It's called Christmas

"For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." Isaiah 9:6

Run Santa Run, Rudolph Fun Run, Reindeer Romp, Jingle Bell 5k, Running of the Elves and the Holiday Hustle were just a few of the top 2015 "holiday" runs across the country this month listed by active.com, one of the country's largest online race registration companies. Names like this, combined with the billboards of "Happy Holidays" everywhere I've gone to shop or stop, makes me feel like shouting "It's called Christmas!"

Amidst the wrapping, lights and decorations, have we somehow forgotten the true reason for the approaching celebration? Have we forgotten what Christmas is really about? Approximately 700 years before the birth of our Savior, the prophet Isaiah wrote,  "For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." This was to be no ordinary birth. Can you imagine the hopeful anticipation the Israelites must have felt? The Savior was going to be born and there would be more cause for celebration than at any other time in the history of the world!

As we prepare to celebrate the birth of our Savior and King, may we too be overwhelmed with joy and anticipation of the coming celebration. And may we boldly exclaim "Merry Christmas" to others as we anxiously await that blessed morning.

Heavenly Father, thank you for sending Jesus, the Savior of the world, to be born as flesh, to live among us and to die for our sins. May we prepare our hearts to celebrate the most wonderful day in the history of the world, the day that changed everything. And may there be no mistaking what it is we are celebrating and it's not merely a happy holiday. It's called Christmas with a Capital C. It's in your precious name we pray, Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!!!
