Heed the warnings

"For the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them; but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm.'" Proverbs 1:31,32 NIV

Image result for cold night pic

Running in the darkness of the early morning can be quite challenging at times, especially when it's cold. But since I absolutely love running outdoors I have, by God’s grace, been able to brave the cold every day this winter to venture out before dawn to get in a run before work. Not so for two days this week though. At the advice of the weather reporters who said it was dangerous to be outside for long in the -15 to -20 morning wind chill temperatures my region was experiencing, I brought my workout indoors. And you know, as much as I wanted to ignore the warnings and head outside, I was glad I didn't. I know my defiance would likely have resulted in injury and I would have had no one to blame but myself.

And when it comes to being defiant, stubborn, or wayward, the Bible is very clear that those people who are bullheaded and insistent upon having their own way, contrary to others' advice or orders, and especially in disobedience to the Word and the prompting of the Holy Spirit, will suffer the consequences of their actions and will have no one to blame but themselves. Thankfully though, the Bible is also very clear that whoever listens to the Lord "will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm."

So may you and I vow to heed God's warnings each and every day, that we might avoid sin, danger and the "waywardness of the simple" that only leads to death - turning our eyes and ears to the One who will guide us in the way we should go.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the reminder that disobedience always has consequences. Help us Lord to listen to the warnings you give us in the Word and through other people and to follow You at all times that we might avoid the fallout from our sin and rebelliousness. Most of all Lord, thank You for forgiving us when we go astray and for never leaving our side. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Reach out

"Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others." Philippians 2:4 ESV

As I was preparing to drive the 20 miles from my home to the neighboring town where I was planning to set up for the free 5k early morning run our fitness group (with the help of sponsors) puts on once a month, I received a text from my friend Jackie, "Still having the run?" "That's strange," I thought to myself. "Why wouldn't we be having it?" But as I got closer, it became very apparent why she had questioned whether the race might be canceled. There was a slick dusting of snow everywhere. You see, while my family and I had gotten a few flurries where we live, I was oblivious that the conditions might be different outside of my little "comfort zone."

And you know, as Christians, we sometimes have things so good (and face it, doesn't that describe most of us?) that we forget there are others around us that don't. We forget that there are children who go to bed hungry every night, parents that struggle to keep the utilities turned on, friends that are battling cancer, and people in the midst of deep depression or addiction. Which is exactly why Paul reminded us to look not only at our own interests but "also to the interests of others." And to "look" is not just to merely glance at someone my friend. It is to truly observe, study, regard and contemplate what someone else might be going through and need.

With that in mind, may you and I take the time to truly see what's happening around us and to "look" for ways to be a blessing to those people in need today. And doing that can be as simple as praying for someone or reaching out and saying, "I know what you're going through and I care."

Heavenly Father, thank You for the reminder that there are many people around us that are hurting, lost and in need of hope. Help us to be ever-conscious of that, that we might not miss even one opportunity to be the hands and feet of Jesus to them. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Divinely orchestrated events

"The LORD directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives." Psalm 37:23 NLT

Image result for woman at altar pic
Through a series of what I can only describe as divinely orchestrated events that began nearly three years ago, I found myself sitting alongside my teenage daughter and Ashley, a young lady whom I love like a daughter, in a church far from home Sunday morning. And while you might say it was merely a coincidence that I was in town for a night race that led to our being there on this particular day, I'd say you were wrong. You see, the pastor delivered a message that my dear Ashley desperately needed - a message that God, Himself, arranged for her to hear that led her to the altar to lay down a heavy burden she had been carrying way too long.

And you know, since the Bible is clear that God "delights in every detail" of our lives, it's no wonder that He goes to such great lengths to arrange "divine appointments,” or meetings that are specifically and unmistakably ordered, such as this one. In fact, there's nothing that God won't do to put us in the right place at the right time to hear the right words He knows we need. He is just that good. And He loves us that much.

So the next time you feel a nudge to go a certain way or to do a certain thing, listen to it my friend no matter how odd it may seem.  Allow the Lord to direct your steps and you will find that "divine appointments" are a regular occurrence.

Heavenly Father, thank You for loving us like You do. I know that there's literally nothing that You would not do to dispel the lies of the enemy so that we might lead lives free from the burdens we were never intended to carry. Thank You for loving us that much. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Share the Good News

"That is what the Scriptures mean when they say, "No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him.'" 1 Corinthians 2:9 NLT

Image result for preaching on street pic
Knowing that a cold front was on the way and planning to settle in for a few days, I was ever so grateful for the mild temperatures yesterday morning. At 41 degrees and without having to wear double layers to get in some miles, I was absolutely lost in the run. That is until I heard these words. "Well folks," my favorite morning DJ said as he wrapped up the local weather report. "Enjoy the morning because this is as good it's going to get." And he was right. Within the hour, the winds picked up, the temperature started to drop and it began to rain.

And you know, in a world tainted by sin, isn't it great to know that this life is not as good as it's going to get? That there's something better waiting for us? A place "God has prepared for those who love him" that is greater than anything our minds could ever imagine? Of course it is! But if it's that great, why are so many of us keeping the Good News to ourselves? Why are we not giving hope to a lost world by telling them about this place that God has created for all those who have put their trust in Jesus Christ?

My friend, there are people struggling to make it through each day. People that have lost all hope and are ready to give up. People that are waiting to hear about the hope you and I have. So let us not be silent! Won't you join me in telling everyone the Good News? After all, our job as followers of Jesus Christ is to save souls.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the reminder that we have the Good News the world needs to hear.  Help us to be bold Lord knowing that our words have the power to give hope to others and to determine where a lost person spends eternity. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

We have to be ready

"Preach the word of God. Be prepared, whether the time is favorable or not. Patiently correct, rebuke, and encourage your people with good teaching." 2 Timothy 4:2 NLT

Image result for preacher in the street pci
While training for a marathon is most certainly difficult, training for a 100-mile ultra marathon is even more so. You see, with an average finish time of 28 hours, a runner must train for every unfavorable condition they might encounter over the long race so they can be ready to withstand those conditions and press on in spite of them. Hence, in training for my next ultra, the reason I joined several other crazy runners for a frigid six-hour run that began Saturday night and ended early Sunday morning - and the reason you will see many of us running in the extreme cold, rain, sleet, snow and early morning hours. We simply have to be ready.

And when it comes to being ready to share the Gospel, the Bible tells us that, "whether the time is favorable or not.." you and I need to "be prepared." That means we have to be ready to serve the Lord at all times and in all conditions. In good times, in bad times, in hopeless situations, in hostile places and with hostile people. And in order to do this, you and I must be trained to withstand the less than "favorable" times we might encounter or responses we may receive. We not only do this by training in the Word every day but by the trials we face in our lives - the trials that threaten to break us but only serve to make us stronger and more determined to "preach the word of God."

So if you're following the Lord today and experiencing difficulties, hardships, problems or misfortunes, hold tight my friend. It could very well be that God is training you to withstand the unfavorable things you will face when He calls you out to do His will. And for that, you will have to be ready.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the realization that many of the tests and trials we face in life are the very things You use to prepare us for battle and to weather unfavorable situations. Help us to keep our eyes on You during these times that our faith might grow stronger and we might become more prepared to step out and share the Message. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Question that message

"'But you may wonder, ‘How will we know whether or not a prophecy is from the LORD?’ If the prophet speaks in the LORD’s name but his prediction does not happen or come true, you will know that the LORD did not give that message. That prophet has spoken without my authority and need not be feared." Deuteronomy 18:21,22 NLT

Image result for person preaching pic

Three days in a row this week I checked the weather forecast right before going to bed as I normally do, and then laid out clothes for my early morning run based on those predictions. And for three days in a row, the weatherman’s words have proven to be false. In fact, two of the reported forecasts weren't even remotely close to what was stated as likely to happen. I guess that goes to show that you and I shouldn't believe anything someone says until we see it.

And you know, the same is true of people who claim to have "predictions" or messages from God - you and I shouldn't believe what they say until we see it. You see, throughout history people have claimed to speak "in the Lord's name" and have led others astray by their false revelations. Which is why you and I are given the warning to wait and watch to see if a persons "prediction does not happen or come true," before declaring it to be truth. Better yet though, you and I should always check their words against the Word. If it doesn't align with the Bible, we can know instantly and without a doubt that the "prediction" is completely false.

So be on guard my friend. Many people will come "in the Lord's name" telling us things they declare to be truth. And if we aren't careful to question "that message" and search the Word for the real Truth, you and I might be led astray as well.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the reminder that there are many false prophets and deceivers in this world that claim to speak Your words but are really speaking their own. Help us to understand just how dangerous it is for a christian to believe these lies that we might be ever vigilant to check all messages against the Word. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

He provides the strength

"The LORD gives his people strength. The LORD blesses them with peace." Psalm 29:11 NLT

Image result for running in wind and rain pic
Just as predicted, the wind gusts picked up quickly and the temperature dropped even more quickly nearing the middle of my run Saturday morning. Knowing that I needed to complete it as part of training for an upcoming ultra though, I put on my game face and pressed on. And when the wind was at my back, I thanked the Lord for the extra "push" it gave me, even as I struggled to stay upright. And when I made the turnaround and the wind was at my front, the blowing wind and sleet pelting my eyes and making me fight to propel forward, I thanked the Lord again that, although He hadn't chosen to taken away the storm, He was providing the strength to get through it.

And you know, you and I were never guaranteed a life free from sorrows, tests, or trials. In a world tainted by sin, there's just no escaping the storms of life. But while God, for reasons we won't know this side of heaven, might not heal our afflictions or deliver us from our painful circumstances, He will always give us the strength to endure them. David clearly understood this when he wrote the words that have brought comfort to generations of believers, "The Lord gives his people strength. The Lord blesses them with peace."

And I hope that promise brings you comfort too my friend. Because no matter what you might be going through today or how it may appear, God loves you and He loves me. And He has promised to give "his people," those that have accepted Him as Lord and Savior, the strength to endure hardships and the peace to know it's going to be okay. Now doesn't that bring a smile to your face?

Heavenly Father, thank You for the reminder that if we have placed our faith and trust in You, we are never alone when we face the storms of life. Father, if there is anyone reading this today that is hurting and feeling alone, I pray that today is the day they choose to accept you as Lord of their life that they might have the strength and peace that only You can provide. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Deceivers among us

"But I am not surprised! Even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. So it is no wonder that his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. In the end they will get the punishment their wicked deeds deserve." 2 Corinthians 11:15

image
What picture comes to mind when you think of a mob hitman? Perhaps a man dressed all in black with a long coat and a sinister look upon his face? How about a fit British runner named Mark "Iceman" Fellows who ran a 47:17 at the 2015 Great Manchester 10k just two months before killing organized crime leader Paul "Mr. Big" Massey? It's true. This man, who was convicted recently of killing both Massey and his associate John Kinsella, fit quite well into the running community. By the looks of him, most people would never have suspected the evil that was hiding within. And frightenedly enough, if it hadn't been for his GPS watch that tipped off the police, Fellows might still be running among us.

But you know, this shouldn't surprise us. The Bible is clear that "Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. So it is no wonder that his servants also disguise themselves..." These "servants of righteousness," whose primary job is to deceive believers and lead people astray by their false teachings, will appear to be moral, good, and upstanding citizens by their public actions. But inside they will be evil and intent on harming others for their own good.

So may you and I not be fooled by outward appearances - not everyone who claims to be a Christian is a true believer. We must be on guard for anything these smooth-talking deceivers might do or say that might bring us harm or lead us or others astray.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the reminder that there are people in our midst who claim to follow You because it makes them look good but deep down they harbor resentment against You and your children. Give us discernment Lord to identify these people that disguise themselves that we might not fall for their lies. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Be listening

"Then Gideon said to God, “Do not be angry with me. Let me make just one more request. Allow me one more test with the fleece, but this time make the fleece dry and let the ground be covered with dew.” That night God did so. Only the fleece was dry; all the ground was covered with dew." Judges 6:39,40

Image result for listening for god pic
Although I'm a running coach who creates training plans for others to follow, I don't follow a plan myself and never have. In fact, even as I'm preparing for another 100-mile race, I don't give training much thought. I simply pray for God to reveal the workout of the day and then listen for the Spirit's prompting. But how He revealed it to me yesterday went way beyond a simple nudge. "Lord," I said nearly 6 miles into my run. "Should I turn around now and go back home?" And just as I looked up, I saw that the water crossing in front of me was completely iced over. "Well," I thought to myself. "It sure can't get any clearer than that."

And speaking of signs, wouldn't it be nice if you and I received a clear and immediate answer to every prayer? A sign as obvious as the one Gideon received when God answered his request to "make the fleece dry and let the ground be covered with dew?" And while many times God does reveal His will to us instantaneously and in undeniable ways like this, that's not always the case. Sometimes it takes hours, days or even months of prayer for you and I to discern the answers to our questions.

Perhaps you've been praying for answers today and feel your prayers have gone unheard or that God doesn't care? You can be sure that He does my friend and will answer at the right time. Until then, be patient, be hopeful, be trusting, be worshipful, and most importantly... be listening.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the reminder that our prayers are not always answered as quickly or clearly as we would like. Help us to press on in prayer and continue to trust You during this time knowing that your timing is perfect. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Forget the past

"Forget what happened in the past, and do not dwell on events from long ago." Isaiah 43:18 GNT

Image result for don't look back pic
As a race director, I sometimes have to decide whether a race will be postponed, rescheduled or even canceled due to inclement weather.  These decisions are never made lightly or without consulting others and repeated checks of the forecast though. So when it appeared that the rain we were expecting overnight Friday would transition into snow and ice by morning, I made the final decision to reschedule Saturday's 5k race for the following week, well in advance so people would have notice. And as I ran alone Saturday morning, with none of the ice or snow on the ground as expected, I rebuked myself for having done so, "Sure it’s cold out here but the race could have gone on. You made the wrong choice!"

If we're honest though, most of us would admit that many of the decisions or choices we've made in life were most definitely not the right ones. They might have even caused us or our loved ones pain. But the thing about wrong choices is this... they can't be changed and they can't be undone. And while it's okay to remember those choices so we don't make them again, continually looking back in regret will only cause us to miss out on the future that's in front of us.

So may you and I choose to "forget what happened in the past." After all, God certainly has. And if God has forgiven us, spending our time dwelling "on events from long ago" is pointless. It will only keep us from moving forward and fulfilling the purpose to which God has called us to today.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the reminder that, even as Christians, we won't always make the right decisions. And when our choices are contrary to Your will, help us to repent of them and move forward in forgiveness that we might learn from our shortcomings and serve You better. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus, Amen.

Be that friend

"When he arrived and saw what the grace of God had done, he was glad and encouraged them all to remain true to the Lord with all their hearts." Acts 11:23 NIV

Image result for friends hugging pic
Shortly before our Couch to 5k running group was scheduled to meet for our weekly workout, I received a text, "I am so upset. I won't be able to make it tonight. I REALLY NEED TO BE THERE TONIGHT because of everything that has been going on this week. I need to run and be with everyone." Thankfully, even though she didn't make it in time for the meeting, she did make it in time to run with the group. And that, she said, made all the difference.

And you know, there will be times in each one of our lives that we will need encouragement. Times when we are under attack, undergoing a trial or just simply trying to get through the day - times when we will need a group or person to lift our spirits and motivate us to keep pressing on. Barnabas, whose name actually means 'son of exhortation,' was that type of person. The Bible tells us that he continually "encouraged" those around him to "remain true to the Lord with all their hearts." He was the type of person you and I need in our lives and the type of person you and I need to be to others.

So when we are down, may you and I seek out those people who will lift us up and motivate us to stand firm and keep going, and may we strive to be that person to others that we might all "remain true to the Lord." After all, as J.G Whittier writes, "I'll lift you and you lift me, and we'll both ascend together."

Heavenly Father, thank You giving us friends who will walk with us through the valleys of life and who will listen to and encourage us. May each one of us strive to be like Barnabas that we might continually spur others to remain true when times are hard. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Mornings are the best time

"Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I entrust my life." Psalm 143:8 NIV

Image result for praying with bible pic
Runner's World Magazine recently published an article titled, "What’s Better for Weight Loss: Morning or Evening Workouts?" A new study finds timing could make a difference in your chances of keeping those pounds off. And just as you might have suspected, the research showed that those who stuck close to their goal weights were the ones who worked out in the morning, and worked out at least five days a week. “Consistency is what’s key,” researchers said. “These weight loss maintainers have made activity a habit, just like going to bed early or drinking more water."

And you know, when it comes to forming habits that will benefit us, the Bible is very clear that consistently spending time with the Lord is not only the key to our spiritual health and growth but crucial to discerning God's will for our lives. And what better time to be reminded of God's faithfulness and to ask for guidance than before the day begins? David clearly understood this saying, "Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go..."

So if spending time with the Lord is not the way you consistently begin each day, I would highly urge you to make it a habit my friend. Doing so will not only change the course of your day but the course of your whole life.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the reminder that making You our first priority will transform our lives. Time spent with You in the morning will not only help us determine how we should spend our day but reminds us that You are faithful and always with us which will help us get through our day. May this knowledge help us to make this a habit. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

The right shoes

"For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared." Ephesians 6:15 NLT

Image result for trail shoe gripping snow pic

As I was preparing to head out for a long run last Saturday morning, I opted to wear trail shoes rather than my normal ones. With their durable soles and aggressive tread pattern, I knew they'd be just the right shoe to allow me to gain the firm grip and sure-footedness necesary to keep from slipping on the snow and slush the previous nights' winter storm had dumped on the ground. And from the first step out, I was grateful for that decision. Without the ruggedness and protection of the proper shoe, I would most certainly have not been able to complete the training run I so needed to fit in.

And you know, when it comes to being able to go out and share the Gospel with others as we are commanded, the Bible tells us, "For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared." And this peace that gives us the sure-footedness to press on is the confidence that God will be with us wherever we go. You see, when you and I commit to sharing Christ with the world, we will face opposition and walk through many rough areas that will require us to keep a firm grip on the Truth to keep from sliding or shying away from our mission. Which means we need to wear these shoes!

So remember that you are not alone on this journey my friend. No matter how hard it might seem or how difficult the terrain might feel, don't give up. Press on in your calling to share the "Good News" with all those God puts in your path and have peace knowing that He is with you every step of the way.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the reminder that we are not alone in our pursuit to fulfill the Great Commission. We have the promise that You will be with us, giving us the strength and guidance we need. May we hold on to that promise that we would not allow the temptations, trials and opposition of this world to cause us to lose our grip and fall. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

The brightest light

"Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path." Psalm 119:105

Image result for runner running with headlamp pic
One mile into my morning run and I knew I was in trouble. My headlamp was going dim very quickly and without the moon or even a star in the sky to light the path, I was having great difficulty seeing. "Just make it to the school," I said to myself. "You can run under the lights there until the sun comes up." So dramatically slowing my pace, I fumbled through the near darkness for nearly half-a-mile before finally reaching the school parking lot where I ran circles around it until the sun set light to the morning sky.

And if you've ever tried to run in the early morning hours of winter, you know that a headlamp is a necessity. Even with the keenest of eyes a person can lose their way and get tripped up by even the tiniest of obstacles. The same is true in our spiritual lives as well. Without the Word to guide us and to illuminate God's plan for our lives, you and I are literally in the dark - stumbling through life unsure of where we are going and what the future holds.

Thankfully though, the remedy for spiritual blindness can be found within the pages of the Bible. It's there that you and I will find the words that will literally show us the way we should go and provide clear vision, instruction, encouragement and discernment each step of the way. It's truly the best and brightest "light" that you and I could ever possess.

Heavenly Father, thank You for this much needed reminder today that we are literally in the dark when we don't look to the Word for guidance. Help us to make reading the Bible our very first priority that we might allow you to light our path and guide our feet as we walk along it. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

There will be no warning

"For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark. And they were oblivious, until the flood came and swept them all away. So will it be at the coming of the Son of Man." Matthew 24:38,39

As I was running very early Friday morning, I watched as the Missouri Department of Transportation trucks drove up and down the highway spreading salt in anticipation of the winter storm expected to hit the region within the next few hours, and I was grateful that technology could now predict and warn us of inclement weather in time to get prepared. Especially since, with the calm winds and seasonable temperatures, the predawn's weather gave no indication of what was to come.

And while the National Weather Service regularly issues alerts of incoming bad weather to encourage people to be prepared, the people of Noah's day had no such alert to warn them of the torrential rains headed their way. In fact, the Bible tells us that "in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking" and going about their business as usual, totally "oblivious, until the flood came and swept them all away" and then gives us this warning, "So it will be at the coming of the Son of Man."

And although no one can predict the exact day or time when Christ will return, you can be sure that He will. And when He does, you and I will either be ready or we won't. So if you have not accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior my friend, I would highly urge you to do it right now so you won’t be caught unprepared.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the reminder that You will return one day. And when you do, You will accept only those who have accepted you as Lord of their lives. Help anyone who has not made the decision to follow You realize the importance of not putting that decision off for even one more minute that they might turn to Jesus and have eternal life. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

His love never ends

"The faithful love of the LORD never ends! His mercies never cease." Lamentations 3:22 NLT

Image result for runner in sunshine pic
It might be hard to fathom but, believe it or not, we had several spring-like days right in the middle of winter recently. In fact, it was so beautiful last Saturday that, while I was running on the trail adjacent to the city park, I saw people coming out in droves to jog, walk and play with their children on the playground. You could even spot a few brave runners in shorts and tank tops. And while I would love for the weather pattern to continue, the future forecast reveals something we've all heard and come to expect... all good things must come to an end.

Thankfully though, there are two good things that will never come to an end... God's love and His mercy. The Bible tells us so saying, "The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease." That means that absolutely nothing can make God stop loving us! And though He has every right to punish us for our sin and disobedience, He doesn't. When we repent and turn from our ways, God, in His never-ending mercy, forgives us.

And while it might be hard to comprehend how this type of love, a love so strong it could compel Jesus to die on a cross to save us from our sins, could exist - you can be sure it does. It not only exists my friend but, believe it or not, it will never ever end. Isn't that wonderful news?

Heavenly Father, thank You for the reminder that not all good things come to an end. Especially the time that we have with You. It's refreshing to know that if we have placed our trust in You that we will one day spend eternity in Your presence. Thank you Lord for your never-ending love and forgiveness. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Creation proves it

"For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities--his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God." Romans 1:20 NLT

While many people choose to press the snooze button on Sundays, I look forward to the early morning alarm that wakes me in time to dig into the Word and still get in a run before church. And while this practice always comes with the reward of getting to see the sun come up, Sunday's sunrise caused me to stop in my tracks for several minutes... in total awe of the One who made it. I watched in sheer amazement as the faint yellow turned to orange and then lit up the sky like it was on fire. "Truly," I thought to myself. "How can anyone who has ever seen something like this question the existence of God?"

But you know, the Bible tells us that "ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky." Through everything God has made, they have seen his invisible qualities, namely his eternal power and divine nature and yet still have not acknowledged that God is real. But you can be sure that this world and all the beautiful things in it are not the result of some cosmic accident or gradual assembly of random elements. His creations are too beautiful, intricate and unusual to have come about by chance.

So if you have not placed your trust in the Creator of the universe my friend, look around. The proof of His existence can be found everywhere - from the most intricate petal on a lily to the vast expansion of the ocean. He is real and there is "no excuse" for not believing it.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the reminder that You are real and that You are the Master of the universe. Your creation proves it. For those who don't yet believe Lord, I pray that you would open up their eyes to see the truth and proclaim You as Lord of their life. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Keep the resolutions

"So the angel explained that it was the following message of the LORD to Zerubbabel: I am the LORD All-Powerful. So don't depend on your own power or strength, but on my Spirit." Zechariah 4:6 CEV

Strava, a social fitness network used by thousands of athletes worldwide to track and share their cycling and running stats using GPS data, recently looked at more than 13.5 million entries and found that January 12, not even fully two weeks into the new year, is the day when most people will give up and bail on their resolutions. In fact, researchers from the University of Scranton claim that only eight percent of people meet their New Year's goals every year, while thousands of others with good intentions throw in the towel. Why? Lack of willpower they say.

And if willpower is defined as the ability to control our thoughts and behavior especially in difficult situations, it's no wonder so many of us fail. We are depending on our own strength for the power to succeed and we're just not that strong. But guess what? There is One who is "All-Powerful" and on whose "Spirit" we can depend on and trust in to give us victory. You see, when you and I allow ourselves to be controlled by the Holy Spirit rather than our own will, we have all the willpower we need to give up bad habits and form healthy ones.

"So don't depend on your own power or strength" to help you keep those resolutions my friend. Depend on God and work in the power of his Spirit. I guarantee if you do, January 12 and everyday thereafter will be a day you'll triumph over those things you want to change.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the reminder that without You, we are weak. Help us to depend on You rather than ourselves for the strength and willpower to make life changes that will make us healthier both physically and spiritually. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Inexpressible and glorious joy

"Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy," 1 Peter 1:8 NIV

Image result for laughing runners pic
With 90 minutes to go on the four hour run I had planned Saturday, I received a text from my friend Jackie, "Ok, I had full intentions of coming to the group run this morning but with lack of sleep this week it didn't happen. I do plan on running today, what do I do?" And of course I told her to throw on some clothes and join me! And you know what? She did. And what a fantastic time we had. The sheer joy my Christian sister exuded was contagious. It renewed my spirit and allowed me to finish refreshed and with a smile on my face.

And you know this joy, this "inexpressible and glorious joy" that Jackie radiates is the very joy that every Christian should display. Why? Because though we "have not seen him," we love Him and believe in Him. You see, when you and I truly believe in Jesus Christ and know He is who He says He is, we know the troubles of this world are only temporary and that heaven awaits us. And when we love Him, we feel His love in return. A love so great and magnificent that it fills our very being and spills over into "inexpressible and glorious" joy.

So if you're feeling rundown or spiritually exhausted and void of joy today, won't you call or text one of your Christian brothers or sisters? It could be that a long walk or run with them is the very thing that will have you rejuvenated and joyful again. After all, joy truly is contagious.

Heavenly Father, You were so good to give us friends and I thank You for all of mine. They truly are a blessing. Lord, help us to be those people who exude overwhelming joy that we might lessen the burdens of our friends and draw others to You because of it. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!!!

God of all my days

"No one shall stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you or forsake you." Joshua 1:5

While running early Friday morning, I reminisced as my favorite Christian radio station played the top ten songs of 2018. With each passing tune, I smiled as I recalled the many blessings the previous year had held. But when I heard the words, "Each step I take, You make a way. And I will give You all my praise. My seasons change, You stay the same. You're the God of all my days," the memories caused me to pause mid-run and sob uncontrollably. You see, within a period of two months last year my seasons changed... a lot. I went back to work full time after nearly two decades of being a stay-at-home mom, my son went off to basic training for the Army, my husband began working out of town, my daughter started private school, I couldn't run due to an injury and my world seemed to be spinning out of control.

But you know what? God reminded me over and over again through the words of that song that He indeed was the God of all my days and all my seasons. Nothing that was happening to me then or would happen in the future could ever take Him by surprise. He was in complete control and just as He was with Moses, He was with me. He would never leave me or forsake me and He truly was the God of "all the days" of my life. Oh what peace that knowledge gave me!

Perhaps you're in the middle of a change of seasons right now? Perhaps you're wondering if God even knows or cares? Well I can assure you that He does my friend. Because He has promised to be the God of "all the days of your life" too - and His promises are always true.

Heavenly Father, we are so undeserving of the love, kindness and faithfulness you show us. We can never thank You enough for it. You hold us when we hurt, You give us strength when we are weak and You still our hearts when they are anxious. Thank you Lord for being the God of all our days. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Clean it up

"So get rid of all the filth and evil in your lives, and humbly accept the word God has planted in your hearts, for it has the power to save your souls." James 1:21 NLT

As runners, we all know how much cross training and strength-training can boost our performance and help keep us injury free right? So if you're like me, you probably hit the gym a few times a week in addition to the miles you log. Well if you do, you might want to rethink the things you touch until you've personally cleaned them with sanitizer. According to a New York-based gym attendant who wished to remain anonymous, some of the filthiest things you and I can touch at the gym are treadmill handles, padded benches and shower floors.

And you know, when it comes to spiritual filthiness, the Bible is very clear that we are not to tolerate it. In fact, James says to get right of "all the filth and evil" in our lives. Not just part of it, but all of it and to then "humbly accept the word God has planted" in our hearts. Simply said, that means you and I need to thoroughly and completely clean ourselves of any impure thoughts, habits or actions we have that we might meekly and respectfully accept the message of salvation, for it is the only thing that has the power to save our souls.

So as we begin this new year, let us resolve to get clean and stay clean my friend. May we rid ourselves of anything that might hinder our relationship with the Lord or our witness to the world and be bold in sharing the message of salvation with others, knowing it has the power to save their souls as well.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the reminder that we live in a sinful world that is in need of spiritual cleansing. Lord, help us to rid ourselves of any moral filth and evil that we have inside that we might help others do the same. Help us to be bold that we might lead others to the foot of the Cross. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

The Best best friend

"I no longer call you slaves, because a master doesn't confide in his slaves. Now you are my friends, since I have told you everything the Father told me." John 15:15

Image result for runner looking at sky pic
As I approached the pair of young ladies coming in the opposite direction on the trail I was running on Sunday, it was clear by their behavior that they were friends. Keeping in step with one another, I could hear them laughing and chatting as the two made their way. "I bet they've been running together a long time," I thought to myself. "I'm so glad that I have a friend to run with every day too." And you know, although my friend can't be perceived with the eyes, He is as real to me as anything I can touch and see. And He is my very best friend in the world.

And if a friend is defined as a person whom one knows and with whom one has a bond of mutual affection, isn't it wonderful to know that the feeling is reciprocal? In fact, Jesus loves you and me so much that, although He is Lord, He chooses to be our friend saying, "I no longer call you slaves, because a master doesn't confide in his slaves. Now you are my friends..." And since He reveals to us everything the Father has revealed to Him, you can be sure that Jesus is the best friend to ask for advice on those long runs. Could there be a more perfect friend and running partner to have?

So if you see me seemingly talking, singing or laughing to myself as I run, don't be alarmed. I'm simply enjoying some time and conversation with my best friend. It's the one thing I look forward to the most each and every day.

Heavenly Father, thank You for loving us so much that You would actually choose to call us friends although we are so undeserving of the title. Help us to grasp that as much as we love You, You love us more and want to be the center of our lives. Oh Jesus. may we make the choice each day to walk and talk with You above anyone else. May we make You our best friend. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Seek Him first

"Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need." Matthew 6:33 NLT

Image result for reading bible in morning pic
Every January, thousands of people will make New Year's resolutions hoping to spark positive changes in their lives. You might even be one of them. You might even share one or several of the top ten most common resolutions they will make which are: to exercise more, lose weight, get organized, learn a new skill or hobby, live life to the fullest, save more/spend less, quit smoking, spend more time with family and friends, travel more, and read more.

And while there are many things a person can do to ensure the success of keeping those resolutions like breaking up big goals into smaller goals, the best way to spark a positive change in your life is to do only one thing... "Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously." You see, when you and I put Jesus first and make Him our number one priority, all the other things in life will fall into place. And when you and I seek and follow the Word "above all else", we will have the discipline and discernment to make wise choices, thus eliminating the need to make all those resolutions.

So may we make only one resolution, or firm decision, for 2019 my friend. Let us resolve to seek the Lord more than anything else and to live in a way that honors Him this year and in the years to come. It will truly be the best decision you and I could ever make.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the reminder that living life right is not as hard as it appears. Help us to truly grasp that if we would only seek You first, we will have everything we need. Knowing that, may each one of us then make following You our number one goal for 2019. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.
