Avoid stumbling

"When you walk, your steps will not be hampered; when you run, you will not stumble." Proverbs 4:12

I have yet to meet a runner (especially one who runs trails) that has not fallen at least once. Sometimes it's due to stepping the wrong way or hitting a rock. Other times from being too tired and shuffling one's feet. Whatever the cause, stumbling is an inevitable part of logging miles. Wouldn't it be great to run and never stumble though? Unfortunately, in the world of running, that's not a possibility. But God gives us instruction on how not to stumble in our walk with Him. Wisdom is the key, "I instruct you in the way of wisdom and lead you along straight paths...Hold on to instruction, do not let it go; guard it well for it is your life." Proverbs 4:11-13. If instruction is life, and wisdom leads us along straight paths, the key to avoid stumbling is to carefully and daily read God's word.

Proverbs 4:26-27 further tells us how to avoid the pitfalls that may cause us to falter, "Give careful thought to the paths for your feet and be steadfast in all your ways. Do not turn to the right or to the left; keep your foot from evil". In other words, think about what you're doing before you do it. If it's not in line with God's word, avoid it at all costs - if it is, do it without waver and/or compromise. Stay focused on Christ and His will for your life - avoid a second glance at what the world offers you. Keep your foot from evil - notice it doesn't say feet? If you let one foot in, the other will follow. Don't get sidetracked on detours that may lead to sin. Be steadfast in all your ways!

"The path of the righteous is like the morning sun, shining ever brighter till the full light of day." Proverbs 4:18. It's not hard to find the right path, God's word and instruction is there "like the morning sun shining ever brighter". The hard part is making the decision to trust and follow Him. The harder part is letting go of your plans to follow His. If you're on a route today that isn't leading you to eternal life, maybe it's time to change the one navigating it? It's your decision, and only yours... you can choose to follow Christ and let Him "lead you along straight paths" or go your own way and let the world lead you in the other direction.

Heavenly Father, I pray that today we would all choose to let You lead us along the straight path. Following you doesn't guarantee us a life free from trouble but it does mean that we have a personal God who will instruct and guide us along the way, through this life,  to keep us from stumbling. Thank You for loving us so much that You would be with us every step. In your precious name we pray Jesus, Amen.

Happy Running!!!
