Set good goals

"So we make it our goal to please him, whether we are at home in the body or away from it." 2 Corinthians 5:9 NIV

Like many runners, seasoned and new, you might be making a list of running goals for 2022 today and wondering if they're realistic. An expert on how to set good running goals, Meb Keflezighi, past winner of both the Boston and New York City Marathons, said, "Goals form your road map to success. You won’t get near your potential without having good goals. We’re wired as humans to dream of what might be and then figure out how to make that dream a reality... the best goals have certain elements that make your success more likely. Here’s what I think good goals have in common." He went on to explain that good goals have personal meaning, are specific, are challenging but realistic, have a time element, and keep a person motivated. And to further increase our chances of success, Meb made this suggestion, "Tell a few close people your goals. Doing so makes it easier to keep making the right choices."

But you know, there's one more thing that we need to consider when we decide whether a goal is good and deserving of our time and effort... does the goal and the pursuit of it bring God glory? You see, the Bible says that, first and foremost, we should "make it our goal to please him..." And our goals please Him when they glorify Him. Rick Warren says it this way, "Any goal that causes you to love God more brings glory to God. Any goal you set that causes you to trust God more brings glory to God. Any goal you set that causes to you obey God, to love God, to serve God, any goal that causes you to want to brag on God and tell unbelievers, ‘Look what he did for me’ -- that's the goal that brings glory to God.’”

So when you're making your resolutions for the year, I hope you’ll consider pursuing only those goals that are truly good. Ones that "please him" and inspire others to do the same. Because those are the only ones that truly matter my friend.

Heavenly Father, thank You for your presence in our lives. Help us to align our will with yours Lord that we might only make goals that bring You the glory and honor that You are due. Use us in mighty ways Lord.
It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Stop suffering in silence

“Get all the advice and instruction you can, so you will be wise the rest of your life.” Proverbs 19:20 NLT

In an article published earlier this week by Runners World magazine titled, “Lower Back Pain When Running? Here’s How to Treat It,” the writer said “Stop suffering in silence. Here’s how you can identify and address your lower back pain the next time it bothers you.” They went on to say, “It can be hard to find the exact culprits for your lower back pain, especially if you normally suffer from it. For runners, common causes of lower back pain include improper form, weak muscles, and possibly more severe issues. If you’re experiencing bone- or muscle-related lower back pain when running, there are stretches and exercises you can do to relieve the discomfort you’re feeling.” The takeaway from the article? There’s no need for a runner to suffer from back pain when they can seek sound medical advice that will lead them to the correct treatment and cure for their pain.

And you know, it’s not just runners who suffer in silence from lack of sound advice, many Christians do too. You see, many believers in our world today are experiencing spiritual and emotional pain—pain from past sin, trauma or guilt among other things—pain they keep inside for fear of judgment, ridicule, ostracism, or being misunderstood. But the truth is this... God gave us our brothers and sisters to provide “advice and instruction” to help us deal with and work though our pain. Which is the very reason Solomon advised us to “get all the advice and instruction” we can so that we can gain the wisdom to treat or avoid those things that cause us pain.

So if this has you saying to yourself, “she’s talking about me today,” take heart my friend. You don’t have to suffer in silence, and you shouldn’t. Call up a trusted friend or mentor today who is mature and rooted in the Word and allow them to give you the “advice and instruction” you need to rid yourself of the pain you were never intended to carry. You’ll be so glad you did.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the reminder that there’s no need to suffer in silence when we have co-workers in the faith that can and will give us good, godly advice and instruction. Help us to swallow our pride and to seek these people out when we are hurting Lord that we might be refreshed and restored. It’s in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!!!

BASS PRO MIDWEEK MOTIVATION-Intentionally prepare to crush your resolutions

Hello runner friends!
Welcome back to the Bass Pro Fitness Series
MIDWEEK M😊TIVATI😊N blog!

Now let’s get started by talking about what lots of people are talking about this week... New Years Resolutions or, as defined, firm decisions to do or not to do something. And for runners, these eight firm decisions are some of the most common ones made every year. Let's take look at them and then discuss the two things every runner will need to BE to make these resolutions (or whichever ones you have made) a reality... prepared and intentional. Embracing both of these characteristics is extremely important. After all if we fail to prepare, we prepare to fail right? So now's the time to intentionally start putting things into place to ensure that your resolutions have the greatest chance of becoming a reality. Now’s the time to intentionally prepare to.....

#1: START RUNNING CONSISTENTLY
Let’s be honest, staying consistent with anything for a long period of time is tough, but consistency is what creates improvements and change so keeping to a consistent running schedule is a great resolution for a runner of any skill level. The first step to running more consistently is to find your motivation. Find what drives you and think about that every time you step out for a run. Don’t be defeated if each day your run feels a little different, start slow and just get your body moving! With running consistently comes setting a pace that allows you to stay consistent and one that you can maintain every time you run. Don’t get caught up with how fast you are going, just set a comfortable pace and stick to it. This will help running consistently be more achievable.

#2: EXPLORE NEW PLACES AND/OR RUNNING SURFACES
Speaking of consistency, many runners run the same routes and do the same running workouts time after time. This year, vow to venture out! Go on a trail run or find a unique new workout that will create some variance in your run routine. My friend, Gretchen, and I did a 50k last week doing laps around a high school track for my birthday and had a blast! If that sounds boring, think again. We had so much fun that we will definitely do it again in the future. And if you’re normally a track or treadmill runner, take it to the roads and find some hills to add variance and spice. Try running intervals or go on a tempo run, whatever you need to do to change it up and keep it interesting as well.

#3: GET ACCOUNTABLE
Not being held accountable is one of the biggest reasons that our New Year’s resolutions blunder. Find an accountability partner, app, or other way to hold yourself accountable with your running routine. Having someone or something that is constantly reminding and supporting you will help keep you running on track. With social media, you'll find that it's easier than ever to find groups and other runners to keep you accountable, even if they aren’t physically running with you. Another way to stay accountable without the use of another person is to literally schedule your run into your day whether that be through penciling it in on your agenda or putting it on your phone calendar. Having a dedicated time slot to running will help you prioritize it just as you would any other important meeting or commitment.

#4: RUN FASTER
If you're a skilled runner, make 2022 the year you push your pace! As you might already know, we runners often get comfortable at a pace (guilty!) and float through the motions of running, sometimes for years. But in order to progress, you have to challenge yourself. Try to beat your pace by whatever margin is attainable for you. Some ways to increase your endurance and as a result, your speed is to do different types of workouts like tempo training, interval training, and hill training. And don't forget about fartleks. They're totally underrated for helping gain speed.

#5: RUN FARTHER
Run farther. If you've been running for a while, slowly increase your mileage weekly. A good rule of thumb is the 10% rule. Take the mileage you ran the previous week and increase it no more than 10% each week. This will help you gradually increase your mileage at a reasonable rate.Although this 10% rule is not the best way to increase mileage for every runner, it will help you gauge how to gradually push yourself to go farther. Find your mileage “sweet spot” or the amount of miles where you know you feel comfortable then push past it! No matter what achievable new year’s running resolution you are setting for yourself this year, just make sure to stick with it and keep on running! And when you've finished one distance, think about increasing it again. Perhaps a marathon is in your future? Or even an ultra marathon? That's after the 5k, the 10k and the Half Marathon (in that order) of course.

#6: STRETCH EVERY DAY
Stretching: something most runners would rather skip. Stretching every day can seem a bit excessive but it's a good habit to get into. Stretching not only lengthens our muscles and joints, which helps to prevent running injuries but helps to reduce soreness, especially for the runner who is consistent in their training. Make it a goal to stretch your muscles everyday, your body will thank you!

#7: JOIN A RUN CLUB/GROUP
For many, running is a solo sport (I know that I love my alone time running gives), but running with a run club or group (at least occasionally) will not only keep you consistent and hold you accountable, but will give you an opportunity to build a community and meet people who share the same passion. Running with a group of people will motivate you to never miss a run because well, people will know if you don’t show and they're not above shaming you! It will also push you to become a better runner because running is way more fun with a group and, let's face it, a little friendly competition never hurt anyone. If you're looking for a run club to join, check out these great groups in our area... OMRR (Ozark Mountain Ridge Runners), FFG (Frog Fitness Group), DRC (Daily Run Club), TEAM RWB, and LOZ (Lake of the Ozarks Runners). And this is also something that makes number eight so much easier. You'll not only know what races are in your area and when they are happening (something every run group keeps on top of) but you'll have friends to accompany you.

#8:RUN A NEW RACE (OR YOUR FIRST!)
Ok, so if you're an avid runner like me, races are most likely a common occurrence for you... most likely the same races year after year as well. Which is why 2022 might be a great time to branch out and find a new and unique race. Going back to number seven, you might even consider splitting costs with some of your running friends to do a race you'd never be able to afford on your own. Think about things like destination races, relay events, and obstacles runs. And if you’re new to racing, there’s no better time to start training than the start of the new year! Signing up for a future race will not only motivate you but will help you set a training plan and goal. And if you need help choosing a race and/or training for one, check out the Bass Pro Fitness Series Training group for the Bass Pro Marathon/half. This group can be attended in person or virtually. Join their Facebook page and you'll be a part of the family no matter where you might be training. There are lots of other great races in our area too!! Races like the Rock Island Road Race, Katy 50/50, Dogwood Canyon trail runRun for the Ranch, Honoring our Heroes, Mile O Flint Hills trail race, and the Frog Hill Half. These are just a few of the great races Missouri has to offer and my personal favorites!!

So there you have it friends. Those are some great resolutions to consider adopting if you want to become a better runner in 2020. But remember... now's the time to intentionally start putting things into place to ensure that they have the greatest chance of becoming a reality. Now is the time to intentionally prepare to... you fill in the blank... and then go out there and, in the words of Larry the cable guy, "Get er' done!"

Happy Running and Happy New Year!!!

The last days will be difficult times

"'You should know this, Timothy, that in the last days there will be very difficult times. For people will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred. They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good. They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God. They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. Stay away from people like that!" 2 Timothy 3:1-5 NLT

On December 27 Fox 29 Philadelphia reported that Bennett Brookstein, a well-known runner who started the Fairmont Running Club 18 years ago, was assaulted and stabbed while out running on Christmas Day. Bennett said he could count the number of times he’s run alone in Philly on his two hands. But Saturday morning he showed up for a group run and no one showed up so he took off on his own. A couple of miles in he was brutally attacked on the path near Martin Luther King Drive and Black Rd. He was able to get away from his attacker to some other runners as they waited for police who found and arrested the man responsible. Brookstein will have to take some time off to physically recover. Mentally it will be difficult to run that path again. He hopes people see this and realize the importance of running in groups and that something is done to curb the violence. "If I’m not going to run with a group I’ve got to be in places that are lit up I don’t know what I’m going to carry with me," said Brookstein. "It definitely throws things off when you’re running by yourself." He said although this happened at 8 in the morning he’d like to see the city invest in more lights and patrol on running paths.

And while running in groups and having more lights and patrol on running paths might seem like a simple way to "curb the violence," the Bible is clear that the violence will only increase despite our actions to prevent it. In fact, the warning Paul issued to Timothy about this increase was, "You should know this, Timothy, that in the last days there will be very difficult times." Paul then went onto describe how disobedient, unloving, unforgiving, lacking in self-control and cruel people would become "in the last days," the days that are now upon us and should cause us to be ever more vigilant, watchful and alert to our surroundings. Notice that I didn’t say fearful though? And I didn’t because now’s not the time for the church (that's you and me) to panic, shrink back or to cower down in the face of what’s happening but to courageously and boldly rise up and persuade the lost to turn from darkness to light before it’s too late.

So as we continue to see the reports of violence escalate in the coming days, weeks and months, let us stand undeterred at the threat of danger or pain by keeping our eyes on the One who goes before us and has promised to never leave us or forsake us. Let us be brave and committed to finishing the task of being witnesses to all the ends of the earth.

Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us the Word that clearly defines what will happen in the last days. Please give us an unquenchable desire to know and study Scripture so that we might be ready for what is to come, but not only ready but eagerly expectant so that we would not fall back in fear but rise up in the confidence that we are not alone and so can win every battle. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Praise God daily for your provisions

“You cause the grass to grow for the livestock and plants for man to cultivate, that he may bring forth food from the earth and wine to gladden the heart of man, oil to make his face shine and bread to strengthen man’s heart.” Psalm 104:14,15 ESV

In an article posted by Runner’s World magazine on December 24 titled, “Adequate Vitamin D Levels May Protect Against Heart Disease, Research Finds” it was said that vitamin D has been showcased for bone strength, but it can benefit our cardiovascular systems as well. Which means runners who get sufficient vitamin D are less likely to develop heart disease, according to new research. Other vitamin D benefits include a sunnier mood, stronger bones, and better protection during cold and flu season. They went on to say that, although it’s possible to get Vitamin D from supplements and from food—such as fatty fish, eggs, and fortified products like milk— the researchers noted that dietary options tend to be a relatively poor source of vitamin D compared to getting enough sunshine. Great news right? Especially for those of us who opt for the great outdoors rather than the treadmill. Taking our daily runs outside are good for us in more ways than one.

And do you know what else is good for us? Praising God daily for his provisions. You see, as the psalmist clearly understood, everything is created by God and maintained by Him as well; things nature reveals to us. The psalmist acknowledged this when he said, "You cause the grass to grow for the livestock and plants for man to cultivate, that he may bring forth food from the earth and wine to gladden the heart of man, oil to make his face shine and bread to strengthen man’s heart." Knowing that God gave us sunshine to protect our hearts and bread to strengthen them gives us reason to praise our Provider all the more. He is just so good to us.

So if one of your resolutions for 2022 is to become healthier, make praise and thanksgiving a part of your daily routine. In fact, make it so much a part of your life that it flows out naturally. You'll not only cultivate a "sunnier mood" but will shine the light of Jesus in a world in desperate need of experiencing it.

Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding us that creation serves so many purposes. It not only declares your sovereignty but reveals so many things about your character. Thank You for loving us so much that You would provide for our needs. Cause us to remember that all good things come from You so that we would have a heart of praise. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

We all have reason to praise Jesus

“Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.’” Luke 10:9,10 NIV

As I turned off my alarm at 3:45 am yesterday morning, climbed out of the warm bed I was in and then stumbled to the coffee maker, I had a brief thought. “Is it really worth it Melissa? For real! Is it really worth getting up this early to be ready to run a 51k for your 51st birthday at 5:00 am when you have the day off and could be sleeping in?” And then I laughed out loud. “Of course it’s worth it!” I said to myself. “Running 31.69 miles with friends by doing laps around a track for at least 6-7 hours is an epic way to spend your birthday and is a great opportunity to talk about Jesus and publicly praise Him for the healing He recently provided that has allowed you to run again!” And let me tell you, it was more than worth the effort!

And you know, when it comes to running and praising Jesus, the Bible tells us the story of Zacchaeus, a wealthy tax collector who had great reason to publicly praise Christ as well. You see, Zacchaeus was a man who, upon hearing that Jesus was coming through town, ran ahead of His anticipated arrival and climbed into a Sycamore tree so he could see Jesus over the crowd (since he was a short man). Zacchaeus soon realized that his “run” was more than worth the effort he put into it when Jesus ordered him to come down and said, “I must stay at your house today.” And this is where it gets good... Zacchaeus not only welcomed Jesus into his home but repented of his sin and accepted Jesus as his Savior. Is that an amazing story or what?

So as you and I prepare to celebrate Christmas, I pray that we will remember that the “the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost." He came to save me and He came to save you! Is that amazing or what? But it's not just a story friends! Jesus came in the flesh to bring salvation to all those who were dead in their sin, something that should cause us to praise Him as well.

Heavenly Father, thank You for loving us so much that You would send your only Son in the flesh to walk among us. But not just to walk among us but to die for us. Jesus came so that we might have eternal life. Help us to realize that this story, the Good News, is too amazing to keep to ourselves. Lord, please give us a boldness to share it with others so that the lost might be saved. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!!!

Issue the warning

“‘He answered, ‘Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my family, for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’” Luke 16:27,28

As I was finishing up my run early yesterday morning by doing laps around the cemetery behind the office where I work, I was enjoying the peace and serenity of the tree-lined graveyard. The sun was shining bright, the birds were singing loudly and I was lost in thought as I contemplated the goodness of God and the many things I had to be thankful for this Christmas. That calmness and tranquility was soon interrupted though when I heard the loud whistle of the train coming through on the tracks less than a quarter mile from me, a sound the conductor issued to warn traffic and pedestrians to stay off the tracks to avoid being hit. The blast was so loud in fact that it made me jump. “Yikes,” I thought to myself. “That really scared me.” And just when my heart rate went down, the conductor sounded the horn again. “If I didn’t know a train was coming then I sure do now,” I laughed.

And you know, when it comes to issuing a warning, Jesus told the story of the rich man and Lazarus so that you and I would understand just how horrendous, dreadful and nasty hell is; something that is rarely talked about in most churches these days despite the fact that hell is a place so devoid of hope that the rich man, who went to hell because he had not accepted Jesus as his Savior, begged Abraham to send Lazarus to his family saying, "Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment." And since the definition of “this place of torment" is a place of unending and unrelenting mental and physical suffering so severe that is beyond comprehension, you and I would do well to warn all those who have not accepted Jesus as their Savior that the same fate that the rich man met awaits them as well.

So this Christmas, give the best gift that you could ever give. Give the gift of your time and testimony to someone who has not made the decision to follow Jesus. Simply tell them about the good things God has done in your life and invite them to experience this goodness for themselves... goodness that was made possible by His birth more than 2,000 years ago.

Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding us that hell is a real place, it's a forever place, and it's a place that we don’t want even one person to go to. Give us a heart to deliver this message this Christmas and throughout the year so that the lost aren't met with the same fate as the rich man—a man who chose the temporary comforts of the world over the eternal comfort of heaven. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!!!

BASS PRO MIDWEEK MOTIVATION-Run off those Christmas Cookies

Hello runner friends!
Welcome back to the Bass Pro Fitness Series
MIDWEEK M😊TIVATI😊N blog!

Now let's get started by talking about one of the main reasons runners like to run so much... so they can eat whatever they want! And while we all know that's technically NOT true since no one can outrun a bad diet, runners
CAN eat more than "normal" people without the numbers on the scale rising.... IF they run that is.

So in an effort to avoid looking like Santa this year (after all we want his gifts but not his gut right?) let's look at just how much you and I will have to run to avoid that dreaded holiday weight gain.

But before we do that, consider this. Studies show the average person consumes up to 5,241 calories on their big festive blowout when alcohol and snacks are added. That means they will need to run 52 miles to get rid of the evidence of the traditional festive excesses from December 25. A marathon runner burns 2,600 calories over the 26.2 mile course – around 100 calories per mile. That means you'd have to run two marathons on Christmas to burn off all the food you will consume on Christmas. I don't know about you but I'm not fast enough to get that done and still have the time to open gifts, visit with family, take a nap, and eat all the food that day. So let's take a look at some favorite things people eat on this blessed day and what they will do to your waistline. This will have you asking the question, "Is this item I'm about to eat worth the miles or minutes I'll have to run to burn it off?" If the answer is no, then you can put that fork down and save yourself some time and some steps.

And keep this in mind as well as you go through the list of top Christmas food... what runners consider to be a serving is usually 2-3 servings for "normal" people. We like our food that much.

Now that we have some of the common calorie counts, let's take into consideration once again that on average a 180lb person burns 100 calories per mile running and a 120lb person burns 65 (that's so not fair!). So for an adult weighing 180 pounds it will take about 12 hours of steady paced walking (around four miles an hour) to burn off the calories of an average Christmas dinner. This is the equivalent of walking approximately 50 miles. Or, if you prefer, you could run for about five to six hours. Or even longer depending on how much you eat.

Of course, the number of calories in your dinner will also depend on how you prepare the food and whether you go back for seconds. The amount of physical activity you’ll need to do to burn off your dinner will also depend on many factors such as age, gender and weight.

Okay so if you're that person saying right now, "I really don't care that the average person puts on 4lbs between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day after consuming twice their recommended calorie intake. Nor do I care that researchers say that 'It takes until Easter for many dieters to repair the damage.' I just want to have fun and enjoy the holidays and all the food and drink that goes along with it," I have great news. Run hard the day before and run long the day after (or vice-versa) Christmas and you'll gain a good metabolic boost. This is great news since you might not want to run on Christmas... yes, some runners actually take that day off. I know, I'm shaking my head too right now. I just don't understand it.

And on a side note, striving to avoid weight gain this year makes for a great reason to get away from all the family that might have you going insane and/or stress eating. Simply say, "Listen fam.... I want to keep my sanity and not crush the scale so I'm headed out for a run." I've personally been doing this my whole adult life and I will tell you that it hasn't always kept me from gaining weight, but it has kept me from turning into the Grinch... something my friends and family greatly appreciate.

So there you have it friends... those are some great reasons to keep running over the holiday weekend. And speaking of reasons, I do hope you'll take the time to reflect and ponder the true "reason for the season" we call Christmas. It's about so much more than food, presents, decorations, family and traditions. It's about the birth of our Savior who came to die for our sins so that we might have the priceless gift (a gift even Santa doesn't have the ability to give us) of eternal life.

And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. (Luke 2:8-14 KJV)

Merry Christmas and Happy Running Friends!!

The Truth never changes

"Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!" Isaiah 5:20 KJV

On December 19, florida today issued a news story about a runner who went missing during an ultra marathon in Florida. Titusville police searched the Enchanted Forest Sanctuary on Sunday for a missing runner who was last seen Saturday night at the finish line of the Ancient Oaks 100-Mile Endurance Run. Earl Blewett, 57, was last seen at the finish line at 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Titusville police said in a press release." Pretty crazy right? Earl seemed to have vanished into thin air. Thankfully, though, Titusville police continued to search for him and issued this report yesterday, "A runner who went missing Saturday night during a 100-mile endurance run in the Enchanted Forest Sanctuary has been found this morning — disoriented but alive, Titusville police spokesperson Amy Matthews said."

And you know, being disoriented or confused is something that defines many churches today. I mean you and I don't have to look very hard or very far to see how culture has infiltrated the walls of God's house leading prominent church leaders and Christians of all denominations to compromise the Truth laid out in the Bible by calling "evil good and good evil." You see, rather than standing firm on the core principles laid out in the Word (principles that do not change with time) they have embraced and even promoted worldly beliefs and narratives that are directly contrary to what the Word says, beliefs such as abortion isn't a sin. By doing this, they have "put darkness for light and light for darkness... bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter." Of these churches and people, the prophet Isaiah said, "Woe unto them..." which was a divine pronouncement of judgment from God.

So knowing that we too will be judged harshly for calling "evil good, and good evil," may we strive to not only know what the Word says but to do what the Word says... without the slightest compromise or fear of how the world will treat us for doing so. After all, in the end God will have the final say.

Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding us that we must stand firm on your Truth if we are to avoid calling good evil and evil good as so many in the world are doing right now. Lord, give us a passion to not only study the Word but to act on it without any fear of ridicule, mocking or derision. Give us a heart that speaks Truth no matter the consequences. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!!!

The most monumental transformation

"It will happen in a moment, in the blink of an eye, when the last trumpet is blown. For when the trumpet sounds, those who have died will be raised to live forever. And we who are living will also be transformed." 1 Corinthians 15:52 NLT

For their Feel Good Friday segment aired December 17, WOOD TV 8 out of Grand Rapids, Michigan aired a story titled, "New runner completes year of transformation with 1st marathon finish." This year has been one of transformation for Liz Fanco. A West Michigan mother of eight, she has struggled with her weight for most of her adult life. But this year, thanks to her commitment to her own well-being, and help from a trainer and dietician, she has lost more than 100 pounds and crossed some major milestones. This summer, she finished her first triathlon and ran in the Grand Rapids Half Marathon. Now, she’s completed her first full marathon; doing it in style in New York City. “To complete the marathon itself, to cross that finish line after 11 months of building up to that moment was incredibly monumental,” she said.

And you know, while Liz’s monumental transformation took nearly a year, the Bible tells us about a transformation of epic proportion that "will happen in a moment, in the blink of an eye, when the last trumpet is blown." That means in about one tenth of a second, "those who have died will be raised to live forever. And we who are living will also be transformed." Is that amazing or what? Think about it... in an instant too small to even comprehend, God's eternal plan will come to pass as He gathers all His people (both dead and on the earth) to meet Jesus in the air. In a moment, all those who chose to follow Christ will receive their resurrection bodies. Can you think of any change more monumental than that?

So if you're ready and anxious for the sound of that last trumpet, consider yourself blessed my friend... you know where you'll be spending eternity. But remember that there are thousands of people in our world that have not yet made the decision to follow Christ and will have no more time to choose when Jesus returns. Let us make it our mission then to tell them the Good News.

Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding us that You are coming back soon so that we might be ready for that last trumpet sound and be found helping others to be ready too. Give us a boldness and urgency to share the Good News with the world and to be Your hands and feet so that none should perish as a result of our indifference or indolence. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

We are ambassadors for Christ

"Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God." 2 Corinthians 5:20 ESV

To say I was flattered when Jennie from Midwest Endurance Race Company announced my Ambassadorship via social media to promote their inaugural Mile 0 Flint Hills Trail Race yesterday would be an understatement. "We would like to welcome Melissa Martinez as our 50k Ambassador! I first met her at my very first ultra event a few years ago. She is an inspiration to all she encounters. You can follow her on her blog at thejoyfilledrunner.blogspot.com. Melissa is an ultra runner, running coach, blogger and someone who is passionate about helping others reach their finish line!!! We are honored to have you!" To understand why this was such an honor, consider that the definition of an ambassador is a person who acts as a representative or promoter of a specified activity or entity. Which means that such entity would, after careful consideration, choose the person that they think would best promote, represent, speak for, and act on their behalf. See now why it's quite an honor?

And you know, when it comes to being an ambassador, the Bible tells us that every believer is a representative of Jesus Christ tasked with the ministry of reconciling others to God in the same way that Christ reconciled us to Himself. "Therefore we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us." Which means that we, on behalf of Christ, must implore the lost to be "reconciled to God." Something we do with our lips and with our lives. You see, you and I are called to promote, represent, speak for and act on behalf of the One that we serve--a task that we should take very seriously and a position we should feel honored to hold.

So knowing that we are "ambassadors for Christ," let us live worthy of the prestigious title by speaking and acting in ways that will not only implore the lost to "be reconciled to God" but will bring honor and glory to His Name. This won't be an easy job, I can assure you, since it requires paying utmost attention to the way we walk and talk, but it will be worth it when we see the lost come to know Jesus.

Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding us that we are Your ambassadors everywhere we go. Help us to truly understand what this means so that we might represent You in ways that will lead the lost to the foot of the Cross and bring You glory. Give us the strength, wisdom, discernment and courage to boldly serve You as we are called and to unashamedly witness to those in need of hearing the Good News. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

The things we take for granted

"Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows." James 1:17 NIV

As I turned the corner to head down to the park on my run early yesterday morning, I slowed down to a walk to read the sticker on the back of a truck parked along the way. "Someone else is praying for the things you take for granted," it read. "Oh my," I thought to myself. "Isn't that the truth?" And then I began to meditate on the many things I took for granted... electricity, clean water, a full refrigerator, two amazing children, parents that are still alive, friends that I consider family, a roof over my head, a job that I love, the ability to run, dirt roads to run on, the freedom to worship my Savior, and the list went on and on. "So many people are indeed praying for the things you have Melissa... the things you take for granted" I said silently as I tried in vain to hold back tears. Sadly though, I know I'm not alone. If the definition of taking something or someone for granted is failing to properly appreciate it or them, especially as a result of overfamiliarity, I would bet that the majority of people in the world admit to taking "things" for granted.

And you know, the Bible is very clear that every good and perfect "thing" that you and I possess "is from above" which means when you and I take those things we have for granted, we take God for granted. That's not a very nice thought is it? But think about it.... when you and I fail to thank God for His daily provision we develop an "overfamiliarity" that leads us to not only take those provisions for granted but to develop an entitlement mentality. So how can we avoid taking God's blessings for granted? By taking some time before we start each and every day to thank God for all that He has given us. Then throughout our day, pausing to remember all of God's blessings. You see, when we thank God for what He has given us and look back on all that He has done, we can't help but stay focused on His goodness and grace.

So let us be ever-mindful to remember that every "good and perfect gift" is an undeserved blessing that we should never take for granted my friends. Something we can only do when we keep praise and gratitude on our lips and thanksgiving in our hearts.

Heavenly Father, thank You for loving us when we didn't love you and for granting us so many blessings that we don't deserve. Lord help us to understand just how good and generous You are so that we would not ever take the gifts you give us for granted. Help us to be thankful for even the smallest of things so that we wouldn't fail to be thankful for the big things as well. Help us to live a life of perpetual praise and thanksgiving. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

BASS PRO MIDWEEK MOTIVATION-Weird things runners do

Hello runner friends!
Welcome back to the Bass Pro Fitness Series
MIDWEEK M😊TIVATI😊N blog!

Now let's get started by talking about something that I hope will have you laughing. Why? Because, if you're like most people right now, you probably need a good laugh amidst the craziness of this changing world and the pressures of making this Christmas the best it can be. So let’s talk about some of the strange things that only runners do (like run races every December in a Santa suit) and what free, or super-cheap and unusual Christmas presents you might get them this year. Tis the season for giving right? So here we go with the top ten list of.....

Weird Things Runners Do… That Normal Humans Don’t (and things we can give them without spending more than $10)

1. Save every bib from every race. Literally. Why? No one knows. But if you have a runner in your life that does this, you might want to give them one of your old running shoe boxes to put them in. Okay, so if that isn't festive since it's obviously free, make them a race bib folder using a hard plastic binder and clear plastic sheet protectors. And of course you'll want to display their Bass Pro Fitness Series ones in the front right?

2. Hoard tech wear. Runners love free stuff and actually think their race shirt or hoodie was free with their entry. Hello... the price was high because your active wear was included in your fee. But I digress... this is the reason so many of us end up needing a separate dresser just for our race gear that we can’t part with. So here we go... time for a bigger box. Think about the one you got that once contained the new TV you purchased to watch Chariots of Fire and Forrest Gump. Yep give them this box for their massive active wear collection. But if you want to be nice and up the ante, think about clear plastic tubs that they can use to store and stack. And while this might cause them to hoard the items even more, that's a discussion for a New Year's Resolution.

3. Hoard worn-through shoes. There’s something about running shoes. You know they’re worn through and you won’t ever wear them again because you know you’d be risking injury. But you can’t seem to let go. And so they sit in the closet and serve no purpose other than to look like they should be worn again. Maybe to mow the lawn in. RIP shoes. Christmas gift? An even bigger box! Consider giving that special runner in your life the box that new refrigerator you purchased came in... you know the one you bought to hold all of your prepped meals and boiled eggs? Seriously though, this is a great time to go through them and donate them to organizations that can get them on the feet of people who would consider themselves blessed to receive them.

4. Wear trash bags before or during a race. Or we go to Target or Wal-Mart and search clearance racks for anything warm and less than $5. Goodwill, too. Sometimes even our spouse’s closet for a nasty old sweatshirt from grade school. This one is simple... give the runner in your life colored trash bags. Yes they make them and they will make the recipient feel super special that you went through the trouble to help them stand out in a crowd.

 5. Wake up at crazy times. Runners will wake up at what others consider the middle of the night in order to get in their long run before work. It is not unheard of to wake up at 3:00 in the morning to get to a race, beat the heat, or simply “get it done.” For this runner in your life? They just need your support. Face it, if they're disciplined enough to get up that early, they can fend for themselves and probably don't need anything besides therapy.

6. Hoard mileage stickers. While normal people have little stick family pictures or political candidates on their bumpers, runners have little signs that say RUN, 50, 26.2 or 13.1! It’s another sign of that special club they belong to. And while they may not need any more stickers, get them a few anyway. You can order them online or pick some up this November at the 2022 Bass Pro Marathon/Dogwood Canyon expo. Speaking of that, this is a great time to gift that special runner in your life with an early bird discounted entry to the race of their choice. Nothing says "tis the season" like a race entry.

7. Monitor their urine. Three words... big water bottle. Or to save money for your next entry fee, give that special runner in your life a gallon of water and write the words (with a permanent marker because you spare no expense) "REUSABLE....FILL AGAIN WHEN EMPTY." Runners like their urine to be a pale yellow which requires a lot of hydration and this will not only give them a jump start but remind them to start the process all over when the jug is dry.

8. Consider toenail loss something to be proud of. Because it indicates how hard we train and what we give up for our sport. This also includes blisters and callouses, and, of course, black toenails. Here we go with the box thing again. This is entirely too easy right?? Simply give them the box from the protein bars you just finished off for them to store their lost toenails in. For an added bonus to show you care, add a red bow. For real... there's nothing more to say on this one.

 9. Love and hoard snacks!!
Runners love to stash them everywhere right? Ziplocs this time!! Cheap and easy right? Does this not just scream, "I love you and I care about you??" Consider that runners are constantly on the run and you might want to throw in a small lunchbox and some healthy snacks that they can eat on the go as well for when they don't have time to pack their own. They'll thank you for it.

10. Runners love talking about running! This one is the best gift ever... make yourself available. Not to get sappy but giving the gift of friendship at Christmas is priceless. This is a time when normally happy people might be depressed. It's the happiest season of all for sure but not always for all. So stay in touch with your friends and even your neighbors, make time for some group and one-on-one runs and remind the people you love that you love them and that you're there for them. Give the gift of your time and you'll reap the rewards for years to come.

So there you have it friends. Further proof that runners are a very strange group of individuals. But as strange as we are, I'm sure you'll agree with me that runners are the funnest and most giving group of people you'll ever meet. So give of yourself this Christmas season. Enjoy the people in your life more than the presents. After all, that's what's most important.

Do it all for the glory of God

"So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God." 1 Corinthians 10:31 NIV

In a story titled, "2021 Rock ‘n’ Roll running series draws over 18,000 people to downtown San Antonio," published recently, the writer said each runner had a reason for their race on Sunday, which especially holds true for runner Neil Bendesky. “I have never run an event like this before. I mean I couldn’t even go around the block in 2015, so now, six years later, I’ve gotten better. I’ve overcome that heart attack -- I’ve done 14 half marathons,” said Bendesky. Three Mexican runners finished at the top of the half marathon. “I feel very happy to be here in San Antonio. Very hilly course, but this is a test for us in preparation for the Houston Marathon in like six weeks,” said J.A.E. Perez. Runner Alex Danels finished first in Saturday’s 5k. He says taking the victory is a blessing after he suffered a collapsed lung just last year. “I had to spend about three weeks in the hospital and it was then I decided I’m going to come back home to shut it down for a little bit, try to recover, and out of nowhere running seemed to come back to me. I gradually got back in shape and here I am winning the Rock and Roll 5k,” said Danels.

And you know, as this story shows, there are a variety of reasons that people choose to participate in races. I know I've personally heard lots of inspiring stories in my many years of running describing runners' motives for stepping up to the start line.  And while we, as Christian runners, might also have different reasons why we run distances from the 5k to the marathon, our main reason for doing anything should be "for the glory of God." You see, as Paul clearly stated, "whatever" you and I do should be done to bring honor to His Name. That means living for Him each and every day, laying aside our wants for the good of others, and doing all things without compromise with the intent of winning people to the gospel.

So in a world where we are commended for winning and doing whatever it takes to come in first, let us be set apart as people who define success as serving Jesus Christ obediently and to the best of our ability. Let us "do it all for the glory of God."

Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding us that nothing apart from what we do for You in this world will last. Lord help us to be Kingdom-minded and fixated on bringing You glory rather than ourselves. Help us to follow the example of Paul who did everything for the glory of God. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

You are of great value

"What is the price of two sparrows—one copper coin? But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it. And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows." Matthew 10:29-31

In a story published by BBC News Friday titled, “Jersey runner completes 100-mile challenge in memory of step dad," it was reported that runner Steph Henwood-Darts, who won the Jersey Marathon earlier this year, ran 4.2 miles (6.8 km) every hour for 24 hours. She raised money for The Shelter Trust, who helped her step father, Pete Ollivier, when he was homeless, and Jersey Hospice Care, who cared for him when he had cancer. Ms Henwood-Darts said Mr Ollivier, who died in October, was a "great man". She started the challenge at 10:00 GMT on Friday, doing loops of the running track at Les Quennevais. Ms Henwood-Darts, who was three years old when Mr Ollivier became her step father, said: "My memories of him in my younger years are of fun and laughter, lots of football, holidays and being carried up to bed every night by this great man.

And you know, when it comes to memories of our dads, many of us would admit that the recollections are depressing, disheartening, painful or even nonexistent for those whose fathers abandoned them. This is something that, no doubt, might have greatly affected your self esteem and the way you view yourself. But the truth of your worth is this... your Heavenly Father knows everything about you but loves you anyway. So much so that He not only numbered the individual hairs on your head but sent His one and only Son to deliver the message that “you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows.” Do you get that? No matter what value your earthly father placed on you, your Heavenly Father declared you worthy of the ultimate sacrifice. He loves you that much!

So let me ask you something today. When you look in the mirror what do you see? If it’s a person of little or no worth, look again and remember this my friend... you are more valuable to your Heavenly Father than a whole flock of sparrows. Does that make you smile or what?

Heavenly Father, we love You and we thank You for being a perfect Father who knows everything about us but loves us anyway. Thank you for seeing us as worthy of your unfailing love and ultimate sacrifice despite our sins and our shortcomings. Please remind us of our value in your eyes, especially when the enemy calls us worthless or brings up memories that might be painful. Remind us that we are loved Jesus and help us to walk as children of the King. It’s in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Take it one day at a time

"Give us this day our daily bread." Matthew 6:11 NKJV

On Tuesday, CBSN DFW published a story about 74-year-old Texas resident Annabelle Corby who is set to run the Dallas Half Marathon this weekend, 50 years after winning the full marathon. Impressive huh? Of the first 26.2 mile Texas race, Annabelle said, “I ran the first White Rock marathon, now the Dallas Marathon, in 1971. I was the first woman finisher, and I was actually the only woman finisher that year.” Since that first marathon, she’s run 23. Her last 26.2 mile race was the Boston Marathon in 2005. Now, Corboy mostly sticks to half marathons. That’s what she plans to run this Sunday at the 50th anniversary race of the Dallas Marathon. She’s most looking forward to the support from the crowd. “I of course fade off into thinking about how much further I have to go and so forth, but I try to bring myself back to paying more attention to the moment and how lucky I am to be there,” said Corboy. Her take on running is similar to the way she views life. “My philosophy is pretty shallow,” she said. “Live one day at a time, I guess you could sum it up.”

And you know, when it comes to living one day at a time, Jesus told us, among other things, to pray only for the provisions we need for one day, "this day.” Why? Because He loves us and wants us to humbly and faithfully depend on Him rather than ourselves for our needs to be met each and every day—something that happens only when we acknowledge that everything comes from Him and is given in His perfect timing. This daily fellowship and dependence then allows us to live contentedly today without worrying about tomorrow, the next day, or the next... fully confident that He will provide tomorrow’s provisions just as He has today’s.

So while you and I should most definitely work hard and save for the future, we should pray each and every morning for Jesus to "give us this day our daily bread" and then thank Him each and every night for the “bread” that He provided to get us through "this day." After all, every good thing comes from God... something that should never go unnoticed, unappreciated, or unthanked.

Heavenly Father, thank You for promising to provide everything we need for each day. Help us to trust You in that promise so that we would not worry or fret about the future. Lord, forgive us for the many times we failed to thank You and stir our hearts to be grateful for the many blessings You provide each and every day. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.
