"Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life." Matthew 25:46
On Sunday, the Portland Fire & Rescue department reported that a bystander performed CPR and helped revive a runner who had collapsed on the course of the Portland Marathon (at about mile 15) after going into cardiac arrest. They said this bystander-turned-good-samaritan quickly evaluated the man, determined CPR was necessary and started chest compressions. PF&R later reported that the man survived due, greatly in part, to the quick response of the bystander and EMS later transported the fallen runner to a nearby hospital for further treatment.
You know, when it comes to helping people in physical danger, most of us would have done the same thing and stepped in to help. Wouldn't you agree? Sadly though, there are millions of people in the world that are in danger of spiritual death--and Christians are doing nothing to help, content to just stand by and watch, even though the Bible is very clear that those who have not accepted Jesus Christ as their Savior will die an eternal death and "go away to eternal punishment." And since we would not want that to happen to anyone, shouldn't we be more than bystanders? Shouldn't we be those people who have determined that sharing Christ with those around us is not an option but a requirement? I sure think so.
So if we truly believe there is only one way to "eternal life" and only the "righteous" will enter into it, let us do more than just stand and watch. Let us step in and be His messengers. Let us be the ones to revive a lost world.
Heavenly Father, thank you for your salvation and the eternal life that awaits every believer. Help us to take the Great Commission seriously and go and make disciples of all nations, beginning by telling those people in our own backyard. May we realize how final death is for those who don't know you and be bold in spreading the Message. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.
