On Pace

"Search for the LORD and for his strength; continually seek him." Psalm 105:4

"Are you on pace?" asked the volunteer directing the marathoners to go left yesterday at the Joplin Mother Road Marathon where I was a pacer. Knowing instantly that he was referring to whether I was on track to get the runners following me to the finish line in the advertised time printed on the pacer stick I was carrying, I quickly glanced at my Garmin, smiled and cheerfully replied, "Yes." You see, checking my GPS watch continually (every few seconds or so) had been crucial in reaching this 17 mile check-point on time and would be even more critical in staying consistent as the miles wore on.

And while these Global Positioning devices are great for quickly notifying runners when they have gotten off pace so they can readjust their stridethey can only do so when they are examined constantly. Likewise, the same can be said of our walk with Christ-the success of which is directly determined by how frequently we look to Him for guidance. The Psalmist knew that full well when he urged us to "continually seek him." And if anyone knew the importance of doing that and how easy it was to go off course when not keeping their eyes on God (even for a moment), it was King David.

You see, if David had been "continually", or unceasingly, looking to the Lord for guidance, he would have known that he had gotten off pace the moment he set his eyes on Bathsheba and could have immediately adjusted his stride and prevented the consequences that followed. Knowing that, may you and I learn from his mistake today and vow to "continually seek him" that we might not repeat it.

Heavenly Father, thank you for your Word that allows us to find you and know your ways. Help us, through prayer and Bible study, to continually seek you and your will for our lives. May there never be a moment when we take our eyes off you. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!!!

I need you God - Consumed by Fire
