This too Shall Pass

This too Shall Pass

"For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.  So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen in temporary, but what is unseen is eternal."  2 Corinthians 4:17-18

Did you know the exact phrase, "this too shall pass" is not actually in the bible?  Maybe you did but I didn't. My grandmother said it, my mother says it and I say it.   According to ask.com, Jewish folklore often describes Solomon as giving or receiving the phrase.  As it was in my family, the phrase was simply passed down over time from one generation to the next.  The phrase also appears in the works of Persian Sufi poet, Attar of Nishapur. He records the fable of a powerful king who asked assembled wise men to create a ring that would make him happy when he was sad, and sad when he was happy  After deliberation the men handed him a simple ring with the words "This too will pass" etched on it.

I was looking at my children last night, watching them laugh, welling up with such an intense love that almost brought me to tears.  How I longed for them to be little again.  "This too shall pass," I thought. Ah....the phrase that can turn happiness to sadness.  I think of that often as I yearn to capture every moment and store it away for when this time is no more.  And then I awoke to the troubles of the day, the pain in my body from overtraining and the doubts that came with it. "This too shall pass, " I reminded myself.  God's will be done.  And, in that moment, the sadness turned to happiness.

No matter what is going on in your life, you can be certain of one thing.  Time does not stand still for any of us.  You will get older and your circumstances will change for better or for worse.   And life will remind you that most of these things are out of your control.  Thank God that one thing is for certain though, "For our light and monetary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory,"  and 1 John 2:17, tells us that" The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God will live forever."

God never promised us an easy life, "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world, you will have trouble.  But take heart!  I have overcome the world.",  John 16:33.   But He did promise to be with us through it all, "And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."  Matthew 28:20.

As you live your life today and every day, remember "this too shall pass."  In the good times, rejoice.  In the hard times, be patient in faith knowing that God is with you always, to the very end of the age.

Heavenly Father, thank you for the times of happiness in our lives when we can praise you for your wonders. And thank you for the times of tests and trials when we can praise you for your presence.  Thank you mostly for being with us through it all. In your precious name Jesus, Amen.
