Behind the scenes

"Yes, there are many parts, but only one body. The eye can never say to the hand, "I don't need you." The head can't say to the feet, "I don't need you." In fact, some of the parts that seem weakest and least important are really the most necessary. " 1 Corinthians 12:20-22 (NLT)

At any given race, especially the larger ones, the race director's name is generally given along with his/her immediate staff. They are almost always publicly acknowledged for their hard work in making it possible for the event to happen. What runners sometimes fail to realize is that it could not have taken place without the aid of countless others, usually volunteers. From the people helping with registration to the ones passing out water along the course, it takes many people assisting to allow the race director to perform his/her duties. Similarly, the same is true in our churches. It takes many volunteers and church staff to make it possible for the Pastor to give his sermon. Yet, they are rarely acknowledged or thanked for their selfless acts of service.

I normally arrive with only minutes to spare for the 9:45 service at my church. I usually walk in, take a pamphlet from the greeter and head to my seat as the worship team starts to play. Yesterday, I arrived at 6:30 a.m. to help set up for the guest speaker, Chris Gillespie (TEAM 413 founder). The pastor had already arrived (who knew he got there at 6am?!!) and was turning on the lights and preparing the sanctuary. By 7:00 a.m. the friendliest door greeter in history arrived to make coffee for everyone. He had brought in 6 dozen donuts and 5 different kinds of coffee creamers (I never knew who did this). Then the members of the band and choir arrived and began setting up and rehearsing for the service. I never dreamed that all this work went into a Sunday service. Just like at a race, the people behind the scenes, the "parts that seem weakest and least important are really the most necessary." They make it possible for the pastor to deliver his sermon to the lost and needy. The "many parts" make up the "one body" and each part is equally important yet not given the same amount of credit. I don't believe I will ever take another service for granted and will surely not miss the chance to thank these volunteers for their kindness and willingness to serve.

Whatever position God has placed you in, if you are serving Him, you are an important part in the body. Smile and know that God chose you for the very position you are filling! And as always, "Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people." Colossians 3:23.

Heavenly Father, thank You for choosing us to serve You. What an honor it is to serve You in any way. You could have chosen anyone and yet You chose us. You chose us for the job and equipped us to fill it. May we use our gifts, skills and time to glorify You and to help our Pastors and others do the job they were called to do. I pray that we all work together as one body, all equally important, to bring glory and praise to your name. In your precious name we pray, Jesus. Amen.

Too busy?

" In everything you do, put God first, and he will direct you and crown your efforts with success." Proverbs 3:6 (TLB)

With the stress and responsibilities of the holidays, it's sometimes hard to fit in everything that needs to be done... especially a run. This is the time of year that it's okay to focus on simply maintaining your fitness rather than improving it. Along with the temptation to skip a workout, many of you might be tempted to skip your time in the Word as well. You might find yourself with more time by doing this but it will be at the expense of your physical, mental and spiritual health. Let me remind you that God is never too busy for us. And if you're too busy for Him, well... you're just too busy. Multitasking just might be the solution you're looking for. Listen to your bible or a sermon on podcast while running. Say your prayers as you enjoy this alone time with God. Praise as you listen to worship music while logging the miles and the smiles. Be creative but, in the words of Nike, just do it.

HOLIDAY RUNNING SUGGESTIONS:

  1. Plan your runs in advance. Look at your schedule for the week and write them in. Having it in your planner makes it more likely to happen.
  2. Focus on maintaining your current fitness level rather than improving it during the holidays. Running three days a week for even 20 to 30 minutes will maintain your current fitness level, relieve stress, and give you more time for holiday obligations.
  3. Shorten your runs. Something is better than nothing! Some running is better than no running at all so rather than eliminate a run completely, cut it short. Base your mileage on the time you have available.
  4. Substitute intensity for duration. When there is no time for a long run, speed up the pace for a short run. This will increase the effectiveness of a short run.
  5. Go with the flow! Be flexible with your runs. Try running at different times of the day so it can fit into your schedule.http://www.runnersworld.com/cold-weather-running/running-tips-for-the-holidays

The bible tells us "that the joy of the Lord is your strength" (Nehemiah 8:10 NIV). Is there anything more joyous than spending time with our Savior? He will keep us strong when we put him first. Matthew 6:33 (NLT) gives us this reminder, "Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need."

Heavenly Father, thank You for meeting us wherever we are and for never being too busy for us. You are the most faithful friend and running partner we could ever have. Give us a longing and urgency to spend time with You everyday so that we might grow in strength and joy. In your precious name we pray, Jesus. Amen.

Give Thanks

"Giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ." Ephesians 5:20

Thankful... what comes to mind when you hear this word? Your home, your family, your church or the ability to run? For some, the answer is a second chance. Six of the american ebola victims gave their first joint interview yesterday. They had survived a virus that is killing thousands of others around the world. What were they thankful for? The lifesaving blood. Let me explain - Dr. Kent Brantly was the first to recover from ebola. As a survivor, his blood now contained precious antibodies that would fight the virus.  "Brantly's blood was then used to cure other patients. But Brantly responded with characteristic modesty, saying: 'I think God saved my life and I have a responsibility to use my life in a way that is glorifying to Him and helpful to other people." http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2850342/American-Ebola-victims-joint-interview-agree-treat-patients-virus-again.html

Talk about a reason for being grateful this Thanksgiving! Each one of these survivors expressed gratitude for their life and for the selfless act of love of Dr. Brantly. By the donation of his blood, others were saved. Do you know that Jesus Christ is the ultimate blood donor? It's only through His blood that we are saved. The bible tells us that the wages of sin is death but, "the blood of Jesus... cleanses us from all sin." 1 John 1:7. This selfless act of love saved us.

When you accepted Jesus Christ into your life, you were given a second chance. There's nothing greater to be thankful for than that. If you're also blessed with a roof over your head, food on the table and family and friends to share it, you have even more reason to celebrate. Give Him the praise He is so worthy of. May God bless you and your family this Thanksgiving.

Heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of your blood that you shed on the cross to save us from our sins. May we realize what a great gift that is - a gift beyond compare and priceless beyond measure. We praise You for your presence in our lives and the blessings You have given us. Giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

Be the hands and feet

"For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home... Then these righteous ones will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you something to drink? Or a stranger and show you hospitality?...  And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!’ (Matthew 25:35-40 NLT)

No doubt many of you will be getting in a long run today in anticipation of the calories you will take in tomorrow. And many others will be welcoming family, preparing pies and decorating for the holidays. What a happy time of year. Sadly enough though, many people won't be sharing the happiness. Depression, poverty and loneliness will prevent millions of people from enjoying this day set aside to "give thanks". When you think about your blessings, Consider this:
  • Major depressive disorder affects approximately 14.8 million American adults, or about 6.7 percent of the U.S. population age 18 and older, in a given year. http://www.dbsalliance.org/site/PageServer?pagename=education_statistics_depression
  • 3. 870 million people worldwide do not have enough food to eat - that means no Thanksgiving dinner. https://www.dosomething.org/facts/11-facts-about-global-poverty
  • One in four Americans said that they have no one with whom they can talk about their personal troubles or triumphs. If family members are not counted, the number doubles to more than half of Americans who have no one outside their immediate family with whom they can share confidences.  http://spectator.org/articles/59230/loneliness-american-society

As you're preparing for Thanksgiving tomorrow, can you think of someone you can help? Someone in need of food, companionship or prayer? You probably need look no further than your own neighborhood. Think of it as the opportunity to be the "hands and feet" of Jesus - to bring Christ to a brother or sister in need. Ronald Reagan once wrote, "We can't help everyone, but everyone can help someone". Will you be that person?

Heavenly Father, as we prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving and give you praise for the good things You have given us, I pray that we would look for ways to help others. May we be generous with our time, resources and encouragement. May we show others the love of Christ through our actions. Open our eyes to see the needs in front of us, the needs of our neighbors and friends. And then give us a heart to fill those needs. In your precious name we pray, Jesus. Amen.

In the Light

"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." Psalm 119:105

This time of year we sure don't have
a whole lot of daylight. Most of us now only have between 10-12 hours of sunlight... leaving no option but to run in the dark if we want to enjoy the fresh air. Living in the country with very few street lights, the only way to do that is with a head lamp or other type of light source. The point is, we can't run in total darkness. It would be dangerous to say the least. However, if we illuminate the path ourselves, we can see "just enough" to navigate the course ourselves.

Walking in spiritual darkness is no different - it's dangerous. In John 11:9-10, Jesus said,  “Are there not twelve hours of daylight? Anyone who walks in the daytime will not stumble, for they see by this world’s light. It is when a person walks at night that they stumble, for they have no light.” Simply put, when we know God and trust Him, we walk in the light - we know His will for our lives and we follow His path to achieve it.  Our walk without Christ can be much like running at night, we walk in the dark by ourselves- we don't know or simply ignore God's will for our life choosing the path of self-reliance instead.  We rely on our own devices to get us through... choosing the world's light and our own skills to wander the path.

Proverbs 4:18-19 tells us that, "The path of the righteous is like the morning sun, shining ever brighter till the full light of day. But the way of the wicked is like deep darkness; they do not know what makes them stumble." Self- reliance is deep darkness - absence of Light and a sure way to stumble. God called us into his "marvelous light" to save us from this darkness. Will you put aside "self" to follow his path today?

Heavenly Father, thank You for lighting the path that leads to eternal life. Help us to resist trying to travel it on our own devices reminding us that we will only stumble in the darkness apart from You. Help us to trust and rely upon You with every step we take. In your precious name we pray, Jesus. Amen.

The greatest Coach

"The steps of a man are established by the LORD, And He delights in his way. When he falls, he will not be hurled headlong, Because the LORD is the One who holds his hand" Psalm 37:24

I recently came across the story of Kayla Montgomery -- who, despite being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, has become one of the best young distance runners in the country:

Kayla Montgomery, 18, was found to have multiple sclerosis three years ago. Defying most logic, she has gone on to become one of the fastest young distance runners in the country — one who cannot stay on her feet after crossing the finish line. Because M.S. blocks nerve signals from Montgomery’s legs to her brain, particularly as her body temperature increases, she can move at steady speeds that cause other runners pain she cannot sense, creating the peculiar circumstance in which the symptoms of a disease might confer an athletic advantage. But intense exercise can also trigger weakness and instability; as Montgomery goes numb in races, she can continue moving forward as if on autopilot, but any disruption, like stopping, makes her lose control. “When I finish, it feels like there’s nothing underneath me,” Montgomery said. “I start out feeling normal and then my legs gradually go numb. I’ve trained myself to think about other things while I race, to get through. But when I break the motion, I can’t control them and I fall.” At the finish of every race, she staggers and crumples. Before momentum sends her flying to the ground, her coach braces to catch her, carrying her aside as her competitors finish and her parents swoop in to ice her legs. Minutes later, sensation returns and she rises, ready for another chance at forestalling a disease that one day may force her to trade the track for a wheelchair. M.S. has no cure. http://www.nytimes.com/2014/03/04/sports/for-runner-with-ms-no-pain-while-racing-no-feeling-at-the-finish.html?_r=0

While this is a wonderful story of what a person can achieve through determination, it wouldn't be possible without her coach, Patrick Cromwell. He encouraged her, believed in her, coached her and was there to catch her after every race. Wouldn't it be great if we all had a coach like that - someone who was there to encourage and strengthen us? There to keep us from falling? We do. God has promised to be with us throughout our race - from the beginning to the end. Like a good coach, God will be there watching, waiting and ready to catch us, "I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you." Psalm 32:8.

Heavenly Father, thank You for your promise to guide us throughout this race. Thank You for keeping your loving eye on us to keep us from falling and carry us when we have lost all strength. May we run the race with everything we have, leaving nothing behind so we might cross the finish line and fall into your arms having served You well. Give us the strength, courage and guidance to persevere and press on. In your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

The gloves

"Your love, O LORD, reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies. Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains, your justice like the great deep. O LORD, you preserve both man and beast. How priceless is your unfailing love! Both high and low among men find refuge in the shadow of your wings. " Psalm 36:5-7

I remember, several years ago, inviting some new runners to a race. It turned out to be a very cold morning and the girls were not prepared. As they stood shivering and blowing into their cupped hands in  a vain attempt to warm them, I excused myself. Several minutes later, I returned with two pairs of gloves and two hats. The gloves were mismatched and the hats crumpled but they were greatly appreciated nonetheless. When they asked me where I had gotten them, I explained the reason why I always carried extra "everything'' in the bag that goes with me anytime I run. Experience. Many times of being unprepared for a change in weather conditions and nearly freezing to death a time or two had turned me into a MacGuyver of sorts.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4 says, "Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God." It was only by my own trouble that I was able to comfort these cold runners (with gloves and a story of God's faithfulness). When we are going through tests and trials, it is so easy to question why God would allow any of it to happen isn't it? That is, until we see the way He "uses it".

Maybe you experienced the loss of a loved one recently? Maybe it was a financial hardship or an illness? Whatever it was, the experience will one day allow you to comfort another in a way you never could have before. Through your trouble, trial or difficulty, you felt the power and comfort only God can give making you better able to share that with someone else. You have an eyewitness account of His love! It's no wonder then that the bible tells us to, "Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds," James 1:2. And yes, I still carry extra gloves.

Heavenly Father, thank You for caring enough about us to work out every detail of our lives. Help us to trust You when we don't know your plan. Help us to trust You when we don't see how our difficulties could ever be used for good. May we find peace in the comfort You give and then offer that same comfort to others through your strength. In your precious name we pray, Jesus. Amen.

Your Love oh Lord - Third Day

False advertising

"Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples." John 13:35

Runners, like most people, can be easily deceived in their pursuit of becoming or looking better by the simple purchase of a product that professes to do it with little effort. Vibram FiveFingers shoes were just another example of that. Remember the minimalist rubber shoes that had compartments for each of your five toes? The ones that offered absolutely no support? Runners and walkers everywhere were sporting them because of their claim to reduce foot injuries and strengthen foot muscles. There was, however, no scientific evidence to confirm the truth of these claims. The result...hundreds of people filing a class action suit against the company for false advertising. This was after the fact of course.

The bible tells us that Satan is the great deceiver, "for he is a liar and the father of lies" and "there is no truth in him." John 8:44. Every day, people are buying into the biggest lie of all and Satan's greatest false advertising campaign - If I'm a good person, I'll go to Heaven. First of all, "There is no one righteous, not even one;" Romans 3:10, and if the only requirement to enter Heaven was to be good, Jesus would never have said, " “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven." And what is God's will?  Romans 12:2 tells us, "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will." In other words, we are to be set apart, different from the world.

The world should know you're a Christian by the way you act. There should be no false advertising claims with a believer. Who you claim to be is who you should actually be... every day of the week. Are you living proof that you are who you say you are?

Heavenly Father, thank You for all the wonderful things You have given us. Thank You for running shoes and sunshine. Thank You for our health and our home. May our eyes be opened to see the false claims of the devil that, through prayer and faith, we may overcome them. Give us strength to love others at all times and be a true disciple of Jesus Christ. In your precious name we pray, Jesus. Amen.

Healthy roots

"Then he said, "I tell you the truth, unless you turn from your sins and become like little children, you will never get into the Kingdom of Heaven." Matthew 18:3

Do you remember as a kid telling someone about your "booboo"? Remember peeling off the band aid, ready to receive some sympathy and maybe a kiss, only to drop your jaw wondering where the mark went? Never claiming to be a graceful runner, I've had my share of cuts, scrapes and road rash. Funny how those cuts and scrapes don't heal as quickly as they used to. Unfortunately, it's a fact that the older we get the longer our wounds take to heal. Physically speaking, many seemingly small cuts and bruises left untreated or ignored, can quickly fester and turn into infection. The same can definitely be said of our spiritual bodies.

Hebrews 12:15 warns to, "Look after each other so that none of you fails to receive the grace of God. Watch out that no poisonous root of bitterness grows up to trouble you, corrupting many." For a plant to be healthy and thrive, it must have a healthy root system - what lies underneath bringing nutrients so the plant can grow. If that root becomes poisonous, the plant will soon wither and die. We are no different. As we age and "grow deeper roots", we are more affected by the many causes of bitterness like anger, envy, unforgiveness and jealousy. Left to fester, bitterness can poison us and those around us very quickly and keep us from living the life for which we were intended - we were made to thrive, "When the righteous thrive, the people rejoice". Proverbs 29:2

It's no wonder then that Jesus instructs us to become more like little children. Don't give bitterness a chance to "grow up". Just as a child would, "Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you." Ephesians 4:32. Now thrive and rejoice!

Heavenly Father, thank You for your presence in our lives. Help us to be more like little children, harboring no bitterness or anger in our hearts so that we might let our wounds be quick to heal and even quicker to forgive those that caused them. Help us to rid our hearts and souls of anything that might keep us from the Kingdom of Heaven. In your precious name we pray, Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!!!

Rejoice, pray, give thanks...repeat.

"Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus." 1 Thessalonians 5:16

A mile is a unit of length most commonly equivalent to 5,280 feet, 1,760 yards or 1,609 Kilometers. By that definition a mile is a mile right? Covering the same distance should require the same effort each time then right? Unfortunately, that isn't the case. All miles are not created equally. Running in the snow yesterday morning required way more effort than the previous one done on flat concrete. And running a mile of hills and trails is probably less appealing than an easy run on a treadmill for most.

Similarly, following Christ will not always be an easy road to travel and many people will simply give up when the course gets difficult or the conditions uncomfortable. 2 Timothy 3:12 tells us that, "everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution." and Acts 14:22 says, "We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God,". Simply put, all followers of Jesus will experience troubles, suffering and pain. It's no wonder then that we can sometimes get discouraged.

So what do you do when you feel like giving up? When you don't think you can take another step? You use the bibles three step plan: Rejoice, Pray and Give Thanks. The hardest battles aren't fought and won on a battlefield but on our knees. So don't back down, bail out or bow down under the pressures of this world but, "be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power." Ephesians 6:10

Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us the strength to persevere when we are weak. Please comfort us with your presence and fill us with your power so we may be more than conquerors. So that we may be strong Christians, unable to be silenced, changing the world every day. In your precious name we pray, Jesus. Amen.

People get ready

“Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. Even so, when you see all these things, you know that it is near, right at the door." Matthew 24:32-33

The calendar says that winter isn't supposed to arrive until December 21st. And isn't the first snow supposed to come after Thanksgiving? Wow! If you were not watching the signs or the forecast you could have really been caught unprepared. As a runner, you are probably used to looking at the forecast often to plan your running route, time and clothing. After all, we have to be ready for anything that nature may throw at us right? But what about other signs? What about being ready for the return of Jesus?

The bible tells us that no one, except for the Father, knows when that time will be. And it warns us to be ready at all times. Matthew 24:38-40 says, "For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man." Although the bible tells us about many of the things that will occur prior to Jesus' return, it does not give us a time or date. Throughout history people have tried to decipher the clues so they would know when to be ready. That's pretty risky if you're waiting for the "right time" to follow Christ. Jesus goes on to warn us to, "“keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him." v. 42-44

Being unprepared for the weather may just leave us cold or with a case of frostbite at best. But being unprepared for the return of Jesus may leave you left behind, "Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left. Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left." v. 40-41. This is the one race you don't want to miss! Make sure you're ready. If you haven't accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior, please don't wait any longer. Simply pray this prayer: Heavenly Father, I know I'm a sinner in need of salvation. I believe that you died on the cross to save me from my sins and that you rose from the dead. I repent of my sins and ask that you come into my heart and be my personal savior. Forgive me Lord for the way I have lived and guide me through my remaining days. In your precious name we pray Jesus, Amen.

Lord, thank You for all those who prayed that prayer. I pray that we would all feel a sense of urgency to warn others others of the consequences of putting off the decision to follow you. Help us to boldly proclaim the truth each and every day. In your most precious name we pray Jesus, Amen.

If we are the body

"so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it. Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it." 1 Corinthians 12:25-27

If you have been running for any length of time, you probably have experienced, or are experiencing, an injury of some sort. Funny thing is, the injured area is usually caused by a weakness in a connecting part of the body. For instance, runners knee is most often caused by weak thigh muscles and plantar fasciitis can be caused by a tight achilles tendon. Achilles tendinitis is most often caused by tight or fatigued calf muscles and IT Band Syndrome is most often caused by tight muscles in the legs or hips or by weak hip muscles. God designed our bodies and its many parts to function as a whole, a healthy whole, with each part doing its job. When one part is weakened, fatigued or overworked, it can't do its part and the whole body suffers.

The same can be said about God's body of believers. Romans 12:4-8 tells us, " For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us." We all have different roles in the church and in the ministry. But the body is only as healthy and productive as it's individual parts. When one part is weak, we are all weak.

And regardless of how you feel or think about your role, all parts are necessary and important regardless of their size and function. A hand can't do much without the fingers and it is useless unless attached to an arm. A big toe isn't very pretty but try walking without it. Get the picture? We need one another, "He makes the whole body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love." Ephesians 4:16. Healthy, growing and full of love.... together we can be that body. Together we can make a difference when we remember that together we are the body of Christ.

Heavenly Father, thank You for making us stronger as a whole. I pray that we would daily encourage and build each other up. May we all grow stronger as individual parts to strengthen the body as a whole. What a blessing to be included in the body of believers and to serve you in any way. May we daily work together to do your will and to be an example to others. In your precious name we pray, Jesus. Amen.

Worth the effort- Cold weather running

"In his kindness God called you to share in his eternal glory by means of Christ Jesus. So after you have suffered a little while, he will restore, support, and strengthen you, and he will place you on a firm foundation." 1 Peter 5:10

If you ran outside the last couple days you might
be scratching your head wondering where Fall went. With temperatures dipping 30+ degrees below normal in the second week of November, preparing for the cold weather running may have caught you unprepared and somewhat "exposed", excuse the pun. Seriously though, dressing for the weather is very important if you want to protect yourself from the elements and avoid hypothermia and the dreaded "burned lungs". Here are four basic tips to keep you safe, warm and running happily despite the drop in mercury:

1. Dress in layers - Wearing several thin layers of clothing helps trap warm air between each layer keeping you considerably warmer than if you were to wear one heavy layer.

2. Wear the right fabrics - Materials such as polypropylene, capilene, and some wool/synthetic blends wick moisture away from your body and keep you as warm and dry as possible. Avoid wearing cotton because it doesn't wick moisture and also has very little insulating ability, which will leave you wet, cold and uncomfortable.

3. Wear a protective shell - It's critical that you wear some sort of waterproof windbreaker or shell (Gore-tex or nylon is best) to protect you from the wind and precipitation.

4. Cover exposed skin as much as possible - A hat and gloves are absolutely necessary once the temperature dips below freezing.  If it's really cold, you can cover exposed areas such as your face with Vaseline to reduce the potential of frostbite. http://www.active.com/running/articles/9-tips-for-running-in-cold-weather

By now you may be asking yourself if it's really worth all the trouble. In one word, yes. The best part about cold weather running is the reward it brings... faster times. Running through difficulty can be like our walk with Christ. It too comes with a reward but requires dedication, a willingness to press on in every circumstance and a faith that will not give up, give in or back down.  Whether running, working, helping a neighbor or simply going to the grocery store, Colossians 3:23-24 reminds us, "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving."

Isn't it nice to know that an inheritance awaits us and our struggles won't last forever? God promises us that, after we have suffered for a little while, He will not only "restore, support, and strengthen" us but "will place you on a firm foundation." That's a promise He will keep rain, snow, sleet or shine... and even cold. Can I get an Amen?

Heavenly Father, thank You for being with us through the trials of life. Thank You for the lessons they teach us, for the strength they give us and for the knowledge they provide that You are always with us through it all. May we constantly strain forward to what lies ahead no matter the obstacles in our path. In your precious name we pray, Jesus. Amen.

It was Love

"When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners." Romans 5:6

Wow. Running can get expensive. From shoes to gloves and entry fees to travel expenses, the cost can add up quickly. Ask any runner why they do it though and you'll likely get the same answer, because they love it. Ahhh.... love. It can make people do crazy things. It's inspired many sappy songs and been the source of much happiness and rejoicing.

But the greatest thing love ever inspired anyone to do came with the heftiest of price tags - death on a cross. Christ came for no other reason than to save us from our sins and to give us the gift of eternal life. We didn't have to earn it and there was no entry fee required. He knew the cost and yet He did it anyway, "Then I said, ‘Look, I have come to do your will, O God—as is written about me in the Scriptures.’” Hebrews 10:7. Jesus was born to die, simple as that. And not just for those who loved him back. Romans 5:7-8 says, "Now, most people would not be willing to die for an upright person, though someone might perhaps be willing to die for a person who is especially good. But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners."

It wasn't nails that held Him on the cross, He had the power to call on the angels of Heaven to rescue Him, "Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?" Matthew 26:53. It was love. Pure and true. There is nothing we can ever do or say to repay that love. But we can share the greatest love story ever told with others so that they might come to know Him too. That could be the greatest act of "sharing it forward." Tell someone today. Tell them that Jesus loves them. It might be the first time they have ever heard it.

Heavenly Father, thank You for dying on the cross to save us from our sins. Thank You for loving us while we were dead in our sins and for continuing to love us through all our imperfections. May we be so overwhelmed with the love You have for us that we can't help but share it with other people. There is no greater thing we could do for a friend or stranger. Help us to be bold, compassionate and willing to share the greatest love story of all time. In your precious name we pray, Jesus. Amen.

Control yourself

"So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin." James 4:17

At a recent marathon, there was a runner who, near the very end of the race, cut across the field to shorten his distance. When another runner called him out on it, he replied that "it was okay because the mileage on his GPS watch was measuring correctly." While that made perfect sense to him, he was still cheating and at risk of being disqualified. It seems we can always find a way to justify the things we want to do - to somehow word them in a way that makes them okay. In his mind, since the course went a tad bit over the 26.2, it was okay for him to correct it himself and only for himself. He failed to take into consideration that his disobedience put him at an unfair advantage over the other runners and could possibly have allowed him to win a medal that wasn't rightfully his. All runners in a race have the same rules and are expected to follow them in order to claim the prize.

Our walk with Christ is the same. God has given us all the same set of rules to follow without exception. 1 Corinthians 9:24-25 says, "Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. Every athlete exercises self-control in all things." and verse 27 says, "I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified." When tempted to do the wrong thing, and temptations will come, we have to exercise self-control. Vocabulary.com defines self-control as: the quality that allows you to stop yourself from doing things you want to do but that might not be in your best interest. God defines it as obedience.

Like the runner in the story, the temptation to "cut corners" can happen at any time in our lives especially when we are weak or worn out -what a shame it would have been to run a good race only to be disqualified steps away from the finish line. When overcoming wrongful desires,  1 Corinthians 10:13 gives us this promise,"No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it." Through Christ, we have the power of self-control. Use it to do the right thing and finish strong.

Heavenly Father, thank you for giving us the strength to overcome temptations. No matter how we may try to justify sin,  help us to remember that breaking a commandment is always a sin to matter how we try to disguise it. May we weigh our actions against your Word when we are in doubt of the right thing to do. Help us to run a good and honest race throughout out whole life. In your precious name we pray, Jesus. Amen.

Gobbler Grind Marathon and Half Marathon 2014

"Let your eyes look forwardfix your gaze straight aheadCarefully consider the path for your feetand all your ways will be establishedDon’t turn to the right or to the leftkeep your feet away from evil." Proverbs 4:25-27

*Yesterday was World Running Day and what better way to celebrate than with a long run? Several TEAM 413 members and I joined almost 900 runners yesterday to run the 18th Annual Gobbler Grind Marathon (151 runners) and Half Marathon(704 runners) in Kansas City. It turned out to be a perfect day for finishing 26.2 miles (or 13.1 for some). The race started promptly at 8:30 a.m. following the National Anthem. We were off and running through the paved trails that would begin and end in the Corporate Woods area of KC. There were a couple of challenging hills while running through the residential area connecting the trails but really none to speak of otherwise. The aid stations were ample and stocked with water, gatorade and gels. What the race lacked in crowd support (only bicycles and pedestrians were allowed to navigate on a majority of it),they made up for in cheery volunteers. If you enjoy the peace and quiet of nature, you will love this race. It was a very well organized run with huge finishers medals and even bigger age group award medals. Their professional free race photos were an added bonus. Paired with their reasonable entry fee, and you've got a fantastic race. Thanks to all the volunteers!

And what a difference a year makes. I attempted this race last year only to miss the crucial transition at "the split" (point where the marathoners and half marathoners separate). The temperature was in the single digits on the windchill, most of the volunteers had not shown up and only those runners who enjoy pain and suffering made an appearance. With no one to follow and my head in the clouds, I realized the mistake many (cold and lonely) miles later...too late to retrace my steps and correct my mistake. After finally making it back to the finish line with roughly 6 miles left to go, I explained  the situation to the race director. Then, after declining to step over the "mat",  I took the marathon medal and a well deserved DNF (Did Not Finish) and ran the course until I had made up the necessary mileage (I had vowed to do this before accepting the medal). Rather than choosing to be upset though, I chose to use that time to encourage other runners as we passed. What a laugh my friends and I had over this! After the fact of course.

Thank God for messes such as these. What a learning experience they can be. It's a reminder that we can all get off-track, even when diligently chasing after Christ and his path for our lives. If you think you know where you're going, you better check again. Without consulting Him at every turn, "keeping your gaze straight ahead", you can really get yourself "lost".  When you find yourself off-track,  and we all will from time to time, you have a choice to make - realize the mistake, repent and immediately get back on course or keep running on the path you're on hoping it will lead to something good. Let me remind you though, there is nothing good apart from Christ, "You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing." Psalm 16:2.

Maybe you have gotten off course today? Praise God that He is the God of second chances. Micah 7:18 says, "Who is a God like you, who pardons sin and forgives the transgression of the remnant of his inheritance? You do not stay angry forever but delight to show mercy." You can never run far enough that the Lord won't follow you with forgiveness. God replaces our "Did Not Finish", with a "Did Not Fail" if we will simply get back on course and let Him lead, "The Lord is good and does what is right; he shows the proper path to those who go astray." Psalm 25:8. By following His lead you will make it to the finish line and claim the "victory through our Lord Jesus Christ." 1 Corinthians 15:57

Heavenly Father, thank You for trials, pitfalls and the wrong turns we make. While they are never pleasant, they provide us an opportunity to witness your unfailing forgiveness, love and guidance. May we learn from them and grow through them. Remind us daily that we can never run so far that You will not be there to pick us up and set us on the right path when we go astray. May we always be looking for the "proper path" to take. In your precious name we pray, Jesus. Amen.

He wants it all today

"He answered, "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind'; and, 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'" Luke 10:27

Do you have boxes for different parts of your life? Do you separate who you are at work from the person you are at home and certainly from the person you are at Church or with your "runner" friends?  Does Jesus fit nicely into one of those boxes only to be taken out when needed and then nicely put back? Well maybe it's because you don't really understand who God is and what He requires, or better yet, how big God is and what He demands. Colossians 1:15-20 tells us this, '"The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy."

Wow! That is a big God - A Supreme God that cannot and will not be contained in any box or cubbyhole. He wants all of you and will take nothing less. Deuteronomy 10:12-13 says, "what does the LORD your God require of you? He requires only that you fear the LORD your God, and live in a way that pleases him, and love him and serve him with all your heart and soul." To live in a way that pleases Him and to love and serve Him with all your heart and soul requires you taking Him out of the box and letting Him rule over your whole life. It requires giving Him the control over every part of you, including work, home, running and your family.

God wants it all...every part of you, today, tomorrow and every day thereafter. And what He offers in return is better than any thing you could ever imagine. In exchange he offers us peace (Psalm 119:165) in this life and then eternal life in the next (1 John 5:11). Talk about thinking outside the box!

Heavenly Father, thank You for wanting to be in every aspect of our lives. I pray that we allow You to rule over every part of us, giving us wisdom, peace and strength to get through every day. May we never limit your power in our lives by excluding you from portions of our life. I pray that we would surrender all we have to You today and let You reign over us (every part of us). In your precious name we pray Jesus, Amen.

Find your quiet pace

"But when you pray, go away by yourself, shut the door behind you, and pray to your Father in private. Then your Father, who sees everything, will reward you." Matthew 6:6

Did you ever notice that, In Matthew 6, Jesus instructs us how to pray before He instructs us what to pray? Only after He commands us to go away by ourselves, shut the door behind us and pray to our Father in private does He give us what to pray...the Lord's prayer (v.9-15). Coincidence? Of course not. Does it make a difference in what order we do things? Absolutely. By shutting the door "behind you" and shutting out the world, you can free yourself from life's burdens, deadlines and worries and give your uninterruped attention to Christ. We need His presence and instructions for the day, and every day, as Psalm 143:8 tells us, "Let me hear Your lovingkindness in the morning; For I trust in You; Teach me the way in which I should walk; For to You I lift up my soul."

It's no wonder then that so many people use running as a way to close the door on the world and open another to God. As a busy parent, wife, husband, caretaker, etc., sometimes going into your closet (KJV) and shutting the door doesn't assure you of uninterrupted, quiet time with God. Getting out and going running can. No one wants to follow us on a long run right? Running assures solitude! What better way then to get away? And there is that added bonus - exercise calms the mind and body allowing a person to think more clearly and hear God more powerfully. What a gift exercise can be.

The best part is that anyone can do it. Your quiet pace is the perfect place where you can find Jesus. Some of us are quicker and some slower but God is our running partner at any speed. While getting out for a run or walk is a great way to spend time alone with the Lord in prayer, it's not the only way. Make it a priority to set apart time for Him any way you can. "Then your Father who sees everything, will reward you."

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of the Holy Spirit. Thank You that, through the death of your Son that we can come directly to You anytime, anywhere and anyway. Your presence is a gift beyond measure that we don't deserve and may we never take for granted. Spending time, alone and uninterrupted with you is a blessing not a burden. May we crave that time and search for it as "treasure". In your precious name we pray, Jesus. Amen.

Help a friend

"Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others." Philippians 2:3-4

Fox News aired the following article today:

High school runners disqualified for helping opponent finish race

Two high school runners in Minnesota have been disqualified in the state girls cross country meet for helping an opponent who fell. Senior Kailee Kiminski, of Esko, and junior Tierney Winter, of Janesville, forfeited the race last weekend after assisting Jackson County Central freshman Jessica Christoffer cross the finish line. All three were disqualified due to a high school league rule prohibiting the assistance of another runner. "I just got tired and I fell, and it wasn't good, and then there were two girls that helped me ... helped me finish and it was really nice of them," Christoffer told KEYC-TV. "I'm really thankful for them. It means a lot to me. It means I accomplished my goal of running at state and doing well." Winter said she had no choice when seeing Christoffer fall just 50 meters from the finish line. "I couldn't leave her there," she told the station. "I saw a couple of pictures online before, I've seen girls help each other out, so I was like, I'll help her out and we'll see what happens ... I wouldn't want to be left out there if it was me, so I just thought of myself there, too." Winter helped Christoffer "just to be a friend," she said. "A friend of a runner I guess," she told the station. http://www.foxnews.com/sports/2014/11/04/high-school-runners-disqualified-for-helping-girl-finish-race/

What a story! If it were you, would you have made the same decision? John 3:17 says, "But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him?" How easy it would have been to pass the fallen runner by. It happens all the time in sports. After all it's a competition right? While doing the right thing may get you disqualified by the world's rules, God qualifications have a different set of commands.. to unselfishly love others considering them better than ourselves. The world says to win at all costs and God calls us to love at all costs.

May you follow the example of these young girls and choose to help pick someone up regardless of the cost -  and to do it, "just to be a friend".

Heavenly Father, thank You for stories like this that remind us what running is all about. It's not about us Lord, but about sharing You through it. It's about helping others we meet at the expense of sacrificing our own goals. May we always remember that our ability comes from You and is given to us only to serve You. Help us to be an example of your love everyday. In your precious name we pray, Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!!!

I wanna say thank You

"And you will say in that day: “Give thanks to the LORD, call upon his name, make known his deeds among the peoples, proclaim that his name is exalted." Isaiah 12:4

Do you ever take the time out to thank God for what you DO have? I mean like the simple things we all take for granted? While at the Bass Pro Marathon expo this weekend, I really had a gut check on that one. There was so much activity and excitement going on at Friday night's packet pickup, no one seemed to notice the man who walked in, several steps behind his energetic family, carrying a black case. For some reason he caught my attention and my heart. As I looked closer, I noticed how thin he was and how ashen his skin appeared. The bag he was carrying had clear rubber tubes extending from the top and leading up under his shirt. I surmised that he was probably carrying a portable dialysis machine. As his family left him on the bench to rest and headed off to the festivities, I fought back the tears as I silently thanked God for my wellness and prayed for him and his family. In contrast to everyone around this man, he appeared so out of place. Here was a man, probably once strong, weakened by a condition he had no control over. And here were hundreds of other people passing him by not considering that only by the grace of God were they able to participate in this race. I'm sure he would have given anything to be the one acquiring the packet to run 13.1 or 26.2 miles. Yet, he wasn't.

Unfortunately, most of us don't realize how priceless the blessing of good health is. No amount of money in the world can heal or save you when you're facing a fatal disease or virus. Yet, we don't thank God daily for what we DON'T have. If you're cancer free today, thank God. If you're able to run or walk today, thank Him. If your children are bouncing off the walls with energy today, thank the Lord. Be grateful for all those things you DON'T have. There will come a day when we will all face sickness, aging and physical hurdles. If today is not that day, rejoice! Philippians 4:4 tells us to "Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!"

If you have today, you have a purpose - It's up to you to decide how you will use it. There's a quote I've read many times that says, "Today is God's gift to you. What you do with it, is your gift to Him." The day will pass before you know it, what are you waiting for?

Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us this day. Thank You for the ability to get out of bed and raise our hands in praise to You. Thank You for the ability to share the gift of salvation with others. I pray that we would all use this day to be a blessing to someone else remembering that it is indeed a gift. May we never take our health for granted and may we love and minister to those who are sick or in need of a helping hand. In your precious name we pray, Jesus. Amen.

Bass Pro Marathon and Half, 5k 2014

"But those who trust in the LORD will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint." Isaiah 40:31

Prerace getting ready to head out to the start line after preparing ourselves with some praise, worship and prayer.

Prerace while we are still friends.
What a fabulous race this was! With the morning's lows dipping into the 30s and a strong wind, it was a blessing to sit inside the heat of the White Rock Convention Center (part of Bass Pro) to attend the 6:15 am prerace prayer and devotion. While listening to the Sons of the Silver Dollar sing praise music, we were warmed by the fireplace and then were motivated to "press on" and be a blessing to others by Chris Gillespie (founder of TEAM 413). Following the devotion, we headed to the starting line (7am start) to begin our adventure! What day day it was going to be... I was running the full marathon with Kiki Gillespie who, after a 14 year break from marathons, had finally given in to my urging her to "just do it." and let me pace her for a finish. One thing was for certain, she would either hate me or love me by the end of the day.

As usual, Bass Pro did not disappoint any of the runners. From the starting line anthem and a public prayer for all the runners (yes! a blessing to all those running for safety and strength), we were off and running. The water stations (and lots of portapotties), aid stations and medical personnel exceeded expectations. Many of the local neighborhoods that were on the course put together their own "cheer squads" with themes, costumes and music. Gotta tell you, they were all a welcome distraction and each one different. Loved this part of the race! Every volunteer was cheerful, motivating and ready to help. This really was a fabulous race. The best was at the finish line - huge medals and a post race meal of pizza or Q'doba. I was dreaming of food from mile 3 to 26.2 so gladly helped myself to both (and some chocolate milk). God willing, we will be back next year - yes, that means me and Kiki. She finished, she still loves me and she even gave me her bowl of Q'doba when her belly was too upset to eat it. A blessed day indeed!

Post race and she still loves me
* To keep us motivated, we had brought an external speaker hooked to my race belt. We were on stride with the 5 hour pace group for some time when I could tell that Kiki's energy was getting low. We were doing the Galloway method (run/walk) so were going back and forth with them. We had been conserving the speaker battery until we really needed it (we really needed it then). As God would have it, we turned it on as Chris Tomlin's song, I Will Rise began to play. Kiki and I lifted our hands in praise, running, and letting Him strengthen us. Overcome with emotion, we began to sing out loud, just a soft volume we thought only we could hear. Within a few seconds, the pace group had caught us and we could hear the voices of many of them joining us as the chorus began to play, "And I hear the voice of many angels sing,"Worthy is the Lamb" and I hear the cry of every longing heart, "Worthy is the lamb". For a brief moment, we were in uninterrupted praise to the Lord in the middle of a marathon course in Springfield, MO with other people in search of the strength to get them through...the Source of which we were joined in praise for. Coincidence? No way.

Wherever you are, and whatever "job" God has given you, you can be that person to help others. While the bible says, "those who trust in the LORD will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint", sometimes we need to be reminded of His promises. Sometimes we just need someone to come along and remind us. Will you be that person?

Heavenly Father, thank You for such a glorious day. Thank You for giving us the ability to run and for the honor of sharing You through it. Thank You for the strength you provided today, for letting us soar and not grow too weary to finish the race. May we forever praise your name. In your precious name we pray, Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!!!
