We must repent

"The people of Nineveh believed God’s message, and from the greatest to the least, they declared a fast and put on burlap to show their sorrow." Jonah 3:5 NLT

Runner's World Magazine recently asked the question, "Should You Try Intermittent Fasting for Better Running Performance?" which is a question many other runners have asked. And after a series of tests, this is what they said: Researchers looked at 23 male runners who were assigned to either their usual dietary intake or eight weeks of time-restricted eating on a 16:8 schedule, which means they consumed all food within an eight-hour window each day. The remaining 16 hours also included sleep time. They found that fasting resulted in reduction in body mass, but didn’t show differences in any other variables. Researchers concluded that the body mass loss was likely related to lower calorie intake in the time-restriction group, but that fasting didn’t change their overall running performance. So there you have it...  fasting might not help a runners' performance but it certainly doesn't hurt it.

And you know, when it comes to fasting, the Bible is very clear that purposely abstaining from eating for a set period of time has amazing spiritual benefits, such as helping believers come to and express true repentance--as happened with the people of Ninevah after Jonah went to the city and proclaimed to its’ inhabitants that, because of their wicked ways, they would face God's judgement in 40 days. Thankfully, "the people of Nineveh believed God’s message" spoken through Jonah "and from the greatest to the least.. declared a fast and put on burlap to show their sorrow." And you'll love this part! Because God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, "he relented and did not bring on them the destruction he had threatened."

Sadly our world is just as evil today as it was in the time of Jonah. And the outcome of that sinfulness has not changed which means... the only way our nation, like the city of Ninevah, will be spared from God's coming judgement is to fast, pray and repent of our sins. So don't be silent today my friends. Proclaim "God's message" from the rooftops so that we might receive God's mercy rather than the destruction we so rightly deserve.

Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding us that there is still hope for our nation if we would only turn and repent today. Lord, help us to be like Jonah and boldly warn others of the judgement that is coming. Compel us to fast and pray for our leaders God and to urge all those who have not placed their trust in You to do so before it's too late. Have mercy on us Lord. It's in Your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!!!

Help fellow believers

"Dear brothers and sisters, if another believer is overcome by some sin, you who are godly should gently and humbly help that person back onto the right path. And be careful not to fall into the same temptation yourself." Galatians 6:1 NLT

In an article posted by Runners World Magazine on Tuesday, it was reported that runner Chris Weiland, a senior in his second year with the UCLA track and field and cross-country team, was kicked off the team after a video surfaced of him allegedly using “racist, sexist, and homophobic language” while on a personal phone call in 2019; a call that was supposed to be private and was prior to his arrival to UCLA. But just like that, Chris Weiland was 'canceled' with no opportunity for restoration. And while his words were most definitely offensive, nasty, hurtful and inappropriate, they were most likely precipitated by a bad breakup that left the young man so hurt and angry that he lashed out without considering the consequences--words that I'm sure he regrets having said now. But if you and I are honest, wouldn't we admit to having said things we regret too?

And you know, while this world is quick to 'cancel' people (many times even if they have apologized and asked for forgiveness) they feel have done wrong or who have had lapses in judgement and said things they shouldn't have, the Bible tells us that we "who are godly should gently and humbly" help them get "back onto the right path" instead. You see, every person will sin, it's just a fact. But that doesn't mean they can't be forgiven. And if God forgives them, how can we withhold our forgiveness? After all, we are no better right?

So think twice before you ‘cancel’ someone for their sins my friend. Instead choose to offer them the same grace the Lord offers you when you are “overcome by some sin” and need help to get “back onto the right path.”

Heavenly Father, thank You for the amazing grace You give that saves wretches like me who continually sin and fall short of Your glory. Lord, in a world that is becoming known for the way it ‘cancels’ people who mess up, let us be known for forgiving people who mess up that they might be led to the foot of the Cross by our actions. It’s in Your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

To live is Christ

“For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.” Philippians 1:22 NIV

As I finished up my run early Tuesday morning in town, I made my way to the parking lot where I work to walk a cooldown lap before heading into the office to shower (yes, I have the best job ever) and going to my desk. But on this day, having taken a few vacation hours to get in a longer training run than usual, I walked into the parking lot at the time when my coworker, Israel, was already busy directing traffic for our vaccination clinic. “Haha!” I joked as I approached him and pointed to my watch. “I have 34,000 steps already so you won’t beat me today! In fact, I’ll die before I’ll ever let that happen again (referring to the one and only day he ever got more steps than me and refuses to let me forget it)." “Better be careful what you say,” he replied jokingly. “God may take you up on that one.” Shrugging my shoulders, I smiled and said, “Oh well... to love is Christ, to die is gain. Either way I’m good.” “You’re so crazy,” came Israel’s reply as he stood there laughing and shaking his head.

And you know, that’s not the first time someone has called me crazy because of the way I view life. You see, while I truly love living, I know that I am here for the sole purpose of serving the Lord— something I wholeheartedly enjoy and strive to do each and every day. But as much as I love it, with every passing hour, I find myself growing more and more homesick and longing to be with my Savior. The apostle Paul certainly understood this which is the exact reason he wrote,” For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.” Paul was saying that he would gladly live for Christ until his dying breath but knew he would gain everything when he reached his final resting place... a place he desperately longed to be.

So how about you today? Can you declare like Paul, "to live is Christ and to die is gain?" I sure hope so my friend because it’s only when you and I are unafraid to die that we are truly free to live the life Jesus is calling us to... a life of wholehearted service and devotion focused on our sole purpose.

Heavenly Father, everything in this world is fading away and worthless compared to the priceless treasure of knowing You. Cause our hearts to grasp this today Lord that we might begin to view life through an eternal lens, serving you here to the best of our ability but anxious for the day when You will call us home. Free us from the fear of dying that we might serve You in ways that may seem reckless to the world but that will draw the lost to You. It's in Your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

BASS PRO MIDWEEK MOTIVATION-Make a fresh start

Hello runner friends!

Welcome back to the Bass Pro Fitness Series
MIDWEEK M😊TIVATI😊N blog.

Now let's get started by talking about excuses (you know, the reasons you give yourself and others to justify your lack of motivation to lace up your shoes and get out the door) and why now is the best time to get rid of them.

Okay... so I went for a run this morning and am happy to say that Spring is most definitely on the way!! The sun rose a bit earlier than usual, the birds were singing, the snow was melting and the smell of change was in the air. Without a doubt, the season of renewal is upon us. Which means Spring is the perfect time to shrug off all the excuses you had for allowing your running shoes (and your running goals) to get dusty and make a fresh start.

And now let's discuss the top three excuses I heard over the winter season for not running and why these excuses are no longer valid.

Excuse 1: I Don’t Have Time

By far, this is the top excuse I hear year round but especially this time of year. I get it... there hasn't been much sunlight in the morning or in the evening. And not everyone wants to venture out into the cold darkness with a headlamp or hop on the dreadmill (I mean treadmill). But guess what? That's all about to change! As the days progress, there will be more and more light which means you'll have more and more time to get outside. So what's a runner that has used this excuse to do now? Start back slow. Start scheduling in your outdoor runs the way you do your other appointments and be ready to hit the road. If that means setting out your clothes the night before, then do it. Go to bed early so you can wake up as planned. Vow to keep these appointments in the same way you keep your other ones. And if you feel your schedule is too tight to accommodate a 30 to 40 minute run at least four or five days a week, analyze your schedule and take off anything that isn’t as important as a good quality of life.

Excuse 2: Bad Running Weather

There is no one who lives somewhere with a perfect climate. As a runner, you will face bad weather days which will make it harder for you to run unless you’re determined to attain something out of it. How about reminding yourself that the improved quality of life obtained through running is the greatest thing you could ever attain? That being said, the cold weather is most likely behind us but don't fall into the trap of trading your "it's just too cold" excuse for "it's just too hot" or "just too..." you fill in the blank. This is a new start which means it's an opportunity to start seeing all-season running as a challenge and something to be enjoyed. Use Spring to fall in love with running again so that when the next season comes, and the next and the next, you'll have made running a priority and won't fall back into the trap of making excuses. And remember, if you’re training for a race then you need to train for any potential weather conditions that might occur on race day. Barring extreme or unsafe weather, running when it’s raining or a tad bit chilly isn’t going to kill you I promise.

However, if the weather really does happen to be extreme, be flexible. You can still get your run in if you have a game plan. Watch the weather forecast and plan to get up early to beat the heat, go after the storm passes or simply take it to the treadmill if it’s too cold. Also being prepared with the right gear is crucial.

Again, being prepared is key, and if you want to reach your goals come race day you need to keep your training runs consistent.

Excuse 3: Seasonal Depression (the thing that keeps you on the couch with the remote in one hand and a bag of Doritos in the other pining for sunlight while watching Netflix marathons)

Allowing the weather to control your mood can cause you to skip running which is an activity that has been proven to fight depression! Let's face it... darkness makes it hard to get up off the couch to do the very thing that will energize you and make you feel better. But guess what? The sun is overcoming the darkness more and more each day. Keep this in mind as you force yourself to go outside for a walk when you don't feel like running. Breathe in the air, focus on the moment and count your blessings as you allow the movement to pump those feel-good chemicals you so desperately need into your body. Force yourself to do this until the fog lifts and your joy returns. You'll be surprised at how quickly this happens.

So there you have it friends, instead of focusing on why you can’t go for a run, turn those reasons into your motivation. Change your mindset! Use this season of fresh starts to renew your love for running and being in the great outdoors. And remember... excuses are an athlete’s worst enemy. They are a person's worst enemy in general. Excuses breed mediocrity and steal your dreams, goals and ambitions. Living your best life right now requires sacrifice and hard work... something that can begin with a simple morning run. So determine today to trade your excuses for effort and you'll soon find that excuses are a thing of the past and that making a fresh start was the best thing you ever did.

Happy Running!!!

The love of many will grow cold

"Sin will be rampant everywhere, and the love of many will grow cold." Matthew 24:12 NLT

On Dec. 22, Marion Raycheba, 75, was running near her home in downtown Toronto when she encountered a cyclist riding on the sidewalk rather than in the bike lane. "I stopped and held my arm and asked him to please ride on the road," she said. And that’s when, she said, the cyclist hit her hard with the flat of his hand before striking her again with so much force that it caused her to fall to the ground. According to Toronto police spokesperson Const. David Hopkinson, the suspect then stomped on her face before fleeing, leaving Marion with serious head trauma. And her running career— which included 13 official marathons — is at least on indefinite hold. "Right now, I can’t imagine ever walking normally, let alone going for a run,” she said. Raycheba said that from what she could tell, her assailant is at the least very different from other cyclists she’s encountered. “That’s not normal behavior, even for someone who’s a sidewalk cyclist. Usually I just get (expletives) when I say please ride in the road. His manner was different, his body language was different, the rage was different. He must be mentally unbalanced, or so sore in heart and mind. That’s what’s scary. If he could do that to me, a total stranger, he could do that to another total stranger.”

And you now, as shocking as this story is, the Bible is clear that in the end days, "sin will be rampant, and the love of many will grow cold"; something that will, sadly, cause this type of erratic behavior to only escalate and become more and more common. You see, since sin separates us from God who is love, those people who delight in sin and refuse to repent of it will grow increasingly wicked to the point that they will be not only be unwilling to love others but unable to. They will love only themselves which will cause them to become easily offended and prone to fits of rage and other lawless conduct that can only be described as evil.

So be warned dear friends. As Bob Dylan once sang, "The times, they are a changin..." and not for the better I’m afraid. Keep your eyes focused on Christ and stand firm until the end.

Heavenly Father, thank You for warning us of what we can expect as we draw closer to Your return. Help us to study Your word that we might not be caught unaware or unprepared for the times ahead. Help us to stand tall and not cower under fear Lord knowing that the battle is already won and victory is Your’s. It's in Your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!!!

Let it go

"'Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest." Matthew 11:28 NLT

If you're a coffee lover like I am, the caffeinated delight is probably your go-to drink to prepare for morning runs right? But have you ever considered adding some protein powder or a shake to make it your go-to recovery drink as well? While not exactly a new idea, proffee (protein plus coffee) is seeing a massive resurgence according to Runner's World Magazine. Carissa Galloway, a registered dietitian, had this to say about it, "Consuming protein is important for keeping muscles strong and to prevent a decrease in muscle mass. Proffee can be a convenient, quick way for runners to get the protein they need after a workout and start that important recovery process." And since coffee is such a big part of many runners’ day-to-day routine—especially morning runners—the inclusion of protein feels like a no-brainer. And what runner doesn't appreciate a quick and easy way to recover from logging some miles right?

And you know, while it might be easy for a person to recover quickly from the stresses of training, recovering from hurt might not happen so fast. In fact, many Christians reading this today will be saying, "That's certainly me. I just can't seem to let it (referring to the cause of their hurt) go and it's killing me." If that's you, let me remind you that whatever that "it" is you're holding onto, "it" is keeping you from the "rest" Jesus wants to give you. Which is the very reason, He said, "Come to me..." Did you get that part? Jesus personally invites you to come to Him because He loves you. He understands your hurt, He sees your heart, He feels your pain and He knows that He is the only one that can take it from you and replace it with the true peace you so desperately desire and need.

So whatever your "it" is today and whether you've been holding on to it for a week, a year or even thirty years, it's time to let "it" go my friend. It's time to lay all those "heavy burdens" down at the foot of the Cross and be free from the weight of the hurt and pain. Won't you do that today?

Heavenly Father, thank You for personally allowing us to bring our hurts, our problems and our cares to You in exchange for the true peace and rest that only You can provide. Lord stir the heart of that person today who is holding onto something they need to let go... compel them to release it and experience life free from the burden of their pain. It's in Your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!!!

Don't follow the trend

"They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer." Acts 2:42 NIV

If you've been running long enough, you've seen many fitness trends come and go right? I know I have. Think barefoot running, wristbands, shorty shorts and sauna suits. But there's a new trend that is quite possibly even more crazy than all of those... running in deep snow wearing only socks. That's right. According to a report published yesterday, recreational runners in Finland are staying fit by training in the deep snow. The new fitness trend requires only a few layers of thick socks and allows runners to avoid gyms and other indoor sports, according to a report from Reuters. Pekka Parviainen is one such runner. The helicopter pilot told the news agency that running in the snow wearing just his socks gives him a sense of freedom -- while also being a good form of exercise. "This is traditional Finnish crazy stuff, I think we all agree," Parviainen -- who is also a barefoot runner in warmer months -- told Reuters."And it’s really the happiness side," he added. "I mean it’s very good sport, strong exercise and everything, but it really is the happiness."

And you know, when it comes to trends or the general direction in which something is developing or changing, the "online church" trend is growing. And don't get me wrong, being able to listen to and view sermons via the web was amazing when COVID kept the doors of our churches closed--and no doubt many people came to know Christ because of these online services. But the church was designed to be so much more than a one-hour a week video livestream. The church was designed to be a unified body of believers, a family, devoted to the teaching of the Word and "to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer." Why? Because that's the way we grow and mature as Christians and as a family. Physically spending time together is the only way to make that happen and is something that is especially important for new Christians to do.

So let us look to the early church in the Book of Acts who made meeting together a priority and in doing so "added to their number daily those who were being saved." And let us follow their example that the lost might not only come to know Jesus as their Savior but would mature in their faith under the love, care, instruction, and guidance of a family of believers. Meeting together is that important.

Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding us that the church needs to fellowship together regularly if we are to serve You as we should. Compel us to not forsake meeting together Lord, even more so as we see the last days approaching that we might be united as one body and one family in our mission to strengthen one another and lead the lost to You. It’s in Your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!!!

Be the light

"For this is what the Lord has commanded us: "'I have made you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.'" Acts 13:47 NIV

Adhering to my normal routine, I finished Bible study and then grabbed my headphones to listen to my favorite Christian radio station while I got dressed for my early morning run yesterday. "Oh my," I thought as I fought back tears at the news I heard over the air... GMA Gospel Music Hall of Fame member Carman died on Tuesday. Upon digesting this, I immediately messaged the announcer, Jim, who had shared it and is one of my very best friends in the world, "I did an altar call at his concert when I was a kid!!!! He’s one of the reasons I chose Christ!!" "Wow! He was instrumental in your life with God," came his reply. And as we chatted a bit more I wrote, "I’m so thankful that we know Jesus. Praise all those people God used to lead us there. May we be those people to others!!" And I loved Jim's reply, "I'm small potatoes, but I can't wait to get to Heaven to find out how many people are there with me because of the witness of Spirit FM."

And you know, while Jim may consider himself "small potatoes," he is anything but "small.” Just ask one person who came to know Christ because of something he said or did. To that person, Jim will always be remembered as someone who heeded the Lord's command to "bring salvation to the ends of the earth" starting in his little part of it; something every single Christian should be doing, especially as we see the end drawing near. Now before you think of a reason you can't do that consider this... sharing the message of salvation is a command and not a suggestion; therefore we must be the "light" that leads people to Jesus Christ wherever God has placed us using whatever platform God has given us.

So let your light shine bright my friend! Hold nothing back from serving Christ and winning souls to the foot of the Cross by the light you emit. Strive to, in the words of John Wesley, "Get on fire for God and men will come and see you burn." Can you just imagine what would happen then?

Heavenly Father, thank You for those people who are not afraid to shine their light and share the gospel with the world. Start a fire within us Lord that can’t be extinguished to be those people if we aren't already. Give us a love for our neighbor so great that it compels us to go out of the walls of the church to be the church and to win souls to the foot of the Cross. Help us to burn bright Lord! It's in Your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

BASS PRO MIDWEEK MOTIVATION -Adjust your sails

Hello runner friends!

Welcome back to the Bass Pro Fitness Series
MIDWEEK M😊TIVATI😊N blog.

Now let's get started by talking about something that you may need to do right now... "adjust your sails."

This weather! What more can I say about it right? The sub-zero wind chills, ice, heavy snow and darkness are wreaking havoc all across the United States. Maybe even on your training? I know it has on mine. If that's you today... if the wind has been let out (or frozen out) of your sails... maybe it's time to adjust them? Now that doesn't mean you won't reach your intended destination, it just means you may have to take a slightly different road than the one you had originally planned. More plainly said, at all costs maintain your desire and determination to get from point A to point B, but be willing to make a few modifications to your direct route along the way. Tony Robbins puts it this way, "Stay committed to your decisions, but stay flexible in your approach. It’s the end you’re after.”

So that being said, let's look at two ways you can still reach that "end you're after" when the winds aren't blowing in the direction you want them to--when winter running conditions won't allow you to run at your desired pace or when running outside isn't possible or even advisable. Obviously you can take your run to the treadmill. That would surely keep the wind in your sails right? But since we all know that, let's check out two other options that are tried and true.

1. The elliptical. Okay so the elliptical can't replace running outside or the treadmill but it can seriously benefit you—especially if you're injured or fatigued and it's a great option for those days when the elements make it dangerous or even impossible to get in a run outside. Lee Wraistlaw, a certified personal trainer said this in an article in Runner's World Magazine, “The elliptical can provide a lower-impact workout for runners, because you’re constantly connected to the pedals, causing less strain on the knees and joints,” That means you’ll save your lower-body joints from a lot of wear and tear—one study estimates that 80 percent of running injuries are caused by overuse. Another plus: You’re going to get a better total-body workout when using the elliptical. “Pushing and pulling the handles can provide a challenge for the upper body, plus you’re really engaging your core to balance the movements between your upper and lower body. Changing the incline and resistance settings can be a great tool for targeting different areas of the lower body.” Also, the elliptical lets you stride backward. “Pedaling in reverse can be an effective way to target the hamstrings, while increasing the incline can bring the focus to the glutes. All of these areas are important for runners to work on.”

And when it comes to the elliptical, I will say this from personal experience. Variety is good for you! Moving the body a little differently works different muscles and also helps create some balance, mentally and physically.  Everyone needs a break from running occasionally! Which makes an elliptical workout a great option when the winds shift. And if you're worried about being bored or not getting your heart rate up, throw in some intervals. For instance, add a 30 second burst of all out effort every 1-2 minutes (think fartlek style speed) that you're working out. Keep that up for an hour or so and you'll most definitely get that endorphin release your body is craving. And the occasional elliptical workouts do more than just provide a change in routine and a break from the high impact of running, the time away from running makes you appreciate it more!!!

“When something goes wrong in your life, just yell ‘Plot Twist’ and move on.” – Anonymous

2. Run for time not mileage. So this is most definitely what I did the last couple of days. With the snow several inches deep and the temperatures dangerously cold, I had a choice to make... hit the treadmill to hammer out the mileage on my training plan (something that would literally have left me bored beyond tears and longing for some time outside), or head outdoors (where I desperately wanted to be) and adjust my sails. So I chose to adjust those sails by switching things up. I determined the time it would have taken to get in my needed miles, added 30 minutes to that said time and got to work putting in some moderately slow but determined movement. I did NOT turn on my GPS watch NOR did I worry about hitting a certain number of steps. This was for pure enjoyment and to remember why I loved running so much. And guess what? This not only made me feel amazing by providing the Vitamin D my body craved, it was a fantastic calf and quad workout. I threw in some hill work on day two and my quads were blessedly sore. And guess what else this modified workout did? It put a smile on my face and joy in my heart that a workout on the treadmill never could have. It also gave me a little more grit than I had the day before; a character trait that is of priceless value to every runner and only formed from doing hard and uncomfortable things.  But I must add this disclaimer: Do not attempt outdoor workouts in freezing temperatures without the proper clothing and letting someone know your route. Safety first. I can't stress that enough.

So there you have it friends. There are so many things in this world that can't be controlled--with the wind and weather being two of those things. But there's one thing you have complete control over... how you react to the those things you can't change or control. You can take down your sails and drift to shore or you can "adjust your sails" as many times as needed to stay on course until you reach your intended destination. I don't know about you, but I've become pretty good at adjusting my sails... and have found that new adventures await me every time there's a change in the wind. As they do you. So embrace those changes that will ultimately come your way and keep moving forward with a smile on your face. You'll be so glad you did.

Happy Running!!!

Dress for the elements

"Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil." Ephesians 6:10-11 NKJV

With a real temperature of -4 and a feel like temp of -24, I knew I needed to have every part of my body covered before heading out to log some miles in the winter storm that was wreaking havoc all across the state early yesterday morning. Luckily it didn't take me long to find the clothing I needed either. Having had years of experience in dressing for the elements, I quickly put on waterproof trail shoes that could easily grip the snow and provide traction, double-lined ski pants, a long sleeve wicking shirt, a vest to keep my core warm and then a medium-weight jacket. And of course, right before heading out the door, I was sure to don a neck and face covering, a hat, some mittens, and an outer Gore-Tex shell that would trap my body's heat inside while repelling the snow, wind and cold coming at me from the outside. That may sound like a lot of work but let me tell you, it was well worth the effort. Training in every condition, I know, is the only way I can be ready for every condition come race day; training that is impossible to do without the proper gear.

And you know, when it comes to being ready to fight the ''elements" Satan will inevitably throw at us, the Bible is very clear that you and I have every piece of gear or "armor" we need to "stand against the wiles of the devil." The thing is, though, most of us aren't putting it on and are wondering why we are losing the spiritual battles taking place in our lives. You see, the devil will do everything he can to lure or entice us to sin; using every devious and cunning strategy he can find. And if the devil is successful, we will lose the battle and suffer the consequences that follow. But guess what? To "be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might," which ensures our victory, we need only put on the whole armor of God. Did you get that whole part though my friend? Every piece of armor is crucial if we are to triumph over the enemy and his schemes.

So be sure to put on the whole armor each and every day knowing the devil will come at you when you least expect it; and if there's a gap or opening in your gear, you can be sure he will find it. And remember... Satan doesn't take snow days and he never gives up. He wants to destroy you and your family, it's as simple as that. But guess what? He can't do that if you are suited up and ready. So be ready!

Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us everything we need to stand firm in the fight against our greatest enemy, the devil. Cause us to remember that he is cunning and crafty and that we can't let our guard down for even a moment. Give us a passion to pray and read the Word each and every day Lord that we might be able to suit up for the battles each day will hold. It's in Your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!!!

Be the reason someone prays with joy

"I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, " Philippians 1:3-5 NIV

As I left church yesterday morning, I had to smile even as the bitter-cold wind slapped me in the face on the way to my car. It was two degrees, the snow was blanketing the road and yet I, because of my love for the Lord and my church family, had chosen to travel the 34 miles round-trip to worship in person rather than do online services. Similarly, the day before I had opted to join my running family for a group run outside despite negative wind chill temps so low that it sent the majority of runners 'running' to the treadmill. And I wasn’t the only one crazy enough to head out Saturday. Spurred on by their love for others in the group and their mission to hold their friends accountable, a brave (some might call crazy) thirteen of us laughed and chatted as we racked up some miles while enjoying the beauty of the bitterly cold morning. It just goes to show how much power "partnerships" can play in our success.

And you know, as these two examples clearly display, having strong bonds or relationships with like-minded people really can help us to be the best we can be in so many ways, both physically and spiritually. Paul certainly understood this concept when it came to spreading the gospel; as the church at Philippi had helped him in so many ways, financially, spiritually, and emotionally. And in helping Paul, the individuals in the church had helped the cause of Christ--so much so that Paul was overcome with thankfulness every time they came to mind. In fact, the Bible tells us that Paul prayed with joy because of this "partnership in the gospel from the first day until now." He knew, without a doubt, that their friendship and support were crucial to the success of the Great Commission

So knowing there is strength in numbers, let us continually seek out ways to come alongside our brothers and sisters to help them--and in doing so help the cause of Christ. Whether it be with an encouraging word, a hug, or a hand-out, let us strive each and every day to be the reason someone can "pray with joy."

Heavenly Father, thank You for those people in our lives who come alongside us and share the load to make things easier. May we express our gratitude to them and look for ways to make things easier for others in return. Remind us Lord that we are all in this together and are so much better when we pool our time, talents and resources for the common good. It's in Your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Make the best choice

"'Physical training is good, but training for godliness is much better, promising benefits in this life and in the life to come.'" 1 Timothy 4:8 NLT

"So you want to become a runner?" That was the question posed by Tamara Markard in an article published recently in the Greeley Tribune. She went on to say, "If you’ve had the desire to rack up some mileage running but don’t know where to start, this article will give you some good tips and tricks for adding running to your workout routine." Tamara then explained that to be a runner required patience; a person must start slow with brisk walking before transitioning into a jog. "Starting slowly is especially important for people that are overweight and haven’t participated in an exercise routine for some time. Running causes an increased demand on the heart for blood supply and with clogged or hardened arteries, a heart attack can occur. So working your way from walking to running is a key component to staying safe."

And you know, when it comes to making choices that will make your life better, there is no better choice you could ever make than to become a Christian. You see, while "physical training is good," it benefits you only in this life. Accepting Jesus Christ as your Savior and "training for godliness" is infinitely better because it will benefit you both in “this life and in the life to come.” Think about it this way... you and I could spend hours in the gym each day but we will still die. We might prolong that inevitability by a few years because of an active lifestyle, but death will certainly come to us--it comes to everyone. But if you have placed your trust in Jesus, that "life to come" will be spent in paradise. Is that awesome or what?

So if you've been considering accepting Jesus Christ as your Savior and don't know where to start, can I give you a tip? Start right here and start right now by praying, "I accept You as my Savior today Jesus. I admit that I can't do this life alone anymore and I need You. I believe that You are God's Son and that You died for my sins and rose again on the third day. I confess that I'm a sinner and I need You to save me. Forgive me. Amen."

Heavenly Father, thank You for being a God who loves us despite our mess ups, mistakes and  shortcomings. Lord, if there is someone reading this that has not made the decision to follow You, I pray that today is the day they make that choice. Remind us that tomorrow and even our next breath are not guaranteed and that we will have no second chance to make that decision when our days are done. It's in Your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!!!!

We must lead the way

"But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ," Philippians 3:20 NIV

With single digit feel-like temperatures and freezing drizzle, yesterday's early morning run would not have been possible without the Gor-Tex jacket I was wearing that not only repelled everything winter had to throw at me but kept me toasty warm. So warm and protected, in fact, that I found myself thinking, "Who invented this amazing substance that thousands of people around the world count on to 'get the job done'"? After a quick Google search later that day, I soon had my answer. Robert W. Gore was born on April 15, 1937, died on September 17, 2020 and will be forever remembered as "A Pioneer" because of the life he lived. What exactly is a pioneer you might ask? Among other things, a pioneer is someone who is a trailblazer and the first to do something. It's also someone who forges a path for others to follow to lead them into new territory. By definition then, a pioneer is someone who is always on the move, anxious to lead the way, and unwilling to settle down.

And you know, we as Christians should remember that we are pioneers as well. You see, the Bible is very clear that "our citizenship is heaven" and not on this earth. That means you and I are merely passing through on our way to the new territory the Lord promised we would inhabit for eternity. But along this journey, you and I have work to do. And that work is to lead the way for the lost to come to know the Savior we so “eagerly await.” But guess what? Doing this requires action! To lead someone to Jesus Christ means you and I must become unsettled and move our feet. We must step out of our comfort zones and hit the streets.

So knowing that our Lord is coming soon, may you and I make the decision to be trailblazers today! May we waste no time in taking hold of every opportunity we are given to go out and share the Good News the world so desperately needs to hear. I don't know about you my friend but this revelation has me shouting, "Let revival start right here! Let revival start right now! And let revival start with me!" What say you?

Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding us that we are not to be settlers on this earth but pioneers who work tirelessly to blaze a path for the lost to follow that they might come to know You as their Savior. Lord, fill us with an urgency and boldness that we cannot quench--an urgency and boldness that compels us to go out and fulfill the Great Commission. It's in Your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

BASS PRO MIDWEEK MOTIVATION-The Start Over Club

Hello runner friends!
Welcome back to the Bass Pro Fitness Series
MIDWEEK M😊TIVATI😊N blog.

Now let's get started by talking about a club that you just might want to be a part of... a club that will motivate you to brush the dirt off your failed goal(s) and try once more. The Start Over Club. What exactly is this club? It's a group of individuals of all ages, sizes, shapes, and fitness levels who have decided to give it another shot, to forgo throwing in the towel, and to pick themselves up and start over again after one failed attempt or one hundred of them. It's a group that views failures as not only learning experiences but wonderful opportunities to discover better ways of doing something.

What does this "club" look like in real life? Well, consider the words of Benjamin Franklin who was most definitely a member of the Start Over Club, "I didn't fail the test, I just found a hundred ways to do it wrong." And Thomas Edison, also a proud member, who was quoted as saying, "I didn't fail. I just found 2,000 ways not to make a light bulb. I only needed to find one way to make it work." Both of these pioneers didn't stop until they succeeded in what they had set out to do... and neither should you.

And now consider the words of my friend, Thea Levine, a runner and athlete. But first consider that Thea is participating in a 75-day program that takes a person back to day one if they miss even one of the daily requirements. She is determined to finish this program no matter how long it takes or how many attempts it takes to do it, "Selfie of me at 4am when I realized my noxgear battery was dead but needed to get my outdoor run in. Day one (so incredibly embarrassing to admit I’m starting over for the third time). Anyway, here’s to all my fellow peeps in the start over club!!"

Do you just love Thea's attitude or what? I know I do. In fact, I was so inspired by her grit and tenacity that I reached out to her and asked, "Can you just kind of tell me about the other times when you had to start over? And also why it was important that you started over and did not quit. What is it that keeps you motivated to keep pressing on? And obviously you view failures as only stepping stones. Can you elaborate on that?" And this is what she said....

It would be easy for me to blame my do overs on the stress of life, the changes that are out of my control, or even my inability to not act out of pure impulse. However, I am tired of hearing my own excuses. We all have stress, we all have so many changes out of our control, and we can all let impulsivity take over. I think it comes down to my ability to choose me. To choose myself, my health, my happiness first. The first time I restarted was my 40th birthday, great excuse, right? The second time was me in a layer of self-pity that I wrapped around myself about some of the changes in my life. Each time, after I caved or “mistakenly” forgot to do my second work out I spent time truly debating on just pushing forward vs starting over. Each time, I realized I owe it to myself and my journey to do this honestly and successfully. I know I’ll succeed. I don’t know when, I don’t know how many more restarts I may have, nor do I care, because I know I will. I started this journey to be a better version of myself, as cliché as that sounds, it’s true. I want to be a role model to my children and accomplish the goals that I have set for myself. I am a proud member of the restart club but I’m ok with that because it means I didn’t give up and I won’t quit!!

And if that weren't enough to inspire you to join the "start over club," check out some of these quotes about not giving up.

“How long should you try? Until.” ―Jim Rohn

"Most of the important things in the world have been accomplished by people who have kept on trying when there seemed to be no hope at all.” ―Dale Carnegie

"Never give up, for that is just the place and time that the tide will turn.” ―Harriet Beecher Stowe

"You do what you can for as long as you can, and when you finally can’t, you do the next best thing. You back up but you don’t give up.” ―Chuck Yeager

"Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.” ―Thomas Edison

"If you fall behind, run faster. Never give up, never surrender, and rise up against the odds.” ―Jesse Jackson

And my personal favorite? “You just can’t beat the person who won’t give up.” ―Babe Ruth

So there you have it friends. If at first you don't succeed, try and try again. And if you still haven't succeeded, try and try again once more. And if you fail again? Try again. Never, ever, ever stop trying!! After all, being one of those "peeps" in Thea's "start over club," gives you Rock Star status in my book. So to all of my fellow peeps (yes, I'm a proud member too) in the "start over club," here's another shout out... "You rock!! Keep killing it!"

Live to please the One who enlisted you

"A soldier refrains from entangling himself in civilian affairs, in order to please the one who enlisted him." 2 Timothy 2:4 CSB

"Go Rebecca Ito!! Man you have stepped out of your comfort zone!! Early mornings, hills, cold and ultras!!!! Your friends are a bad influence on you." These were the words I jokingly wrote upon seeing my friend's post that included a picture of her bundled up from head to toe doing a 45-minute cold outdoor workout as part of a 75-day challenge she had embarked on several weeks ago. Less than two years earlier, Rebecca had not been very active at all. But after meeting a group of healthy-minded people that soon became friends, Rebecca was inspired and motivated by them to make positive lifestyle changes. Changes that included doing things she once despised like getting up regularly for early morning runs, running hills on purpose, braving the cold and elements for workouts she could easily complete inside, and even training for and completing her first ultra marathon. You could definitely say then that Rebecca's new circle of friends have had a positive influence on her.

And you know, the right group of friends will not only influence us to stay focused on our fitness goals, the right group of friends--those that wholeheartedly share the mission of serving Christ--will help us stay focused on living in such a way that "the one who enlisted" us is pleased. You see, the moment you and I chose to follow Jesus, we not only became soldiers in His army but joined countless others who made the same choice; soldiers that purposely and tenaciously refrain "from entangling" themselves "in civilian affairs" and keep their eyes, minds, wills and ears focused on their Commanding Officer. These are the friends that are much more than friends; they are comrades or fellow soldiers united for the purpose of joining us in the fight to see God's kingdom come and His will be done--and these are the friends that every Christian soldier must have if they are to stand strong and follow the Lord.

So thank God today for those Christian brothers and sisters that are "enlisted" alongside you, vow to live worthy of the title of soldier and remember, in the words of J.C. Ryle, "The true Christian is called to be a soldier and must behave as such from the day of his conversion to the day of his death. He is not meant to live a life of religious ease, indolence and security. He must never imagine for a moment that he can sleep and doze along the way to heaven, like one traveling in an easy carriage."

Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us comrades to join us in the battle to stay faithful, fight the good fight, and finish the race having lived worthy of being called a soldier in the army of Jesus Christ. Lord help us to understand how important it is for us to align ourselves with those who share the mission to serve You that we might strengthen one another and never shrink back from our duties. It's in Your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Things aren’t always as they seem

“So the Lord saved Hezekiah and the people of Jerusalem from the hand of Sennacherib king of Assyria and from the hand of all others. He took care of them on every side.” 2 Chronicles 32:22 NIV

As I do nearly every weekend, I woke up early Saturday morning, read my Bible as I drank a cup of coffee, and then headed to the park for a run with friends. And keeping to routine, I further prepared myself for the day and miles ahead by turning on praise and worship music from my favorite Christian radio station on my drive. But as I turned the dial up and then up some more and then up even more, I became concerned. “Oh my,” I thought to myself. “Am I going deaf? I can hardly hear this. I guess after all those years of using headphones, I’m losing my hearing.” But then a divine thought occurred to me... check the speaker settings. “Oh yes!” I thought remembering that my son, Luke, had recently borrowed my vehicle while his car was in the shop. And sure enough, that’s what it was. He had set it so only the speakers in the back were working. So just like that.. with a few pushes of the buttons, full sound was restored and I was singing along with the radio once again.

And you know, this story just goes to show that things aren’t always as they seem. Things aren’t always as hopeless as we think they are; especially when the Lord is on our side. Consider the story of King Hezekiah. He was seemingly surrounded on all sides by King Sennacherib of Assyria. And not only was this wicked and ungodly king taunting the people of Judah and ridiculing the Lord but making every attempt to persuade the people of Judah to doubt that the God who had saved them countless times before could save them this time. But as God is perfect at doing, He quickly and easily turned the tables by sending “an angel, who annihilated all the fighting men and the commanders and officers in the camp of the Assyrian king.” Just like that, “the Lord saved Hezekiah and the people of Jerusalem from the hand of Sennacherib king of Assyria and from the hand of all others.”

Perhaps you’re in a situation today that appears hopeless and has you doubting God’s power to “turn the tables?” If that’s you, look up my friend. Place your trust in the Lord and allow Him to do only what God can do.... turn a hopeless situation into one you can sing about!

Heavenly Father, thank You for showing us time and time again that You are the Supreme Ruler over EVERY situation. Remind us today Lord that you are God with a capital G and not the little and powerless god of our enemy. You are all powerful and there’s NOTHING that You cannot do. It’s in Your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!!!

God is forever faithful

" Know therefore that the Lord your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations," Deuteronomy 7:9 ESV

On February 4, 2012, I posted the following according to Facebook, "Getting so excited and nervous about tomorrow's Marathon. Low of 32 and a high of 50. They are bussing us 4.5 miles up the mountain at 5:30 am to begin race at 7. Its gonna be a cold and dark wait. But I won't be alone. I have my running buddy with me. He's also my personal trainer and best friend. Looking forward to running with you Jesus." And I can't even begin to tell you how much this memory made me smile. So many things have changed since that day. My teenage son is now a man and living on his own, my daughter is a sophomore in high school and I am no longer a stay-at-home mom but a working one. But some things, thank God, haven't changed. I'm still running marathons and my "Running Buddy" is still with me. He is still my "Personal Trainer" and is and always will be my very "Best Friend" in the whole world. God was faithful to me then. He is faithful to me now. And I know that He will be faithful to me until the end of time.

And you know what? God isn't only faithful to me. He is faithful to all "those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations." And if you're doubting that, consider this... the book of Deuteronomy was written around 1406 BC. That's a long time ago right? But during those thousands of years and all those generations between the time that verse was written and today, God has NEVER failed to keep any of His promises. Not even one! And you can be sure that He never will. In fact, you can read the Bible a million times and never find one promise that our Lord did NOT keep!. Each new sunrise is proof of that; despite our shortcomings, the Lord still loves us and always will.

So if you're feeling as if God doesn't know or care about what you're going through today, think again my friend. The "Faithful God... keeps covenant and steadfast love" with you, with me, and with all who believe upon His holy name. So look up brothers and sisters, He is faithful and He is coming back soon.

Heavenly Father, thank You for being faithful to us when we are anything but faithful to You and for loving us when we are totally unlovable. Lord, for that person who doubts that You are real or that You care, I pray that they would feel Your presence today in a way that they never have. Help us to be bold in sharing the Message of Your faithfulness to the world. It's in Your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

God can make it all good

"And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them." Romans 8:28 NLT

On January 24, my 69-year-old running friend and retired veteran, Sid Busch, posted, "Heck of a day so far. I tripped in the dark walking to the start line, cracked a rib, in hospital waiting to be treated. Sure can use prayers right now." "Oh no!" I thought to myself as I read his words and immediately began to pray. Thankfully though, Sid had good news to give all his friends and followers this week when he wrote, "I continue to improve, ribs hurt a lot less than a week ago... I've stopped taking oxycodone and use a lot less Ibuprofen. Walking has really helped me, I take deeper breaths which helps me from getting pneumonia plus I am not getting totally out of shape. Only problem I have while walking is I see someone running and I have to hold myself back from starting to run, lol. If there is a silver lining to this, it's my knees haven't felt this good in years." Do you just love that or what?

And you know, if a silver lining can be defined as an advantage that comes from a difficult or unpleasant situation, there was indeed a silver lining in Sid's misfortune. The unexpected time off from running allowed his knees to have some much-needed healing time. Isn't our God good like that though? He is always using our trials to bring about good in our lives. In fact, the Bible gives believers the assurance that "God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them." Did you get that everything part? That means the good, the bad and the downright ugly. And this is something "we know" because we know that God keeps His promises.

So if you're going through the fire right now, hang tight my friend. I know it may be hard to understand or even fathom how God can bring good out of your situation but He can. It may not be immediate but it will happen. Trust Him as you wait and prepare yourself to look back on this difficult and trying time one day and say with a smile on your face, "Thank You for what I went through Lord. I didn't understand it then but I do now and I know that I am so much better for having gone through it."

Heavenly Father, thank You for promising to take all our pain, afflictions, troubles and trials and use them for our good and for Your glory. Lord, when we can't see how this could possibly happen, cause us to turn to Your word and read about the saints who have gone before us. Their testimonies prove that You can be trusted in every situation no matter how hopeless, desperate, bleak or impossible it appears. It's in Your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

BASS PRO MIDWEEK MOTIVATION-Do not stop

Hello runner friends!
Welcome back to the Bass Pro Fitness Series
MIDWEEK M😊TIVATI😊N blog.

Now let's get started by talking about strategies to help you stay motivated when you're not seeing any results.

Okay, so if you've been doing really, really good with your training plan and have been motivated by the results you’ve been seeing over the past few weeks or months. But now, as happens over time, you have hit a plateau; something that has stopped you from seeing any results at all. And something that has you frustrated to the point that you're now considering throwing your hands up in the air and shouting, "I quit!"  If that's you today, I beg you to reconsider that decision and consider the words of Confucius who said,  "It does not matter how slowly you go, as long as you do not stop."

So what does that mean for you exactly? It means, stop looking for quick results!! You won't be getting them anymore. The biggest gains in any fitness plan are usually gained at the start of that plan and then expounded on little by little. Think of it this way, if you were a house under construction, the foundation has been laid, your frame has been built, the walls are up, the shingles are on the roof and the windows have been installed--and all the while it was being done, you and those around you were saying, "Well, would you look at that? That project is really coming along quickly." And while that project, aka you, might indeed have been coming along at a rapid pace, the house is FAR from being finished; you are FAR from being finished. In fact, for all intents and purposes, that house isn't even able to be lived in yet. It still needs flooring, appliances, paint, curtains, furniture, and so much more. Are you getting the picture? All these things take time to install which means, from the outside, it appears as if the construction has stopped. But it hasn't..... unless you quit!

So in an effort to motivate you to keep pressing on (after all you've already done so much!), I encourage you to check out these five strategies that might be just what you need to regain your motivation and/or keep it. And remember... "It does not matter how slowly you go, as long as you do not stop."

1
. Eliminate procrastination. The definition of procrastination is putting off or delaying something. Which means when you're procrastinating, you're not moving!!! That means you're not even going slow, you've stopped altogether. A house will NEVER be built if you procrastinate. Consider this... even if you're moving as slow as a turtle in peanut butter, you'll still be seeing results; they may be small and long fought but you'll still see them. For instance, let's just pretend that your goal is to paint the kitchen in this new home you're building. If you procrastinate, it will NEVER get done. But if you apply just one stroke of paint from a small brush on a wall each day, the wall will eventually be finished and you can move on to the next wall. When that wall is finished after applying just one stroke of paint from a small brush each day, you can move on to the next wall and the next. See where I’m going with this? What you’re doing may be slow going, but it's going nonetheless! Do some type of movement every day and you'll be amazed at the results that occur slowly over time.

2. Go for a short run. I don't even care if it's just around the block. Get out there for 15 minutes. And if you're more of a walker than a runner, pick up the pace and speed walk as briskly as you can for that set time and not one second shorter. Just get your blood pumping and your mind intent on seeing those 900 seconds go down. This does two things. First, it reminds you that you are in charge--you control what you do and you have the power to make the decision to override those thoughts saying, "I don't feel like doing anything today," or "I'm just too tired." By the time you truly realize what you've done, the endorphins will most likely have kicked in and you might even want to go further. If nothing else, you might get lucky and get lost. This will kick in your survival skills and gain you more movement time as you make your way back to the couch.

3. Visit a few "Open Houses." What do I mean by that? Check out what other successful people are doing or have done. Watch motivational videos and read books by people who have overcome the habits or mindsets that are keeping you from reaching your goals. Surround yourself with positive people who refuse to stand still and you'll be absolutely amazed at the changes in your life. After all, good "builders" never stop building and they will encourage you to do the same.

4. Try something new. Or two something news. Start with finding a new place to workout. For real, sometimes a change of scenery is just what a person needs to recharge their passion to crush their goals. There's just something about being in a new place that re"news" our attitudes. And here's a good one... find an audio book, YouTube video or really long podcast that interests you. Then make a deal with yourself that you can ONLY listen to it when you are moving. That surely might get you off the couch when the plot gets good.

5. Practice gratitude. For real, this works! Sometimes people forget that movement of any kind is not only medicine as it has the power to heal and strengthen the mind, body and soul but that movement is a gift from God. But not everyone has this gift! While it is today and you have the ability to walk or run, be thankful. Express those feelings out loud, sing about them even! The joy gratitude puts in a person's heart gives energy like nothing else can. It's crazy but it's true!

So there you have it friends. Every person striving to get fit or stay fit will experience plateaus and moments where it feels like nothing is happening. This is totally normal. But it's also totally the time when you need to dig deep and keep building on that fitness foundation you've worked so hard to erect and establish. You've come this far, don't quit now!! Keep moving... even it it's at a snail's pace knowing that each step forward is one step closer to seeing the project, aka the person you want to be, completed. You can do this if you just don't stop!

Happy Running!!!
