Our testimonies have power

"Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people, “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Messiah?'" John 4:1-28-29 NIV

Josh Clark, the founder of the first Couch to 5k program, admitted that he never liked running in an interview on Monday with This Morning. In fact, he said, “before all of this began, I hated running. So much. Like with a white-hot heat. My lungs burned, and my legs screamed. It was a cruel, endless torture… A bad breakup back in the early 1990s got me running. It was punishing and painful, and if I’m honest, maybe that was the point. But then something crazy happened: it started to feel good. At some point, the boring awful discomfort gave way to real pleasure — physically, mentally, even spiritually.” At that point, Josh said, he caught "the zeal of the converted" and wanted to share his discovery with others--thus he wrote the first C25K schedule and the rest is history.  Thousands of people have now completed the program with great success thanks to Josh's willingness to share his story.

And you know, hearing the story of someone whose life has been changed in some dramatic way has the power to cause others to follow. Consider the story of the Samaritan woman who met Jesus at the well. The Bible tells us that Jesus revealed the details of her sinful life causing her to believe that He might just be the awaited Messiah. Rather than keeping that revelation to herself, she "went back to the town" (I envision her running back to the town!) and invited everyone to come and see this man who claimed to be the One they had all been waiting for. And it was because of the woman's testimony that, "Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him."

So if you think your testimony doesn't have the power to cause someone to seek Jesus, think again my friend. No matter how unexciting you think your story might be, it is the story of your redemption! A story that should ignite your zeal to see others come to know the One who is still redeeming those who accept Him as Savior today. So tell it.

Heavenly Father, thank You for giving each and every one of us a story. Open up doors for us to share that story with others Lord that they might be led to You because of it. Help us to be bold Lord, remembering that people will die in their sins if they don't seek You. It's in Your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!!!

BASS PRO MIDWEEK MOTIVATION-The power of consistency

Hello runner friends!
Welcome back to the Bass Pro Fitness Series
MIDWEEK M😊TIVATI😊N blog.

Now let's get started by talking about something that can make or break your goals--running or otherwise--for 2021.

CONSISTENCY

Let's look at what it means to be consistent though and how striving to obtain consistency above perfection can help keep you motivated to achieve those things you placed on your list of “what I will accomplish in 2021”.

As defined, a person who is consistent acts or does something the same way over time. They are not perfect but are unchanging in nature, standard or effect over time. Over time is an adverb phrase that describes something which happens gradually. It is not used to describe long hours at a job or an extended period of play in an athletic game. Over time means something happened gradually, progressively, with time, consistent, by degrees, little by little, bit by bit, steadily, slowly but surely. Here is a great example... over time, water carved the Grand Canyon into the landscape of what is now Arizona.

And perhaps one of the greatest examples of something great being achieved or accomplished over time is the building of Rome. After all, it wasn't as they say built in a day right? Of course not. In fact, it took time; lots of time and lots and lots of bricks. Which is why the process of building serves as a great reminder to keep laying those bricks--or to keep doing those workouts. After all, each run gets you closer to your ultimate goal. Think about it... you're not going to run a marathon overnight or in the course of a week even. Good things take time to accomplish and are the result of consistent efforts over time... they are the result of laying one brick on top of another, and then another and then another... day after day after day after day until the building that you envisioned (which is you) is completed. And even then, the work is never done. There's always going to be that pesky maintenance, upkeep, repair and remodel.

So envision yourself then as a work in progress. What do you want to look like when the last brick is laid? What do you want to feel like as you build yourself up? And most importantly, what is it that you want to ultimately achieve?  No matter what your answers are, being consistent in your daily habits is the only way to make it happen. And remember... one missed run, one neglected rest day or the occasional cheat meal won't ruin the work you may have put in or defer the work you are trying to achieve. Consistently grant yourself the grace to be imperfect and to fall short from time to time because it WILL happen. The important thing is to be consistent MOST of the time and to pick yourself back up each time you aren't.

So in an effort to inspire you to remain consistent and persistent in working towards your goals, check out these motivational quotes.....

I always loved running…it was something you could do by yourself, and under your own power. You could go in any direction, fast or slow as you wanted, fighting the wind if you felt like it, seeking out new sights just on the strength of your feet and the courage of your lungs. – Jesse Owens

Today I will do what others won’t so tomorrow I can do what others can’t.

As athletes we have ups and downs. Unfortunately you can’t pick the days they come on. – Leena Kastor

So there you have it friends. I hope you were inspired to start building today that person you want to be tomorrow or a year from now. Almost any goal that you have--whether it's to run a 5k, 10k, half-marathon, full-marathon, technical trail run or even an ultra-marathon--can be achieved by consistent effort and relentless perseverance. If you’ve ever watched a bricklayer, you know that small things done consistently over time make something worthwhile in the end—knowledge that makes it easier to get started and stick with it, even when it’s challenging. So lace up those shoes and start laying those bricks.

Happy Running!!!

He gives strength to the weary

"He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak." Isaiah 40:29 NIV

In an article published yesterday by Well+Good, Tehrene Fermin wrote, "After months of uncertainty, people are ready to change something they do have control over: their health and well-being." The write-up went on to say that, according to a survey done by the personal training service FYT, three in four Americans intended to exercise more in 2021 than they did in 2020–something they would accomplish by exercising at home. In 2020, we found people developed a new appreciation for at-home workouts. Over the past 9 months, the daily views of “home workouts” on YouTube increased by 515 percent—and Well+Good’s fitness videos have had 350 percent more views this year than last. I guess you could say that people are really getting serious about their workouts huh?. And that's a wonderful thing considering strength training can benefit a person's heart, improve their balance, build up their bones, and help them lose weight.

And you know, while taking advantage of online workout videos at home can definitely help you get fitter and physically stronger, they can't give you the hope, peace, comfort, resolve and spiritual strength you might desperately be in need of right now. Think about it... life is a challenge in the best of times. But now, at a time when our nation is in an unprecedented upheaval, the added stresses of each day might have you feeling weak, worn out and ready to give up. But guess what? You don't have to feel that way! God can help. The Bible tells us that "He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak."

So if you're feeling like you can't take one more step today, much less make it to the finish line, remember that you have a God you can cry out to my friend. A God who loves you and longs to give you the strength you need to make it through today, tomorrow and everyday thereafter. Simply seek His presence and say, "Lord I need You to strengthen me today."

Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding us that we will all have days when we feel worn down and fatigued from the stresses of this world. When this happens Lord, help us to instinctively turn to You, confident that You can and will give us the strength, hope, peace, resolve and comfort we need to get through this life. It's in Your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Embrace those changes in plan

“But God said to me, ‘You shall not build a house for My name, because you are a man of war and have shed blood.’” 1 Chronicles 28:3 NASB

“No pics, but I ran 7 miles on the treadmill this morning. Looks like you were having fun out there. I was out trying to get 92.1 back on, but our power is so low from ice in Camdenton, that it's not coming in clear and it's trying to pick up 91.7 from Salem. It should be better by tomorrow afternoon.” Those were the words my dear longtime running buddy and Director of my favorite Christian radio station posted over the weekend after seeing that I, along with lots of other runners, got out to enjoy the beauty of the previous days’ winter storm that knocked out the signal to the station while he was busy working to get it back on. “Just goes to show,” I later thought, “that our plans don't always go ‘as planned’”.

And you know, as we enter 2021, we would all do well to consider that many of our plans will not go ‘as planned’ this year. In a time of unprecedented unrest in our nation and our world, we certainly don’t even know what tomorrow will bring... right? In fact, even those who follow Christ are not exempt from changes in plans. Consider David who was known as a man after God's own heart. He desperately wanted to build the temple of the Lord. And although his motives were pure, the Lord changed his plans saying, "You shall not build a house for My name, because you are a man of war and have shed blood.” Instead, David was told, his son Solomon would be the one to build the temple. Rather than sulk at hearing this change of plans though like many of us would, David got busy gathering the items Solomon would need to finish the work.

So as we begin this new year, let us make David’s reaction to God’s change of plans the model for us to follow. When things do not go as we planned—when God closes a door—let us continue to praise Him as we joyfully move on in a new direction. And rather than complain about what we can’t do, let us do what we can with all our might, giving God the glory for all good things, even those that don't go 'as planned.'

Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding us that following You doesn’t always mean that our lives will be perfect or that we will always be granted the desires of our heart. Help us to trust that Your ways are higher and better and to smile in the midst of our changed plans. Thank You for knowing what's best for us and for working all things for our good and Your glory Lord. It’s in Your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Outdo yourself this year

"Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Outdo yourselves in honoring one another." Romans 12:10 BSB

"Ending 2020 with a smooth 3.2 miles... found this gem of a sign..." my friend Sara posted yesterday while out on her run in sunny Florida and meditating on the past year. "Had an opportunity to pray with a neighbor too... may we continue to have opportunities to be light and love with those we meet every day we wake up on this side of the green grass." If you know Sara like I do, you'd know that this is a typical run for her. Stopping to pray with a neighbor? Without hesitation. Looking for opportunities to love others? Always. And wouldn't it be great if having an attitude focused on serving others was our goal for 2021 too? Better yet, with all of us posting the miles we ran in 2020 along with our goals of running more in the new year, wouldn't it be great if everyone's goal was to "outdo" themselves not just in running but in “honoring one another?”

And you know, when it comes to giving honor to another person, the world teaches us that honor, or great esteem, should be reserved for those people who have earned it in a way the world deems respectful. Perhaps by being a good parent, teacher, activist, employer or even a star athlete? But the Bible teaches us to honor or show respect to people simply because they, like us, were created in God's image, are loved by Him, and are our brothers and sisters in Christ. And we do this by being "devoted to one another in brotherly love," which is the kind of love we show that is genuine, constant and expectant of nothing in return.

So as you and I thank the Lord for the many blessings bestowed on us in 2020, may our prayer for the new year be for God to grant us innumerable opportunities to be the "light and love" this world so desperately needs to see and feel. Let us "outdo" ourselves in 2021!

Heavenly Father, thank You for another year. Regardless of how the year might have looked to those who don't know You as Savior, believers everywhere saw how You worked it all for their good and for Your glory. Lord we love You and we ask that You stir our hearts to be light and love to a dark world in 2021. Let this be the year that a revival takes place in our nation and around the world. It's in Your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

No reason to be daunted

"Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand." Isaiah 41:10 NLT

In an articled published yesterday by Runner's World Magazine titled "2020 Was a Crazy Running Year...," data from popular workout tracking apps and devices from across the nation was collected and studied. Interestingly enough, the data showed that runners in the United States logged more miles outside than ever before, more people took up running for the first time than ever before, and we runners continued to race (virtually of course) despite the lockdowns and limitations imposed on us as a result of the COVID pandemic. "Runners were undaunted," by the interruption the article said, "With a little creativity, we were able to continue to lace up and reap all the health benefits that running confers."

And you know, while many people are looking for 2021 to be the year things "return to normal," we will probably never experience “normal” again. In fact, many of those runners who were "undaunted" in 2020 are facing the new year with apprehension, fear and dread. Between COVID, the elections, and the unrest and upheaval in our country (and in our world), many people are disheartened and discouraged. But guess what? If you have put your faith in Jesus Christ, you can and should have the peace that surpasses all understanding despite all of it. Why? Because God has promised to be with you, to strengthen you, to help you and to uphold you no matter what you might be facing.

So as you and I look to the new year, may we smile knowing that everything is going to be okay... really okay. Not because the world will be at peace, because it won't be... ever. But because we can have peace in all situations because our God is always with us... even to the end of the age.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the lessons we learned in 2020 and the resilience and faith we gained as we had to look to You for new ways to do things. Thank You for promising to always be with us and to give us the strength to face anything. Help us to stay encouraged by remembering that through You we are victorious. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

BASS PRO MIDWEEK MOTIVATION-Be a Role Model

Hello runner friends!
Welcome back to the Bass Pro Fitness Series
MIDWEEK M😊TIVATI😊N blog. Now let's get started by talking about something that a big percentage of runners around the world are talking about right now... New Year's Resolutions, aka the promises people make to themselves to start doing something good or to stop doing something bad on the first day of the year.

But before we go any further, check out these top
Running Resolutions listed by Runner's World Magazine for 2021.

1. Start Running Regularly
2. Diversify Your Diet
3. Set a 5K PR
4. Stay Motivated
5. Qualify for Boston
6. Do Some Yoga (For Real This Time)
7. Run a Trail Race
8. Give Back

How many of those have you already done? If you've done at least one, you're in the perfect position to help someone else. How? By being a role model. Bet you never thought about that did you? Well consider this... people are always watching what you do. Scary thought huh? It can be unless you allow that knowledge to motivate you to not only stay on the right path but to be better every day; thereby inspiring others to improve as well. Striving to be someone others can look up to will keep you motivated and motivate others too!! That's a win-win isn't it??

This is Rebecca's Woohoo Crew Running Group- everyone here had run an at least one marathon and one ultra in 2020, inspiring Rebecca (3rd to left) to do the same
So when it comes to the power of being a person others look to for inspiration--whether you even realized you were one--check out what Rebecca Ito said inspired her to complete her first ultra marathon on Saturday. It will surely have you considering how your actions affect others. What makes the story even more amazing though, is that Rebecca went from running a half marathon to an ultramarathon in a very short period. Why? Because Rebecca was surrounded by people she looked up to as role models; people that strived to be the best they could be with no idea that they were being watched.

When asked why I was doing a 50K Saturday, my reply was, “Because everyone else did it!” I have watched my amazing friends kill it this year in race after race. I have been with them. I have been behind them. I have watched them. I watched as they did their first marathon and the joy they felt accomplishing such a task. I watched as they completed their first 50K in the worst possible conditions and, again, the joy they felt. Even though I could not participate in those races, I loved seeing them thrive! I also became determined to be a part of their experiences on a deeper level. I wanted to feel what they felt. I wanted to feel more connected to them. This group of women (The WooHoo Crew) have inspired me repeatedly throughout one of the hardest years many have endured. They have pushed me. They have lectured me. They have loved me. I owed it to them to at least try. Also, to my mother who used to ask me, “If everyone else jumped off a bridge, would you do it?," my answer this time is a
resounding YES!

So there you have it friends... helping others to be better will help you to be better in return. Aspiring to be inspirational will cause others to be inspirational and being encouraging will in turn encourage you! See where I'm going with this? So in 2021, why don't you add "Be a world-changer!" to your list of resolutions? And then strive to change your part of the world in some small way by helping one person at a time. I think you'll be surprised at the benefits and rewards you and those around you will reap.

Happy Running!!!
