Consider them carefully

"There is one who speaks rashly like the thrusts of a sword, But the tongue of the wise brings healing." Proverbs 12:18

istockphoto.com

Immediately upon crossing the finish line of Sunday's Mansfield Park Marathon, Elizabeth Bennett, 26, began voicing her complaints. "Come on!" she said loudly to those around her as she checked her smartwatch. "Twenty-six point seven?" She then quickly shared the GPS data of her run on Facebook and posted, "LONG!! I will never run this garbage race again. They can't even get the distance right!" Hmmm... maybe she should have checked her GPS data before going on a public rant? Her route appears to show her deviating from the course to, among other things, take advantage of a swing set, greet a friendly dog, hug her friends, and double back at one point to retrieve a hat she'd dropped (which added the extra mileage). That's one runner who should have given more thought to her words, don't you think?

And when it comes to speaking without careful consideration of the possible consequences or ramifications of our words, the Bible tells us that words that are spoken rashly are "like the thrusts of a sword.” In other words, they can cause great injury to another person’s feelings or, as in this case, an organization's reputation. But on the contrary, "the tongue of the wise brings healing." Can you imagine how different the outcome would have been had Bennett wisely and graciously inquired why the course went long and then waited for the answer before speaking? She most assuredly would not be having to eat her words today.

So may you and I be careful and considerate before choosing our words-ever mindful of the power they have. And may we then choose them so wisely and calculatingly that we never have to go back and apologize for being “one who speaks rashly".

Heavenly Father, thank you for your Word that clearly tells us that there is power in our words. May we, as Christians, avoid speaking rashly to others or about others so that we would be set apart and be an example to others of what it means to show kindness, consideration and compassion at all times. Even when, and especially when, we feel slighted or wronged.

Give it back

"He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us." 2 Corinthians 1:4 NLT

When Josh LaJauine, 39, appeared on the December 2016 cover of Runner's World and revealed that he had lost 230 lbs through running and a plant-based diet, he could never have imagined how his life would touch so many others struggling with the same issues he faced. So in an effort to help them, Josh set up a private Facebook group called the "Missing Chins Run Club" where everyone could safely share their stories and struggles and motivate one another to get active and lose weight. The group now has 52 members and have dropped, in total, more than 4,000 lbs. Of the page, John said, “It’s a beautiful thing to be able to give these men an avenue to health and happiness. They’re all my brothers in this thing. Let’s hone it, let’s refine it, let’s be contagious with it and let’s help others overcome this thing that we fought with all of our life."

You know, when it comes to comforting and helping others through their struggles, it's much easier when we have gone through the same struggles ourselves, don't you agree? Paul certainly did when he wrote, "He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us." You see every battle that we endure and overcome gives us the wisdom and compassion we need to understand what others are going through. And it's through the support, reassurance and comfort that we, ourselves, received during our time of trouble that makes us able to offer that same support to others in their time of trouble.

So, in the words of LaJuine, "Let's hone it, let's refine it, let's be contagious with it and let's help others overcome.." Let's look for ways to use what we have learned through our trials and difficulties to spur others on to prevail and overcome too.

Heavenly Father, thank you for your Word that tells us that all things are possible with You. Help us to look for ways to use our experiences to help others overcome difficulties and troubles in their lives. May we be the "comfort" that so many people in this world need and, by our actions, lead them to You. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!!!

Make the most of it

"Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil." Ephesians 5:15,16

This past May, Mark Thornberry, a 57-year-old ultrarunner, was diagnosed with a terminal form of liver cancer that forced him to cancel his plans to run the 145-mile Grand Union Canal Race. He said his prognosis and the inability to complete the run frustrated him until he found a way to turn his frustration into something good. He would raise money and run the 145 miles (in three days) instead at King's College Hospital, where he receives treatment, saying, "Liver cancer is underfunded when you compare it to some other cancers, like breast and lung. I decided that with whatever time I have left, I could do something positive.” And amazingly enough, Thornberry finished that race in early September and, to date, has raised over $90,000 for research.

You know, immediately after hearing the news, Mark said he had two choices, "I could sit around and moan about it, or I could do something positive." And by choosing the latter and making the most of his time, Mark’s actions will have an impact for generations to come. No matter what you and I may be facing today, we have two choices as well, don't we? We can complain or cry about our situation or, as the Bible commands us, make the "most of every opportunity" and use our set of circumstances to help others and to bring God glory. Either way the time will pass and we will have either made the "most" of it or not.

So knowing that we are not guaranteed tomorrow, what will you do with today? Will you make "the most of every opportunity" to make a difference in this world? Or will you simply let the next 86,400 seconds pass by and do nothing? The choice is yours.

Heavenly Father, thank you for the knowledge that physical death is not the end of life but the beginning of an eternal one. But while we are here, help us to grasp how fleeting and unpredictable life is so we would be emboldened to not waste even one moment of it. And may we make the most of every opportunity we are given, whether by trial or triumph, to help others and glorify your Name. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!!!

Make it a priority

"But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you." Matthew 6:33 ESV

Image result for bible reading morning pic

Sarah Bishop, 35, was the first female to cross the finish line of the Marine Corps Marathon on Sunday with a time of 2:45:07 prompting the headline, Marathon-Winning Mom of Four Busts the “No Time” Myth. Sarah is indeed a woman with little time to spare. Not only is she a full-time wife and Mother to four children (7, 5, and twins who turn 4 next week), she works a demanding full-time job while logging 80-mile weeks. And while she admits that fitting in her workouts can be challenging, she said, "You make time for what’s really important to you. And if you really want to get something done, you find a way. When I started prioritizing running and making time for me, I found a way to fit it in."

You know, she's right. You and I will always find ways to "fit in" those things that we consider important. But there's one thing that we should never try to "fit in" and that's spending time with the Father. It should be a priority above all else and something not to be rushed through. In fact, the Bible is very clear that we should "seek first the Kingdom of God", not when we can fit it into our busy schedules. It's when we do that, that all the other "things will be added" and put into their correct place of priority... God first, everything else second.

So if you’re not seeking Him first today, what or who have you allowed to become more important? Determining that and then putting those things in the correct priority, after God, will be the best start to your day my friend... and to all those to come.

Heavenly Father, what a blessing it is to meet with you first thing every morning. You are so loving and gracious to reveal yourself to us if we would only seek you. Oh Lord, give us an unquenchable thirst for your Word that reading it and spending time with you would be our greatest priority. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Toss the negative thinking

"And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise." Philippians 4:8

Related image

Did you know that 40 million adults in the U.S. suffer from some sort of anxiety disorder? Including many Christians? And if chronic negative thinking is to blame for a majority of it, why are so many people stuck in this hurtful pattern? Could it be that it requires a lot of intentional work to change? RP Jess, a runner, said this, "Negative thinking can determine the outcome of your race–no matter how fit you are. To change my thought process, I had to intentionally work on training my brain in the same way I intentionally executed my running workouts. Change didn’t happen overnight; in fact, years later I continue to work on changing my thoughts when I find myself spiraling into a whirlwind of negativity."

And you know, negative thinking can do more than just ruin a race, it can ruin your life. Negative thinking has the power to cause anxiety, depression, unbelief and dread. Paul knew that more than anyone having gone through imprisonment, shipwrecks, persecution and numerous trials. And yet he managed to remain joyful through it all. His secret? To take any negative thoughts he had and immediately replace them with ones that were "excellent and worthy of praise." In fact, he specifically tells us to do that very thing as well by directing our minds unwaveringly to thoughts that are "true, honorable and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable."

So you see, as Paul knew, we might not be able to change our circumstances but we can always change the way we view them by the way we think. And while you and I will have to intentionally work on training our minds to get in the habit of positive thinking, it will most certainly be worth the effort. Don't you agree?

Heavenly Father, thank you for giving us the power to recognize harmful thoughts and to replace them with those that will empower, motivate and bring us peace. Help us to intentionally train our minds in the same way we do our bodies that we might be healthy both spiritually, mentally and physically knowing it will allow us to serve you better. Its' in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Proper boasting

"As the Scriptures say, “If you want to boast, boast only about the LORD.” When people commend themselves, it doesn’t count for much. The important thing is for the Lord to commend them." 2 Corinthians 10:17,18

Image result for runner pointing to sky pic

Eyob Ghebrehiwet Faniel became the first Italian man to win the Venice Marathon in 22 years Sunday after the lead pack of East African runners were led off course by the lead motorcycle at the 25k mark, costing them an estimated two minutes. After his win, Faniel said this, "Today's race shows that the work is paying off. It was not an easy race as I had to run alone on the Ponte della Libertà. I dedicate the win to myself as I have always believed in my work despite all the difficulties." That's quite a boast about himself isn't it? Especially considering that he would not have won had the error not occurred.

But bragging about one's accomplishments and attributing the victory to ourselves is nothing new is it? Some of the Corinthians were guilty of it too which is why Paul warned them, "If you want to boast, boast only about the Lord" and reminded them that praising themselves to gain recognition from men didn't "count for much.” “The important thing", Paul stressed, was to seek and receive the praise of God instead. You see, when we don't give God the credit, we become dangerously prideful. And pride has been the downfall of many good Christians. And that's nothing new either is it?

So, today, may you and I seek no greater honor than just to know Him more and to count our gains but losses to the glory of the Lord. In every victory, may we boastfully say, "my source of strength, my source of hope is Christ alone."

Heavenly Father, thank you for the many things and accomplishments you have blessed us with. Help us to remember that all we have, all we are and everything that we will ever achieve is because of your grace in our lives. May you receive all the glory. It’s in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Godly training

"Do not waste time arguing over godless ideas and old wives' tales. Instead, train yourself to be godly." 1 Timothy 4:7

Image result for person reading bible pic

At the Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii, Saturday, Germany's Patrick Lange broke the course record when he finished the 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike and 26.2-mile marathon in eight hours, one minute and 40 seconds. Not only does this make him the 2017 Ironman World Champion but the fastest person to ever hold the title. And while those watching the event might have marveled at Patrick's speed, most of the spectators probably didn’t realize that his efforts were the culmination of hundreds of hours, months, or even years, of hard training. You see, as every endurance athlete knows, the hardest work is done before stepping up to the start line and always necessitates taking the proper time to train.

Paul certainly knew the value of time too, which is why he urged Timothy not to waste any of it by "arguing over" things that didn't really matter but to, instead, use his time to train himself "to be godly." And just how does a person "train" to do this? By making time each day to meet with God through prayer and the careful reading of his Word-and then putting into practice those things God reveals. You see, each time we train this way, we become more “godly” and strengthen our spiritual muscle.

So may you and I train "to be godly" in the same way an elite athlete trains to be first to the finish line-by being continually and persistently focused on the prize and allowing the pursuit of it to literally consume our hearts, minds and lives above all else. Because that, my friend, is what it takes to run the race and finish strong.

Heavenly Father, thank you for your Word that gives us everything we need to be spiritually trained. Help us to see the value that training to be godly has above anything else that we could ever pursue in this lifetime. May we make the best use of the time we have to become more like You. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Able to forgive

"Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?" 1 Corinthians 3:16

Joined by some friends, running coach Gilbert Tuhaboyne celebrated a special birthday Saturday by marching a mile to the Capitol while toting a five-gallon jug of water on his head to raise money to provide clean drinking water to the people of his native Burundi. But you see, this birthday was not special because it marked the day he came into the world but the day he was given a second chance to live. The day on October 21, 1993, when he was the only one to survive a horrific attack (prompted by the Civil War that was raging) in Burundi in which 100 of his schoolmates and teachers were killed. And despite  still bearing the scars of that day on his legs, back and arms, he says he’s “been able to forgive the people who tried to kill him.”

Can you imagine forgiving someone who kidnapped and tortured you and your friends before leaving you to die in a fire? Most of us can't. In fact, most of us would admit to being unable to forgive people for far less egregious acts. But because Christ forgave us, that's exactly what we are called to do for others, no matter how big or small the offense was. And if you think you can't do it, think again.  What you and I are powerless to do on our own, we can do through Him. You see, the Bible tells us that we we have the strength to forgive because  "God's spirit dwells in you" and me and it's by this power working in us that we can stop feeling angry or resentful toward someone for an offense, flaw, or mistake-no matter how much they hurt us.

So if there's someone that you need to forgive today but still find yourself unwilling, consider the words of C.S Lewis, "To be a Christian means to forgive the inexcusable, because God has forgiven the inexcusable in you." And then, by His strength, let it go.

Heavenly Father, thank you for giving us the strength to forgive those who have wronged us knowing that you have forgiven us in the same way. Give us the ability today Lord to let go of  any unforgiveness we are harboring and to love others as you have called us to. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Different

"Instead, clothe yourself with the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ. And don't let yourself think about ways to indulge your evil desires." Romans 13:14

With so many people running races these days, it seems many of the more dedicated runners are searching for new ways to attract attention and keep their runs fun and interesting. And in their effort to do so, many runners are doing things like running a marathon while dribbling a basketball, running a marathon while tied to 112 of their friends, running a marathon in high heel shoes, running a marathon up Mount Everest and running a marathon while juggling. I'd say these are all very "different" ways to complete 26.2 miles. Wouldn't you agree?

And when it comes to being unconventional or unusual, we, as Christians, should be so “different” from the world that it should be completely obvious. In fact, the Bible tells us that we are to put on "the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ" and avoid any thought of sin and any situation that might cause us to sin. This means you and I should be behaving like Jesus by thinking differently, acting differently and relating to others differently-hating sin and loving others the way He did. In other words, we shouldn't have to be running in high heels or up Mount Everest for people to know that we are "different".

So today, if you claim to be a follower of Jesus Christ, but are living and looking like everyone else in the world, then you may be in desperate need of a spiritual check-up. You may just need to ask yourself, “Why am I not different?”

Heavenly Father, thank you for your Word that clearly tells us that we are to be set apart from the world. Give us discernment to see how we might be compromising our values or beliefs in any way to "fit in" and then the strength to stand alone and be different. May we be so different and so like Jesus, that others would be drawn to You because of it. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Never too late

"But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God." John 1:12

Image result for new runner pic

With autumn finally here, runners everywhere are preparing for the start of the fall racing season. Perhaps you're one of them, busy racking up miles in anticipation of your next race? Or maybe you’re one of those runners that let the heat or busyness of summer slow down your training or maybe stop it altogether and now you're looking to get back to where you were? The good news is that it's easy to get back on track and never too late to return to the sport. Four-time Boston Marathon winner, Bill Rodgers, gives these tips to get up and running again... start slow, give yourself time to build muscle, try the run-walk method and be sure to take rest days.

And you know, getting back on track in our exercise routines is not the only thing that’s easy and worth doing, so is renewing a relationship with Christ. For one reason or another today, many Christians have let sin or the busyness of this world diminish or temper the closeness they once had with Jesus and they need to get back to where they were. Most Christians, in fact, can attest to feeling this way from time to time. But thankfully, getting back into fellowship with the Father can be as easy as remembering that we are his "children" and having a heart-to-heart talk with Him-confessing our sin and asking for forgiveness.

So no matter what might have caused the separation between you and Jesus, isn't it great to know that it's never too late to mend it? And unlike with running, you don't have to start off slow. You can run as fast as you can into his arms and rekindle the relationship today. In fact, I’d recommend it.

Heavenly Father, thank you for your Word that reminds us that, as believers, we are your children and that we can always come home no matter how far we have strayed. Help us to remember that no sin, shame or guilt is so big that you can't remove and that you are waiting for us to return. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

We will be hated

"And you will be hated by everyone because of My name. But the one who endures to the end will be delivered." Mark 13:13 HCSB

Image result for serious runner pic

In an article titled, "Why Are Runners Hated?", Allie Burdick explored some of the reasons many people just don't like runners-including that any reference to "a jogger" is usually followed by something unpleasant "like found a body" or "shoved a woman into an oncoming train". And inconveniencing anyone for merely six hours once a year by blocking their driveway or a street for race day is most surely the way us runners gain enemies. And let's not even talk about the people who loathe us for posting our times, running memes and the results of our splits. But, hey. You can't please everybody right?

You know, when it comes to being disliked, the Bible is very clear that, as followers of Jesus Christ, you and I will be despised by people who don't share the same love for Him. In fact, Jesus says it in no uncertain terms, "And you will be hated by everyone because of My name." But he also gives us the promise that "the one who endures to the end will be delivered." In other words, you and I should expect to face severe trials and mocking for believing in the only Name that saves. But, when we press on to the finish line in spite of it, you and I can claim the prize of salvation.

So remember, while we certainly can't please everyone and shouldn't even try, there's only One that we should be looking to for approval. May we today, and every day, live for Christ and Christ alone no matter who hates us for it.

Heavenly Father, thank you for sending your one and only Son to die on the cross for our salvation. May we never back down or compromise from our belief that He is the way and the truth and the life and the only way to eternal life. May we be bold in the midst of persecution and stand firm when we are hated. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Pray instead

"I prayed to the LORD, and he answered me. He freed me from all my fears." Psalm 34:4 ESV

Image result for pray for california pic

As you can imagine, the devastating wildfires in California have wreaked havoc for races, runners and their families. Runners World recently reported that "coping with the tragic blazes has taken priority for many athletes who have roots in the area." Which is why Devon Yanko, an ultrarunner who owns a bakery in Marin County, California is doing what she can to help. After she couldn't get her bread delivered to the Whole Foods in Santa Rosa because of the fires, she donated it to businesses feeding the firefighters and first responders and then urged others to help in any way they could too saying, "I just feel so much for all those affected, my heart hurts with all the destruction, I fear for what is still to come."

You know, with so many crazy things happening around us today like wars, protests, terrorism, divisions and natural disasters, it seems that the majority of people fear what today holds and what is still to come. After all, no one has control over these things right? But we, as Christians, have no need to fear those things we can't control because we can place our trust in the One who does have control. The psalmist knew that when he wrote, "I prayed to the Lord, and he answered me. He freed me from all my fears." Did you notice that David did not say he was freed from the situation causing his fear but he was freed from his fear over the situation? Oh what hope that brings to us!

So if you find yourself in fear over what's happening around you or what is still to come, won't you do as David did and pray? And then ponder the words of Charles Spurgeon,"Will He allow your present troubles to destroy you when so many others have not been able to hurt even a hair of your head? Trust in His love and dismiss your fears!"

Heavenly Father, thank you for your Word that tells us that you can rid us of all our fears if we would only trust in your promises. Help us to pray when we feel anxious or scared and allow you to remind us that you were, are and always will be in control no matter how it looks through our eyes. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Our best years

"But you know that Timothy has proved himself, because as a son with his father he has served with me in the work of the gospel." Philippians 2:22

Image result for serving others pic

As a person who once considered herself to be pretty fashionable, I was disheartened to hear my kids tell me that I was most definitely not up to date on styles and the jacket I was eyeing looked like something their Grandma would wear. Standing in the department store, the lady browsing the same rack said, "It's okay, my kids tell me the same thing." As we laughed and talked some more, we realized that we were the same age and agreed that the years had surely flown by since the days we had been fashionable. Noticing that the thought appeared to make her glum, I listened as she asked, "Does it make you sad that our best years are behind us?" "Oh honey," I said, "they're not. You just need to rediscover your purpose." I then shared how God was using me and could do the same for her... at any age.

And you know, the life of Timothy is one of the greatest examples of how God can use a person throughout a lifetime. The Bible tells us that Timothy learned about the scriptures when he was a young child and was believed to be in his early thirties when he was ordained to serve by Paul. Timothy then accompanied Paul on many of his missionary journeys, ministered in at least five New Testament churches and coauthored several books of the Bible before being martyred at the age of 80. He was so intent on serving Christ that Paul wrote, "Timothy has proved himself because.. he has served with me in the work of the gospel."

So you see, if you and I are serving Christ, our "best years" are never behind us. Our service to the Lord might change as we age but our labor is no less important or fulfilling. And living for the purpose of doing "the work of the gospel" is the only way to ensure that you and I will have made the "best" of our "years." Don't you agree?

Heavenly Father, thank you for your Word that gives us so many examples of how a life filled with the purpose of doing the work of the gospel can have eternal consequences in the lives of others. Help us to realize that, while the way we serve may change, our purpose never does. May we live our whole lives devoted to the cause of sharing Jesus Christ with the world. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

A new heart

"I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh." Ezekiel 36:26

Image result for new heart pic

Against all odds Sunday, Shae Brown crossed the finish line of the Chicago Marathon holding hands with Fred Miller, 62, the father of the organ donor who made the moment possible. You see, Brown, now 49, was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 16 and underwent treatment that irreparably damaged her heart. By her mid-30s, Shae needed a pacemaker and by the age of 43, she needed a heart transplant. By God's grace, she received that new heart in 2013 from Fred's daughter, Alyssa (who died at the age of 24), and will be forever grateful for it.

You know, many people today have damaged hearts-hearts diseased from sin, hardened to the point of being like stone-and are in need of a heart transplant as well. Because of past hurts, iniquities and rebellion, many peoples hearts have become so calloused that it's become impossible for them to repent or to love Christ as they should. But thankfully no one has to stay that way. God has the power to transplant any heart, including "your heart of stone" and replace it with "a heart of flesh."

And even more thankfully, all a person needs to do to receive this spiritual life-saving-and-life-changing new organ is to humble themselves before God, ask for his help and then believe that He has the power to change even the coldest heart that would seek Him.

Heavenly Father, thank you for loving us so much that you don't punish us as we deserve but offer forgiveness instead to those who would choose to follow You and receive a new heart. May those whose hearts may have grown hard choose to submit to you today and receive a new heart that will change the course of their lives. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

The final last time

"For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do--this I keep on doing." Romans 7:19

Image result for break chains pic

Exactly two years ago yesterday, one of my dearest friends crossed the finish line of his first IRONMAN triathlon. As his wife and I watched from the sidelines that day, it was clear that this was one punishing competition. After swimming 2.4 miles in open water, my friend biked 112 miles and then ran a full marathon (26.2 miles) before earning his official "IRONMAN" title. When asked if he would ever do it again, his response was an adamant "No!" But guess what? He did do it again eighteen months later vowing, once again, that it would be the last time. We will see about that.

You know, the Apostle Paul knew all about doing things he vowed he never would again too, saying that he continued "on doing" the evil things he didn't want to do instead of the "good" things he did want to do. And he also knew that he was was powerless to change this cycle of sin on his own-as any Christian struggling with habitual sin can attest to. In the battle to overcome "evil", human willpower is simply not enough. It's only by God's power at work within us that we can break the chains and claim victory.

So if you find yourself struggling with the same sin day after day and repeatedly doing those things you vow to stop, won't you call upon the Lord?  And then lean on His power to overcome and conquer those things, like Paul, that you "do not want to do."

Heavenly Father, we thank you for your Word that clearly tells us that, through you, we have the power to break the cycle of sin. Help us to identify those areas in our life where we might be struggling with temptation and then call upon you to cleanse of us them. Help us to be free to do the good that we want to do. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Spread the Message

"Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life." Matthew 25:46

On Sunday, the Portland Fire & Rescue department reported that a bystander performed CPR and helped revive a runner who had collapsed on the course of the Portland Marathon (at about mile 15) after going into cardiac arrest. They said this bystander-turned-good-samaritan quickly evaluated the man, determined CPR was necessary and started chest compressions. PF&R later reported that the man survived due, greatly in part, to the quick response of the bystander and EMS later transported the fallen runner to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

You know, when it comes to helping people in physical danger, most of us would have done the same thing and stepped in to help. Wouldn't you agree? Sadly though, there are millions of people in the world that are in danger of spiritual death--and Christians are doing nothing to help, content to just stand by and watch, even though the Bible is very clear that those who have not accepted Jesus Christ as their Savior will die an eternal death and "go away to eternal punishment." And since we would not want that to happen to anyone, shouldn't we be more than bystanders? Shouldn't we be those people who have determined that sharing Christ with those around us is not an option but a requirement? I sure think so.

So if we truly believe there is only one way to "eternal life" and only the "righteous" will enter into it, let us do more than just stand and watch. Let us step in and be His messengers. Let us be the ones to revive a lost world.

Heavenly Father, thank you for your salvation and the eternal life that awaits every believer. Help us to take the Great Commission seriously and go and make disciples of all nations, beginning by telling those people in our own backyard. May we realize how final death is for those who don't know you and be bold in spreading the Message. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Not in control

"In their hearts humans plan their course, but the LORD establishes their steps." Proverbs 16:9

Image result for chicago marathon finish line 2017 pic

Like many runners at the Chicago Marathon Sunday, Dan Kapinus' race did not go as expected. Although he prepared for the race by training hard, using data tracking and studying years of his own running statistics that indicated his training pace would get him the sub-four-hour marathon he had planned, nothing could have prepared him for this 26.2 mile race where the temperatures climbed into the mid-70s. After crossing the finish line in 4:29:19 (much later than he had "planned"), he said, "All the tech in the world can’t control the weather and it can’t control your body. The heat really started to mess with me."

You know weather conditions aren't the only things that you and I can't control. We can't control things like flight delays, sickness, getting stuck in traffic, injuries or layoffs-and those are just a few of the things that could serve to ruin any plans you and I might make. Solomon clearly understood that when he wrote, "In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps." He was reminding us that is it foolish for any of us to think that we have the power to make anything happen on our own--and that we would not be able to take even one step without God providing the power to do so.

So rather than planning our own "course" today, may you and I say, "God willing, we will do this or that." And then may we direct our eyes toward Him-in every step saying, "Lord, direct my way." After all, His ways are always better than ours anyway. Wouldn't you agree?

Heavenly Father, thank you for your Word that so clearly tells us that we can do nothing apart from you and cannot control the paths our lives take. Knowing that, may we look to you for guidance before taking even a single step or making a single plan. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Together we can do so much

"Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms." 1 Peter 4:10

Helen Keller once wrote, "Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much." This was most certainly the case this past weekend when, by working together at the fourth annual Frog Hill Half Marathon/10k and Leapfrog 5k, so much was accomplished. You see, this race is more than just a "race". It's a time when many members of the community, from different groups and organizations and with different skills and talents, work together to create an event they feel is important for giving runners and walkers an opportunity to achieve their goals and have a great time while doing it.

And you know, when it comes to using our individual talents to benefit those around us, the Bible is clear that each of us "should use whatever gift" we "have received to serve others." And that's exactly what happened on Friday and Saturday. Those individuals who had the gift of organizing, gladly organized the water stations and registration tables. Those who had the gift of photography took pictures. Those who had the gift of encouragement made signs and cheered on the participants throughout the course and at the finish line, and those with leadership skills took the lead to coordinate the volunteers and ensure they were at their proper locations. Can you imagine one person trying to do all that? It just wouldn't work, would it?

So may we all use our God-given talents to work alongside one another, as He intended, to do great things in our homes, our churches and in our communities knowing that "together we can do so much." This race was surely testimony to that!

Heavenly Father, thank you for those people who are willing to serve expecting nothing in return. Help us to be "those people" and use our gifts to help others. Thank you Lord for using this race, and those that helped to make it happen, to show our community the love of Christ. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Bear the burden

"Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ." Galatians 6:2

One of the biggest mistakes racers, especially first-time marathoners, make is going out too fast and then bonking towards the end. Ally Spiroff, a former track and cross-country runner for Chicago's Loyola University, says she was stuck in this habit until her coach gave her a bit of advice. Spotting her trend, he advised her to shadow a training partner with a similar pace but a better racing strategy. And you know what? It worked. By following her "teammate's" instruction, she broke her bad habit and, by keeping a training buddy, was able to run solid throughout her first marathon to finish in an amazing time of 3:06.

As this story illustrates, it's easier to make needed changes when someone is willing to help make it happen. Someone who will patiently point out what it is you and I might be doing wrong and then guide and instruct us how to do it right. Paul surely understood the importance of helping our "teammates" too, which is why he urged the Christians at Galatia to "carry each other's burdens" that they might "fulfill the law of Christ." He was telling them that they should have sympathy for one another, and love their Christian brothers and sisters so much that they would bear their cares, problems, worries and difficulties as their own-willing to come alongside them and aid them in whatever way they needed.

Perhaps you know someone who needs help or encouragement today? Maybe someone who needs help in breaking a bad habit or just needs a few words of support? Won't you be the one to gently reach out and lend a hand, to be the "teammate" who makes a difference?

Heavenly Father, thank you for those people who are always willing to help others and are always looking for ways to "fulfill the law of Christ" by loving them as Jesus did. Help us to be "those" people each and every day. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

All glory to God

"Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think." Ephesians 3:20

Tracy Guerrette, a 37-year-old Maine native, won the Maine Marathon in 2:43:47 Sunday and qualified for the Olympic trials. Upon crossing the finish line, this bold Christian athlete knelt to give thanks to God for the victory. Of this accomplishment she said, "For me, it's such a gift from God to be able to run, I really feel His presence... I was pretty much in prayer the last couple miles, just asking God to give me extra strength and grace. I was just overwhelmed and very thankful."

Isn't it refreshing to see someone giving the glory where it is due? The truth is God deserves the glory for all the good things in our lives (but seldom gets it). Everything we have.. our talents, our possessions and our abilities all come from God and there's nothing we can do apart from "his mighty power at work within us", a power so great that we can "accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think" because of it.

And while God didn't design us all to run a 6-minute mile, he did give us everything we need to fulfill the purpose to which we were called. And for that, may we kneel down to give thanks and then declare "all glory to God" for our victories and successes, no matter how big or small.

Heavenly Father, thank you for the good things you have given each of your believers. Help us to be ever mindful that everything we are, everything we have and everything we can ever accomplish comes from you that we might never claim the glory for ourselves. In all things, may all glory go to you. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Against the flow

"You adulterous people, don't you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God." James 4:4

Image result for runner facing traffic pic

According to an article published by Competitor Magazine yesterday, there's one rule of road running that can save your life-going in the opposite direction of traffic. According to a new study out of Finland (whose results should come as no surprise) the common mistake of running or walking with the flow of traffic, or in the same direction, puts those running by the road at a very high risk of danger. According to the research, runners and pedestrians have a 77 percent lower risk of being struck and injured by a car when running or walking facing traffic. This is one instance then where going "against the flow" can help keep a person safe.

And when it comes to determining what direction we should be facing in our spiritual lives, the Bible clearly warns us that "friendship with the world", or going with the flow is something we should avoid. You see, walking in the ways of the world by loving its' pleasures at the expense of obeying God, not only makes it impossible for us to be friends with Him, but actually makes us his enemy. That's why it is so important that believers be set apart and found walking closely with Christ and "against the flow" at all times.

So what direction would you say you're facing today? One thing is certain my friend, if you're not walking to the Lord, you're walking away from Him-and, by doing so, have placed yourself at a very high risk of danger.

Heavenly Father, thank you for your Word that so clearly warns us of the dangers of loving the things of this world more than you. Help us to realize how truly dangerous this can be for us and to quickly make a u-turn if we are on that path today. While going "against the flow" won't be easy, help us to remember that it will be worth it. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Steadfast

"Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness." James 1:2,3

Image result for runner in blizzard pic

In an article titled, "Tough Runs Enable Us to Tackle Life’s Challenges", Cindy Kuzma wrote, "Our willingness to do hard things while running makes it easier to overcome obstacles in our non-running lives. As runners, we willingly do hard things. We run hills, chase PRs, wreck our feet, endure bad weather and crushing setbacks. So when life gets tough, we’re not in unfamiliar territory." In other words, by constantly testing and pushing through our pain limits, we become more resolved, able and determined to handle the trials that life throws our way.

And it's this same type of resolve, or steadfastness, that James says is produced in us each time we, by faith, overcome obstacles in our spiritual lives. It's no wonder then that we are told to "count it all joy" when we "meet trials of various kinds" because we know that these times of suffering or pain are only working to make us stronger, more committed and better able to withstand the bigger "trials" that might be coming our way.

So if life has gotten overwhelming for you today, won't you smile and have faith that these tough times have a purpose? This trial, and each one to follow, is producing a steadfastness in you that will enable you to keep your joy as you endure to the end.

Heavenly Father, although no one likes trials, thank you for the perseverance and steadfastness that they produce in every believer. Help us to remember that it's only during tough times, when we trust you to see us through, that our faith grows stronger. Help us to always keep our joy Lord that we might press on and endure to the very end. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

On Pace

"Search for the LORD and for his strength; continually seek him." Psalm 105:4

Image result for running pacer pic

"Are you on pace?" asked the volunteer directing the marathoners to go left yesterday at the Joplin Mother Road Marathon where I was a pacer. Knowing instantly that he was referring to whether I was on track to get the runners following me to the finish line in the advertised time printed on the pacer stick I was carrying, I quickly glanced at my Garmin, smiled and cheerfully replied, "Yes." You see, checking my GPS watch continually (every few seconds or so) had been crucial in reaching this 17 mile check-point on time and would be even more critical in staying consistent as the miles wore on.

And while these Global Positioning devices are great for quickly notifying runners when they have gotten off pace so they can readjust their stridethey can only do so when they are examined constantly. Likewise, the same can be said of our walk with Christ-the success of which is directly determined by how frequently we look to Him for guidance. The Psalmist knew that full well when he urged us to "continually seek him." And if anyone knew the importance of doing that and how easy it was to go off course when not keeping their eyes on God (even for a moment), it was King David.

You see, if David had been "continually", or unceasingly, looking to the Lord for guidance, he would have known that he had gotten off pace the moment he set his eyes on Bathsheba and could have immediately adjusted his stride and prevented the consequences that followed. Knowing that, may you and I learn from his mistake today and vow to "continually seek him" that we might not repeat it.

Heavenly Father, thank you for your Word that allows us to find you and know your ways. Help us, through prayer and Bible study, to continually seek you and your will for our lives. May there never be a moment when we take our eyes off you. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.
