Remember His faithfulness

“And you shall remember the whole way that the Lord your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, that he might humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep his commandments or not.” Deuteronomy 8:2 ESV

In a timely article titled “The Top Nutrition Stories of 2022 and What They Can Teach You for the New Year,” published by Runner’s World Wednesday, the writer said: As the year comes to an end, it’s always helpful to carve out some time to reflect on what worked well and what didn’t in 2022. In terms of running performance, maybe that means reviewing your run times, workout schedule, and sleep routine. One thing it should also include: analyzing your nutrition strategy. Throughout the year, Runner’s World editors and writers spend countless hours researching and exploring nutrition trends, advice, and the best ways to fuel performance so you can take your health and mileage to the next level. While we learned to avoid certain eating habits this year (ahem, like the watermelon diet), we’ve also discovered effective ways to optimize your nutrition for the new year.

And you know, when it comes to carving out time to reflect on what ‘worked well’ in 2022, you and I would do well to make time to remember the many times God was faithful to us in the past so we can continue to trust Him today, tomorrow and in the new year. You see, one command God often gave the Israelites was: “Remember.” And this same command applies to us so that we, like the Israelites, can learn through our own history that God has never failed us.

So make it a priority in 2023 to intentionally remember all the ways God has provided for you and delivered you in the past my friend. This will allow you to trust Him no matter what the future holds.

Heavenly Father, thank You for being a God that we can always trust. Cause us to remember that You have never left a promise unfulfilled throughout history and You won’t start now. Give us a hunger for your Word this year Lord so that we can grow in our knowledge of You. It’s in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Strive to be a hero

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.’” Joshua 1:9 NIV

In an article titled “Pastor donates kidney to parishioner, running buddy” posted Monday by WSBTV, it was reported that Cobb County Pastor James Slick donated his kidney to his friend Jack Abbott, a once avid runner who served as the course director for the Peachtree Road Race until 2019. Now a little over a year later, Abbott and Slick are back to doing what they love, crossing finish lines together. Dr. Clark Kensinger, a multi-organ transplant surgeon with Piedmont Healthcare, said stories like Abbott and Slick’s inspire people to make similar sacrifices.“When donors or potential donors hear these stories, it really makes an impact on being able to find as many patients as possible to come forward for you to potentially be a donor,” Kensinger said. “We are forever grateful for how much of a sacrifice they make to save another person’s life through kidney transplantation, so they are truly heroes”

And you know, when it comes to being a hero or person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding qualities, or noble qualities, the Bible gives us the story of Joshua who was a hero of the faith. Though he had seen the giants of the land of Canaan, Joshua heeded God’s command to “be strong and courageous” and stood strong in his belief that God would deliver that land into the hand of the Israelites, even when nearly all others were against him. And because of his extreme courage, faith and godly lifestyle, others were influenced to live for God as well. Do you just love that or what?

So strive to be a hero to someone today my friend. Have the courage to do whatever it is God is calling you to, no matter how frightening it might seem, remembering that “God will be with you wherever you go.” Your fearless action will not only benefit that person but encourage others to be courageous and self sacrificial as well, which will undoubtedly influence the lost to seek Christ.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the many heroes like Joshua and Pastor Slick that serve as examples of what it means to love others enough to take action. Help us to live lives marked by courage as well Lord so that others would be inspired to do the same. It’s in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

BASS PRO MIDWEEK MOTIVATION - Work on your Weaknesses in 2023

Hello runner friends!
Welcome back to the Bass Pro Fitness Series
MIDWEEK M😊TIVATI😊N blog!

Now let's get started by talking about the obvious. 2022 is almost over and runners all over the world are gearing up for 2023 by making New Year's Resolutions. Perhaps you're one of them? If you are, then you most likely have some of the most common resolutions written down already as well as a plan to achieve them. Perhaps your list includes one or all of these:

  • Run Faster
  • Run Farther
  • Stay Injury Free
  • Run a Consistent Pace
But have you ever considered adding, "Work on my weaknesses" to that list? After all, whether you’ve been running for five months or five years, chances are you have a few weaknesses. And identifying where you need to put in some additional work will naturally make you a better all around runner. And shouldn't that be every runners overall 2023 goal? So in light of that, check out some examples of weaknesses you may possess and a few tips to turn them into strengths:
  • A lack of flexibility
  • Lack of strength
  • Prone to injury
  • Running up hills
  • Running downhill
  • Inconsistency when it comes to diet or exercise

Pick

As you can see, there are many, many possible weaknesses a runner can have. The best way to turn them into strengths is to pick one or two weaknesses (maximum) at a time and slowly work on them (you don’t want to overwhelm yourself as this may result in a lack of motivation and drive down the line). For instance, addressing your current lack of strength with weekly running-specific gym sessions will not only make you a faster runner, but it will also reduce your risk of injury. Before you know it, you’ll be a stronger athlete and may even enjoy running that little bit more. That is, of course, if you don’t already love it…

Periodize

Devise, or periodize, a plan that breaks your training into segments that have periods within the training cycle that can be spent addressing and working on your weakness with time to come back to your strengths. Just like a marathoner periodizes their training block into a base phase, strength/endurance phase, speed, and finally a taper, taking a deep dive into how to make one of your weaknesses a strength may take more than just small additions to workouts. Make sure you always come back to training your strengths well ahead of your key races so that you’re at peak fitness and as strong, mentally and physically, as possible.

Prioritize

And finally, some of us just don’t spend enough time training our bodies to do what we expect them to do. Sometimes the best way to get better is to put in a little hard work and time. We may not have much of the latter, but I’m betting most of us can all squeeze a few more minutes of training into our week if we want it bad enough. Prioritize what's important to you by doing it first and you're sure to see success. Schedule in your workouts.

I know it’s pretty simple, but sometimes it takes some reminding that our strengths are usually what got us to where we are in the first place. They’re the reason we enjoy certain workouts, races or trails. Take some time to focus on the weaknesses, but remember, the fun often lies in where we’re strongest. And that's the reward for working on the weaknesses. The strengths become stronger and all the more enjoyable.

So there you have it friends. Working on your weaknesses, is a great resolution to add to that list you're making. As are these 2023 resolutions:
  • Sign up for the Bass Pro Half Marathon of full.
  • Sign up for the Dogwood Canyon trail run.
  • Join the training groups that begin in July.
  • Volunteer at one of the 2023 Bass Pro events.

One more thing friends... don't get so set on achieving your running resolutions that you forget to have fun with it or forget what a blessing it is to be able to get out there and log some miles. After all, the majority of us aren't paying the rent with our winnings but simply challenging ourselves to be better while making new friends. So strive to be the best you can be in 2023 but make it your top goal to have fun along the way! You'll be so glad you did.

HAPPY RUNNING!

Seek Him Early

A Psalm of David when he was in the wilderness of Judah. O God, You are my God; Early will I seek You; My soul thirsts for You; My flesh longs for You In a dry and thirsty land Where there is no water. Psalm 63:1 NKJV

In an article titled, “Daily Tips That Will Help You Through the 2022 Holiday Run Streak” published by Runner’s World yesterday, the number one tip offered by the experts for completing the 39-day one-mile-a-day challenge was to make a commitment. The writer went on to say: Committing to something is less about having time and more about setting priorities,” as Nicole Detling, Ph.D., mental performance coach and author of Don’t Leave Your Mind Behind: The Mental Side of Performance previously told Runner’s World. So, as you kick off your run streak, think about the best time to fit your daily mile into your schedule. Is it right when you get up, during a midday lunch break, after work, or somewhere in between? No matter when you do it, it’s always smart to mark it down on your calendar so you block off the time, too.

And you know, while finding the best time to fit your daily mile in is a great way to increase your physical health, finding the best time to fit in your Bible study (aka “training for godliness”) reaps spiritual health “ benefits in this life and in the life to come.” David certainly understood this and so said, “ Early will I seek You…” because he knew it was important to spend time with the Lord before doing anything else. You see, what we do first shows what’s important to us. Not only that, the instruction, edification, encouragement, and insight we receive from the living Word each morning will build us up, light our path and change the way we live.

So seek the Lord early my friend. Commit to making time with Him your number one priority and you’ll soon find that the physical, spiritual, emotional, and mental benefits are beyond measure.

Heavenly Father, thank You for allowing us access to You at all times through the Word and prayer. It’s an awesome thought to know that we can come to the Creator of the universe for guidance, direction and comfort. Give us a deep thirst for You Lord that cannot be quenched by anything but time spent with You so that we would seek You above all else. It’s in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!

We Must love like Jesus

"Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross." Philippians 2:5-8 NKJV

As I finished up the last half mile of my run yesterday morning, I held back tears as I listened to the words sung by Casting Crowns coming through my earbuds... Jesus, friend of sinners, we have strayed so far away. We cut down people in Your name, but the sword was never ours to swing. Jesus, friend of sinners, the truth's become so hard to see. The world is on their way to You, but they're trippin' over me. Always lookin' around, but never lookin' up, I'm so double minded. A plank eyed saint with dirty hands and a heart divided. Oh, Jesus, friend of sinners. Open our eyes to the world at the end of our pointing fingers. Let our hearts be led by mercy. Help us reach with open hearts and open doors. Oh, Jesus, friend of sinners, Break our hearts for what breaks Yours. “Oh Jesus,” I silently prayed upon hearing the lyrics that cut to my heart. “Let this be the cry of every Christian in the coming days, weeks and years. Help us keep the spirit of Christmas alive at all times by having hearts led by mercy, hearts that break for what breaks Yours.

And you know, when it comes to keeping the spirit of Christmas all year, you and I would do well to follow the example of Jesus who, the Bible tells us, came to "seek and to save that which was lost." Do you get that? Jesus loved sinners (that's you and me) so much that He willingly left his throne to humble Himself "taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men," to die on a cross for our sins. Can you think of a love greater than that? This is the kind of love that changes hearts and transforms lives and is the same love that Jesus said we must extend to others saying, "as I have loved you, so you must love one another."

So let us remember that Jesus was a friend of sinners not because he approved sin, ignored sin, engaged in sin, or affirmed sinful practices. Jesus was a friend of sinners because He came to love them and lead them to repentance… and we must do the same.

Heavenly Father, thank You for loving us so much that You would send your one and only Son to be born of a virgin, to walk among us, and to ultimately die for us that we might be justified, made righteous, and receive eternal life. There is no greater love that could ever be displayed. Help us to love others in the same way Father that we might be the hands and feet of Jesus and compel the lost to be reconciled to You. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

The Perfect Gifts

"On coming to the house, they saw the Child with His mother Mary, and they fell down and worshiped Him. Then they opened their treasures and presented Him with gifts of gold and frankincense and myrrh." Matthew 2:11 BSB

"Oh please Mom," my daughter earnestly pleaded with me yesterday. "Please open your birthday gifts a day early. I'll be gone shopping all day tomorrow and I really want you to have them now. They're both something that you'll really love and will definitely use." As I debated on whether to give in, my husband chimed in and said, "Come on honey. She really wants you to see what we got you." "Okay," I said smiling at their insistence, "I'll do it now." And to say I was glad I did would have been an understatement. These two thoughtful people I'm blessed to call my family got me two of the most 'perfect' gifts a runner girl and busy mom could ever ask for--a Theragun mini to massage my sore muscles on the go and an air fryer/convection oven/microwave combo to cook my favorite foods. "I just love you guys so much," I told them afterwards. "Thank you for being so thoughtful."

And you know, when it comes to receiving the 'perfect' gifts, the Bible tells us that Magi from the east presented Jesus "with gifts of gold and frankincense and myrrh." And while there is speculation as to everything these gifts represent, the ancient church understood them to symbolize aspects of Christ's life, ministry, and the work He would do. The gold suggested His royalty as King of the Jews and Lord of lords. In the frankincense, they saw His divinity. The myrrh represented His humanity—and that to the fullest extent because myrrh suggests death and burial. Thus, the gifts were 'perfect' because they came to show Jesus as King, God, and Man.

So when opening your gifts this Christmas, remember that there was never a more 'perfect' Gift given to the world than Jesus Christ. Treasure this Gift knowing that without it, you and I would not have forgiveness from sins and the promise of eternal life.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the 'perfect' and priceless gift of your son Jesus Christ. Cause us to truly understand that this King and High Priest left his throne to be born of a virgin so that He could walk among us and eventually die on the cross to save us from our sins. Give us a boldness to share this Message with everyone Lord so that they too would know the reason we celebrate this season and be inspired to follow the only One who deserves all our honor, worship and praise. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running and Merry Christmas!

Continue to Praise

“There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job, and that man was blameless and upright, one who feared God and turned away from evil.” Job 1:1 ESV

In an article published Tuesday subtitled “In best shape of his life, Aaron Kuen remains unconscious in Sacramento hospital” the following was reported: The marathoner, Iraq war veteran and father of three was within reach of a personal record at the California International Marathon when he collapsed near the end of his run. Aaron Kuen, 37, was a quarter of a mile from the finish line and his family when he stopped breathing during the Dec. 4 event. "I was so proud. It was everything he wanted," Aaron's wife Augustina Kuen said. "It was literally the pace he wanted. He was doing so well." Augustina said doctors told her it was a "freak event." "It's a rare thing: hit by lightning, very bad luck — all the horrible cliches," she said. "It was a one-in-a-million event in his body. He did nothing wrong."

And you know, when it comes to bad things happening to people who seemingly (because we all sin) ‘did nothing wrong’, the Bible gives us the book of Job, the story of a righteous man who suffered in ways that are almost beyond belief. You see, God allowed Satan to do everything he wanted to Job except kill him. Yet Job continued to praise God through it all saying, “The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; may the name of the LORD be praised." Job didn’t understand why God had allowed the things He did, but he knew that God was good and therefore continued to trust in Him through it all. Ultimately, that should be our reaction as well, especially since we know that God works ALL things for the good of those who love Him.

So no matter what trials you and I might be facing today, may our reaction to them be to sing praises to the One whose ways are much higher than ours; knowing that God will not allow His sons and daughters to suffer in vain.

Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding us that we won’t understand everything that happens in life nor should we try to. Cause us to remember that You are sovereign over all, and because of that we should trust all things to work for our good and for your glory. Give us peace in the midst of our problems Lord. It’s in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

BASS PRO MIDWEEK MOTIVATION - Make Christmas Fitness a Family Affair

Hello runner friends!
Welcome back to the Bass Pro Fitness Series
MIDWEEK M😊TIVATI😊N blog!

Now let's get started by talking about Christmas! Can you believe it's almost here? And that means presents under the tree, lots of rich food and precious time spent with family. Could there be any season more wonderful than this one? I personally don't think so. But this is also the time when many runners are torn between, "Do I go for a run and sacrifice time with my loved ones or do I stay inside and make memories while dreaming about getting back outside or running on the treadmill?"

Well.... how about changing up your exercise plans to combine movement with family time? You'll not only make memories but avoid some of the weight gain, mood swings and setbacks that come with taking time off from running. And since regular physical activity improves our mood we would do well to incorporate it into our holiday rituals and traditions.

So to help you and your family find more joy together during the holiday season, check out these 11 Christmas Activities from ACTIVEFORLIFE (with some modifications) that will help keep the holiday fit, festive, fun and full of excitement.

1. Harvest a real Christmas tree

There are plenty of good reasons to harvest a real tree instead of an artificial tree. Not only is it better for the environment but it makes for a fun active holiday tradition. Strolling through a Christmas tree farm and picking out that perfect tree is a magical experience for the entire family. It also gets the heart pumping, especially if you have to trudge through knee-high snow.

2. Join a local Santa Run

A Santa Run, Santa Shuffle, or Elf Walk is a fun holiday tradition for getting the whole family moving regardless of fitness level, age, or ability. Kids really enjoy Santa Runs--especially when they can wear fun Santa hats and enjoy hot cocoa at the end. If there’s no Santa Run near you, invite a couple of families and plan your own informal Santa Run around your neighborhood or nearby park.

3. Go ice skating on an indoor or outdoor rink

Strap on those skates for a fun family skating session. Skating is great physical activity for children. It helps them develop movement skills like coordination and balance, and gets their heart pumping too.

4. Swim at the pool or join a polar bear dip!

Take advantage of public swim times at your community indoor pool to splash in the water over the holiday season. Swimming is a whole body activity for all ages that’s great for coordination, strength, and cardio. It’s also a great opportunity for Mom or Dad to sneak in a much-needed moment of relaxation in the hot tub.

5. Enjoy a holiday lights walk

Most towns and cities have a neighborhood with eye-catching displays of holiday lights and decorations for everyone to enjoy. Instead of doing the typical holiday lights drive-by, find a spot to park your vehicle and enjoy a walk through the neighborhood instead. When your walk is done, head to a local coffee shop or home to enjoy a warm cup of tea or hot chocolate together.

6. Do an “active” act of kindness (this one’s my favorite)

The Christmas season is a wonderful time for showing kindness to those around us. Doing an “active” act of kindness is an opportunity to spread some holiday cheer while getting active as a family. Think of some physical activities that might be challenging for sick, disabled, or elderly people to do in winter weather. Here are some ideas: shoveling snow, spreading salt on walkways, taking a dog for a walk, and collecting the mail. Try to come up with some of your own “active” acts of kindness that you can do together as a family.

7. Explore winter with an outdoor scavenger hunt

Winter is a magical time. Like every other season, there’s plenty to see and explore—you might just have to look a little closer. One great way to explore nature is by doing an outdoor scavenger hunt. This simple tool lets us slow down and appreciate the beauty of nature all around, whether it’s in a city, town or in the country. You can find a free winter scavenger hunt printable here.

8. Decorate an outdoor tree for wild animals

Winter can be a challenging season for wildlife and the holidays can be a great time to give them a helping hand. Try decorating an outdoor tree for wildlife or making homemade birdseed ornaments. Paired with popcorn garlands, birdseed ornaments can be hung on a small tree for birds to enjoy over the holiday season. Decorating an outdoor tree will encourage active time outdoors in a fun and unique way that your family will treasure.

9. Sled down a hill

One thing that we will have going for us this holiday season (if the weatherman is right) is snow! While the thought of bundling everyone up can be overwhelming enough to warrant staying indoors, time spent outside gives a big boost to our health and well-being, something we all need more of over the holidays.

10. Build a snowman, snow fort, or snow sculpture

Continuing with the snow theme, snow is also a great medium for building with and sculpting. Rolling big snowballs to make a snowman is a great workout, and so is building a snow fort. These activities offer opportunities to build strength and coordination, and to encourage creative play. If the snow is light and dry, pack a bunch of it into a big container, let it sit overnight, and tip it over in the morning. The snow should have hardened enough to make a nice snow carving block.

11. Go on a outdoor winter picnic

Delicious food and the holidays go hand-in-hand, but one way to enjoy some tasty treats while getting in some active time outdoors is to go for an outdoor winter picnic. This can be as simple as bringing hot chocolate and cookies to enjoy at a park or hiking into nature and setting up a more elaborate picnic lunch in the woods. If your children are younger, bring food that’s easy to eat with mitts on (granola bars, sandwiches, muffins, carrots) so those little fingers don’t get too frosty. And don’t forget to bring along a picnic blanket to sit on!

So there you have it friends. By thinking a bit outside the box, you can combine fun, fitness, family, and festivities to make some amazing memories this Christmas. You might even find one of these activities to be so enjoyable that you make it a holiday tradition. But no matter what you do this holiday season, I hope that you'll remember the true meaning of Christmas and share it with your friends and family. Merry Christmas friends!

Happy Running!

Lend your Support

“To Timothy my true son in the faith: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.” 1 Timothy 1:2 NIV

In a story titled “Darren Kay: Missing runner's family overwhelmed by support published by the BBC, the following was said about the ongoing search for the missing runner: The family of a British man who went missing while running alone on Madeira say they have been overwhelmed with support. Fell runner Darren Kay, 52, was on holiday with his partner in the town of Calheta when the couple went on a two-hour run together on Sunday. Mr Kay, from Sedbergh in Cumbria, decided to carry on by himself but never returned, his brother Jonny said. The family said they were working with agencies on the island to find him. In a statement, they said: "Sadly we are not able to provide any positive news at this time in the search for Darren. They went on to say, “We would also wish to thank everyone back home for their messages of support and we have been overwhelmed by the generosity shown."

And you know, while messages of support might not have the power to change a person’s situation or circumstances, notes or letters of encouragement do have the power to help them endure the trials and hardships they might be facing. Which is the very reason Paul wrote two letters to young Timothy filling him with the “Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord” that were of immeasurable value in giving him the strength, knowledge, courage, fortitude, and confidence to keep pressing on despite the hurdles and hardships that he would face as a young pastor and faithful follower of Christ.

So let us follow the example of Paul and send an encouraging note or text to a person who might need a little bit of encouragement today. Or better yet, when it’s in our power to do so, let us deliver it in person remembering that although Christmas is the most wonderful time of year for some, there are many people who willl be alone and hurting.

Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding us that encouraging words can bring immeasurable comfort to people who might be hurting or lonely. Cause us to be sensitive to the Spirit’s prompting and to act on it when we are prompted to visit, call, text or write to someone knowing it could be just what they need to muster the resolve to press on. Lord we also pray for Darren Kay and his family today. It’s in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!

Trust the Creator

“He said to them, “Because of your little faith. For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.’” Matthew 17:20 ESV

In a story aired by CBS News Colorado last week, runner Naomi Bogale's story (which they deemed a story of faith, and could be a Christmas miracle) was shared. One year ago, she was a world class athlete training to take the running world by storm. "I was dreaming to be world (a) record holder," said Bogale. She had just moved to Colorado from her home in Ethiopia to train, when her life was turned upside down. Seven months ago, she was on the way home from practice when the car she was riding in wrecked. Naomi suffered a broken back and a spinal cord injury. Naomi couldn't move or feel her legs; The thing she relied on to make a living. Most people assumed her running career and livelihood were gone. Many assumed she would never walk again, and if she did, it would be a long journey. "Doctors they said maybe in 2-3 years, that's maybe," said Bogale. But Naomi has an enormous amount of faith. She had faith she could walk again, and has faith in her creator. One night she says her faith lifted her. And her faith certainly paid off. Just seven months after being completely paralyzed Naomi could walk with the aid of a walker. She gives all the credit for her recovery to God.

And you know when it comes to the size of our faith, Jesus said that a person who has the "faith like a grain of mustard seed" (a seed that’s very, very small but has the potential to become a 30-ft bush) could tell a mountain to move and it would move. In other words, nothing would be impossible for the person who placed their small faith in a big and mighty God. You see, what matters most is what our faith is in, the object of our faith not so much the size of it. Which means there’s no “mountain” that can't be moved or problem that can't be overcome when we trust in the Creator of the universe.

So don't be afraid to speak to the mountains in your way today my friend and declare, "Why would I worry when giants come calling my name? My God is so much bigger than troubles I face. Why would I hunger for power or riches or fame? Oh, 'cause my God is so much better than all of these things. So I won't be shaken. I won't be moved. My God is faithful. His promise is true. So I'll speak to the mountains "Oh, it's time to move. 'Cause my God is bigger, better, stronger, greater than you."

Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding us that nothing is impossible with You. You are more than capable of moving those mountains in our way Lord. Cause us to trust You to move them in your time and in your way so that we would not fret or worry about the future. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Walk Worthy of the Calling

“I. therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to, walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. Ephesians 4:1-3 (ESV)

In an article titled, “Richmond once again named a ‘runner friendly’ city by Road Runners Club of America” published yesterday, the following was reported: Whether it’s a 5k or an early morning job, runners love Richmond. Now, the city has officially renewed its status as a Runner Friendly Community with the Road Runners Club of America (RRCA). At the end of November, Richmond’s status as a Runner Friendly Community was offically renewed by the RRCA, alongside four other cities. To determine if a community is “Runner Friendly,” RRCA looks at community infrastructure, community support and local government support. Cities have to prove that their community supports running and that they can maintain infrastructure that makes running both safe and enjoyable.

And you know, when it comes to proving something, Paul told the church at Ephesus to “walk in a manner worthy of the calling” to which they were called by showing “all humility and gentleness, with patience” and “bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” Why? Because, in light of all that Jesus had done for them, that radical way of living showed that they loved Him, were thankful for His death on the cross, and were committed to the cause of Christ. It was proof to the world that they were willing to  follow Jesus at any cost.

So let me ask you this my friend…. does the way you’re living show that you are a faithful follower of Jesus Christ? If not then it’s time to consider all that He has done for you so that you will be motivated by your love for Him to walk worthy.

Heavenly Father, thank You for leaving your throne to be born in a manger so that you could live among us and then die for our sins. Cause us to truly understand all that You have done for us so that we would walk in a manner worthy of the calling to be sons and daughters of God. It’s in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!

Stretch your Faith

“And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.” Hebrews 11:6 NIV

In an article titled, “The Best Inversion Tables to Help Work Out the Kinks In Your Back,” and subtitled “Get at-home relief and relaxation from a good stretch of the spine” posted by Runner’s World Sunday, the following was said: An inversion table might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you’re furnishing your home gym, but it could be the one of the most important. Inversion tables are helpful for people with back pain, as they can reduce and even eliminate discomfort from chronic back pain, sciatica, and herniated disks. Even if you have a healthy back, an inversion table can improve your posture, release stress, and stretch out your spine after a day hunched at a desk. Done frequently this type of stretching will not only help you with pain but can make you a better runner. And who doesn’t want that right?

And speaking of stretching, the Bible is very clear that our growing belief in God pleases Him so much that He “rewards those who earnestly seek him,” or those who continue to stretch or grow in their faith. Which means we become ‘better’ Christians each and every time our belief in God is tested in the fires of trials and adversity and we prove to be faithful followers who continue to pursue Christ despite the obstacles. You see, in order for our trust in God to show and grow we must encounter, endure, and ultimately overcome hardships, hard times, and calamities—something that’s never pleasant at the time but reaps benefits and bounties of immeasurable value when we don't give up.

So no matter what trial or trouble you might be facing today my friend, hold tight to your faith. Remember all the times God has been faithful to you in the past and trust that He will be faithful again today, tomorrow and everyday thereafter. Seek the Lord earnestly through prayer and supplication and then trust Him as you watch your faith growing and stretching.

Heavenly Father, thank you for stretching us to make us more like You. Help us to patiently lean into You during these times rather than resist the care, comfort, and compassion that only You can give. Remind us Lord that like a tree, our roots grow strongest when we face the winds. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus, Amen.

Happy Running!!!

BASS PRO MIDWEEK MOTIVATION - Sing those Carols

Hello runner friends!
Welcome back to the Bass Pro Fitness Series
MIDWEEK M😊TIVATI😊N blog!

Now let’s get started by talking about a way to make your holiday runs more festive and to prepare yourself for Christmas all at the same time… making up new lyrics as you listen to those holiday classics. This will not only make the miles fly by as quickly as Santa’s sleigh but will make you as jolly as St. Nick's elves.

So after I give you my unique rendition of Bruce Springsteen’s Santa Claus is Coming to Town (after all that’s the guy who gave us ‘Born to Run’ right? so what better song to pick?), check out these other yuletide tunes that have been modified by runners to fit the season and the sport.

It's all cold down along the racecourse
The wind's whipping down the trail
Hey running group!
(Yeah? Hey, there!) You runners know what time of year it is?
(Yeah!) What time, huh? What? (Christmas time!)
What? (Christmas time!) Oh, Christmas time!
You guys all, you runners all been good and training real hard?
Yeah? Ed, you been, you been training real hard now,
So Santa'll bring you a new pair of Speedgoats, right?
Everybody out there been good, or what?
Oh, that's not many, not many, you guys are in trouble out here!
Come on.

Yeah, you better PR, you better not whine
You better not gripe, I'm telling you why
Santa Claus is coming to town
Santa Claus is coming to town
Santa Claus is coming to town
He's making a list, he's checkin' it twice
He's gonna find out whose naughty or nice
Santa Claus is coming to town
Santa Claus is coming to town
Santa Claus is coming to town

He sees you when you're tapering
He knows when you're off pace
He knows if you've been bad or good
You better be good for racing’s sake
(You better be good for racing’s sake)

AND NOW FOR THE OTHERS….

Frosty the Snowman

Frosty the snowman
Knew the sun was hot that day
So he said
Let’s run and we’ll have some fun
Now before I melt away

As for the other holiday classics? Well, they just need a few tweaks...

Rudolph the Red-Toed Reindeer

Rudolph the Red-Toed Reindeer
Had a very shiny blister
And if you ever saw it
You would even say, ‘No, sister!’

I’ll Be Home for Christmas (As Soon as I Get a Quick 5 In)

I’ll be home for Christmas
You can plan on me
Please have the shower on
Fourteen cookies and a cup of hot tea

I Saw Mommy Kissing Bart Yasso

I saw Mommy kissing Bart Yasso
Underneath the finish line last night

Jingle Bells

Dashing through the streets
On a tempo run tonight
O'er the hills we go
Trucking all the way...
Oh, what fun it is to laugh and sing a running song tonight.

Let It Snow

Oh the weather outside is frightful
But my new tights are so delightful
And since we have 10 miles to go
Let it snow! Let it snow! Black ice, no!

Deck the Halls

Deck the halls with racing medals,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Rather run than push those pedals,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Don we now our wicking apparel,
Fa la la, la la la, la la la.
Troll the cabernet by the barrel,
Fa la la la, la la, la la.

Twelve Days of Christmas

Twelve muscles hurting
Eleven hills a climbing
Ten nails a splitting
Nine eggs a nogging
Eight miles a hoofing
Seven PRs a wanting
Six shoes a buying
Five goooolden pancakes
Four missing socks
Three neon shirts
Two rubbing thighs
And a big goal in the New Year

So there you have it friends. Singing songs while running is always fun but is even more fun this time of the year when we remember the words of Buddy the Elf, "The best way to spread Christmas is cheer is singing loud for all to hear." So modify those tunes to fit your pace and get out there and sing them at the top of your lungs for all to hear.

Happy Running!

Don’t be Caught Unaware

For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.” Matthew 24:38-39 NIV

In an article titled, "Chicago Marathon Returns to 45,000 Finishers for 45th Anniversary" published Friday, the following was reported: On December 8, the Chicago Marathon announced that 45,000 participants will start the 2023 edition of the historic race. The field size honors the marathon’s 45th anniversary. Additionally, one of the 2023 participants will cross the finish line as the Chicago Marathon’s significant one-millionth finisher. “We’re thrilled to host 45,000 participants for the first time since 2019 at the 2023 Bank of America Chicago Marathon,” Carey Pinkowski, Chicago Marathon Executive Race Director, said in a press release. “As part of our millionth-finisher field, these participants will write their names in the event’s history book during a particularly special year. We look forward to celebrating their performances, as well as the contributions of the volunteers, spectators and community members who have made the Chicago Marathon the world-class racing tradition it is today.”

And you know, while things returning to ‘normal’ might give many people a reason to celebrate and let down their guard, the discerning Christian should take heed and consider the words of Jesus, “For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.” You see, the Bible is very clear about what will be happening in our world before the return of our Savior. And no matter how ‘normal’ things may appear right now, the event will happen in the blink of an eye. Sadly, those who have not put their trust in Jesus will be caught unprepared; something that has devastating eternal consequences.

So don’t be caught unaware my friend. Jesus is coming back at a time when we least expect it, no matter how ‘normal’ the world might seem now. Be ready by placing your trust in Him today.

Heavenly Father, thank You for your Word that clearly lists the signs of Jesus’ imminent return. Give us discerning hearts and eyes Lord that we would not be fooled into a false sense of comfort and be caught unaware or unprepared when Jesus comes to take us home. It’s in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Commit your Work to the Lord

"Commit your work to the LORD, and your plans will be established." Proverbs 16:3 ESV

In an email I received yesterday from Runner’s World+, Coach Jess addressed strength training and the importance of incorporating it into your routine saying, "As a runner, you don’t need to be a bodybuilder. You only need to strength train to become a stronger and more resilient runner. It’s that simple." She then went on to say, "The goal when it comes to strength training for a runner should be… (drum roll)... three times a week for at least 20 minutes per session. Can you commit to that? Let’s try it. Remember, it doesn’t have to be complicated. Start with bodyweight movements, add in resistance bands, and then work up to dumbbells and weight. The word is getting out that muscle deteriorates with age and building strength in the gym is critical for overall wellness and vitality. So start with three times a week for 20 minutes. Track your progress and improvements, and pay attention to how you feel."

And you know, when it comes to committing to something to ensure success, the Bible tells us to commit our work to the Lord, and our plans will be established. This means devoting ourselves to doing only those things that please God and bring Him glory. It means rolling up our sleeves to begin the work we are compelled to do while attributing the effort done in order to achieve the purpose or result solely to Him. It means moving forward to complete a task, trusting God as if everything depended on Him, while working as if everything depended on us.

So commit your work to God today my friend. Seek and follow Him with your whole heart so that you will know His will and have complete confidence that when your work aligns with it, success will follow.

Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding us that we must rely on You for all of our needs and give You all the glory when those needs are met. Cause us to seek Your will for our lives and to be ready to step out and start the work when our hearts are compelled by You to take action. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Run with the Wise

“Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.” Proverbs 13:20 ESV

In an article subtitled, "Whether you’re new to running, new to the city, or looking for a new crew, this NYC running club directory can point you in the right direction" posted by Runner's World on Tuesday, the following was said: New York City is the largest city in the country, with 8.4 million people calling one of its five boroughs home. The Big Apple is also home to one of the biggest road races in the world, the New York City Marathon. You shouldn’t be surprised, then, to discover that there are hundreds of running clubs throughout the city. So whether you’re moving to NYC or are looking to join a new running club, we have a comprehensive list of all the running clubs out there. The list is sorted by borough, then by alphabetical order. Each entry links to a club’s website or social media page. So scroll through and find the right crew for your running future!

And you know, when it comes to having a bright future, the Bible tells us that “Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise but the companion of fools will suffer harm.” Which is the very reason you and I would do well to not only choose our running groups carefully but those people who we associate with often, the people we refer to as friends, who are in our inner circle, and who we seek advice from. You see, good companions bring much discernment to our lives and when we choose to associate ourselves with wise men and women, we will grow in wisdom, knowledge and understanding; something that will draw us closer to Christ. On the other hand, foolish companions will corrupt our character and lead us astray.

So choose your close companions very carefully my friend. Make sure they are walking with Christ and showing the fruit of the Spirit so that time spent with them will make you wiser and keep you from harm.

Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding us that the people or groups we choose to spend time with will affect our Christian walk either positively or negatively. Give us the ability to judge them well so that we would ensure our spiritual future is successful. It’s in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!

Run in Such a Way to Win

“Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win.” 1 Corinthians 9:24 NASB

In an article titled, “RUNNING: Pottsville grad Stoner becomes national champion marathoner” published yesterday, the following was reported: Paige Stoner never stopped chasing her dreams. Sunday, in Sacramento, California, she caught one of them. Shattering the course record by 51 seconds, the 2014 Pottsville Area High School graduate captured the victory at the California International Marathon. As a result, she was crowned USA Track & Field's national champion in the marathon. Stoner completed the 26.2 miles in 2:26.02, which was 1 minute, 39 seconds faster than runner-up Lauren Hurley of Boulder, Colorado, who ran 2:27.41. Of the win, she later said,” "I was very emotional. It was my first professional win — period. There's nothing like breaking the tape in a race like that. It was incredibly special."

And you know, when it comes to ‘breaking the tape,’ something only the first finisher of a race gets to do, the Bible is clear that believers are to “run in such a way” that they would win. That means devoting the same time, effort, and dedication to knowing and serving Christ that a determined athlete devotes to training. This requires a single-mindedness to take action each and every day to improve and hone your skills, doing only those things that will get you closer to the goal of being Christ-like and doing nothing that would hinder your progress in any way. It’s a focused determination to be the absolute best that you can be knowing that coming in first is sometimes only a matter of milliseconds.

So run to win my friend. Train with all your might each and every day as an Olympic athlete trains to take home the gold. Tenaciously pursue the goal of breaking the tape so that you will be declared worthy of the prize that awaits every one that does so.

Heavenly Father, thank You for laying out what it takes to run in such a way to win. Give us the discipline, dedication and the strength to pursue You with all that we have, letting nothing deter us from breaking the tape and bringing you glory. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

BASS PRO MIDWEEK MOTIVATION - Skip the Excuses this Christmas

Hello runner friends!
Welcome back to the Bass Pro Fitness Series
MIDWEEK M😊TIVATI😊N blog!

Now let's get started by talking about the upcoming holiday season. While Christmas is indeed the most wonderful time of the year, it's also the time of year when people make up wonderful excuses why they can't exercise--something they inevitably regret on January 1st when they can't fit into their running tights.

So in an effort to disprove the top six excuses for skipping your runs and strength-training sessions during the holidays, check out these excuse busters from the American Council on Exercise.

Excuse: It's too cold.
Excuse buster:
Surely, with the temperatures dropping and the holidays being just around the corner, Mother Nature becomes a great excuse to avoid the gym or experience the great outdoors. If this is the case for you, bring the gym home — literally.

Stair steps, chairs, your living room floor, and doorways can all be easily converted for exercise. Use body-weight only exercises to keep your exercise routine on track.

*On a side note, most people who are intimidated by the idea of running in the cold don't have the proper clothing. Do a little bit of research on what to wear and you might just find that winter running is your jam!

Excuse: I don't have the time.
Excuse buster:
With holiday gift-shopping, get-togethers, cooking, hosting and entertaining family members, time is more precious than ever. If you feel like you're too busy to fit in regular exercise, try combining exercise with some of your daily activities.

Park your car further away from the entrance at the mall, set up walking business meetings, take your dog for an extended walk, and create workouts with your co-workers during lunch. Recruit your family for fun, aerobic activities, such as taking brisk walks, engaging in a friendly snowball fight, or visiting the public ice skating rink, the ski slopes, or playing Nintendo Wii Sports video games. Physical activity is a great way to relieve stress, create team spirit, and tighten emotional bonds.

Excuse: I need to travel and can't take the gym with me.

Excuse buster:
If you're traveling this holiday season, you're not alone. Millions of Americans will be on the road or in the air, but that's still not a good enough excuse to stick your exercise routine on the backburner!

People who travel for extended periods of time in an airplane should stretch to avoid deep vein thrombosis, a potentially life-threatening disorder that occurs when a blood clot forms, and create an action plan to incorporate active breaks during extended car travel.

*On a side note, keep in mind that little activities add up. Speed walk around the airport while waiting for your flight or do lunges while you're pumping gas.

Excuse: I'll start fresh in January
Excuse buster:
The new year does mean new beginnings, but wouldn't it be nice to start it with a headstart? New Year's resolutions are full of promise, but very few people actually keep them. By staying active through December, you can avoid the common new year pitfalls of doing too much too soon, which can often lead to burn-out or injuries.

Excuse: I can't get motivated when it's so dark.

Excuse buster:
If you’re telling yourself, “I can’t hit the running trails in the mornings, because it’s still dark outside,” or say “I may as well drive home after work because it’s dark,” it may be time to recruit an exercise buddy or hire a personal trainer. Having the accountability and companionship may be just what you need to stick to the workout on your calendar — even when it is cold and dark outside.
If you can’t find a workout buddy, try a group exercise class or boot camp. The classes might add some needed variety — and fun — to your routine, too.
*On a side note, find lit routes to run or purchase a bright LED headlamp to light your path. Now’s not the time to give up your morning or evening runs.

Excuse: I have so many holiday parties to attend!
Excuse buster:
Yes, it’s definitely tough to stay on track when temptations like holiday treats are ubiquitous. While there is nothing wrong with splurging a little, you’re bound to feel better following a healthy diet while limiting your alcohol intake.

Useful tricks for party-goers include bringing your own healthy treat like a veggie platter, eating something healthy before going to the party, drinking a glass of water with every alcoholic beverage, staying away from the dessert tray, paying close attention to portion sizes, and avoiding going back for seconds.

Also, exercising before festivities helps prevent unwanted weight gain and fosters wellbeing, so try to fit in 30 minutes before you get ready for that party.

So there you have it friends. While you might find lots of excuses to forego exercise this holiday season, don't give in to any of them. You'll not only avoid losing all the endurance you gained while training for Bass Pro or Dogwood Canyon but you'll avoid gaining those holiday pounds that seem to hang around long after the Christmas tree has been taken down and put away. I don’t know about you but extra weight

Happy Running!
