, may you and I make the decision each and every day to live as ambassadors for Christ. To be bold in sharing the Gospel by our actions and by our words wherever we are that the lost would come to know Him because of it.

Heavenly Father, thank You for people who aren't ashamed or afraid to share their faith. Help us to be those people Lord. Help us to understand that we are your representatives and called to live our lives worthy of being called ambassadors for Christ. Help us to live out our Christian walk in a way that shows we love You and belong to You. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!!!

Prayer changes things

"First of all, I ask you to pray for everyone. Ask God to help and bless them all, and tell God how thankful you are for each of them. Pray for kings and others in power, so we may live quiet and peaceful lives as we worship and honor God. This kind of prayer is good, and it pleases God our Savior. God wants everyone to be saved and to know the whole truth..." 1 Timothy 2:1-4 CEV

How Does God Hear All Our Prayers at Once? | Guideposts
Well before the alarm clock was set to go off yesterday, I woke up fully alert and energized. "Oh my," I thought as I closed my eyes and tried to go back to sleep, "It's too early for this." But as I laid there for a few more moments, my heart began to stir so greatly within me that I couldn't ignore what I knew I was being called to do. I was being called to pray. So that's what I immediately did as I got ready to hit the trail before church. For more than two hours, I walked, ran, and prayed for everyone the Lord laid on my heart - my children, my husband, my friends and other family members, my pastor and all pastors, my church and all churches, my community and all communities, and all those in local leadership and those in the White House. And I prayed that every person in our nation and in our world who didn't know the truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ would come to know Him and be saved. And I prayed hard!

And you know, although God is sovereign over all, He not only allows us to intercede on behalf of others - which has the power to change their hearts and the course of events - but wants us to do to so. And we do this praying "for everyone" and asking God "to help and bless them all." Did you get that all and everyone part? God wants all the world to know Him because "God wants everyone to be saved and to know the whole truth” because He loves everyone! And the whole truth is this... there is only one God and only one way to eternal life and that's through his Son, Jesus Christ, who willingly died to rescue all of us while we were still sinners and undeserving of the sacrifice.

But if you’re hesitant to pray because you think there's no power in prayer, think again my friend. Prayer has been known to change the world more times than you and I could ever count or will ever know. And there has never been and never will be a situation that God doesn't have the power to change. So pray and pray hard!

Heavenly Father, thank You for allowing us to come to the foot of the Cross to intercede on behalf of our nation and its’ people. May our prayer be that the lost would be found and that all hearts would be turned to You so healing might take place. Urge us to pray for all people on all occasions Lord that we might be used to bring about the change we want to see in our world. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!!!
