Avoid complacency

"For the turning away of the simple will slay them, And the complacency of fools will destroy them;" Proverbs 1:32 NKJV

On August 22, Mark Hartree, 53, was running with a friend on a public trail in the Pentland Hills Regional Park just outside of Edinburgh, Scotland when he saw cows on the path. There was a couple there and a family all trying to get past them, he said, so he began shooing the cows away. "That's when I saw there were calves. They all ran away apart from one mother. She was mooing a lot and then all of a sudden she ran at me and hit me in the chest, which knocked me off my feet and I hit my head on a wall." The cow continued the attack until Mark was finally able to get over a fence. And although doctors say he will make a full recovery, Mark said, "I was in shock afterwards, it was traumatic, and the moral of the story is don't be complacent with cows."

And you know, while you and I should most definitely avoid being complacent around cows or any other animal that has the propensity to harm us, we would do well to avoid complacency in all areas of our lives. Why? Because being complacent or apathetic, careless, and nonchalant will cause us to have a smug sense of self-satisfaction (believing we have no room for improvement and are okay just as we are), which will in turn cause us to turn away from instruction and ignore the dangers of disobedience. In fact, the Bible tells us that "the complacency of fools will destroy them" and "the turning away of the simple will slay them." In other words, the consequences of rejecting wisdom by "turning away" from it time and again are physical harm and spiritual death.

So don't be a fool my friend. Heed the instruction found in the Word and welcome God's discipline and advice daily. Doing so will not only keep you from becoming complacent and falling into sin but will keep you from the unnecessary pain, grief and suffering that always accompanies it.

Heavenly Father, thank You for warning us of the dangers of complacency. Help us to keep a humble view of ourselves that we might recognize our continual need for discipline and spiritual growth so that we would be open to your guidance and correction. Help us to always follow You. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!!!
