"Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things." Philippians 4:8
In a recent study titled, "9 Things Science Says All Runners Think About When They Run", participating runners were asked to verbalize their thoughts (as they came to mind) while wearing a tape recorder strapped to their waist. The study showed that whether they were a one-mile or marathon runner, the chances were good that they were thinking the same thing as the runner beside them. And most of those thoughts were in the form of a "pep talk" to themselves, constant reminders of the good things around them and that the bad wasn't as bad as it seemed.
While positive thinking is helpful in getting us through a run, the bible tells us that it is crucial in getting us through each day providing us the ultimate list of what we should be thinking about when it says, "Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things." Talk about the ultimate "pep talk"!
I wonder if we were all to record our thoughts today, how many of them would be excellent and praiseworthy? If you don't like the answer to that question, perhaps it's time to retrain your brain. Just as running well takes practice, thinking well does too. Spend time in God's word and make it a point to remind yourself of the good things around you.
Heavenly Father, thank you for giving us so many things to be thankful for, things that many times we don't even notice. Help us to retrain our minds to think only excellent or praiseworthy thoughts that we might be grateful servants of you. And help us to remember that true, noble and pure thoughts lead to right, lovely and admirable actions. It's in your precious name we pray, Jesus. Amen.
