I will trust in You

"All the Israelites grumbled against Moses and Aaron, and the whole assembly said to them, "If only we had died in Egypt! Or in this wilderness!" Numbers 14:2 NIV

On October 12, Beth James, 54, and her daughter Liza, 23, who became nonverbal and unable to walk after suffering a devastating brain injury during a car accident at age 6, became the first mother-daughter special team duo to compete in the Ironman World Championships. And while they were able to complete the 2.4 mile swim (Beth pulled Liza in a float strapped to her) and the 112-mile bike ride (Beth pulled Liza behind her in a 21-pound racing chair), they missed the cutoff to complete the 26.2 mile run. But that won't stop Beth, who refuses to spend time thinking about "if only" this hadn't happened, from doing more Ironmans with Liza. She will press on saying, “Life is a gift. Each and every moment of each and every day is priceless. Don’t ever take it for granted. Do not ever complain. There’s always positives surrounding you.”

And you know, Beth is right. Life is a gift and something you and I should never take for granted. And while we can't control many of the things that happen to us in this life, we can control the way we react to them. Can you imagine how differently Beth's life would have turned out had she chosen to lament over her daughter's accident and spend her time complaining and saying, "If only this hadn't happened?" She would never have experienced the life God had for her. But by focusing on the positives, Beth allowed the Lord to use her in ways she probably never could have imagined.

So in remembering how the grumbling of the Israelites caused them to lose out on entering the promised land, let us choose to trust that God has a perfect plan for us and for our lives. And then let us refuse to give voice to, "if only" but choose to say, "Lord, I don't understand my situation but I don't have to. I will trust in You."

Heavenly Father, thank You for being a God we can trust. Over and over again, You have promised to work all things for the good of those who believe in You. Engrave that promise on our hearts Lord so that we will trust You in any and every situation. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Pursue patience

“But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,” Galatians 5:22 NLT

Image result for waiting on the lord pic
Immediately upon waking up, I clearly heard it... rain, and lots of it, hitting our metal roof. And while normally that sound wouldn’t deter me from getting dressed and heading out for a miry run, yesterday was different. “It’s cold. It’s dark. And it’s wet Melissa. Stay inside today,” the Spirit said. After wrestling with that for a brief moment since I really wanted to head outside for a run, the Lord reminded me that we were under a winter weather advisory in the middle of Fall. “I get it,” I said as I smiled and headed to the elliptical for some cross training. “I must surely need a rest day.”

And you know, every morning I go to the Lord in Bible study and prayer before heading out the door. And while it might seem trivial, I ask Him to guide me through every part of my day, including my workouts. And while most times, I can clearly hear His voice (like yesterday), there are times when I have to repeatedly go to Him to seek answers - times, I have learned, that the Lord uses to develop and grow my patience. You see, patience, or the ability to accept delay, suffering, or annoyance without complaining or becoming angry, doesn’t come naturally to any of us. That’s why it’s a fruit of the Spirit and not of the flesh. But it’s a trait you and I absolutely must cultivate if we are to be more like Christ who patiently endured suffering to give us eternal life.

So if you’re in a period of waiting my friend, be grateful that the Lord is using this time to make you more like Him. And then press on in your pursuit to seek answers, patient and confident that He will answer in His time and not yours.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the lessons You teach us in the quiet times when we must patiently wait to hear your voice. Help us to cherish these times of waiting knowing they are helping to form us into people who will never give up seeking You and will wait on You as long as necessary remembering that a day to You is like a thousand years to us. It’s in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Forego the complaining

"Now the people complained about their hardships in the hearing of the Lord, and when he heard them his anger was aroused. Then fire from the Lord burned among them and consumed some of the outskirts of the camp. When the people cried out to Moses, he prayed to the Lord and the fire died down." Numbers 11:1,2

Image result for people complaining pic

"You've got to be kidding me!" I exclaimed audibly as a heavy mist rolled in early yesterday morning and brought my visibility down to nearly zero within seconds. Even with my powerful headlamp, I had to slow down to a walk to avoid tripping on the uneven surface I was running on. "Oh why can't I live in a town that has a decent trail with lights?" I said out loud. Knowing complaining would get me nowhere though, I prayed, "Lord, I desperately need some light!" And then, upon turning around saw the brightly illuminated Dollar General building. "Oh thank you Lord!" I exclaimed as I carefully made my way to their parking lot where I spent the next hour singing praise songs while running loops until the sun came up.

And you know, if we’re honest, we would all admit to complaining from time to time. But before we think it's perfectly okay to express our dissatisfaction or annoyance about something, let us consider this... when the Israelites "complained about their hardships in the hearing of the Lord.. his anger was aroused." But when Moses "prayed to the Lord.. the fire died down." You see, when the people complained to one another they accomplished nothing more than spreading their bad attitude, but when Moses took their complaint straight to the Lord, the Lord provided answers.

So avoid the urge to complain to others my friend. Not only will you solve nothing by doing so but will poison the atmosphere around you. Take your grievances directly to the Lord instead and allow Him to guide you in rectifying them. You will not only please God when you do so but will gain the respect of others by your wise judgement.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the reminder that complaining solves nothing, especially when we voice those complaints to others. Help us to remember that You always have the answers to any problem we might have and hold the wisdom to help us put things into perspective and see the truth. Teach us to hold our tongues Lord and to bring all our perceived wrongs to you letting our speech reflect our gratefulness. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen,

Happy Running!!!

Give us rest

"Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.'" Psalm 91:1,2 NIV

Image result for runner sleeping pic
In a recent study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, researchers said, "You can run a lot, eat well, avoid cigarettes, be built like an Olympian, and have no genetic predisposition for heart disease, but if you skimp on your sleep your heart may still be at risk." Futhermore the study of nearly a half-million people between the ages of 40-69 over seven years concluded, "Those who slept fewer than six hours nightly were 20 percent more likely to have a heart attack during the study period than those who snoozed for 7 to 8 hours a night. Those clocking just five hours of shuteye per night had a 52 percent higher risk than those who got 7 to 8 hours a night." Wow. That should make us want to get more shuteye. Woudn't you agree?

And you know, even though research clearly shows the detrimental effects not getting the proper amount of rest has on our bodies, one in three adults still gets less than seven hours of slumber per night. And one of the biggest reasons for not being able to doze is fear and worry. But as the psalmist clearly understood, when we place our trust in God, we can be free from the worries and concerns that keep us from sleeping. In fact, when we choose to reside or dwell in the presence of the Lord, we will always find our much-needed "rest in the shadow of the Almighty."

So if you're struggling to fall asleep, won't you trade those anxious thoughts that keep you up at night for the peace of knowing that God is your "refuge" and will provide for all your needs and keep you safe? So give Him your life my friend and He, in turn, will give you the rest you so desperately need.

Heavenly Father, thank You for being the God whose promises are always true. Over and over, your Word declares and proves that we can trust in You. Help us to do that very thing Lord. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!!!

Give it your all

"Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God--this is your true and proper worship." Romans 12:1 NIV

Image result for runner on mountain top pic
Early last week, 38-year-old professional runner Shalane Flanagan announced her retirement from the sport. After a historic career, Shalane decided it was time to transition her skills to coaching saying, "From 2004 to 2019 I’ve given everything that’s within me to this sport and wow it’s been an incredible ride! I’ve broken bones, torn tendons, and lost too many toenails to count... my passion and purpose is no longer about MY running; it’s more and more about those around me. All I’ve ever known, in my approach to anything, is going ALL IN. So I’m carrying this to coaching." I have no doubt Flanagan will be an amazing coach.

And you know, when it comes to going 'all in,' or giving an all-out effort to achieve something, Paul wrote that, "in view of God's mercy," every believer is to give their bodies as "a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God." You see, God owes us nothing and, in fact, rather than subjecting us to the death we deserve chose to give us salvation through Jesus Christ instead. And in response to this great act of mercy, our lives should be lived in service to Him with our time spent working tirelessly and sacrificially to fulfill the purpose for which He has set us apart.

So may we live each day going 'all in' to know Him more and to make Him known through our words and actions. May we lay our lives down at His feet and say, "Here I am Lord. Use me... all of me. I give you everything I have in worship and in service to You. Lead me and guide me and let my life reflect my thankfulness for Jesus' sacrifice on the Cross."

Heavenly Father, thank You for giving your all for us by the sacrifice of your son Jesus Christ so we could have the forgiveness of sins. Help us to show our thankfulness by serving You with all we have, holding nothing back and living to win others to the foot of the Cross and to bring You the glory You so rightfully deserve. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Go ahead and dance

"And David danced before the LORD with all his might, wearing a priestly garment." 2 Samuel 6:14 NLT

Image result for marathon runner dancing
"Shuffle all Music" I commanded Siri. "Playing all music shuffled," she replied. And then it began, "Take the shackles off my feet so I can dance. I just wanna praise You, I just wanna praise You. You broke the chains now I can lift my hands. I just wanna praise you. I just wanna praise you." Whoa! That was not the song I expected and the beat soon caused me to stop in the middle of the backroad I was running on to throw my hands up in praise and start dancing. I just couldn't help myself as I basked in God's presence, thankful that the shackles of pride and fear of what other people might think if I worshiped with abandon had been taken off years ago and I was free to worship with all my might.

And you know, when it comes to unabashedly worshiping God, the Bible tells us that King David "danced before the Lord with all his might." David didn't even care that he was "wearing a priestly garment" and was expected to act dignified. He just wanted to give God praise. Wow! That must have been one good dance session, don't you think? And David had every reason to be filled with this outpouring of joy that couldn't be contained. He was leading the procession that was bringing the Ark of the Lord to Jerusalem, a move that would bring God's blessing on the entire nation.

And you know, each and every believer has a reason to be this joyful because we are saved! Do you get that? That means no matter what happens to us on this earth, we have the forgiveness of sins and will spend eternity with the Father. So take those "shackles," aka anything that keeps you from worshiping the Lord with all your mind, body and spirit, off and dance before the Lord my friend. You'll be glad you did.

Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us so many reasons to be filled with joy each and every day. Help us to truly grasp how gracious and merciful You are Lord that we would be people filled with the urge to express our love for you through song and dance and shouts of praise without fear of embarrassment. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

We are blessed when we give

"And I have been a constant example of how you can help those in need by working hard. You should remember the words of the Lord Jesus: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’" Acts 20:35 NLT

Image result for helping homeless pic
As I was finishing up my run Saturday morning with a cool-down walk, I struck up a conversation with a group of ladies who were also enjoying a stroll in the park. We weren't talking very long before I noticed something that could have caused the woman currently speaking to trip. "Sorry to interrupt you," I said to her. "But your shoe is untied. May I please tie it for you?” Oh thank you so much," the older woman, who most likely would have had a hard time bending down to do it herself, replied as I got into position to secure the laces. "You ladies have a fantastic day," I then said as I headed to my van, totally blessed by the random encounter.

And you know, it truly is "more blessed to give than to receive" because giving, when done with the right motive, is an outpouring of the love of Jesus Christ within us and a reminder of how blessed we are to be loved by the Father. And giving, whether it be of our time, talents, or possessions should come natural to every believer, so natural that each one of us would, like Paul, be able to say, "I have been a constant example of how you can help those in need by working hard." Can you just imagine the impact the church (that's you and me my friend and not a building) could have on the world if each member could confidently say that?

So let us strive to do more than just say we care about the lost and "those in need." Let us be people of action who show them that we care by our good deeds and the genuine love they convey. After all, we are the ones who are truly blessed when we do.

Heavenly Father, thank You giving us the perfect example of love to follow. Jesus never missed an opportunity to do good and worked tirelessly to serve others out of love. Help us to strive to do the same and in doing so win the lost to the foot of the Cross. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

What are you waiting for

"What are you waiting for? Get up and be baptized. Have your sins washed away by calling on the name of the Lord.'" Acts 22:16 NLT

“People often tell me that they’re inspired by my running, and they’re encouraged to do more to stay active because of it. I feel like this is my job and my purpose now, to get people moving, no matter their age.” These were the words of Andrea Harrison who definitely knows the importance of regular physical exercise and that it’s never too late to start doing it. At 85, Andrea, who didn't begin running until she was 50, took home two medals at the National Senior Games and says running helps to clear away all the worries and bothers of every day life. Now, she says, when people approach her and say, "If you can run like this, I should be running," she says, "Well, go ahead. What are you waiting for?"

And you know, just as Andrea discovered, each one of us has a specific job and purpose in life. And as Christians, our purpose in this life is very clear... we are to know God and make Him made known. Plain and simple, we are to use the time, talents, and treasures God has given us on this earth to love, serve, and witness to others. And we are not to tarry in doing this my friend. The Bible is very clear on that when it gave us the example of Paul who after conversion, knowing there was no time to spare, immediately gave his life to the Lord and went out into the world to do his part in fulfilling the Great Commission

So in the words Ananias spoke to Paul, "What are you waiting for?” Life is short and the time to act is now. There are people in our own neighborhoods that need to hear the message of Salvation before it’s too late. Will you go and share it?

Heavenly Father, You are more than worthy of all our praise and devotion. Fill us with an urgency to be like Jesus Lord that we wouldn't hesitate to go out into the world to love and serve others the way He did. Give us a heart to reach the lost and those in need Lord. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Socially acceptable

"Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter." Isaiah 5:20 NIV

Image result for runner eating pie pic
In an article published by Canadian Running Monday, it was noted that many runners have either completed their first fall marathon or are in the final weeks of preparing for it. And like many other long-distance runners, these athletes will be struggling with emotional and physical fatigue. This fatigue, the article said, can lead to certain practices that wouldn't be common at many other times but are socially acceptable post-race and so are totally okay to do. Just a few of those practices listed were eating pie for breakfast, telling anyone who will listen how hard the marathon was, buying out the Band-aid section of your local drug store and having a plethora of bedside table snacks since the marathon leaves you with a hunger that doesn't go away while you sleep.

And you know, while the standard for what behavior is acceptable after a long-distance race might continually change, God's standard for what is acceptable behavior never changes no matter how 'socially acceptable' some behaviors might have become. In fact, Isaiah was clear that those people who blur the lines of what the Bible says is right and wrong to justify their agenda or lifestyle and "who call evil good and good evil" will face God's judgement.

So in a world that is ever-expanding its’ list of things that are now acceptable, let us hold tight to our convictions my friend, looking only to the Bible when determining what behaviors are right and wrong. And then... let us love others in the same way Jesus did without compromising our stand on the Truth no matter how ‘socially acceptable’ a sin has become.

Heavenly Father, thank You for being a God whose Word never changes. Help us to always remember that the standards of acceptable behavior recorded 2,000 years ago are the same standards of behavior that are acceptable today no matter what the world may say. Help us to stand firm in our faith Lord, refusing to compromise what we know to be true. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Each job is important

"The one who plants is just as important as the one who waters. And each one will be paid for what they do. Apollos and I work together for God, and you are God's garden and God's building." 1 Corinthians 3:8,9 CEV

"Thank you so much for coming out today! It's always a pleasure seeing you." I said to my friend, Jennifer, in a text upon sending pictures from the Donut Run 5k we both participated in Saturday. After thanking me for the photos, she added, "Maybe someday I'll actually run!!!" And my response? "You are perfect doing what you're doing!! You're inspiring other walkers to be out there. Keep it up!!" And you know what? Jennifer and her group of walkers are totally motivating people to get out and take part in events such as this by showing that a person doesn't have to run fast or even run at all to be an athlete and take part in races... they simply have to show up at the start line with the intent of reaching the finish line.

And you know, when it comes to an athletes' pace, have you ever considered that God gave us all different paces so we could be in different places along the course to be used in different ways to reach different people? And for that reason every pace is just as important and necessary as another. Paul certainly understood that God gave everyone different abilities for a reason saying that, while he planted the seed, Apollos watered it—but added "the one who plants is just as important as the one who waters... Apollos and I work together for God." You see, every job the Lord assigns us is important no matter how insignificant it may seem and it's only when we understand this and willingly "work together for God" that great things can be accomplished.

So celebrate your pace today my friend whether you're walking, running or sprinting, and give God the glory for it. And remember, whether you're fast, slow, or somewhere in-between, you are a one-of-a-kind creation designed to serve in your own unique way within the family of God.

Heavenly Father, thank You for being a God who cares about the details. You have made us all so unique Lord and yet with a common purpose... to love You, to love others and to serve. Give us a desire to do this to the best of our ability where we are and with the skills you have given us knowing that every job in the Kingdom matters. Help us to work together Lord that we might lead the lost to the foot of the Cross in record numbers. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Grateful for Salvation

"He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time." 2 Timothy 1:9 NIV

"Wow! How cool is this?" I thought to myself as I ran through the normally quiet downtown Waynesville square Saturday morning that was now packed with vendors, music and people as part of a Fall Festival. But as intent as I was to finish my run and get home, I was compelled to stop upon seeing a giant three sided chalkboard that read, "What are you grateful for?" "Oh my," I thought smiling. "That answer is so simple. The single most important thing I am grateful for in this life is the salvation provided through my Savior, Jesus Christ." So picking up a piece of chalk, I wrote 'salvation' on the board and then hurried on my way, tears welling up as I pondered the hopeless place I would be without Jesus.

And you know, salvation or the deliverance from sin and its' consequences was only made possible by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ who, "not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace," bore the consequences that were rightfully ours and chose to die a sinners death. And if that thought doesn't bring you to tears, let me ask you something, "Where would you be without Jesus?" I know where I would be my friend. I would be desperately lost. And that's why I'm so very thankful for the unending and undeserving love Jesus displayed for me the day He freely gave his life to provide forgiveness for my sins.

So knowing that Jesus loves you just as much as He loves me, I hope you have already accepted Jesus’ offer of salvation. But if you haven’t, won't you do so today? I promise it will be the best decision you will ever make - one you will be eternally grateful for.

Heavenly Father, thank You for loving us before the beginning of time and for extending us the grace You knew we could never earn. Father, help us to truly grasp what salvation means that we might be so truly grateful for this gift that we would want to share it with the world. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Know when to move on

"But when they opposed and insulted him, Paul shook the dust from his clothes and said, “Your blood is upon your own heads—I am innocent. From now on I will go preach to the Gentiles.'" Acts 18:6 NLT

On Sunday, October 6, Dan McDowell, 37, of Portland joined several hundred other runners at the start line of the Portland Marathon, a race under new management and with a new route. Seeking to obtain a sub 2:45 time, McDowell was hopeful that the years of snafus the event was infamous for under the old management were now a thing of the past. Unfortunately for him though, Dan was one of about 20 of the race's fastest runners who took a wrong turn at an intersection that lacked a clear sign. By the time McDowell realized what had happened, he knew it was too late to achieve his goal and so admitted to having a little bit of a meltdown before deciding to drop out and save his legs for another day - undoubtedly a hard call to make but a wise one since continuing on would only have drained him of the strength and energy to run the next race and achieve the goal time he really wanted.

And you know, as this story shows, there will be a time in everyone's life when they will face a hopeless situation and have to decide whether to press on or move on. Paul certainly understood this when he, after devoting himself exclusively to testifying to the Jews that Jesus was the Messiah, was met with intense opposition and insults. Knowing the situation was hopeless, Paul made the wise decision to save his strength and energy and move on saying, "From now on I will go preach to the Gentiles." And because of this decision, the Bible tells us that many of the Corinthians who heard Paul believed and were baptized.

So you see, if Paul had continued to try and persuade the Jews of Jesus' true identity, he would have missed out on the opportunity to bring many Gentiles to Christ. So let us learn from Paul's example my friend. May we move on in the midst of clearly hopeless situations that we might not waste our strength and energy on anything less than what God has planned for us.

Heavenly Father, thank You for being the God who is worthy of all praise and honor. Lord, please give us utmost discernment to know when we should press on and when we should move on. May our number one priority be to serve You in the place and in the way that we can reach the most people. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Its all temporary

"For my days vanish like smoke; my bones burn like glowing embers." Psalm 102:3

image
James Chandler, 35, was registered and ready to run the Chicago Marathon that took place last weekend. The only problem was, as a Soldier in the United States Army, James had been given orders to deploy to Afghanistan in May and arrived there a little over a month ago. Not wanting to miss the opportunity to run for his favorite charity Camp One Step which he had done since 2014, Chandler arranged to run the 26.2 mile race at his camp, finishing in a time of 4:10:07. And while James received none of the standard fanfare, he was glad to do it saying, "Thinking about where I am and my situation, it’s temporary. But thinking about the different kids I’ve worked with at camp who have these life-altering courses they don’t always get to go home after, it’s just a reminder that life is good. An opportunity to help support them is important to me because I know what it means to those kids."

And you know, James is right. Wherever you and I happen to be right now and whatever situation we might find ourselves in, whether it be good or bad, it is all temporary. In fact, the psalmist clearly understood how temporary, short and fleeting life was that he wrote, "my days vanish like smoke." And since our days will quickly vanish and pass away, we would all do well to make the most of each one of them by using every opportunity we have to help others and to make God known among the nations.

So if God is calling you to do something today, don't put it off and don't make excuses for why it can't be done my friend. You and I only have one chance to make this life count and to make a difference in the lives of others. So let's do it. Let's live it well.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the much needed reminder that life is very short and we should strive to live it the best we can, giving all we have in service to You. Give us a passion to serve others where we are Lord and to reach out to the lost. Most of all Lord, help us to be obedient to do those things You have called us to without hesitation. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Have a blessed day

"I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little." Philippians 4:12 NLT

Related image

After running for nearly two hours in the brisk temps Saturday morning, I was really looking forward to a hot cup of coffee from my favorite convenience store. So after pouring myself a delectable warm drink, I walked up to the counter to pay with a huge smile on my face. "Thank you for shopping at Kum and Go, have a blessed day," the young man behind the counter said. And just like that, my huge smile got even bigger! "I certainly will," I replied as I walked off holding back the urge to skip. "And you do the same." I added.

And you want to know why I could without a doubt say that I would most certainly have a blessed day? Because there's nothing that that day, or any other day for that matter, could hold that could take away my joy. You see, Paul had it all figured out when he wrote, "I have learned the secret of living in every situation..." And the secret to having a blessed day or a day filled with joy has nothing to do with our present situation or whether we have "plenty or little." It is simply this... living each moment with the knowledge that Jesus is all we will ever need and He will never leave us nor forsake us.

I don't know about you my friend but I truly believe that the ability to be content in any situation and to see each day as blessed is nothing short of a gift from God. So go ahead and smile and even skip if you want to for the day the Lord has made, because no matter what happens you and I can always have a blessed day.

Heavenly Father, thank You for being a God whose mere presence fills believers with an unspeakable joy that can't be explained. Help us to always seek You first that we might be so full of this joy in every situation that others would seek the Source of this joy that can't be explained. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Our sin affects others

"Now, therefore, the sword will never depart from your house, because you despised me and took the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your own.'" 2 Samuel 12:10 NIV

In 2001, Nike launched the Nike Oregon Project with the stated goal of making American distance runners competitive again on the world stage. And with famed coach Aberto Salazar's expert instruction and training, many American runners went on to medal in the Olympics and/or have great success on the marathon course through the NOP. Sadly though, Nike announced last week that it would be shutting down the project after Salazar was found guilty of three doping code violations and given a four-year-ban on coaching- a decision that greatly affects those runners currently training with Salazar under the Nike Oregon Project who were working hard to break some records.

And you know, unless you and I live alone on a desert island, our sins will always have a negative effect on others. Consider David who committed adultery with Bathsheba and had his best friend Uriah killed to cover up the affair. Not only did murder become a constant threat in his household because of the transgression but calamity ensued as his children rebelled against him, his wives were taken away and given to someone else in public view and his first child with Bathsheba died. And while David repented of his sin and was completely forgiven, he was still left to face the consequences of his disobedience - consequences that were felt for generations.

So knowing that disobedience always has far-reaching and far-lasting consequences, may you and I make a renewed vow to stay focused on God that we might not fall into the temptation to compromise our integrity for any reason. Because as both stories show, doing so will not only damage our witness but discredit our character.

Heavenly Father, thank You for being a Holy God that forgives. Help us to see the importance of leading godly lives Lord that we might spare our children, family and friends the heartache and pain our sin might cause. Give us a passion to keep our eyes stayed on You. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Unsung heroes

"Not finding them there, they dragged out Jason and some of the other believers instead and took them before the city council. “Paul and Silas have caused trouble all over the world,” they shouted, “and now they are here disturbing our city, too. And Jason has welcomed them into his home..." Acts 17:6,7 NLT

"Great job on your race last weekend," my friend said when she saw me yesterday. "Thank you," I said. "I surely can't take credit for it though. We had some great sponsors and a ton of volunteers out on the course and behind the scenes that made it happen. They’re the ones who deserve the praise.” And you know, it's true. Without the 'unsung heroes' who selflessly worked behind the scenes because they have a heart to serve and a genuine love for other people, giving of their time without the need for recognition or praise, the 6th Annual Frog Hill Half/10k/5k would never have happened. Nor would a million other things!

And you know, when it comes to 'unsung heroes,' or people who do good deeds without any desire of receiving any recognition for them, the Bible tells us very little about a man named Jason except that he welcomed Paul and Silas into his home when they arrived in Thessalonica, opening himself up to prosecution for the disturbance and trouble the two men caused in the city. But Jason didn't care. He wasn't looking for fame but, motivated by his genuine love for the Lord and for other people, was willing to selflessly play his part in spreading the Gospel even if it included suffering, thus making himself an ‘unsung hero.’

So if you're one of those people who works behind the scenes, pat yourself on the back my friend. While you may not be acknowledged for your good deeds by those around you, you can be sure that God sees each one and will one day reward you for every act that goes unnoticed.

Heavenly Father, thank You for being a God who is worthy of all our praise. And thank you Lord for the reminder that people who work behind the scenes are as crucial for the advancement of the Gospel and winning the lost as the preacher who speaks in front of a million people. Help us to remember that every person's part matters and should be done with joy and motivated by love. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

The unconventional talent

"God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another." 1 Peter 4:10 NLT

Image result for marathon pacer pic

When I was asked to pace the 4:45 group at the upcoming Bass Pro Marathon, I was overjoyed! You see, not only do I love this 26.2 mile race but I absolutely love pacing because of the opportunity it gives me to use my God-given talent of being able to talk for hours-on-end to help a runner keep his or her mind focused as they make their way to the finish line. And if you think that's not a talent, have you ever tried running for nearly five hours straight while attempting to be witty and keep a one-sided conversation flowing, all the while keeping a consistent pace? So you see, it really is a talent... one I'm so thankful to have because of the many doors it has opened to share the Gospel.

And you know, a talent is defined as a natural ability to be good at something, especially without being taught--which means it's something we are usually born with. Just ask my mother who says I've been talking nonstop from the day I could form a word. And while you might not have been born with a 'conventional' talent such as the ability to sing well or play the guitar in the church praise band either, we all have at least one thing we are particularly good at. But no matter what talent you and I have, there's one thing our "great variety of spiritual gifts" have in common. They were all given to us by God to "serve one another."

So find what you do well my friend and use your gift to share the Good News and to help others. And remember, even the most 'unconventional' talent can benefit someone when God puts us in the perfect spot to use it.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the reminder that even the most unconventional talents can be used to bring You glory and draw others to the foot of the Cross. Help us to determine the things we are good at Lord and to be obedient in going where You call us so our talents can be used to serve others well.  It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Choose your friends wisely

"Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm." Proverbs 13:20 ESV

As the race director of the Frog Hill Half/10k/5k, I am used to getting a lot of emails with questions about the course, packet pickup, discount codes and common race day instructions. And while most times the questions are general and very easy to answer I knew one inquiry I received last week, just days before the event was set to occur, regarding the distribution of photos would require me to seek counsel. You see, I was completely unsure how to answer the question without sounding uncaring or unprofessional so I sought the advice of a dear friend and fellow race director who I admired and trusted. And you know what? She provided a response so 'perfect' that it opened up an opportunity for me to not only answer the question properly but to extend some caring and kindness that I felt was much needed by the sender of the email.

And you know, when it comes to learning how to handle certain situations or even navigate life in general, the Bible is clear that, "whoever walks with the wise becomes wise" and whoever is "the companion of fools will suffer harm." Spiritually speaking, that means when you and I seek out and heed good and godly instruction, we make good and proper decisions and learn from the experience thus becoming wise. But if we seek out and heed bad instruction from someone who is not following Christ, the results are disastrous.

So when looking to become wiser, look to wise people my friend. Walk with them, associate with them and mimic them (keeping in mind that ‘perfect' advice will always align with the Word) and you'll soon benefit from their knowledge, example and instruction.

Heavenly Father, thank You for those people we can turn to for good and godly advice. People who choose to always do the right thing, serving as a role model for others. Help us to strive to grow in the knowledge of your Word and in your love that we might be those people to others as well. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

No practice runs in life

"So I run with purpose in every step. I am not just shadowboxing." 1 Corinthian 9:26 NLT

On October 6, 2019 Dan Robertson crossed the finish line of the MO' Cowbell Marathon, something he thought was impossible two years ago when he was diagnosed with a torn disc in his back and advised by his doctor to give up running. And while Dan did give it up for a while, by God's grace he was able to heal and get back to the sport he so dearly loved. The experience changed his priorities though. "So I now run with purpose in every step" he said. In other words, Dan now runs to glorify the Father and the Great Physician who not only healed him but gave him eternal life.

And you know, when it comes to running "with purpose," our purpose or intention or objective should always be to lead others to Christ-something we do when we run the race well, disciplining ourselves both physically, spiritually and mentally to follow Christ and let His light shine through us. You see, there are no 'practice runs' in life. You and I only get one chance to make our time count and the only way we do that is by keeping our eyes on the finish line and living each day in preparation to reach it and lead others to do the same.

So live each day "with purpose" my friend, doing only those things that will make an eternal difference in the lives of those around you so when the race is over, you will have no regrets and will finally hear the words you long to hear, "Well done, good and faithful servant."

Heavenly Father, thank you for the reminder that there are no practice runs in life. We only have one chance to make a difference and will be held accountable for both the things we did do and the things we didn't do. Give us an urgency Lord to glorify You in all we do that others might see You in us and be drawn to the foot of the Cross. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!!!

God will be there

"For this God is our God for ever and ever; he will be our guide even to the end." Psalm 48:14 NIV

After serving in the military for eight years, Katiee Knight says she put on a few pounds when she got out of the Army. But it wasn't until she was violently raped in 2010 that her weight completely spiraled out of control. "I just gave up on everything. I gained and gained weight." Katiee then spent the next eight years struggling with the number on the scale, especially after losing everything she owned in the flood of 2013. Finally though, at 350 pounds, Katiee had had enough. On September 4, she decided to change her life for good and underwent gastric bypass surgery. And guess what? Just weeks after the procedure she made another huge decision... to get fit. And so on October 4, four weeks to the day of her surgery and 25 pounds lighter, Katie showed up to the start line of the Leapfrog 5k and finished her first race in four years! "I'm very proud of myself even though I was dead last,” she said. “It's been a rough four weeks but I will be okay and get through it and God will be there.."

And you know what? Katiee is so right. God will be there. "For this God," that you and I serve, "is our God for ever and ever." And we can be certain that, "he will be our guide even to the end." And just how can we be certain? Because God's inspired Word is true and He, Himself has declared it. That means you and I never have to walk alone and we never have to worry about the direction we should travel when we place our full trust in Him and allow Him to lead the way.

So if you're struggling to make a decision today or feel like God has abandoned you, take heart my friend. God is with you always "even to the end" and wants to lead you through this life, providing the comfort, guidance and strength you need to make it to the finish line. Will you trust Him to do that today?

Heavenly Father, thank You for the reminder that You are always by our side. Help us to look to You in those times we are in need of comfort rather than to the temporary things of this world Lord that will only leave us with regret. Help us to be strong in making those decisions that will make us healthier both physically and spiritually and lead us closer to You. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Pursue that Personal Relationship

"Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore glorify God with your body." 1 Corinthians 6:19,20

Image result for runner at sunrise pic
As I stopped to take pictures of the beautiful sunrise emerging before me while on my early morning run before church last Sunday, the Lord prompted me to recall how I had changed as a runner over the last decade. And as I did, I could only shake my head at the thought of how I once was a highly competitive person that tenaciously chased PR's (Personal Records), rarely slowing down enough to admire God's creation much less stopping to grab a photo of the beauty of it. Oh how I smiled at the thought of how I now chase a different kind of PR above all else... a Personal Relationship with Jesus Christ, a relationship that has forever changed my life and my running.

And you know, as I pondered this revelation more and more with every step, I felt convicted about having once based my identity on being a runner who happened to be a Christian rather than a Christian who happened to be a runner. You see, the Bible tells us that our bodies are not our own because you and I were "bought at a price." And since our bodies belong to the Lord, everything we do should serve to "glorify God" and not ourselves.

So go ahead and chase that Personal Record my friend. But remember Whose you are and to Whom you belong and pursue that Personal Relationship above all else. After all, there is no medal, plaque, award, acclamation, or trophy you and I could ever earn that could compare to the joy of giving Him the glory that He is due.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the reminder that we are, first and foremost, your children, grafted into the family of believers by Jesus' sacrifice on the Cross. Give us the desire Lord to use all that You have given us, namely our time, treasures and talents to bring You the glory that You alone are due. Lord, whether we win or whether we lose, may we be able so say that we always did our best with the intent of glorifying the Name above all other names. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Always room for improvement

"I pray that your love will overflow more and more, and that you will keep on growing in knowledge and understanding." Philippians 1:9 NLT

Jeannie Rice Berlin Marathon
In October 2018, 70-year-old Jeannie Rice stunned the running community when she broke 3:30 for the marathon upon crossing the finish line at Chicago in 3:27:50. And if that wasn't impressive enough, on September 29, 2019, at the age of 71, Jeannie broke her own age group world record by crossing the finish line of the Berlin Marathon in 3:24:48. And this amazing athlete who averaged 7:49 per mile to do this has no plans of getting comfortable but said she knows there is room for improvement. "I’m kind of glad I didn’t break 3:20. It gives me something to try for." Wow! How's that for inspiration for us to never give up in our pursuit to become better?

And you know, while you and I should definitely aspire to be better at leading healthier and more productive and active lives, there's one area in every Christians' life that always has room for improvement... and that's in the area of love. You see, Paul knew the more the believers in the church at Philippi loved one another the more united they would be and the more they would "keep on growing in knowledge and understanding" leading Paul to pray that their love for one another would "overflow more and more." In other words, Paul was hopeful that the church wouldn't get comfortable where they were but would constantly, persistently, determinedly, and aggressively be aspiring to show love to one another in bigger and better ways.

So knowing that increased love for our brothers and sisters leads us to a greater understanding of God and an increased discernment of His will, may we all admit to having room for improvement. And then let us, like Paul, pray fervently that our love for one another would "overflow more and more"- never satisfied until we love like Jesus.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the reminder that we should never get comfortable where we are whether it be spiritually or physically but should always be looking for ways to glorify You with our bodies and with the love we show to the fellow believers and to the lost. Help us to love like You love Lord that we might be a light in this dark world. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Make the decision today

"One person dies in prosperity, completely comfortable and secure, the picture of good health, vigorous and fit. Another person dies in bitter poverty, never having tasted the good life." Job 21:23-25

Thomas Stanley
On September 28, Thomas Stanley, 33, was approaching the end of the Flatrock 50k trail race near Independence, Kansas, when he was struck and killed by lightning. In an email, race director Carolyn Robinson described Stanley as an avid runner who was well known in the local racing community. No doubt in prime shape, this young, “vigorous and fit” runner surely could never have imagined his day would end like it did. In fact, it was reported that the race began on a hot and sunny day. Robinson later reported that they got word of the fast-moving storm only moments before it hit.

And you know, as this story shows, being "the picture of good health" is never a guarantee that a person will grow old or even live to see tomorrow. In fact, as Job knew, whether you and I are living "in prosperity" or "in bitter poverty, never having tasted the good life," we all share the same fate... death. And while you and I have no control over freak accidents such as this that might cut our lives short, we all have control over where we will spend eternity by the choice we make to either follow Christ or deny Him. Thankfully Thomas, described as above all.. a man of faith and family... deeply devoted to his wife, Ashley, children Charlotte, Peter and Claire, and his spiritual journey by the Kansas Leadership Center where he worked, had made the decision to follow Jesus Christ long ago and so will most assuredly be spending eternity with Him-the knowledge of which I'm sure brings great peace and comfort to his family.

So if you have yet to make the decision to follow Christ, won't you quit putting it off my friend? After all, it’s quite clear that neither youth nor good health will guarantee anyone will have another day... nothing will guarantee it. But one thing is guaranteed... if you choose to follow Christ, you will spend eternity in Heaven. And isn’t that the best reason to choose to do so today?

Heavenly Father, I pray your peace, love and comfort over the family and friends Thomas left behind, especially for his wife and children Lord. And Lord may his death not have been in vain. May it lead at least one person to seek You and to find You, that they might make the decision to follow You before it's too late. And Lord may Thomas's life inspire every one of us to live life to the fullest each and every day and to always tell those people we love that we love them. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.
