Make today matter

"Yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes." James 4:14

Saturday's Associated Press Headlines read, "Runner dies during Rock 'n' Roll Marathon in Georgia." The name of the 35-year-old man has not been disclosed nor has his cause of death, the report said, saying only that temperatures in Savannah reached 84 degrees that day causing course closures. This is surely not how this man expected the day to end. As he left home that morning, excited and nervous about the race, he most likely had no idea it would be his last time walking out the door. Had he known, perhaps he would have done things differently.

Truthfully though, we would probably all live our lives differently if we knew it was to be our last day wouldn't we? James 4:14 reminds us that we, "do not know what tomorrow will bring" and the Bible certainly never assures us of a tomorrow. So this day could very possibly be that last day... our last day. Wouldn't it be wise then to live "differently"? To serve and love others so that, no matter when our life ends, we will have lived a life of purpose?

Knowing that, make today matter. Tell those people you love that you love them. Tell someone about Jesus. Let go of those grudges and let forgiveness rule in your heart. Stop for a moment to enjoy the sunset. Praise Him for each footstep you count on your morning run. But mostly, live with purpose today confident as you lay your head down to rest that, should tomorrow never come, today you made a difference.

Heavenly Father, thank you for the many blessings you give us each and everyday. We know we take so many of them for granted Lord. Help us to live a life of purpose focused on your will for our lives and fulfilling the goals you have set before us. May we strive to love others, serve others and to make a difference in someone's life each and every day by showing them the love of Christ within us. It's in your precious name we pray, Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!!!
