BASS PRO MIDWEEK MOTIVATION-Get Some Skin in the Game

Hello runner friends!
Welcome back to the Bass Pro Fitness Series
MIDWEEK M😊TIVATI😊N blog!

Now let’s get started by talking about the crazy weather we’ve been having and the havoc it’s wreaking on a lot of people’s training schedules. From double-digit sub-zero temperatures to ice storms and snow, you might be saying, “I’m having a hard time getting motivated again.” If that’s you, I have some great advice… get some skin in the game.

In other words, pick a race and get signed up for it. Then develop a formal training program to follow. Having a personal investment in an undertaking, and therefore a vested interest in your success (aka having skin in the game) will keep you motivated to get in your workouts regardless of the obstacles in your way. On a side note… I’ve found that the more money you lay down and the more people you make yourself accountable to, the greater your motivation will be to complete your goal.

This was something I stressed to the newest Couch to 5k class I have the blessing of teaching (I teach 3-4 of these 6-week classes each year) last week. As is my norm, I have the participants commit first to completing the training and then the 3.1 mile race we host for them immediately following the culmination of the class. I then urge them to sign up for another run so they have ‘skin in the game’ and will stay motivated to make running or walking a lifetime routine. After all, regular exercise and healthy eating are habits worth cultivating and maintaining over a lifetime because of the many benefits they provide.

So no matter where you are in your fitness journey, if your motivation is lacking, get signed up for a race. But not just any race. Check out the Bass Pro Fitness Series of events. From the 5k to the marathon, Bass Pro has something for everyone, including trail running. Fitness Series events and programs are designed to include activities for people of all ages, backgrounds, fitness levels and areas of interest.  Proceeds from the Fitness Series are shared with local charities that align with the mission of the Bass Pro Shops Fitness Series and our Bass Pro Shops giving pillars. Registration opens up soon so be ready! Meanwhile, check out some local runs and races and register for them so that your goals will look like a staircase that you continue to climb in your quest to become better.

So there you have it friends. It’s worth the time, effort, and money it takes to not only keep up your motivation but to grow it. After all, we only continue to get better when we continue to challenge ourselves, right? Which is the very reason I hope to see you out there at group runs and races this year and especially at Bass Pro 2024!
Happy Running!
