In May, Superhero Events announced the creation of the USA Half Marathon, a qualifiers-only half marathon on November 21 in San Diego. But not everyone has been thrilled by the news. Organizers of the San Diego Half Marathon, held in mid March, feel the USA Half Marathon course is too similar to theirs. Interestingly enough, eight miles of the USA course are a direct copy of the San Diego race but will be run in the opposite direction with the other three miles run on parallel roads. Seems everyone is always trying to copy a good thing doesn't it?
The devil is no different. He's been attempting to be like God since Genesis 3 when he told Eve, "You surely will not die! For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." (v. 4-5). And he is still doing it today as 2 Corinthians 11:4 warns us, "Satan disguises himself as an angel of light." He is the father of lies and wants nothing more than to lead God's people astray. Sadly, as he did with Eve, he will succeed in his mission unless we are careful to follow the example of the Bereans, "for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true."
Simply said, the only way to spot a liar is to know the truth. And the only way to spot a copy cat is to know the original. In a world with so many "truths" being taught, may we examine the scriptures every day to see for ourselves what is true and to seek the Truth and the Original at all times.
Heavenly Father, thank you for giving us your Word that we might study it, learn it and be able to distinguish the truth from lies. Your Word tells us that the devil is the father of all lies yet masquerades as an angel of light. May we always be examining the scriptures to discern the truth and be able to recognize an imposter and counterfeit teachings when we encounter them. Help us then to stand firm in our beliefs and teach others to do the same. It's in your precious name we pray, Jesus. Amen.
