Encouragement is key

"When news of this reached the ears of the church in Jerusalem, they sent Barnabas to Antioch. When he arrived and saw the grace of God, he rejoiced and encouraged them all to abide in the Lord with all their hearts. Barnabas was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith, and a great number of people were brought to the Lord." Acts 11:22-24 BSB

One of the things I love most about my job as the Wellness Coordinator at our local health department is coaching runners young and old—something I was blessed to do yesterday as I taught and timed elementary children at an after school program doing sprints and then instructed adults at a Couch to 5k program later that evening. And I must say, as I cheered and encouraged both groups on, I couldn't help but smile knowing that the difference between a person giving up or pressing on to the finish line is many times as simple as receiving encouragement. It's true. Whether a runner is six or sixty, hearing words that will give them the confidence or motivation to keep going when they feel like giving up or cause them to work harder is crucial to their success. Add in a pat on the back or a high five and the results are amazing!

And you know, when it comes to encouragement, each one of us would do well to have a "Barnabas" in our corner. What I mean by that is this... Barnabas, whose name means "son of encouragement," was "a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith" and known for the way he uplifted, vitalized and stirred people's spirits. So much so that "a great number of people were brought to the Lord" by his encouragement. And in a world that's growing increasingly dark and anything but uplifting, having a personal cheerleader in our lives could very well make all the difference in whether we stay true to the faith or throw in the towel.

So if you don't have a person in your life that will lift you up and encourage you to "abide in the Lord" with all your heart, seek one out my friend. It could most certainly change your life. And if you have the gift of encouragement like Barnabas did, look for ways and opportunities to spread it. It could most certainly change someone else's life.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the reminder that words or actions of encouragement have more power than we could ever comprehend. Help us to be people of encouragement Lord that we might influence others to seek You and to stay true to You. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!!!

We must speak out

"'Go, gather together all the Jews who are in Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my attendants will fast as you do. When this is done, I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish.'" Esther 4:16 NIV

On April 22 Maggie Williams competed in the 800 meters at Summit High School, focused on breaking the school record of 2:10.54. And while Maggie did what she set out to do--breaking the record by more than two seconds--she collapsed face first right before the finish, with her momentum carrying her across the line. But she couldn't see and couldn't hear. The cause? "Complete oxygen debt," her coach, Dave Turnbull, explained. He went on to say, "I’ve been doing this for 31 years, I’ve never seen anybody basically lose consciousness. I’ve never seen that in the way it happened with Maggie.” Turnbull was so moved by the event (Maggie also suffered a concussion from the fall) that he wrote a letter to the OSAA, the state’s governing body on high school sports imploring them to lobby officials to revisit the mask mandate for runners. And because of his courage to speak out, the Oregon Health Authority updated it's mask guidance for non-contact sports on Monday, allowing athletes to remove their masks during competition.

And you know, in a world where people are becoming more and more afraid to speak out because of the possible repercussions and the response of the 'cancel culture', every believer would do well to follow the example of Esther who, like Coach Turnbull, feared for the safety of those she loved--in this case the Jewish people who were in danger of being completely destroyed--and took action to remedy the situation saying, "I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish.'" Esther not only recognized that she was in a position to speak up because the Lord had placed her there but was willing to die "for such a time as this."

So knowing full well that the Lord is sovereign and that you and I are also where we are (wherever that may be) for such a time as this, let us not be silent. Let us instead be willing to speak up when we are called to do so, regardless of the consequences. After all, we really have nothing to fear when God is by our side.

Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us a spirit of power rather than a spirit of fear. Lord, please cause us to understand that each and every one of us is not where we are by accident. You are sovereign over all Lord. I pray that the understanding of that would fill every believer with the courage to speak up when they need to regardless of the consequences. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!!!

BASS PRO MIDWEEK MOTIVATION-Go for a walk

Hello runner friends!
Welcome back to the Bass Pro Fitness Series
MIDWEEK M😊TIVATI😊N blog!

Now let's get started by talking about how slowing down for a while can actually help you speed up. So if that last sentence has you saying, "What? No way! That's not possible," keep reading. I'm talking about walking.... you know that happy medium between doing nothing and running. It turns out that this activity many runners would deem too easy and unworthy of their time is the very thing that could not only improve their alignment and form but mentally motivate them to stay in the game when running has become mundane.

So let's look at a few ways that using walking as cross-training can have you running your best race ever.

1. Walking provides a great opportunity for you to slow down and think about your posture. And if you think posture isn't important, consider this... From the epidemiological studies it can be concluded that running injuries lead to a reduction of training or training cessation in about 90% of all injuries, about 45% of all injuries lead to medical consultation or medical treatment. In 75% of these, running injuries are due to constant repetition with incorrect positioning or posture. I don't know about you but as a runner who keeps getting injured, this was an eye opener for me and something I will be embracing from this point forward. Especially as I sit and write this while dealing with yet another lower leg issue. So embrace your walks. When strolling, think about keeping your shoulders directly over your hips, avoiding any arching or rounding of the back—like there’s a string pulling you tall from the top of your head. This may feel awkward at first but it will be worth it. And remember, as with any other habit you want to maintain, keep practicing this over and over until it becomes normal.

2. Walking can help boost your core and arm strength if you do it with purpose. Hold your stomach in tightly as you meander through your workout. It may not seem like you're doing much but doing it for a long period of time is what counts. Similarly, mimic bicep and tricep curls as you walk. You may not have weights but the repetitions will add up. And want to add some fun into your saunter and really fire up those abdominal muscles? Add in knee-to-elbow crosses. As you step forward, bring your opposite hand behind your head with your elbow pointing out to the side. Rotate your abdomen and touch your elbow to your opposite knee. Doing these often will allow you to get in that ab workout you may not do otherwise.

3. Walking can actually help you increase your endurance mentally and physically. So let's talk about the mental part. When using walking for a cross training exercise whether to give yourself a break or rehab an injury, the general rule to maintain current endurance is to take the number of minutes you would normally run and double it. For instance, if you normally run an hour each day, walk for two hours. Time spent on your feet, albeit slow, will prepare you mentally to run those longer periods of time or to saunter around an expo and sight-see the day before a big race knowing that you have the stamina. And by adding in another hour or even another workout into your day, you can actually build endurance with lower impact and chance of injury or re-injury.

4. Walking can give you a break from the monotony of training. Let's face it. Doing one thing all the time can be tough. The constant fight with yourself to (a) do it and (b) do it as well as you did the day or the week before, can be relentless and exhausting. I have seen so many runners burnout this way and lose all motivation! But by including walking in your regime, you’re giving yourself a break from a monotonous routine and taking the pressure off physically and, more importantly, mentally. Want even more bang for your buck on throwing in a workout that will break up your training monotony and recharge your passion to train? Get outside! In fact, get outside and go somewhere new and maybe even at a new time you've never gotten out before. Not a morning person? Get out and soak up a sunrise once in a while. The same goes for you early birds. Trade a few sunrise walks for sunset ones. Ditch the headphones and experience nature. There's nothing quite like breathing in fresh air and seeing new things that can give a person a fresh perspective.

So there you have it friends... those are some great reasons to get out and walk a bit. Still not convinced? Check out a few quotes about the mental, physical, and emotional benefits of walking.

God can restore lost years

"I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten, the hopper, the destroyer, and the cutter, my great army, which I sent among you." Joel 2:25 ESV

Earlier in the month, Gracie Laney, a senior at Utah's Logan High, was competing in the 4x200-meter relay heat during the Grizzly Invitational when she sensed that someone was gaining on her as she rounded the final turn before the finish line. Only it wasn't someone but something that was closing in fast. That something turned out to be Holly, a goldendoodle who had broken free from her owners and had taken off with her leash flying, nearly tripping one runner as she pursued Laney. "I was trying to focus and to run my best 200,” Gracie said, “and I think coming around the corner, you know, I was pretty confident that I was far enough ahead, that I could keep [the lead] and that I could finish it first. But with maybe the last 15 yards, I could kind of feel something coming up on me, and I thought it was a runner. Then I realized it was just too small and was a dog. I thought, ‘I’ll just keep running,’ because it wasn’t trying to attack me or jump on me or anything. It was kind of running by my side.” Laney, who plans to attend Utah State after graduation before going on a Mormon mission, was left with one regret: “I really wish I had gotten a selfie.”

And you know if we're honest, each and every one of us would admit to having at least one regret or feeling of sadness or disappointment, which is caused by something that has happened or something we have or have not done. In fact, the majority of people have a whole list of regrets; something that can cause deep heartache. Thankfully though, the Bible tells us that God can restore "the years that the swarming locust has eaten." What does that mean exactly? Well Charles Spurgeon explains it like this, "You cannot have back your time; but there is a strange and wonderful way in which God can give back to you the wasted blessings, the unripened fruits of years over which you mourned. The fruits of wasted years may yet be yours."

So if you're looking back on lost time with sadness today my friend, don't. You can't get back even one minute by doing so. Cling to Christ instead and look toward to the future, trusting God's promise to make the rest of your life full, fruitful and productive.

Heavenly Father, thank You for promising to redeem the time we may not have used as we should have. Compel us to lay our regrets and sadness at Your feet God, knowing they only serve to keep us from being who You want us to be today. Let us exchange them for the joy Your promise brings and look to the future with hope. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Divinely inspired events

"Led by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. And when the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for Him what was customary under the Law," Luke 2:27 BSB

While headed to our group run early Saturday morning, I had an overwhelming urge to pull into Kum and Go. "Well I guess I'll get a cup of coffee," I thought to myself, "even though I really don't want one." "Okay Lord," I prayed silently as I went in and looked around. "Please show me who it is I should speak to." Approaching the counter with my coffee in hand, I then sensed that I was supposed to talk to the young man in front of me. "Boy I hope it stops raining soon," I said in an attempt to open up the conversation. "Me too," came his reply as he shook his head. "I was traveling to Chicago from Oklahoma to visit family and my truck broke down here." After some more small talk and confirming that help was on the way, I wished him well and headed to my car. And that's when I felt the prompting to act again. As the man stood outside under the awning to make a call, I pulled up beside him and rolled down my window. "Sir," I called out. "I know I'm a complete stranger but it's no coincidence that we met and I just want you to know that I'll be praying for you." At that, the man smiled and said, "Bless you. You have no idea how much that means to me."

And you know, if you've ever been on the receiving end of hearing the right words at the right time, you know that it was a divinely inspired event. And these events which happen when a believer is "led by the Spirit,” as Simeon was, not only have the power to change someone's day or circumstances but their lives. What does it mean to be led by the Spirit though? It means to be walking so close with Jesus that you are not only able to discern the promptings of the Holy Spirit but are immediately obedient in following them. And we do this by meeting with Him daily through Bible study, prayer and meditation; something that is of the utmost importance if we are to grow in the grace and knowledge that shows us the way to walk.

So if you have not made reading and studying the Word your first priority, today's a great day to move it to the very top of your to-do list and keep it there my friend. After all, if you and I want to be "led by the Spirit," we must learn to recognize His voice and his promptings; something that regular time spent with the Lord allows us to do.

Heavenly Father, thank You for this divinely arranged appointment that blessed me as much as it did him. Lord, compel us to read and study the Word that we might come to know You better so we can walk in step with You. Use us in big ways Lord to lead the lost to You. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!!!

Be listening

“But the word of the Lord remains forever.” And that word is the Good News that was preached to you.” 1 Peter 1:25 NLT

On April 10, Brad and Ashley Pilon were nearly 36 miles into the Goggins Challenge when they noticed two abandoned kids bikes on the side of the path by the South Saskatchewan River in Canada. Sensing trouble, Brad said he turned around in time to hear screams and see a young boy running towards him looking for help. Then he said, “I looked left and saw a boy in the water who needed help.” Seeing that the boy couldn’t swim, Brad jumped into the frigid water and brought the boy back to dry land where his friend and another good samaritan assisted getting them out of the water. Ashley later shared the video of the rescue on Facebook. She did so to remind people how dangerous the river can be and for runners to be aware of their surroundings, because it could save a life. It got a lot of attention locally and nationally in the days after. “There’s been a lot of ‘thank yous’ and lot of ‘hero’ comments and such,” Brad said. “What I say is a lot of things went right that day. We weren’t wearing headphones like we sometimes do, there wasn't a strong current, and we were there at the right time and we’re happy the boy is okay.”

And you know, when it comes to saving a life, spiritually speaking I mean, you and I would do well to make sure we aren’t wearing headphones or doing anything else that would prohibit us from hearing a call for help from someone in need of hearing the “Good News"-- the Good News that led us to salvation when it was preached to us and is now our duty and obligation to preach to the lost that they too might be saved. But guess what? We can’t do that if we aren’t actively listening or are too busy in our daily lives to heed the voice of the Holy Spirit that will lead us to be at the right place at the right time to do the right thing and to say the right words.

So in the midst of a fast paced world that’s full of noise and distractions, let us strive to be ever quiet, discerning, and intent on listening to those people God puts in our path--something that will not only allow us an opportunity to help them in their time of need but to share the Good News if they have yet to hear it.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the everyday opportunities You give us to be the hands and feet of Jesus. Help us to empty our schedules and quiet our minds enough to be able to see these opportunities and take full advantage of them. Lord, help us to be bold remembering that we may only get one chance to share the Good News with someone we meet. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!!!

The best option

"You will not have to fight this battle. Take up your positions; stand firm and see the deliverance the LORD will give you, Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Go out to face them tomorrow, and the LORD will be with you.''" 2 Chronicles 20:17 NIV

Like many runners, Evan Matthews of Wyoming went out for a run over the weekend and brought along his cell phone. And it was a good thing he did because it allowed him to capture an encounter with a bear that will hopefully educate other runners on how to react if they too come face to face with a predator. As you can see in the video, Evan was heading back to his car when he spotted the bear who kept getting closer. Evan's next actions, as reported by Out There Colorado, most likely saved him from being attacked. One thing worth pointing out is that the runner stopped running. Running can trigger a chase response in some predators, making slowly backing away the best option. The runner in the video also continued talking to the animal. Talking is also helpful as this can remind the animal that you're not typical prey. As black bears are coming out of hibernation, they're hungry. Thankfully, human is not part of their standard diet. If you encounter a black bear in the wild, realize that it probably doesn't want to eat you and is most likely to attack if threatened. Slowly and calmly leave the area. Don't run and back away while facing the bear, but avoiding direct eye contact.

And you know, as scary as this situation was, the chances of any of us facing a predator attack while running is slim-to-none. However, the chances of us facing a spiritual attack are absolutely certain. And our best option when this happens is not to run but to take up our positions and courageously stand firm facing our enemy with the complete confidence that the Lord will give us deliverance. You see, you and I "will not have to fight" these battles if we ask for God's help. He will fight for us and God always triumphs. Which means, when we battle temptations, struggles, uncertainties and "the powers of this dark world," we need not be afraid or discouraged.

So no matter what type of predator or problem you might be facing today, stand firm my friend. Keep your eyes focused on Christ and remember that there's absolutely nothing to fear because there is NOTHING that can stand against the power of our God who wins every battle.

Heavenly Father, thank You for this timely reminder that not even the biggest army is a threat to You which means it's not a threat to us. Cause us to remember that You have never once lost a battle or broken a promise which means we can fully trust You to fight our battles and to work all things for our good and for Your glory. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!!!

BASS PRO MIDWEEK MOTIVATION - Here’s your sign

Hello runner friends!
Welcome back to the Bass Pro Fitness Series
MIDWEEK M😊TIVATI😊N blog!

Alright. So the signs of spring are everywhere right? Well they were before it snowed yesterday and the temps dropped below freezing anyway. But you can be sure all that will change in a day or two and the signs of new life will soon be reappearing. This is great news for all those people out there who rely on signs to lead their way. Which means if you're one of those people who have been waiting for a sign that it’s time to start running or to get back to it, here are some of my favorite motivational signs that you’ll only see at a race. Which is your sign that you need to run a race.... which is your sign that you need to train for one... which is your sign that you should start running... which is your sign that you need to start today.

So now that you've received your sure sign that you were "born to run," check out these other signs and what they might possibly mean to you.

This is your sign to never give up. It's your sign to keep digging deeper and deeper until you've grasped hold of that booger, I mean finisher's medal.

This is most definitely your sign that you need to run... a lot. After all, the lack of toenails is a sure sign to everyone that you're a serious runner. And hey, if all toenails end up in a better place, you're actually doing your feet a favor.

This is definitely a sure sign that you are a work in progress. That means that you have lots of work to do... work that won't get done unless you get up and get it done. No one can do it for you. So take that first step today and be one step closer to being "there" which is whatever the goal is that you set for yourself.

This is your sign that although training might get tough, someone else's training is going to be tougher than your's. Let that thought motivate you to keep pressing on.

This is most definitely your sign to keep your eyes focused on what's in front of you and to keep running or walking as fast as you can! Never take your eyes off the goal and keep a sense of humor while you're training because a lot can go wrong.

This is your sign to keep all things in perspective. Think you're slow? Think again. You're just getting your money's worth and you're taking the time to enjoy the things around you. Think you can't be a runner because you don't look like one? Runners come in all sizes, shapes, ages and fitness levels. Embrace your uniqueness and get out there! Look for the positive in everything and you'll soon find the positive in everything.

This is your sign that if you can't run then walk. Just keep moving. Too many people think you have to run to enter races. This is simply NOT true!! Movement is movement and a finish is a finish no matter how long it takes. And do you see that smile on the girl's face that is holding the sign? That's your sign to make having fun your number one priority. So get moving and enter that race.

Ok, so let's get real here.. this is your sign that not starting is the worst thing you could ever do.

Do you realize that less than one percent of the population will ever complete a marathon? And that only ten percent of that same group will ever complete a 5k? That means you will be inspiring someone else no matter the distance or the time it takes you to get there. This is your sign then to get out there and make the world a better place by sprinkling joy with every step! For real... in a world with so much negativity, inspiration to do positive things is needed more than ever. So lace up those shoes and get moving!

For the person who is still unconvinced that they have what it takes to finish a race, this is your sign. The voice in your head that says you can't do it is indeed a liar. You can do nearly anything you set your mind to. And if you doubt that, read the sign again and again and again.

So there you have it friends, the signs don't lie. Now is most definitely the time for you to get moving, whether that's by running or walking. And now is also the time to get signed up (did you like that play on words?) for a race. And if you're unsure of which race, check out the Bass Pro Shops Fitness Series list of events. They have something for everyone.

Happy Running!!!

The common goal

"Do nothing out of selfish ambition or empty pride, but in humility consider others more important than yourselves." Philippians 2:3 BSB

"What were you doing this morning?" the text from my boss said early yesterday. "We could use some help at the clinic." "I'm recording in about 15 minutes at the radio station," came my reply. Knowing I could easily reschedule though, I placed the call to the station and then quickly texted her back that I was on my way to the COVID vaccination clinic our local health department where I work was holding that day. "What can I do?" I asked when I pulled up. "Put me where you need me." And to my delight, I was directed to the intake table where I would be able to get in some serious steps while doing what I loved to do... helping people. "I'm so blessed to be a part of this team," I thought to myself as I smiled and watched the way our "team" worked together. "We are a great team because every individual does whatever's necessary to achieve the common goal, laying aside what their title or job description says is their actual job."

And you know, this is exactly how we as a church must operate if we are to achieve the common goal of knowing Christ and making his great Name known. We must, as Paul wrote, "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or empty pride, but in humility consider others more important than" ourselves. And why is this so important? Because "selfish ambition" will ruin a church but humility will build it up. You see, when a person puts their own interests above those of the team (a self-above-others approach), the whole team suffers. But when each person puts the team first and considers how they can best serve the individuals (others-above-self approach) within it, the team works together and most effectively to achieve the common goal.

So no matter where God has placed you in your vocation today or what your job title might be, remember that you are ultimately working for the Lord and not for man. Surrender your will for His and put the needs of others before your own. Doing so will not only ensure that you're the best "team" member you can be but that Christ is glorified in your pursuit.

Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding us that members of a team must lay aside their own interests to achieve the common goal. Help us to do that very thing as individuals in your church Lord that we might be the most effective we can be in reaching the lost and making disciples. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!!!

Be prepared to give a defense

"But in your hearts sanctify Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give a defense to everyone who asks you the reason for the hope that is in you. But respond with gentleness and respect," 1 Peter 3:15 BSB

As reported by Runner's World yesterday, Eliud Kipchoge won the NN Mission Marathon in Enschede, the Netherlands Sunday in a time of 2:04:30. The world record-holder competed in the elite-only race with 70 runners aiming to secure an Olympic qualifying time after the majority of races were canceled or postponed due to the COVID-19 outbreak. The 2016 Olympic Marathon champion ran with fellow Kenyan Jonathan Korir and a pacemaker until about 30K before he made a move that put him clear of the rest of the field. He finished more than two minutes ahead of Korir (2:06:40) and third-place finisher Goitom Kifle (2:08:07) of Eritrea. With just three months months to go until the Tokyo Olympic Games, "the world record-holder" they said "proved he’s ready to defend his Olympic gold medal in Japan."

And you know, when it comes to being ready to defend something, the Bible says that you and I should "always be prepared to give a defense" to everyone who asks us the reason for the hope we have inside. And we do this by first sanctifying Christ as our Lord; which means revering, honoring, respecting and following Jesus above everything else in our lives. It's this close relationship that will then lead us to seek more of Him through the pages of the Bible which will in turn prepare us to justify the strong and confident expectation we have in Jesus Christ, that what He promised He will do, with all "gentleness and respect.”

So seek Jesus above all else my friend. Be prepared to tell others about what He has done in your life to substantiate the hope you have placed in Him so that they might come to seek Him and place their hope and trust in Him too.

Heavenly Father, thank You for being the God we can place our total hope and trust in. Your promises have always proved to be true and You have never once left us on our own. Give us the words to give a defense of the many reasons we have to follow You so that others might seek to place their hope in You and follow You as well. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

No hometown advantage

"Then Jesus told them, “A prophet is honored everywhere except in his own hometown and among his relatives and his own family.'" Mark 6:4 NLT

While perusing through the latest news about running yesterday, it was refreshing to not only see races opening back up but even new ones being debuted; one of which being the first annual Muddy River Marathon set to take place on May 1 right here in Missouri. In fact, local runner Carol Winter who was interviewed by KFVS12 News yesterday was also very happy that she wouldn't have to travel to participate in a 26.2 mile race. "I think it’s great to have it right here in Cape Girardeau, so a lot of us are just excited for that point. You almost feel like you missed something when you go to these races and the local people know the twists and turns and they know the area and it’s always fun to do that. But it’s nice to have that kind of hometown advantage and be able to train the course.”

And you know, when it comes to having a hometown advantage, Jesus said that "a prophet," or worker for God, "is honored everywhere except in his hometown and among his relatives and his own family." Unfortunately for us, this means that not only will ministering and witnessing to those closest to us fail to put us in a favorable position for the Message we preach to be heard and accepted, it will many times put us in the exact place where we will experience rejection. And while it would be easy to become disheartened by the refusal of our loved ones and neighbors to believe in the One we represent and live to serve, we must understand that they aren't really rejecting us but Jesus.

So make it your goal to serve God with all your mind, body and soul my friend no matter the opposition. Have the skin of a rhino and the heart of a dove so that when words of rejection are spoken, you can let them slide off your back without letting them harden your heart.

Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding us that the very people we want most to reach are most likely the very ones who will reject us. Help us to discern when it's time to dig in and try harder to reach them and when it's time to shake the dust off our feet and move on Lord. Give us the wisdom to use our time wisely that we might make the most of the time we have to reach the lost. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Consistency sets us apart

"But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!: Galatians 5:22-23 NLT

In April of 2018, the world watched in awe as Desiree "Des" Linden battled the elements for 26.2 miles to become the Boston Marathon female champion. To say it was an exciting race would be an understatement. Not one to rest on past fame though, Des made the leap to ultrarunning and gave it her all once again on April 13 at a small race in Oregon to set an unofficial 50k world record of 2:59:54. Do you realize just how fast that is? Journalist Sarah Lorge Butler who was onsite to watch and report the accomplishment later tweeted, "Even when my math is right (most often not) my thumbs don't work. Here are the splits I caught: 38:08 (6.55 ish miles, first turnaround) 1:15:51 (half marathon) 1:53:35 (19.7 ish miles) 2:31:12 (marathon) 2:59:54 (final time. Got that one right the first time)" So, if these splits end up correct, Desiree kept a 5:47 minute-mile pace for the first half marathon, was still at 5:46 overall pace at the marathon mark, and finished with a 5:47 overall pace for 50k. Talk about consistency! Is that amazing or what?

And you know, when it comes to running the Christian race, every believer should be known for their consistency as well. Which means, from the start line to the finish line, the world should be able to see that we are different. You see, while a number of people might be able to display some of the qualities the Bible tells us the Holy Spirit produces in the life of a believer--love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control--for a brief time, they can't do it for long because they are ultimately controlled by their fleshly nature. It's only by the power of the Holy Spirit that anyone can overcome that nature to display "this kind of fruit" consistently; fruit that sets us apart as followers of Jesus Christ.

So strive to be consistent in all your actions my friend. Show "love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control" on all occasions, especially when the world is displaying the direct opposite. This behavior will not only cause others to look at us but to seek the One who makes these actions possible.

Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us the Holy Spirit to live inside us and to guide us. Help us to surrender our will to your's Lord that we might display behavior that is so contrary to the world's that people would be drawn to us out of curiosity and be led to You by our testimony. It's in Your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

BASS PRO MIDWEEK MOTIVATION - Scratch the if only

Hello runner friends!
Welcome back to the Bass Pro Fitness Series
MIDWEEK M😊TIVATI😊N blog!

Now let's get started by talking about what a difference a year makes and why it should motivate you to lace up those running shoes...

As a runner and race director, let me take you back to the spring of 2020. Rumors were circulating that the "virus" that had forced China into a lockdown was now being detected in the United States. But still the 12-hour Racing for Daylight Ultra event I was directing on March 7th went on. And then.... nothing. Every single major event for the year was cancelled almost immediately after that. We went from being in-person on that first weekend in March to running the St. Louis Go Marathon virtually around a small track behind our local school, not daring to get too close to one another. Wow. And while running wasn't canceled, it was certainly changed for a year. But guess what???? Races are opening back up again!! The Bass Pro Fitness Series successfully had their fall events with some protocols put in place and St. Louis just celebrated a weekend of live running once again.

But do you know what the events of last year should have taught all of us? Nothing.. and I mean NOTHING is certain. So while you can do something, DO something! Races are open and it's time to knock some things off your bucket list. And that means it's time to get serious. If you're still saying, "Maybe I'll wait a while," let me give you two words that I hope will change your mind... if only. Do you know how many times I heard that last year? Especially as a Health Department worker during a pandemic? "If only" I had done this or "if only" I had done that before I couldn't. Fill in the blank of what this or that was for you but my point is this... "if only's" only leave a person with regret.
So in the spirit of seizing the moment, check out these five tips that I hope will motivate you to attempt something that is big enough to scare you at least a little bit. And whatever “that” is for you, make it epic.

1. So here we go. I've said this before and I'll say it again but the first thing you MUST do is to sign up for a race and then make it public. No excuses! If you don’t do this, your chances of failure are exponentially increased because you have nothing to be accountable to or for. Face it... if you've got no skin in the game, you lose nothing if you drop out at halftime right? And who would even know you quit if you hadn’t made your goal known? But if you've paid for a race and told your family and friends, that makes it real! Nobody wants to let others down and nobody wants to shell out a large sum of cash for no reward. So do your research. Pick a goal that is attainable, yet challenging. Then don't keep it to yourself!

2. This one is so important. Don't just tell your family and friends, tell your runner friends! They are the ones who will not only hold you accountable but will join you in your training and encourage you every step of the way. And if you don't have a running group, find one!! No excuses! Check social media and ask around. And don't be shy! Chances are, if you're looking for a running group, someone else is too. So start your own if you have to. And worst case scenario? Join an online running group. Get plugged in and get some support. You'll be amazed at how much this will motivate you to keep pressing on!

3. This should be a no-brainer but many times it's not... Create a training plan! Customize the plan to fit your life and remember that no plan is not set in stone. Life happens and your plan must be flexible. This is so important!! And remember too, this might require time and research but it will be so worth it. Once you create the plan, don't be afraid to tweak it a bit when, if and as you need to so that it will fit into your ever-changing life. This will keep you from getting burnt out by a plan that's too rigid, too inflexible and no longer enjoyable.

4. Have fun! Unless you're paying the rent with your race earnings, learn to take life less seriously. After all, no one's getting out of this thing alive. And from the perspective of someone who's done 94 marathons and countless ultras and other races, running is about getting away from the drama, problems and seriousness of the world. It's the one activity you can control and that can allow you to escape for a while to recharge your batteries, renew your attitude, and refresh your spirit.

5. Don't take running for granted. So if you're having fun and enjoying running, you're most likely not taking it for granted but.... if 2020 taught us anything, it's to appreciate the good things we have while we have them and to be thankful to the Giver of all good things. Running is truly a gift and so are friends to share it with. And although your days might seem long now, they will soon pass. Make the most of them so that you will never have to live with the "if only" regret.

So there you have it friends. Life is short. "If only's" suck. Time is ticking and you never know what tomorrow, much less next month or next year, will bring. So while you still have breath in your lungs, make the most of every moment you have. And I don't know about you, but I truly believe that there's no other sport in the world that can make a person feel more alive and value every breath more than running. So get out there and get to it! Sign up for a race and knock something off your bucket list while you can. You won't regret it.

Happy Running!!!

Share your story

"Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in Jesus because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I ever did.'" John 4:29 BSB

“It was rough, but I made it through... God has carried me through insane stuff, the unimaginable. While it may not be ideal to have brain surgery and radiation, I’m alive." Those were the words Megan Troutwine shared with a local Tampa news station yesterday when talking about her recent battle with brain cancer. Megan went on to describe how she first started running at the Boys and Girls Club as a kid. It's there, she said, that she was first introduced to the Publix Gasparilla Distance Classic in 2005; the race that is going to be her comeback celebration race. “I’ve done it every year minus two years since,” she said. The health battles force her to slow down on the course but, to her, it’s just important to be out there. “Right now, I am not able to run much at all. The thing is you don’t have to run a full 5k. You can walk it; you can run/walk it, you can do it however makes you happy because every finisher has a story." Indeed. Every finisher I have ever met has had a unique story.

And you know, when it comes to stories, every follower of Christ has one too. And not only do they have one that is unique, they have one that's worth sharing. Unfortunately though, that's just not happening. Why? Because a good majority of Christians don't think they are eloquent enough to share their testimony, which is simply the story of what Jesus has done in their lives. But they couldn't be further from the truth. Consider the woman Jesus met at the well. When she realized He was the long awaited Messiah and that He had chosen to speak kindly to her despite her sin, she couldn't contain her joy! Because He changed her life, she then went back to the town and simply said, "Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did.” Her story wasn't eloquent nor was it rehearsed. But you can believe that it was powerful! In fact, the Bible tells us that "many of the Samaritans from that town believed in Jesus because of the woman’s testimony."

So don't be shy about sharing your story my friend! Or worry about the words you will use to do it. Allow God to use you and your testimony so that others will believe in Him too. There's never been a more urgent time to share the Good News.

Heavenly Father, thank You for giving every one of us a unique and powerful story. Give us the boldness to share it Lord that the lost might seek You because of the words of our testimony. Compel us to speak Lord and remind us that bearing witness is not merely a suggestion but a command. It's in Your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!!!

Sheep need a Shepherd

When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them because they were confused and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd." Matthew 9:36 NLT

If you're like me, you've not only heard of organ donation but you have designated yourself as an organ donor upon death on the back of your driver's license. But did you know that, according to an article posted in Runner's World Magazine on April 09, that runners are considered ideal candidates to be living organ donors? Not many active people are aware of this key detail, the writer said, or why living organ donation is a better option in many cases. “Donation for kidneys is not only increasing and helping to decrease the shortage of organs, but we’ve also found that living donor kidneys, as opposed to cadaveric kidneys, have better outcomes,” Dr. Sheffield MD, Transplant Surgeon and Surgical Director of Heart Transplantation, Cleveland Clinic Weston Hospital in Weston, Florida said. “The immediate short-term function of those living donor kidneys is better than cadaveric kidneys and the long-term outcomes are excellent.” The majority of living donors who sign up, they went on to say, are those people who know someone close to them that needs an organ; people like 56-year-old runner Subbu Venkat who decided he was willing to make the ultimate act of humanity and compassion and became his relative’s living kidney donor in September 2014.

And you know, when it comes to compassion, or the sympathetic consciousness of others' distress together with a desire to alleviate it, the Bible says that when Jesus saw the "crowds, he had compassion on them..." Why? Because, like us before we accepted Jesus' offer to follow Him, "they were confused and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd." And Jesus' compassion was surely justified when you consider that sheep literally cannot survive long without a shepherd. They are not only prone to wandering off from the flock, they can't find pasture and water by themselves, they are wide-open and helpless against predator attacks, and will soon become plagued with diseases and unkempt hooves on their own. In other words, sheep are totally helpless without a shepherd and we are totally helpless without the Shepherd.

So if you've yet to make the decision to follow Jesus, let me ask you this... are you lacking direction today? Do you feel hopeless? Do you need guidance? Are you worn out, weary, and confused? Then simply say, "Jesus, I can't do this on my own anymore. I am a helpless sheep in need of a Shepherd. Come into my life and lead me along the right path all the rest of my days. I choose to surrender and follow You today."

Heavenly Father, thank You for the insight into just how helpless and hopeless we are until we choose to follow You. Thank You for being the good Shepherd who cares so much for us, your sheep, that You laid down your life to rescue us from our sins and vowed to lead us into life everlasting. Oh praise you for that today Lord. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Pursue growth every day

“But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen.” 2 Peter 3:18 NIV

On Sunday, April 4, 26-year-old runner Ruth Chepngetich from Kenya won the N Kolay Istanbul Half Marathon in 1:04:02, breaking the previous world record of 1:04:31 by 29 seconds. This was Chepngetich’s third win of the Istanbul-based race and her fastest time yet; Ruth was so fast, in fact, that she averaged a 4:53 mile and beat her personal record by more than one minute. “I am really happy with this amazing result,” Chepngetich told World Athletics. “The world record is something I have been dreaming about for some time, and I am so happy to do it on the streets of Istanbul.” But this amazing performance would not have been possible without the purposeful efforts Ruth put forth day after day to become better and faster; something you can be sure she will keep on doing if she wants to continue to improve.

And you know, when it comes to continually improving, the Bible urges all believers to "grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ" -- something that requires us to put forth purposeful effort each and every day to do those things (prayer, Bible study and meditation) that will draw us closer to Him and give us a better understanding of the Word. Why is this so important you might ask? Because continually improving our knowledge of the Truth is the only way that you and I can recognize and refute false teachers and ungodly doctrines, narratives, agendas and ideas; especially now as we draw closer to end days and see these things increasing, even within the walls of many "churches" and out of the lips of many "pastors."

So knowing that, in the words of Edwin Louis Cole, "knowledge of God's Word is a bulwark against deception, temptation, accusation, even persecution," let us strive to grow in the grace and knowledge of the Truth that we would be prepared to stand for it in the face of any and all circumstances. "To him be the glory both now and forever!"

Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding us to be on our guard against deceptive people and ideas. Cause us to seek You at all times that we might get to know You better and better so that we would be ready to recognize and call out those things that are contrary to the Word. It's in Your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!!!

The cause of Christ

"Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God--" Romans 1:1 NIV

In a perfect world, I would do nothing but sleep, eat, run and worship Christ. But since our world is not perfect... eating, running, and having a place to sleep requires money which means I'm in need of employment. Thankfully though, I have what I believe to be the best job in the world which is working for my local health department as the Wellness Coordinator. And while my job description might have changed a bit since the events of last year, I absolutely love what I do and I love being a part of a team that serves our community--a team that now includes countless volunteers who work our vaccination clinics, staff our events and, most recently, donate their time and expertise to coach the participants of a new fitness program the health department offers. Each and every one of these volunteers is priceless and yet they rarely get credit for their actions; nor want it for that matter. They serve merely to help others because it is their calling and they know that by serving others they are serving Christ.

And you know, if a volunteer is defined as a person who donates his or her time or efforts for a cause or organization without being paid, a Christian volunteer would be defined as "a servant of Jesus Christ." A title that Paul, "called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God," embraced.  You see, Paul knew that his time wasn't really his. Neither were his talents or his possessions. Everything he had was given to him by God and belonged to God. So to call himself a servant of Jesus Christ was Paul's way of acknowledging that he would give his time, efforts, and possessions to serve the One to whom he belonged; to serve the cause of Christ. And you can be sure that Paul expected nothing for his efforts in this life but looked towards the reward of eternal life with his blessed Savior in the life hereafter.

So if you were asked to define yourself today, what would you say? Would you call yourself "a servant of Jesus Christ?" I sure hope so my friend because only what we do for Christ will matter in the end.

Heavenly Father, thank You for being worthy of our undivided service and devotion. Remind us Lord that we serve You best in this world when we serve others. Cause us to look for opportunities to volunteer that we might lead others to the foot of the Cross by doing so. It's in Your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

BASS PRO MIDWEEK MOTIVATION-Make the right choice

Hello runner friends!
Welcome back to the Bass Pro Fitness Series
MIDWEEK M😊TIVATI😊N blog.

Now let's get started by talking about how quickly life can derail your plans and the two choices you have when life hands you an unexpected plot twist. But first, let's start with a story that runner Shelly Stout termed "A bittersweet and lengthy race recap: Bronco Buster Last Man Standing;"a story that illustrates just how quickly the plans we make can fall apart.

This was my first time running this format and as of a week before I was feeling strong and ready. Last Friday evening I started to have some pain and tightness in my right shin. Took it easy going into race week. I swallowed my pride and broke my run streak, completely resting it the two days before the race. It felt great yesterday morning. Then another issue arose 2 days ago… My allergies were getting the best of me, my asthma decided to flare up, to the point where I was having to use my inhaler. But I still wouldn’t let it get me down.

The first lap went perfect, I was right on pace and came in with 10 minutes to spare. 2nd loop I started to feel the tightness and achiness come back in my shin, but I thought “you got this girl.” My amazing friend Jill Brockman (who was crewing me) was right there to massage my shin and calf and feed me part of my peanut butter and jelly sandwich. 3rd loop the tightness became pain and I started to think “oh crap“. Consistently coming in with about eight minutes to spare it’s amazing what you can accomplish in that amount of time. Melissa Bland, was not only the race director but Rock Tape extraordinaire. Off I went on the fourth loop and that’s when everything fell apart. The pain in my shin became a sharp shooting pain to the point where I almost fell twice because it was hurting so bad. With 2 miles left in the loop I thought “just power through this sister“ and was thankful I still came in under the hour time limit. But I knew right then I had to stop. Just under 17 miles with all my body would give me. I cried a few tears, had a pity party, and then I looked around me. What I saw and felt lifted my spirits immediately. Smiles, words of encouragement, hugs, high fives, my husband there behind me, and an awesome personalized plaque!

Am I disappointed the race didn’t go how I know it could have and should have gone? Of course. But I’m not going to let one “bad“ race discourage me from continuing to give it my all. I really like this format of racing and will give it another go. I have made some amazing friends and progress over the years through running and racing. And so many of them were there yesterday. And so I shall take a (hopefully) short break from running, do some biking, and get some therapy on my shin.

I’ve learned over the years to find the silver lining in all situations, and so here is mine from yesterday: I was the ONLY woman that toed the line. After the first loop I officially became the first overall female finisher and the last woman standing! So there’s that. I really did have “a rootin tootin good time“ despite not having the race that I wanted to have. Because hey, that’s life. “If there is no struggle, there is no progress.”

Alright, so do you just love this or what? I know I do. So much so that I had to get a followup report on Monday morning when I asked permission to share Shelley's story. "Anything you want to add?" I asked her via Messenger. "I won't let an injury get me down. I will use this time to do more cross training and give my body the rest it needs," she replied. What a great attitude right? But guess what? That attitude didn't come naturally. The natural response of a runner who has just had their hopes dashed (and I speak from experience) is to be angry and resentful. After all, no one likes having to drop out of a race and no one likes getting injured. And this is where we get to the good part. Here are the two choices every runner must make when their plans don’t go as planned. And let me give you a hint... by making the right choice over and over you too can cultivate the attitude that says, "hey, that's life" and then makes the best of the situation.

Choice Number 1. Feel sorry for yourself. This is the sad start of a chain of events that will spiral quickly. Why? Because when you focus on what you didn't achieve, the way that you are feeling, and the fact that this was not fair to you, you will find yourself doing things that will make you even more miserable--things like being too bitter to encourage your friends, too envious to celebrate the success of others, and too into yourself to realize that it's just way life goes sometimes. Life isn't fair and it isn't predictable. But do you know what it is? It's a beautiful thing when you, like Shelley, learn to find the silver lining in all situations. Which brings us to choice number 2.

Choice Number 2. Acknowledge that things happen and vow to find the joy, aka the silver lining, in every situation you might find yourself in. And remember, this attitude is an acquired skill that is worth learning. Why? Because our attitudes are the only thing that we truly have control over. And a positive attitude will allow you to look back without regret. For instance, I, like Shelley, recently injured myself while attempting the PST 100 (Prairie Spirit Trail). I dropped out near mile 50 due to injury and am now in a walking boot. Do you think I have a reason to host a pity party for myself? And to complain about the unfairness of it all? If you said yes, let me ask you something.... what good would that do? Would it change my circumstances? Absolutely not! It would only leave me feeling miserable for the next few weeks. And honestly, who has time for that? So I've chosen to use this time to cross-train and to become stronger; which means I will be able to one day look back at this time and not regret the way I spent it. And you know what else I choose? Joy!! Why? Because joy is what opens our eyes to see those silver linings!!

So there you have it friends, in a world that's unpredictable at best, always choose to see the silver lining in all circumstances. And always, always, always choose joy!! Doing so won't necessarily change your situation but it will change the way you look at it. And that changed perspective will put a smile on your face every time.

Happy Running!!!
