I will praise You

"Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the LORD will personally go ahead of you. He will be with you; he will neither fail you nor abandon you." Deuteronomy 31:8

Image result for runner in snow pic

So, let's see... yesterday morning I was pummeled by a wind chill that brought negative zero temperatures and blinding snow riveting into my face mask and stinging my eyes, almost slipped on an ice patch, had the wind at my back (that was nice) and nearly froze to death. All that in one hour of running. But it was great! Before you think that my brain is frozen, let me explain. It was a good run because I was able to do it and because God was there with me. You see, He never promised me or you an easy life-in fact, we are not even guaranteed a long life. But He did promise to be with us through it all.

In those lonely times when I couldn't see beyond my tears, He was there to comfort me. In those times when I was riddled with guilt and shame, He was there to forgive me. In those times when I felt like giving up, He was there to give me strength to face another day. In those times when I had lost my way, He was there to guide me back on course. And mostly, in those times when I felt alone, He was there... my Friend, my Father and my Comforter. How then can I not rejoice? Even in the wind and snow of a cold winter day, He is there.

Exodus 15:2 says, ""The LORD is my strength and my defense; he has become my salvation. He is my God, and I will praise him, my father's God, and I will exalt him." So no matter the situation, no matter the location and no matter my destination, I will praise Him. I will praise Him for who He is and what He has done for me. And I will thank Him for his goodness, kindness and mercy...undeserved gifts given freely to a sinner like me... and you. Have you thanked Him today?

Heavenly Father, thank you for always being there for us. Thank you for the gift of your Holy Spirit who indwells in all believers. There is nothing that can compare to basking in your presence every day, every hour and every minute. I will praise you my Lord til the end of my days for your mercy and grace. It's in your precious name we pray, Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!!!

Take that first step

"The LORD directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives."  Psalm 37:23

I've heard it said that, "The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step." Did you know that it takes approximately 2,000 steps to complete a mile depending on your height and stride length? That's about 6200 steps to complete a 5k and about 52,400 steps to complete a marathon. A thousand mile journey would require about 2,000,000 steps to complete. That's a lot of steps! But one thing is true of each distance... you cannot take that last step until you take the first. And, many times, the first step is the hardest.

To accomplish any goal, there are three things that we need to believe:

1. It is possible to achieve - "Jesus looked at them and said, "With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God." Mark 10:27

2. You have the power to overcome any obstacle in your way - "Look, I have given you authority over all the power of the enemy, and you can walk among snakes and scorpions and crush them. Nothing will injure you." Luke 10:19

3. We were created to do great things - "For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." Ephesians 2:10

So don't be afraid to take that first step. You can do extraordinary things if you simply believe you can achieve it, believe you are equipped for it and you have the power to conquer your fears, doubts and limitations. What are you waiting for?

Heavenly Father, thank you for providing us with everything we need to do amazing things. May we glorify you in all we do, whether that be running a race, finishing a project or accomplishing a goal. All praise to you for giving us the ability to overcome any obstacle in our way. Help us to take that first step today, and then the next.... and the next. It's in your precious name we pray, Jesus. Amen.

Don't get led "off course"

"Dear friends, you always followed my instructions when I was with you. And now that I am away, it is even more important. Work hard to show the results of your salvation, obeying God with deep reverence and fear." Philippians 2:12

It's much easier to stay on track when we have someone leading us in the right direction. Wouldn't you agree? Unfortunately, that's not always possible. Most times we are on our own to navigate the way and Paul warns us that "it is even more important" to be mindful to obey Christ when we are without a competent guide. What happened at the Mercedes-Benz Half Marathon last weekend is a reminder of how easily even the most experienced and disciplined people can "get lost" following the wrong leader. Peter Chebii was in the lead, positioned to win first place, with two runners (of the Brooks Hansons team) in close pursuit. They were following the pace car that was leading them along the course. Problem was, the pace car took a wrong turn.

As you can imagine, this cost Chebii a first place win. Although he managed to place second and the other runners claimed a third and fourth place victory, their actions cost them dearly. David Marley, who was in fourth place, stayed on the correct path and claimed the first place prize and the prize money. As you might imagine, the runners were quite upset and tweeted: @Run_Mercedes dropped the ball this morning in the HM. Lead vehicle took top 3 men off course in the last mile. Pretend it never happened? Valerie McLean, the vice chairman of the race said, "The course is very well marked," and added that the crowd was screaming at the runners but they kept on going. She then said that, "the race expects the athletes to do their homework prior to running the course."

The thing is, we can blame any number of things and people for our actions, for our straying off course or away from God. But, ultimately, we are responsible for our own salvation. It is our job to work hard and obey God and His Word-and to walk with Him so closely we cannot be turned"off course" by anyone or anything. By doing so, Philippians 2:16 tells us that we will, "be able to boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor in vain." How about you? Are you focused and "on course" today?

Heavenly Father, thank you for your word that gives us everything we need to stay focused and run the race set before us. May it be our greatest training tool and the words we crave daily to keep us from straying off course. We ask that you run the race beside us, guiding us and leading us along the paths of righteousness. May we stay completely focused on you that we would not be led down the wrong path. It's in your precious name we pray, Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!!!

Each day is a blessing

"I would have lost heart, unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living." Psalm 27:13

With only 15 minutes left to go before the expo ended (along with the last chance to register for any of the races), I didn't really expect to see anyone other than those on the way out. Unexpectedly, a very beautiful woman, still dressed in work clothes complete with her name tag, rushed over to our TEAM413 booth. We could tell she was in a hurry as she asked where the sign-ups were. In fact, she seemed so frantic to get there that I stayed behind as my partner, without hesitation, led her over to the registration table. About 5 minutes later she returned with a determined look on her face.

"Do you have any of these shirts in pink?" she asked. How funny that she wanted that color as I had just found the only one we had left buried under some of the others. And what do you know? It was in her size. God is so good, I thought to myself. As we talked further she told me why she was there. Her name was Gena and she and her friend had talked for a long time about training to do a 5k race but, like a lot of people, they kept putting it off. Her friend was diagnosed with breast cancer and was buried on Valentine's Day (just a week earlier) and life, as Gena viewed it, was forever changed. She was now determined to complete the race (running, walking or crying) in honor of her friend. Not only this 5k but one every month for a year. Fighting tears, we agreed that it was indeed time to start living... and then we agreed that God would indeed provide the strength she needed to finish.

You see we aren't guaranteed tomorrow. James 4:14 reminds us that we, "do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes." If you have today, it's a blessing. Every breath you and I take is an undeserved gift from God-one not to be wasted. Gena sent me a picture of herself after finishing the 5k she kept putting off and I have a feeling that she will view each day differently from now on. How about you?

Heavenly Father, thank you for the blessings that come out of the most tragic times in our lives. Thank you that we can see a purpose for life through our tears and sadness. I pray that we would live each day to the fullest. I pray that we would love hard, laugh harder and rejoice with the blessings of each moment we are given. Thank you Jesus for the lessons learned through sadness, tears and despair. Thank you for lifting us up to live another day. It's in your precious name we pray, Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!!!

We are all runners

"I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well." Psalm 139:14

Many times runners won't admit to being a "runner" because they don't feel they look like one. Well... what does a runner look like anyway? I consider myself a runner but I certainly don't fit the stereotype. I am not rail thin and my legs certainly aren't long. I don't let that stop me though, and I hope you won't either. I pray you will, instead, choose to see yourself as God sees you... wonderfully made! No matter what shape, size or weight you are, if you have the items listed below then... Congratulations! You look like a runner.

1. Legs - Legs that propel you down the road or path (whether assisted or not) are the first part of your runner’s body. It doesn’t matter if they’re long and lean or strong and muscular. It doesn’t matter if your thighs rub together or not. It especially does not matter if you require the use of prosthetics. You HAVE a runner’s body.

2. Lungs- Do your lungs pump oxygen throughout your body? Have you either perfected your breathing pattern while you run or are working towards it? This vital process is foremost necessary to live, but the productivity with which it occurs helps you become an efficient runner, therefore giving you a runner’s body.

3. Brain- Your brain functions to send and receive signals all over your body. It starts with telling one foot to lift and move, and then the other foot follows. Next, a more extraordinary thing happens, and a stronger signal is sent over and over again telling your runner’s body to keep pushing: don’t give up; you’re getting stronger; you can do this; you will succeed.

4. Heart- Gene Hackman’s line in The Replacements says it all: “You’ve got to have heart. Miles and miles of heart.” So, most importantly, does your heart tell you that you’re a runner? Your heart is what tells you that you have a runner’s body.
http://runhaven.com/2014/11/07/runners-body/

1 Samuel 16:7 tells us this, "The LORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart." So, whether you have a 7 minute pace or a 15 minute pace, are 200 pounds or 105 pounds... if you have legs, lungs, a brain and a heart, you are a runner. And if you have a heart for Jesus too, you are a Christian runner.

Heavenly Father, help us to see ourselves as you see us....fearfully and wonderfully made. Help us to celebrate our differences and embrace them as different ways to glorify You. Help us to run the good race knowing full well that we are Christian runners no matter how the world views us. May we lift up your name with every breath and every step we take and give you all the praise when we cross the finish line.

Happy Running!!!

Treadmill vs. the road

"Sing praises to God, sing praises; sing praises to our King, sing praises. For God is the King of all the earth; sing to him a psalm of praise." Psalm 47:6-7

Wow! Just when we thought Spring was close, wind chills and snow returned. Rather than abandoning their runs, runners are turning to the dreaded "mill", aka the treadmill or dreadmill. Which leaves a person wondering.... is this workout equivalent to running outside? Is it really worth the effort? According to the newest research, the answer is yes... and no.

Per a study by exercise physiologist Reed Ferber, who is the director of the running injury clinic at the University of Calgary in Canada reported that treadmill running has a few negligible variations in biomechanics compared to outdoor running. Here's the breakdown:

Biomechanics- “You have more forward lean from your trunk and more flexion at the hips and knees when you run on a treadmill because you don’t need to generate as much power at the same speed as you do running on level ground outdoors,” he said. “For the average runner, this doesn’t mean much.”

Calorie Burn- Studies show there are miniscule differences in calorie burn when running at the same speed and incline on a treadmill compared to outdoors. These differences only become meaningful at speeds faster than about 8.5 miles per hour -- which, let’s face it, is way faster than an average runner’s pace, Ferber noted.
*Ferber said that speedsters can incline their treadmill by 1 or 2 percent to make up the difference.
Injury- There are no studies comparing the injury rate or types of injuries you get on a treadmill versus running outdoors. However, Ferber still cautions runners who spend their winters on the treadmill to cut their mileage in half when they finally get back out on the road.
*“When you run outdoors, your calf muscles produce about 80 percent of the forward propulsion power but this drops significantly on a treadmill because the ground moves underneath you,” he said. “When you transition from the treadmill to the road, you could be at risk for calf strains, plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendonitis.”
Boredom- Treadmill workouts are the exercise equivalent to watching paint dry for many people, Ferber admitted. Some exercisers tend to cut their workouts short out of sheer boredom.
*But studies have shown distraction techniques like listening to music or watching a movie can help speed up time. Ferber also recommended playing around with any preprogrammed workouts that automatically change speed and incline to help keep the brain engaged.
Just remember that our bodies are gifts from God and it's important to take care of them... physically, spiritually and emotionally. It's easy to find excuses but, by staying fit and healthy, we are better equipped to carry out our God-given vocation on earth. So go ahead and jump on that treadmill. Sing praises that God has given you good health and start dreaming of Spring. It will be here soon enough and, by not abandoning the run, you will be ready!!

Heavenly Father, thank you for designing our bodies so wonderfully. Help us to remember that the body, mind and spirit work together and that we need to work daily to keep them healthy. May we strive to daily strengthen our body as a whole giving you the glory for the ability to do so. It's in your precious name we pray, Jesus. Amen.

The shoebox

"Don't let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world, rather than from Christ." Colossians 2:8

Image result for shoebox pic
Last week my daughter was looking for a box to decorate that would hold her valentines for school. "Mom, do you have a shoebox I can use?" she asked. After handing her one, she said, "This is the same one I had last year, how'd that happen?". As I laughed, I explained to her that it wasn't the same box but it was the same type of box. When she asked why I always wore the same type of shoe, I explained that it was because it worked for me, it had proven itself to be a reliable brand and was true to it's advertisement. I described how, many times, I had believed the promises of other manufacturers only to be highly disappointed and vowing to be more careful.

And then I explained to her how the same was true of this world. You have to be very careful not to believe everything you see, hear or read I told her. Many people advertise that they know Christ but promote their ideologies above His. They will sell "their ideas" of Christianity to you in the form of self improvement seminars, self help books and many other items. They might even lead you astray with their words and ideas. But the only thing that is tried, true and reliable is Jesus and the Holy Bible- not something like Jesus, not something like His Word but Christ and Christ alone. Before buying into anything that man says or promises, you need only look to what God says. Psalm 118:8 gives us this advice, "It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man."

Being consistent in shoes can be a great thing. But being consistent in what you follow, who you allow to give you advice and where you gain your knowledge is even better. Don't be fooled by false advertising, go straight to the Source.

Heavenly Father, thank you for the lessons we can learn from a shoebox. Thank you for your Word to open our eyes to false teachings and philosophies. May we turn to you to guide us and may we choose those teachers that follow you and your word. Help us to be wise in who we place our trust. You and you alone are the true source of wisdom and life. It's in your precious name we pray, Jesus. Amen.

Trust in Jesus - Third Day

Never give up

"In my distress I called to the LORD; I cried to my God for help. From his temple he heard my voice; my cry came before him, into his ears." Psalm 18:6

At the 2015 Austin Marathon on February 15, Hyvon Ngetich (a 29 year old Kenyan runner) was leading the females and was just 50 meters away from a second place win when she collapsed to the ground unable to take one more step. With the finish line in sight, she was so determined to finish the race that she crawled on her hands and knees until she crossed it. This incredible act of endurance and persistence caught the eye of race director John Conley, who promised to give her the same amount of money given to the second place finisher as a prize for her dedication.

Where did she get the strength to do this?! It was apparent to everyone watching that she had absolutely nothing left to give. The one small sentence she spoke after finally crossing the finish line spoke volumes. Still on her hands and knees she said, "Oh, God, thank you, I crossed." It was by God's power... simple as that. Have you ever felt this way? So weak you couldn't possibly take another step? In Psalm 34:17, God gives us this promise, "The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles." When we cry out to Him, you can be sure that He hears... and is there to rescue us.

Whether your struggle is a physical, emotional or spiritual one today, don't run the race alone. The psalmist said that in his distress he called to the Lord for help and He heard his voice. He hears yours and mine too if we will simply cry out.

Heavenly Father, thank you for being only a desperate cry away. Thank you for hearing our anguished pleas and always coming to our rescue. Oh Lord, how we love you, praise you and adore you for your faithfulness to us. Help us to remember that we are not alone in our struggles... you have the strength we need to get through any situation. It's in your precious name we pray, Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!!!

Give me a thirst

"As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?" Psalm 42:1-2

Do you know what it's like to be thirsty? I mean really thirsty? Last Saturday, with temperatures forecast to be in the 30's, I ran a 25k dressed in tights and a long sleeved shirt. As the mercury climbed and got into the 50's, I realized I was way overdressed, really hot and intensely thirsty... thirstier in fact than I could recall being in a very long time. The road between the water stations, placed 2.5 miles apart, began to feel like a no-man's-land. Water become my main focus, my only thought and my greatest obsession. Just keep running, I thought to myself, you will get what you long for soon. Run faster, get to that oasis... run Forrest run!

Each time I drank in the cold water, I silently thanked God for quenching my thirst and providing me with the necessary hydration that I needed to go another 2.5 miles. Oh Lord, I thought, help me to run after You and Your Word like this today, tomorrow and every day for the rest of my life. Give me a thirst so great for You that I can focus on nothing else. Psalm 119:20 says, "My soul is consumed with longing for your laws at all times." and Psalm 119:131 says, "I open my mouth and pant, longing for your commands." This is the kind of thirst I desire. This is the yearning I need to keep me running.

Isaiah 55:1 says, ""Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters;". God has prepared a place of refreshing for you and me. Won't you come and drink?

Heavenly Father, thank you for giving us a thirst for you. May it be as unquenchable as our physical thirst in the driest desert. I pray that we would yearn for You so greatly that we can think of nothing else besides You. May we be consumed at all times with a longing for your laws. It's in your precious name we pray, Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!!!

Run with the Wind 2015

"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." Philippians 4:13

Post race picture- (L-R) Luke Morrison, Pastor John Shaw, Melissa Martinez

What a fabulous day for a race. Valentines Day is a day to express your love... for running I would say. The 25k race runs from Sarcoxie to Carthage or vice versa depending on which way the wind is blowing. The goal is to pick the route that will have the wind at your back. Today's race started in Carthage and ended in Sarcoxie. With mild temps and great friends to share the day, we were off and running at 9 a.m. to complete the 15.6 mile race.

The course led us through the country with some rolling hills and beautiful views of God's creation. I love that it was a family friendly route where loved ones and friends could follow their runners via car cheering them on and passing them any supplies they might need. For Luke Morrison, it was to be a day full of anticipation. This was to be his first race and. although I had given him some race pointers, he would have much to discover about distance running and himself as he ventured to complete his first road race. One thing he seemed to know was speed! He finished in 2:01 to place 2nd in his age group with a smile on his face and a spirit already planning his next one. Loved seeing the grin on his mother's face too!

Pastor John and I finished with respectable times and agreed that it was a blessed day indeed. God willing, we will run this race again next year. Exceptional job Joplin Road Runners. Thanks for a great race!

Clowning around waiting for the race to start - Love this group of friends!

Amazing Grace

"In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace " Ephesians 1:7

Friday the 13th is considered to be the unluckiest day of the year. While luck denotes that things happen by pure chance, grace says something different. Grace is the free and unmerited favor of God. Simply put, grace is a blessing we don't deserve. One Friday three years ago, I got to see this grace up front. On the way back from Good Friday services at church, my children and I were nearly sideswiped by a drunk driver who pulled out of a driveway in front of us (on a highway as we were going 55 mph), barely missing our minivan, and then flipped over just feet later, totaling the car and surely killing any occupants. By God's grace, we were able to quickly pull onto a gravel road to avoid being hit ourselves on the busy two lane highway. With trembling fingers, I quickly dialed 911 as I stood in the road waving my free arm to warn traffic. When emergency personnel finally arrived, we headed home... very shaken, but counting our blessings and praying for the driver of that car.

With a few phone calls the next day, we were able to find out some information about that driver. His name was Fred, he had been released from jail on bond and he lived close by. After church the next day, that blessed Easter Sunday (a day of amazing grace), accompanied by my mother and children, I went to go talk to Fred (who had been told we were coming). With his head hung low, he listened as I spoke these words, "Please look at my children, who you could have killed, so that you might find it in your heart to never drive drunk again. By God's grace we have all been saved... not just from this accident but from our sins. I forgive you and God forgives you Fred." As he cried, he told us the story of how he had just lost his job and was taking care of his bedridden father. He was a recovering alcoholic who made a terrible mistake... a mistake that I reminded him that he had already been forgiven of.

As we all stood crying on Fred's front porch, we were overwhelmed with emotion and gratefulness.  Christ had indeed saved us all that Friday night from physical death - but He had saved us from eternal death on that blessed Good Friday thousand of years ago. Not by luck, but by his Grace. Amazing Grace indeed... can I get an Amen?

Heavenly Father, thank you for the redemption you have given us through your blood and the forgiveness of sins in accordance with your grace. Oh Lord, I pray that we would be givers of that same grace to others and that they may come to know you and be forgiven. May we forgive those who have wronged us and dare to love them in the same way you have loved us. It's in your precious name we pray, Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!!!

Who's your coach?

"We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead,do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully." Romans 12:6-8

Image result for god as coach pic

At the end of a winning game or season,  you will most likely see the winning team hugging the coach, lifting him up or patting him on the back - acknowledging that his skills, leadership and coaching were the cause of their success. You see... you can have the greatest God given talents, strengths and abilities, but without focus, you will never reach your full potential. A wise coach takes the gifts and capabilities of each individual and determines where and how they will be best used to serve the team as a whole. In this way, everybody wins.

There's one catch though...every individual player has to surrender his or her will to be part of that team. To be used, we have to let go of our pride and trust the coach to place us where we will serve a greater purpose. Wouldn't it be great to know that there is a coach who knows exactly where you and I should be? That knows exactly what we should be doing? God is that Supreme Coach, the wisest mentor, teacher and trainer that we will ever know. Psalm 32:8 says, "I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you." As members of God's team, our goal is to share Christ with those we meet.

Our different gifts give us the means to serve as individuals and his coaching gives us the wisdom to know the best way to serve as a team. He has promised to instruct and teach us in the way we should go and better than that... to watch us as we do so, keeping his loving eye on us. How great it will be to hug our Coach when we gain victory!

Heavenly Father, thank you for being the greatest instructor we could ever ask for. Not only did you give us everything we need to serve you and be a part of your team but you are there to show us how best to use those things. May we look to you always to instruct and teach us in the way we should go knowing that your loving eye is always upon us. May we work together as a team of believers to bring others to you and gain victory through Christ. It's in your precious name we pray, Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!!!

Beautiful YOU

"We do not dare to classify or compare ourselves with some who commend themselves. When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are not wise." 2 Corinthians 10:12

If you are on social media much, you will probably read at least one status update daily that reads something like this: John Smith ran 6.2 miles in 57 minutes and feels pretty good or Sally Johnson biked 22 miles in 65 minutes and feels blah. While these posts might serve to encourage and motivate some, they can serve to dishearten and discourage others. The problem is comparing. When we compare ourselves to others, whether in our abilities or appearance, we are bound to either think too highly of ourselves or too lowly. We simply weren't meant to compare or judge ourselves by what anyone else says or does - we weren't created to be alike or to have the same gifts or skills.

Psalm 139:14 says, "I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well." Notice the psalmist says I and not we. He knew that God made us all unique and that his works are wonderful. We were not made on an assembly line but individually handcrafted by the Creator himself. In fact, God made us so distinct that out of the billions of people on the earth, we all have totally different fingerprints and DNA. He made us individual down to the palms of our hands. There is no other person on the planet that shares the same design as the one on your thumb! And when he said, "my soul knows it very well" he was praising his Maker because he realized he was special.

Maybe the reason we compare is that we forget or simply don't know "well enough" the special way we were created. Avoid the temptation to compare yourself with others and instead celebrate the YOU He formed.... the YOU that is fearfully and wonderfully made.

Heavenly Father, thank you for making us all different and yet perfect in your eyes. Your word tells us that we were created in your image. You don't' make anything less than the best! Oh, help us to praise you for the way we were made, help us to embrace it and know that your works are truly wonderful indeed. It's in your precious name we pray, Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!!!

Finish the race

"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing." 2 Timothy 4:7-8

In the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, Derek Redmond, was favored to medal in the 400 meter Sprint. He had been forced to withdraw only 10 minutes before the race at the 1998 Olympics with an Achilles Tendon injury and was more determined than ever to "finish the race". Only 175 meters away from finishing, he felt a searing pain and fell down in agony. He had torn his hamstring. As the medical crew arrived, he waved them off and said, "No, there's no way I'm getting on that stretcher. I'm going to finish my race." Seconds later, his father came to his side and helped him hobble closer to the finish line where he released his hold and let his son cross it alone to "finish the race". His father was waiting there to hold him as he finished and said, "I'm the proudest father alive, I'm prouder of him than I would have been if he had won the gold medal. It took a lot of guts for him to do what he did."

It's easy to run the race well when things are going good... when the conditions are just right, when your health is strong and youth is on your side. But, what we do in the trials is what determines whether we will receive the crown. Those that quit or pack it in when it becomes too hard or uncomfortable forfeit the prize, "the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day -and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing." James 1:12 gives us this promise, "Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him."

When you feel you can't go on, remember that the finish line is close. Stay in the race, fight the good fight with all you have, keep the faith and keep pressing on. Persevere under trial and rise to the test. Like Derek Redmond, have the courage to say, that no matter what stands in your way, "I'm going to finish my race."

Heavenly Father, thank you for being with us through the trials and tribulations of our lives. Thank you for your comfort, guidance and faithfulness in the good times and the bad. When we are tempted to bow out of the race, remind us that you are there to help and, in your strength, we can finish strong and lay hold of the crown of life that you have promised to all those who love you. It's in your precious name we pray, Jesus. Amen.

Follow the Pacer

"Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit." Galatians 5:24-25

Running pacers are those people you see in a race who are there to help you reach your goal. They are usually very easy to pick out by the signs they are carrying announcing the time in which they aim to have you to the finish line. For instance, a 4:30 (four and a half hour) marathon pacer would have you running (about) a 10:30 minute per mile pace for 26.2 miles. A 2:00 (two hour) half marathon pacer will have you running (roughly) a 9:15 per mile pace for 13.1 miles. Whatever your goal or distance, the appropriate race pacer is there to help you achieve it. For the new runner, there is probably no better way to ensure a good finish.

The pacer will keep the pace consistent at all times so it's very important that a runner stays focused and "in step" with him. Get too far ahead and you risk not having enough energy to finish. Get too far behind and you risk not being able to catch up. It's also very important to listen to the pacer's instructions, encouragement and advice each step of the way. In our race to the ultimate finish line, the Holy Spirit is our pacer. He is there to guide us every step of the way to a sure finish. But how do we know if we are "in step" you might wonder? That's easy... we will be producing fruit, "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control." (Galatians 5:22). Achieving this requires constant, consistent and daily examination of our stride.

Are you seeing these fruits of the spirit in your life? If not, maybe you've fallen behind the Pacer? Or maybe you've been in such a rush that you left Him behind? Whatever the case, it's never too late to get back on pace. As Acts 3:19 tells us, simply "repent of your sins and turn to God". Now then... readjust your pace and get back on the race course.

Heavenly Father, thank you for the Holy Spirit in our lives to show us the way we should live, the course we should follow and the pace we should keep to achieve the greatest goal.... heaven. Help us to stay focused on your plan and your route for our lives and to keep "in step with the spirit" with every stride we take. It's in your precious name we pray, Jesus. Amen.

Burn off the crazy

"I have set the LORD always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices; my flesh also dwells secure. You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy;" Psalm 16:8-9, 11

I RUN TO BURN OFF THE CRAZY. This is one of the newest slogans I've seen emblazoned on athletic gear. For me,there are days when it's much more than a catchphrase on a shirt. Face it, life can make a person nuts! Going for a run not only takes a person away from those things that are making them anxious, it actually works better than many medicines to improve a person's mood and clarity. Here's how running makes you happier:

Neurotransmitters are chemicals produced by nerve cells used to send signals to other cells to trigger certain functions. In addition to BDNF, aerobic and anaerobic exercise increases the levels of neurotransmitters such as epinephrine, serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine, all of which influence your energy levels as well as make you feel great after a challenging workout.

However, stress and depression can influence how your brain functions and can actually change your brain chemistry. That means that skipping your workouts when you feel depressed may prolong the amount of time you’re in a lousy mood. The more you exercise, the more efficient your body becomes at producing and using these neurotransmitters, which may explain why some people might feel like they’re addicted to exercise.

Don’t just think of exercise as a way to lose weight and look great—it can help you feel great, too. Physical activity that elevates your heart rate and gets your blood pumping can be a very effective way to change the way you feel and leave you in a better mood. Exercise can help change your mood and leave you feeling sharp, confident and ready-to-go.

Want to use that time running to make yourself even happier? Spend it with the Lord. Whether listening to praise music or quietly praying and speaking to Him, this is the best way to boost your mood. As the psalmist tells us... there is fullness of joy in his presence and there is peace as he walks beside you. His spirit will gladden our hearts and make us rejoice. I'd say going for a run or walk with God is exactly what you and I need to "burn off the crazy". Ready...set....go.

Heavenly Father, thank you for your presence that gives us such peace and joy. There is no one like you Lord. No one that could love us enough to grant such blessings to such undeserving people. May we turn to you to fill our every need and to calm our hearts and the crazy thoughts that invade our mind. Fill us with your presence as we seek your face and calm our anxious hearts. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus, Amen.

Happy Running!!!

Keep trying!

"Though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong, for the Lord upholds his hand." Psalm 37:24

The question will be asked for generations: why did Russell Wilson throw the ball?

"Thank You God for the opportunity. We'll be back... I will never waiver on who He has called me to be..." Russell Wilson, the Seattle Seahawks quarterback, tweeted after the 2015 Superbowl following their defeat. The next day's headlines read, "Russell Wilson throws game-ending interception in Super Bowl" describing the play that granted victory to the New England Patriots. How easy it would have been for him to become angry or slip into self pity and doubt... but he didn't.  He instead chose to say this via twitter,"At 26 years old I won't allow 1 play or 1 moment to define my career. I will keep evolving." http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-shutdown-corner/russell-wilson-throws-game-ending-interception-in-super-bowl-052624153.html

Let's face it, we've all failed. History is full of people who have failed. Consider this:

- Thomas Edison was told he was "too stupid to learn anything" and made 1,000 unsuccessful attempts at making the light bulb. If he hadn't tried for 1001, we might all still be sitting in the dark.
- Henry Ford, known for inventing the assembly line and innovating automobile production, failed at business and went broke five times before founding the Ford Motor Company
- Walt Disney was fired by a newspaper editor because "he lacked imagination and had no good ideas."
- Winston Churchill failed the sixth grade and was defeated in every election for public office until he was finally elected Prime Minister at the age of 62.

Failing does not define us unless we allow it to.  Many times the real victory is found in the loss. It's in our shortcomings and pursuit to win that we learn who God is, and what He wants for us - its through the trials and losses along the way that He shapes us. Instant success can't do that. In those moments when we are knocked down to our knees and can only succeed through His strength, we learn that, by trusting Him we can accomplish anything. These are the greatest lessons... learned only from failure.

Thomas Jefferson, who refused to let failure define him, once said, "Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time." Keep trying!

Heavenly father, help us to be strong and faithful when we don't succeed. Help us to embrace our failures as stepping stones to where you want to place us. May we never tire of doing good and serving you. Help us to keep trying! It's in your precious name we pray Jesus, Amen.

Your work will be rewarded

"But as for you, be strong and do not give up, for your work will be rewarded." 2 Chronicles 15:7

What if I told you that there was a man who walks 21 miles a day, 5 days a week to get to work? That comes to 105 weekly miles... way more than most of the marathoners I know. What if I also told you that he does it all without grumbling or complaining? Pretty hard to believe isn't it? James Robertson, a 56 year old man from Detroit does just that. He can't afford a car on his salary but he doesn't let that stop him. He relies on public transportation for part of his 46 mile commute but relies mostly on his own two feet. He leaves his home at 8 a.m. and doesn't arrive back until 4 a.m., gets a few hours sleep and starts again. His boss had this to say about him, "His work ethic and spirit are truly inspiring. Robertson doesn't complain and he manages to have perfect attendance at work. I set our attendance standard by this man. I say, if this man can get here, walking all those miles through snow and rain, well I'll tell you, I have people in Pontiac 10 minutes away and they say they can't get here — bull!"
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/02/03/james-robertson-walks-21-miles-to-work-donations-car_n_6604896.html

The story gets even better. Evan Leedy, a student at Detroit's Wayne State University, set up a site to raise $5000 to buy James a car, the media told the story and more than $200,000 was donated to Mr. Robertson, who plans to keep it simple. While this is certainly a Cinderella story of how hard work reaps its rewards, I believe it's a bigger one about how one's attitude can change the people around you. Ephesians 4:29 tells us, "Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear." Corrupting talk includes any sort of grumbling, complaining or degrading sarcasm - it should be replaced with only words that encourage, comfort or instruct... words that are good for building up. This is the way, in the midst of the world, we set ourselves apart and inspire others to do the same. I say it was his attitude more than his actions that drew people to him.

Very few of us will ever be rewarded this side of heaven for the work we do....especially in the way that James Robertson was. But we shouldn't let that stop us or be our motivation.  Matthew 5:12 gives us this promise, " Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven.." So, be strong and don't give up. Let your attitude change those around you so they might also know Christ and be rewarded.

Heavenly Father, thank you for giving us the ability to work. No matter what you have called us to do, may we do it with joy in our hearts and praise on our lips. Wherever we are, let us view it as an opportunity to encourage others through our actions and speech. May our words be kind, encouraging and uplifting to everyone we meet and work with. It's in your precious name we pray, Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!!!

Seasons change

"Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever; wisdom and power are his. He changes times and seasons; he deposes kings and raises up others. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning." Daniel 2:20-21

Rider twins at the Miami Half Marathon

Sometimes our lives can change in an instant. No one knows that better than twin sisters Nichole and Jennifer Rider. They had been running together since middle school to prepare for track meets where they competed side by side. But one day in November 1995, when the pair was in college, Nichole was the victim of a car accident that left her paralyzed from the neck down. In an instant, both their lives were changed. Perhaps there is no greater reminder that God is in charge than when we cannot change our circumstances. It's then that we have a choice... we can give up or we can press on. We can either embrace this new period in our life or mourn the passing of the old one. Whatever our decision, another day will pass and soon another season.

At last week's Miami Half Marathon - 20 years after Nichole's accident - the sisters ran together again. Jennifer and her friend Janeen Jones tag-teamed pushing Nichole in a jogging chair across the finish line to mark their first half marathon. They were running as part of Thumbs Up International, a group founded to pair up able-bodied athletes with those unable to achieve their running, biking or swimming goals on their own. However, as much as Nichole embraced the thrill of being in a race with thousands of people to cheer them on, deep down she wanted to be running herself. "After the fact, it was hard emotionally," Nichole said. "One thing I miss is running, and I wanted to be out there running instead of being pushed. When you're an athlete, you want to compete."  And compete she will - by God's grace, Nichole regained enough feeling in her hands and legs to return to an active lifestyle and racing...just a bit differently. She is planning to compete in the handcycle division at the next year's race and is considering a 10k in May.  http://www.runnersworld.com/runners-stories/twin-pushes-disabled-sister-at-miami-half-marathon

Talk about taking life's lemons and turning them into lemonade. Ecclesiastes 3:1 reminds us, "For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven:" Perhaps you're facing a new season in your life? You too have a choice. What will it be?

Heavenly Father, thank you for reminders that you are ultimately in control of everything... our lives, the seasons, and everything that happens. May we look to you to guide us through it all and, when unexpected things happen to change our lives may we continue to look to you. I pray we trust you completely in whatever we are going through today. If we can't change our circumstances, please help us to change our attitude. It's in your precious name we pray, Jesus. Amen.

Party on

"About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everyone’s chains came loose. The jailer woke up, and when he saw the prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself because he thought the prisoners had escaped. But Paul shouted, “Don’t harm yourself! We are all here!” Acts 16:25-28

No doubt many of you watched the Super Bowl yesterday. And, if you were fortunate, you were surrounded by family and/or friends - some of which you may not like. Face it... we all have that one person that we just don't enjoy being around. Maybe it's your brother-in-law who knows everything and makes sure you know it too. Or maybe it's a friend that can never find the good in any situation and considers a frown a part of her outfit. Whatever the case, God has put them into your life, and you can be sure he has a purpose for it.

The book of Acts tells the story of Paul and Silas being thrown into a Roman prison for healing a slave girl. You can imagine the people and conditions there were not the most pleasant (prisons of that time were filthy and the guards could be brutal). Rather than complaining about the company they were placed with though, they prayed and sang songs to the Lord (as the other prisoners listened). When the doors flew open, most people would have run out of there faster than Usain Bolt (believed to be the fastest runner ever). The jailer, knowing he would face certain death for allowing his prisoners to escape, was ready to commit suicide. But imagine the jailer's surprise when he realized that Paul and Silas had not left! I love what happened next, "The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas. He then brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household." (v. 29-31)

When placed in a position or with people that are not what or who you would choose, instead of looking for a way out, try looking for a way in.... into their heart. Ask God what it is he would have you do. If you're willing, he will open the doors... even at a Super Bowl party.

Heavenly Father, thank you for loving us so much that you sent someone to share the gospel with us. I pray that we would continually be looking for opportunities and situations to do the same. In every circumstance, may we love and be kind to others, especially those that are hard to like. In doing so, I pray that they would see our peace and joy and want it for themselves. It's in your precious name we pray, Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!!!
