"'Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave—just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.'" Matthew 20:26-28
Eliud Kipchoge, long hailed as the greatest marathoner on the planet, added to his list of achievements Sunday by winning the Berlin Marathon in 2 hours, 1 minute, 39 seconds and breaking the world marathon record. And while Kipchoge, a self-professed Christian, has amassed great fame and wealth from his wins, he is described as a humble man who splits his time between his home in Eldorat Kenya, where he lives with his wife and three children, and a training camp where he shares chores with his teammates. Kipchoge is the distance running version of Usain Bolt. He is a wealthy man, but he still scrubs the toilet.
And while Kipchoge may go down in history as the greatest marathoner to have ever lived, Jesus Christ will go down as the greatest Man to have ever lived? Why? Because the King of kings and the great I Am left his throne "not to be served but to serve..." With those words and his example, Jesus challenged the world to reexamine what it means to be or "become great" showing that true greatness doesn't stem from any title or accomplishment but from humbly serving others out of a great love for the Father.
Heavenly Father, thank You for this precious reminder that humbly serving others, especially when no one is looking or we receive no recognition, is the greatest thing we could ever do to show your love to people. Help us to look for ways to serve You that we might draw others to the foot of the Cross because of it. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.
Happy Running!!!
