The comfort filter

"But the LORD said to me, "Do not say, 'I am too young.' You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you." Jeremiah 1:7

Image result for witnessing to homeless pic

In an article published by Men's Journal titled, "When should you really replace your running shoes?", experts and runners debated the long-standing idea that shoes should be replaced every 250 to 500 miles. The problem with that, they said, is that there's little evidence to substantiate the need for such frequent replacement and the factors that determine how quickly a shoe wears out vary differently between every runner. Their conclusion was to gauge the need for a shoe change by the "comfort filter." Simply said, if the shoes are comfortable, keep them and if they're not, get a new pair.

And while it's definitely nice to be comfortable in our running shoes, getting comfortable in our spiritual shoes is not a good thing. You see, God made each one of us to be used as he sees fit-to step outside of our comfort zones and go wherever he calls us to go and do whatever he calls us to do just as he commanded the prophet, Jeremiah, "go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you."

Maybe, like Jeremiah, God is calling you to a task today that seems beyond your ability and your "comfort filter"? You can forget the excuses my friend, because if God has called you to do a job, whether you feel you're "too young", too old, too shy, too weak or too anything else, you can be sure he will give you everything you need to do it.

Heavenly Father, thank you for your Word that reminds us that every one of us was made for a purpose. Help us to be willing to be uncomfortable that we might do the work you have called us to whether that means feeding the homeless, serving on a missions trip in Africa, ministering to an addict or simply witnessing to our neighbor. Help us to be bold that we might be the hands and feet of Jesus. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Make the change

"You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness." Ephesians 4:22-24

Runners in the Vermont City Marathon in Burlington had to set their alarm clocks an hour earlier last Sunday in order to be at the start line by 7:00 a.m. The new start time was prompted by the extreme heat that stopped the race prematurely in 2016 when the conditions were declared to be at an "extreme risk" for the runners to continue. Ashley Foutz of Williston, who participated this year as part of a relay team, said she was thankful for the early starting time due to her experience last year. "It's going to be an adjustment, but I think in the end, it'll be good," Foutz said. "Last year was really rough, and it wasn't fun."

You know, adapting to adjustments isn't always easy or fun but, as the story illustrates, is many times necessary in order for us to make it to the finish line. And that's most definitely true in our spiritual lives as well. Paul knew it when he reminded the Church at Ephesus that, in order to be more like Christ and finish the race, they would need to make some adjustments in their behavior. You see, when you and I continue to live as we did before we became Christians, we are at an "extreme risk" of failing in our walk and in need of a change. And that change means putting off our "old self" or the way we once acted, spoke and thought and replacing it with a "new self" and a mind guided by the Holy Spirit.

So if what you're doing or the way you're living now is just not working and putting you at an "extreme risk" for failure, maybe it's time to make a change? It will definitely be an adjustment, but I know in the end it will be more than good.

Heavenly Father, thank you for loving us so much that you would forgive us when we don't act like the people you created us to be. Help us to recognize if our thinking or actions need to be changed and then give us the power to make the adjustments. Renew us from the inside out Lord. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Just be willing

"His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him." John 9:2,3

Image may contain: one or more people, people standing and outdoor

I was blessed to take part in several runs over the Memorial Day weekend and witness many more via social media. One that was particularly exciting was the TEAM 413 Gracerunner Journey held in Florida where a group of nine team members attempted to complete 413 miles in a 72-hour round-the-clock relay. And while there were runners of many abilities participating, one stood out above the rest-not because she was better or faster than any of the others but because she had to overcome more than any of the others. You see, Terryanne is a walker in need of a double knee replacement. But rather than allow her handicap to stop her, she allowed God to use it to prove the power of His strength. Every nine hours during the relay, Terryanne, cane in hand, did what should have been impossible. Through the pain, she walked 30 minute segments until the race was over and the goal had been completed.

And you know, even though most of us would never choose to have a handicap or disability, we can choose to embrace them knowing that many times our limitations are the very things that God can and will use to bring him glory. The Bible tells us so when it recounts the story of a young man who was blind from birth. When the disciples questioned Jesus as to whether it was caused by the man's sin or his parents' sin, Jesus told them that it was neither, but happened "so that the works of God might be displayed in him." After saying this, Jesus restored the man's sight displaying the power of God to heal.

So regardless of our reasons for suffering, two things are true. God will give us the strength to endure the adversity and hardships in our lives and He can and will use those situations and afflictions for his glory... if we let him. The question is then, will you let him?

Heavenly Father, thank you for your Word that reminds us that, while we may not ever understand why things happen to us, you can be glorified in and through every situation that we might face in life. Help us to trust you and then focus on the things we can do rather than the things we can't... just use us. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

For love of country

"This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters." 1 John 3:16

Image result for memorial day pics

On May 30, 1868, the first Memorial Day (then called Decoration Day) was observed to commemorate the sacrifice of Civil War Soldiers. During that first national celebration, former Union General and sitting Ohio Congressman James Garfield made a speech at Arlington National Cemetery that included these words, "We do not know one promise these men made, one pledge they gave, one word they spoke; but we do know they summed up and perfected, by one supreme act, the highest virtues of men and citizens. For love of country they accepted death, and thus resolved all doubts, and made immortal their patriotism and their virtue.” It wouldn't be until many years later that Memorial Day was declared a legal holiday and the official day for all Americans to pay tribute to the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces who, for love of country, gave their lives in service to the nation

But you know, not only did these brave men and women give their lives for the country they love but also for the people, like you and me, who lived in that country... people they would never know or who may never even appreciate or acknowledge the freedoms their sacrifice offered. And yet they served anyway-willing to lay down their lives at any moment for their "brothers and sisters" just as "Jesus Christ laid down his life for us". There is perhaps no greater example we may ever see this side of Heaven of "what love is" than that my friend.

With that in mind, may we, on this Memorial Day, take time out from our runs, races and barbecues to honor those heroes who, by one supreme act, gave their lives for us to enjoy the freedom to live and worship in what is still the greatest country on Earth. We most certainly owe these fallen soldiers a debt of gratitude and our sincerest thanks, wouldn't you agree? For who else but Jesus Christ and the American Soldier has ever been willing to die for us?

Heavenly Father, thank you for your Son, Jesus Christ, who showed us what it means to truly love one another. And thank you for the American Soldier who followed that example that we might live in a country where we are still free to worship You. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Watch out

"Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour." 1 Peter 5:8 NLT

Image result for runner looking out pic

On May 13 around 10 p.m. on Onset Avenue in Wareham, Massachusetts, Rene (who asked only to be identified by her first name) was about five miles into leg 12 of the Reebok Ragnar Cape Cod Relay when she heard what she thought was another runner approach her from behind. “Kind of thinking, 'Why isn't he passing me? There is nobody else around. Just go around me,'" Rene said. That's when the man began his attack, pushing her to the ground and strangling her. Thankfully a woman was nearby and yelled, scaring the attacker away. While the investigation is ongoing, Rene said she just wants to know who her attacker is.

In the middle of a publicized and sanctioned race with others around is certainly not where you would expect a person to get attacked is it? But it's yet another reminder that we should never let our guard down. And the same is true of our spiritual lives. The Bible warns us to "Stay alert!" and tells us exactly who our attacker is- the devil who "prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour." And you know, just as Rene was assaulted while she was alone and not at all ready for it, we are most prone to attack when we are alone, or not in the safety of a body of believers, and not at all ready for it by being untrained in the Word that teaches us what to "watch out for" and how to fight back.

So may we be ever vigilant today and every day, to watch out for the enemy that seeks to destroy both our bodies and our spirits. Because as Billy Graham writes, "The devil will try to discourage you, to divert you; he will seek to dilute your testimony; he will attempt anything to destroy your relationship to Christ and your influence upon others." We must be ready.

Heavenly Father, thank you for the reminder that spiritual attacks can come out of nowhere and, if we aren't careful, destroy us. Help us to be trained in the Word to fight them and to be linked to a body of believers that will lift us up, keep us focused onYou and join us in the fight when necessary. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Someone cares

"Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you." 1 Peter 5:7

Gabe Proctor

Earlier this week it was announced that former NCAA champion, Gabe Proctor, was found dead on Saturday at his parents' home in Lyndonville, Vermont. In a statement, the family said, "Gabe had a desperate illness from which he could find no escape-severe depression. As a result, he took his own life." Only 27, this young runner who was said to have a heart "as big as all the world" and who had won many championships and awards succumbed to a disease that the CDC estimates affects 1 out of 20 Americans.

And while there may be many things that can cause depression, or a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest, the Bible is very clear that we don't have to hold those feelings in or carry around the burdens or reasons behind them. You see, Christ invites every believer to cast their "anxiety on him". He wants us to lay ALL our cares down because it's the little things that we hold on to and allow to hurt us that lead to the big feelings that no one cares for us and there is no hope for things to ever get better-which couldn't be further from the truth! The truth is... there is Someone who loves us no matter what we have done or how unworthy or hopeless we might feel or might have even been told we are.

And there is always hope because that "Someone" is Jesus Christ, the Great Physician, who has the power to heal all wounds and hurts and restore us completely. Won't you let Him do that today?

Heavenly Father, thank you for loving us so much that you would send your Son to die for us. Help us to know that He died for each one of us and that each of us is worthy to live a life free from the pain and sadness of depression. Help those who are hurting reach out to get the help they need and help us to be those people that will show them the love of Christ. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

The right motives

"When you give to someone in need, don't do as the hypocrites do--blowing trumpets in the synagogues and streets to call attention to their acts of charity! I tell you the truth, they have received all the reward they will ever get." Matthew 6:2 NLT

Pictured left to right – James Stafford Allen and Sam Stafford Allen who took on the outstanding challenge of the notorious Marathon of the Sands. Picture: SenseJames and Sam Stafford Allen, two brothers from Castle Acre, England, ran 156 miles through the Sahara desert last month to raise money for a national disability charity called Sense that helps people, like their sister (who is blind), live full independent lives. James, 31, and Sam, 32, undertook a year-long training program before completing the equivalent of six marathons in six days when they ran the Marathon des Sables, aka "the toughest foot race on Earth". James later said, "To prepare yourself for the mental challenge for something as physically testing as this, you have to have the right motivation for doing so."
And when it comes to having the right motivation for doing good deeds or helping others, the Bible warns us to not "do as the hypocrites do" and be people who do good acts for appearances only. You see, when we do acts of charity only to be noticed and acknowledged by others, we become "hyprocrites". And even if our actions are good, the motives behind them are still hollow and you can be sure that the praise of men will be "all the reward" we will ever get.
So may we check our motives and check them often, so that we will do all things for the glory of God and the good of others with a pure heart and for the right reasons.
Heavenly Father, thank you for the reminder that our motives for serving you and helping others need to be carefully evaluated. Help us to crave the pleasure of doing your will rather than the praises of man. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Make the move

"Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded." James 4:8

Image result for chasm between us pic

As a running coach, I've seen it many times.. the dreaded running 'rut' or, as google dictionary defines it, a habit or pattern of behavior that has become dull and unproductive but is hard to change. And, as I've learned, this condition can come on suddenly or over time. But regardless of its onset, it always ends up in a runner losing their love of running, at least for a while. And if you think you're immune to it, think again. I've seen even the most die-hard runners fall into the trap and left wondering how they can rekindle the flame. Thankfully, the answer to renewing that love is quite simple-sign up for a new and motivating race. This will force a runner to change their routine, reestablish their goals and regain their focus on the prize.

Sadly, if we're not careful, this same pattern of falling into a 'rut' can extend into our spiritual lives as well. Like running, it can come overnight or over a period of time when we just don't feel God's presence or even feel like praying or going to worship service-a time when there seems to be a chasm so wide between us and God that we fear we will never be able to cross it. But thankfully, we don't have to travel the distance alone because God wants to meet us. The Bible tells us so saying, "Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you."

You see when you and I make the choice to move towards God, pursuing him through relentless prayer and Bible study, God will move towards us until there is no longer any 'rut' separating us. So if you're looking to rekindle the flame, change your routine (more Bible study and prayer time), reestablish your goals (to know Christ more and be more like Him) and regain your focus on the prize (eternal life).

Heavenly Father, we thank you for your Word that tells us exactly what it takes to climb out of any spiritual rut we might have let ourselves fall into. I pray that anyone who feels distant from you would pursue you with an unrelenting fervor today until the bridge is gapped and their love for you is restored. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Lift them up

"But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers." Luke 22:32

Image result for person praying

On May 22, 2011, an EF5 twister tore through the quaint little town of Joplin, Missouri and claimed the lives of 161 people. In an effort to restore hope and honor the victims, the Joplin Memorial Marathon was formed the following year and has been held each year since with 2017 to be no exception. So as I checked into my hotel the night before the race, I wasn't surprised when a gentleman asked me if I would be running in the morning. When I responded yes and asked the same of him, I admit I wasn't ready for his answer. "This is the first time we have been back since the tornado. I'm running the 5k in honor of my 16-year-old son who was killed in it." Fighting back tears, I expressed my sincerest sympathies and asked him if he would like to join us for the prerace prayer we had planned in the morning. As his race began 30 minutes after mine, he declined saying he was going to sleep in... but then turned back and said, "Would you please pray for me though?" And after shutting the door to my room, I finally allowed those tears I had been holding back to flow freely as I did what I said I absolutely would do-I prayed right then for my new friend.

And this intercession, or the prayer offered by one person on behalf of another, is the same example of prayer that Jesus gave us to follow when he prayed for Peter. You see, although Jesus knew Peter's faith would falter (denying him three times), he pleaded to the Father that it would, "not fail." And, thanks to the prayer of a friend, Peter "turned back" and went on to be a man of great faith, strengthening his brothers and leading many people to Christ.  That one prayer offered on his behalf changed the course of Peter's life.

And you know, there are lost, lonely and hurting people all around us today in need of prayer-for the one prayer that might change their lives as well. So may you and I be those intercessors that take their needs, wants and hurts to the Throne because as Max Lucado writes, "You are never more like Jesus than when you pray for others. Pray for this hurting world."

Heavenly Father, thank you for your example of what it truly means to love others. Help us to love in the same way, so strongly that we would lift others up in prayer the same way you did Peter. Help us to be bold in and obedient to this calling you have placed on all believers. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Plan B

"And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him." 1 John 5:14,15

While running with a dear friend some time ago, we discussed an important and stressful situation that she had been praying about. While she happily testified that God had answered her prayer, she went on to admit that, although she had been 'trusting' his plan, she had prepared a back up one 'just in case'. We've probably all had that plan B right? I know I have. It's that scheme we plan in our own mind to get what we want just in case God doesn't give it to us? The plan that usually starts with the words, "God, I trust you to answer my prayer but..." But what? We either trust him or we don't right?

When it comes to trusting, the bible tells us that, "this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us." The emphasis here is on His will, not ours. When we ask for things that we want instead of what He wants for us, uncertainty and doubt will most certainly overwhelm us (prompting us to create an alternative strategy). But we can have that confidence or firm trust to say "if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him." You see, prayer is our direct line to God and the way we ask. And it's only through that intercession that we can learn his will for our lives, base our requests upon that knowledge and then trust in that plan. And you can bet that God will reveal it if we seek and ask!

In the words of Billy Graham, "God wants us to know His will and He reveals it to us both through the Bible and through the guidance of His Holy Spirit. Seek God’s will when you pray, and He will help you know it.” And knowing that, my friend, will eliminate any need you and I will have for that back up plan.

Heavenly Father, thank you for being a God who loves us so much that you would allow us direct access to you anytime and anywhere. Knowing that, may we daily speak to you asking and allowing you to reveal your will for our lives. May we then embrace your answer and align our wants to your desires. It's in your precious name we pray, Jesus. Amen.

Fearless

"For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline." 2 Timothy 1:7

Image result for victory pose pic
It was a blessing for so many reasons to meet with my dear friend, Sarah, yesterday morning. Not only was it our last chance to run together and say our goodbyes before the Army relocated her and her family to Virginia,  it was a time when we could share in praising the Great Physician for a day we feared we might never see. You see, nearly a year ago on that very same course, my young friend suffered a mini stroke after a run we shared (very similar to the one we shared yesterday). Following the ordeal and after many tests, Sarah was diagnosed with a heart condition that warranted immediate surgery and one doctors said should have killed her many years ago. Was it a miracle that she made a complete recovery with no signs of ever suffering a stroke? You bet it was.

And while this woman of great faith would have loved to say she had no fear while waiting for her life-saving surgery, the thought of leaving her children without a mother, she said, left her overwhelmed with it. So overwhelmed, in fact, that a close friend took notice and asked, "Where does fear come from?"  To which Sarah, now reminded of God's goodness, replied, "Not from my God." Not from my God?  No truer statement was ever made as the Bible tells us that, "God has not given us a spirit of fear.. but of power."

You know there will be times in each of our lives that we will experience some type of fear. Perhaps it's fear about our health, fear about not making ends meet or the fear of just not being good enough? Whatever it may be, we would do good to remind ourselves that fear is not from God. Because as sons and daughters of the Lord Most High, you and I have been given the spirit of power. So let's start living that way!

Heavenly Father, thank you for your Word that tells us that you will never leave us or forsake us. Help us to remember that when our heart or mind is overcome with doubt and trepidation. Remind us that the devil is the giver of fear but you are the giver of eternal life that no circumstance could ever steal, Help us to keep our eyes on You. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Avoid the discussion

"As I urged you when I went into Macedonia, stay there in Ephesus so that you may command certain people not to teach false doctrines any longer or to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies. Such things promote controversial speculations rather than advancing God’s work—which is by faith." 1 Timothy 1:3,4

Image result for people talking pic

In the new book Fitter Faster, health journalist Robert J. Davis and celebrity fitness trainer Brad Kolowich, Jr. exposed nine common exercise myths that are completely unnecessary and maybe even counterproductive such as stretching beforehand to prevent injuries, working-out on an empty stomach to burn more fat and downing fluids even when we're not thirsty. Not only are these practices ineffective, they take time away from the work-out and exercise we should be doing. The point is, they said, exercise advice can be misleading so it is wise for people to guard themselves against any widely held but false beliefs or ideas.

And while following myths might deter our fitness goals, devoting ourselves to them by engaging in religious speculation or pointless theological arguments can have far disastrous effects. Paul knew that when he urged Timothy to warn the people at Ephesus not to teach false doctrines or get caught up in pointless controversies or conversations about them. You see, Paul also knew that doing so would only take time. energy and attention away from the thing they should be doing, promoting the Gospel and "advancing God's work".

And you know, just as we should avoid meaningless discussions, we would do well to avoid anything or anybody that keeps us from doing God's work. Wouldn't you agree? In other words, let us not get side-tracked in our mission to stay on-track.

Heavenly Father, thank you for your Word that warns us to stay focused on your mission for us that we might not get sidetracked by the things of this world. Give us a hunger for your Word that we would recognize false doctrine immediately and steer clear away from it. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Linked together

"From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work." Ephesians 4:16

MitoCanada's linked running practicing for their world-record attempt of most runners linked to complete a marathon

On May 28 at the Calgary Marathon, a group of 150 runners will attempt to break the Guiness World Record for the "most runners linked to complete a marathon." This attempt, they say, will be logistically complicated as all the runners will be attached at the waist with flexible medical tubing and move in 10 "3x5" pods (three runners across and five deep) with each pod joined to the next by a length of tubing. The runners, they say, will have to be of similar paces, unified in their bathroom habits and mindful to communicate stops, slowdowns and other needs between themselves and with the other pods.

In other words, each runner will have to do their part while working closely and in sync with the others to ensure the victory of everyone as a whole. And the body of Christ is the same way. To ensure the success of "the whole body" or the Church, you and I must link up allowing love to be the "tubing" that joins us, and work closely together to ensure the success of the group as a whole. You see it's only when "each part does its work" that the whole body will 'run smoothly' and be successful, growing and building itself up in love.

Think of it this way... if even one runner decided to go a different pace or direction or even completely stop or step out of line, it would disrupt the whole group right? That's why it's so crucial for the success of the "whole body" that every one of us work together and with one purpose.

Heavenly Father, thank you for the reminder that, if we are to be successful as your Church, that we have to be united in love with the common goal of growing and maturing as a group. Help us to realize what an impact a group of Christians like that could make on the world. It would surely be better than any world record. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

It takes hard work

"All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty." Proverbs 14:23

Image result for tired runner pics

Ten months ago, Sarah Mendel, a 25-year-old registered nurse who is 4'9", weighed 217 pounds and was miserable. Knowing that she needed to make a change, she made a commitment to eat healthier and totally changed her diet by adding more vegetables and cutting out processed foods. Three months later she added running to her routine and now runs four times a week, has completed many 5k races and just recently completed her first half marathon. Mendel, who has made exercise a priority and now weighs in at 128 pounds, said "hard work" is the secret to her success.

You know the Bible also has something to say about the benefits of working hard when it tells us that, "All hard work brings a profit," but warns us that "mere talk leads only to poverty." You see, you and I could talk about our desires, ambitions and dreams for hours every day-how we would like to get healthier, lose weight, get a better job or make any number of changes we know need to be made in our lives-but without "hard work" our intentions would be only "mere talk" and give us no results.

So if you're looking to make a change today, what will you do? Talk about it some more or get to work on it? The choice is yours but you can be sure that there is no success where there is no one working hard to achieve it because, as David Bly writes, "Striving for success without hard work is like trying to harvest where you haven't planted." It simply yields no results.

Heavenly Father, thank you for your Word that clearly tells us that hard work is the key to accomplishing our purpose both physically and spiritually. May we make the commitment today to be the person you are calling us to and work hard to achieve it. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Salt it lightly

"Conduct yourselves with wisdom toward outsiders, making the most of the opportunity. Let your speech always be with grace, as though seasoned with salt, so that you will know how you should respond to each person." Colossians 4:5,6 NASB

Related image

In an article published by Dumb Runner, Mallory Keaton, 36, relayed the account of her first (and probably last) dinner date with 42-year-old Nick on Tuesday night. Prompted by photos on Nick's social media, Mallory made the mistake of asking him about his running habits and if he had ever run a marathon. And that's when witnesses say the date went sour as Nick replied with a 16-minute monologue chronicling in detail his past three marathons including his 5k splits, the weather conditions and so on. And as if that weren't enough to spoil her appetite, he went on to a summation of the debate of maximalist and minimalist footwear. It's no wonder that Mallory soon asked for the check and ended the date early is it?

And you know as much as I admire Nick's passion for the sport and his attempt to convince his date to share his love for running, coming on too strong had the opposite effect. Yet coming on too strong is the same mistake many of us make when telling others about Jesus (with the same disastrous consequences). Which is why the Bible is crystal-clear that our speech should always be graceful, tasteful and balanced "as though seasoned with salt". You see, just as too much salt can ruin the taste of the most wonderful meal, coming on too strong can ruin the taste of the most wonderful Message. Instead we would do best to salt our message lightly and courteously making it so "tasty" to the individual listener that they would ask for more.

So may we always make the most of every opportunity to tell others about Jesus but "conduct ourselves with wisdom" while doing so that our message might be individually seasoned to each persons' taste. In other words, let us be careful not to come on too strong.

Heavenly Father, thank you for your Word that gives us everything we need to be an effective witness in this world. Help us to always be open to situations where we could tell others about Christ but to do it in a way that makes the listeners crave more. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!!!

The secret to it

"And “don’t sin by letting anger control you.” Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry, for anger gives a foothold to the devil." Ephesians 4:26,27

On April 30, Betty and Bob Kinder, 84 and 88, became internet sensations when they crossed the finish line of the Oklahoma City Memorial 5k together. Not only was the photo popular because the couple who have been married for 60 years was holding hands but because Bob wore a hat that read "Sexy Old Fart." And while I have no doubt that having a sense of humor has played a part in the success of their long marriage, they say the real secret to their success is never going to bed angry, and always saying, "I love you."

And you know this is not only good advice for married couples, it is good advice for all of us. The Bible tells us so when it gives us this warning, ""don't sin by letting anger control you." Don't let the sun go down while you are still angry, for anger gives a foothold to the devil." You see uncontrolled anger can cause us to say and do things that might hurt others and destroy relationships. And if kept bottled up inside, cause us to become bitter and resentful thereby giving the devil an opportunity to divide our marriages and friendships. That's why it's so vitally important to deal with our anger immediately and most certainly before the sun goes down.

Can you imagine how much grief we would spare ourselves and others by handling our anger properly? So if you're angry with someone right now, won't you work to resolve your differences before the day ends? After all, the quicker you and I work to mend a relationship the better the chances it will be restored.

Heavenly Father, thank you for your Word that clearly tells us the consequences of letting our anger control us. And while we know there will be times when we will be angry anyway, we pray for the wisdom to handle it properly before we hurt others or destroy relationships. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Go the extra mile

"If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles." Matthew 5:41

Image result for mike bruno pittsburgh marathon pics

In honor of his daughter who was born blind, Mike Bruno ran two Pittsburgh marathons while blindfolded and tethered to a friend to guide him. He then later pushed his daughter, Cassie, for a third time to complete 26.2 miles. But what he did last Saturday was what prompted the headline, "Father goes the extra mile for daughter at Pittsburgh Marathon." This time Mike gave the tether to his daughter and guided her through the one mile Children's Marathon race where they embraced at the finish line. Mike says not only does exercise strengthen his bond with his daughter, who also has autism, but he hopes their story will raise funds and promote awareness, acceptance and inclusion for everyone with disabilities.

You know when it comes to doing more than what's expected, as Mike did to help others besides his daughter, the Bible tells us that you and I are to always do more than what is asked of us saying,"If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles." And you can be sure that doing more than what is required is no easier now than it was in Jesus' day when Roman soldiers had the authority to force civilians to carry their heavy loads. Thankfully for them though, Roman law said that a person only had to do this service for one mile and then he was free to go. Since they had no Garmins then, the mile was measured in steps, one thousand to be exact. And you could probably bet they counted every single one of them and when they reached one thousand, they stopped.... done and not one step more.

So why would Jesus ask them to carry it another mile then? Because as followers, that's what sets us apart. You see most everyone will do what's required of them rather than face the consequences of disobedience. But how many others will sacrifice to go the "extra mile"? To do what is not required of them simply to show the love of Christ? Will you?

Heavenly Father, thank you for the greatest example of what it means to go the extra mile, your son Jesus who made the ultimate sacrifice of dying on the cross for sinners just like you and me. Help us to love others like that, that we might do more than what's expected and thereby show the love of Christ to them. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Close does not count

"On hearing this, Jesus told him, “You still lack one thing: Sell everything you own and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow Me.” But when the ruler heard this, he became very sad, because he was extremely wealthy." Luke 18:22,23

Image result for kipchoge pic

On Saturday, May 6, 2017, CNN reported that Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge "came tantalizingly close to breaking one of the most coveted frontiers left in athletics, running a full marathon in two hours and 25 seconds." This was the closest anyone has ever come to running the "coveted" sub-two-hour marathon and came only after years of research, design and planning by the Nike Breaking2 project (launched in 2014) and months of training and hard work by the athletes involved. So even though Kipchoge was closer to triumph than any of us will ever be, missing the mark by less than one second per mile, being close doesn't count as it will not be recorded as a success.

And the same can be said of our efforts to enter Heaven. The Bible illustrates this with the story of a rich young man who asked Jesus what it would take to enter into eternal life. When Jesus answered the man that he would have to keep the commandments not to commit adultery, steal, murder or bear false witness and to honor his father and mother, the man joyously replied that he had done all that since his youth. But Jesus, knowing the man's heart, said, "You still lack one thing.." and told him to sell all he had and give it to the poor. The man's joy quickly turned to sorrow as this was the one thing he would not do "because he was extremely wealthy."  He was so close wasn't he? After all, he had done everything else expected of him right? But as the story shows, close doesn't count.

Perhaps you're like this young man today? Close to surrendering your life and following Jesus but withholding something that means more? That one thing Jesus is calling you to give up? Perhaps it's money, status, habits or pride? Whatever it is, is it worth missing out on eternal life? You see, aspiring to get to Heaven will only get us close if we "still lack one thing."

Heavenly Father, thank you for your Word that tells us without a doubt that only those willing to give up everything for you will receive eternal life. Help us to identify those things that we might be holding on to that we view as more important and ask you to give us the strength to let them go that we might one day join you in Heaven. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Do it today

"Indeed, how can people avoid what they don't know is going to happen? None of us can hold back our spirit from departing. None of us has the power to prevent the day of our death..." Ecclesiastes 8:7,8 NLT

Nearing the end of my morning run and enjoying the sun that finally made it's appearance after nearly a week of torrential rain and thunderstorms, I paid no real attention to the farm truck headed in my direction. That is until it was so close that I could see what was about to happen. Hitting the huge puddle at the exact moment the vehicle passed me, a muddy mixture nearly five foot high struck me out of nowhere. "I surely didn't see that coming," I thought to myself as I shook it off and wiped the water from my eyes. But life is like that isn't it? Within seconds, it can change.

The events of the past weekend surely reminded me of that too. You see on Wednesday afternoon, my daughter and I attended the funeral of an 18-year-old boy who died as a result of the floods that swept through our state over the weekend. Headed home from prom Friday night, he surely never saw it coming as he drove through the water crossing that claimed his life. And, unfortunately, as this tragedy reminds us all, no one knows what will happen to them in the next minute, hour or day and no one has the power to prevent the day of their death. But there's one thing we do have power over and that's making the most out of every moment we are given.

So knowing that disaster and misfortune can strike out of nowhere, I urge you to take a moment today to tell the people you love that you love them. Call your mother, hug your children tight, make someone smile, mend a broken friendship and tell someone about Jesus. Live with purpose and make an impact on someone's life today because, honestly, today may be all you have.

Heavenly Father, thank you for the reminder that life can change or end in an instant. Help us to truly understand that, that we might live boldly loving people, literally, like there's no tomorrow. And Lord, I pray for the family and loved ones of this young boy that they might find peace in the midst of sorrow and that they would turn to you for comfort. It's in your precious name we pray, Jesus. Amen.

Remind me

"I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago. I will consider all your works and meditate on all your mighty deeds.” Psalm 77:11,12

Upon hearing of the cancellation of the race I was signed up for last Saturday, I checked the radar for a break in the onslaught of rain and lightning that would make the two-hour drive home easier. When I spotted my best chance, I loaded up my car, got in and then... nothing. The battery was completely dead and by the time I got a jump start and headed out, the storm was so intense I could barely see in front of me. Feeling panic arise I called out to my daughter in the backseat, "Remind me of how faithful God has been to us." You see, right then I needed to remember. I needed to be reminded that there was no need to worry. And as her little voice began, "Remember when...." and recalled the many times God had been there for our family, I smiled and pressed on.

You know when trials or storms come upon us, it's easy to panic if we don't take a moment to reflect back. The Israelites knew that and during their difficulties declared, "I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago. I will consider all your works and meditate on your mighty deeds." These memories of God's faithfulness reminded them that the Lord was capable, trustworthy and faithful. And by meditating and really pondering on the things he had done for them in the past, they could trust that he would provide the same care now and in the future.

Perhaps you are experiencing a period of trouble, panic or doubt today? If you are, I urge you to do as I did and take a moment to remind yourself of the good things God has done in your life and remember when. Remember when he saved you. Remember all the times he rescued you and remember all the times he provided just what you needed at just the right time and when he made a way when there seemed to be no way. You see, recalling all the Lord has done in the past will surely give us all the courage to press on and move forward.

Heavenly Father, thank you for your love and faithfulness you have displayed to your children. When we get panicky or doubtful, help us to remember the good things you have done in the past that we might renew our strength and have the faith to face new trials. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus, Amen,

Avoid that sin

"But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh." Galatians 5:16

devil runner

In a recent article published by Runner's World, titled "7 Deadly Sins of Running Your First Marathon", the writer gave tips on how to abstain from falling into the trap of the 'running devil' and committing the unthinkable acts every runner should avoid-eating too much (gluttony), buying too much swag at the expo (greed), not training well (sloth), forgetting to lube your intimate parts (lust), going out too fast (pride), skipping the ice bath (wrath) and sipping Haterade when friends have a better race than you (envy). All joking aside, they made a great point when they said, "The running devil works in mysterious ways. And as if 26.2 miles isn’t hard enough, he’s thrown in some sneaky obstacles to throw you off your game."

The same can be said of life you know. And as if following Christ in a sinful world wasn't hard enough, the devil will most certainly throw in some sneaky obstacles to get us to sin or throw us off our game. But the Bible tells us that you and I can avoid these pitfalls and temptations by doing one thing... walking by the Spirit. But what does that mean exactly? It means choosing to meet with God daily through prayer, worship and Bible study to condition our hearts and minds to be sensitive to the Holy Spirit's promptings. You see, it's only when we know God intimately that he can richly dwell in us and we can discern his will and, thereby, not "gratify the desires of the flesh."

So just as we train for a race by running consistently, let us train in the Word by reading consistently. This is most definitely the only way to avoid those seven deadly sins on and off the racecourse.

Heavenly Father, thank you for your Word that is our best defense in avoiding those sneaky obstacles we are sure to encounter every day. Help us to realize the absolute importance of meeting with you daily that we might allow the Holy Spirit to guide us so we would not be tempted to give in to the desires of the flesh. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Use the gift

"God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another." 1 Peter 4:10

Image result for god gives gift pic

Katie Mackey, 29, won her first national title last week at the U.S. road mile championship in Des Moines Iowa with a time of 4:37:00. About the win, Katie admitted that she was glad she had made the choice to return to racing after seriously considering retirement in 2016 when her Olympic Trials ended in disappointment. She said it happened after much soul searching when she, realized there was a deeper connection to her career, based on her Christian faith saying, "I feel like it's this gift that's been given to me. I really wanted to do something good through my running." Since that moment, Macky has viewed winning and success differently and has focused on just doing her best and opening a running camp for teenage girls to give back and use all that she has learned.

While it's obvious that Katie has a gift to run fast, it was only after she recognized and acknowledged that the gift was from God and for God that her skills could be used to benefit others. And while each person's gift might not be so obvious, you can be assured that we all have one and that they are to be faithfully used to "serve one another." Looking to discover or use your gift? The best place to start is looking to fill a need in your church or your community. By doing this you might just find you are talented in areas you might not have ever expected.

So let us go about each day with purpose, using our God-given skills and abilities to serve others because as Tom Krause writes, "Your purpose in life is to use your gifts and talents to help other people. Your journey in life teaches you how to do that."

Heavenly Father, thank you for giving us each one of us gifts to serve others. Help us to realize what those are and use them to the absolute best of our ability that we might help others and, more importantly, help bring them to the foot of the cross. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.
