Ditch the stress

"It is useless for you to work so hard from early morning until late at night, anxiously working for food to eat; for God gives rest to his loved ones." Psalm 127:2 NLT

Yeah, yeah.. we've all heard it. Getting enough sleep is important, especially for runners. But did you know that not getting eight hours of it is one of the top surefire ways to mess up your morning workout? And the research done on the importance of grabbing your Zzzs only heightens its significance. Apparently this is the time when your body recovers from those sessions of vigorous physical exercise and getting too little of it could very easily set you up for failure the next day in more ways than one.

And the top reason an estimated 25 to 30 percent of Americans aren't getting enough rest? Stress - mainly the stress caused by working too much and worrying how to make ends meet. No matter the cause though, this harmful state of mental and emotional strain interferes with the biological processes that help us fall asleep (which can leave us even more stressed). And why the Bible is so clear about the futility of working tirelessly, at the expense of sleep, to gain those things we should be trusting God to provide. You see, when we trust God fully and allow Him to dictate what we do and when, we will maintain a healthy balance between work and rest.

So if you find that your training, family life or personal life is suffering from the demands of work today, won't you take some time to ask God if you're truly trusting him to meet all your needs? And then work toward having that healthy balance that allows you to claim the precious gift of rest that God so graciously gives "to his loved ones."

Heavenly Father, thank you for your Word that serves to remind us that, although we are not to be lazy in serving you or working, we also need to take time to rest and recharge our bodies both physically and spiritually. Help us to trust that if we have listened to and heeded your direction, that you will provide those things we need eliminating our need to worry or stress. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!!!
