Avoid the discussion

"As I urged you when I went into Macedonia, stay there in Ephesus so that you may command certain people not to teach false doctrines any longer or to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies. Such things promote controversial speculations rather than advancing God’s work—which is by faith." 1 Timothy 1:3,4

In the new book Fitter Faster, health journalist Robert J. Davis and celebrity fitness trainer Brad Kolowich, Jr. exposed nine common exercise myths that are completely unnecessary and maybe even counterproductive such as stretching beforehand to prevent injuries, working-out on an empty stomach to burn more fat and downing fluids even when we're not thirsty. Not only are these practices ineffective, they take time away from the work-out and exercise we should be doing. The point is, they said, exercise advice can be misleading so it is wise for people to guard themselves against any widely held but false beliefs or ideas.

And while following myths might deter our fitness goals, devoting ourselves to them by engaging in religious speculation or pointless theological arguments can have far disastrous effects. Paul knew that when he urged Timothy to warn the people at Ephesus not to teach false doctrines or get caught up in pointless controversies or conversations about them. You see, Paul also knew that doing so would only take time. energy and attention away from the thing they should be doing, promoting the Gospel and "advancing God's work".

And you know, just as we should avoid meaningless discussions, we would do well to avoid anything or anybody that keeps us from doing God's work. Wouldn't you agree? In other words, let us not get side-tracked in our mission to stay on-track.

Heavenly Father, thank you for your Word that warns us to stay focused on your mission for us that we might not get sidetracked by the things of this world. Give us a hunger for your Word that we would recognize false doctrine immediately and steer clear away from it. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!!!
