There is Nothing God Cannot Do

“Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, “So shall your offspring be.’” Romans 4:18 NIV

In a heartwarming story titled “ RUN-BELIEVABLE Runner finishes 36 marathons in 36 days despite doctors warning she’d not live past 16” published Wednesday, it was reported that fitness coach Sophie Holmes, 32, set the record by completing the Edinburgh Marathon. Sophie, who has cystic fibrosis, has now raised £25,000 from the challenge which started with the London Marathon. She is the first person with the disease to do 36 marathons in 36 days. Cystic fibrosis causes mucus in the lungs and, at age four months, doctors said Sophie, from Southend, Essex, would not live past 16. She said: "My determination to survive and thrive and to defy the odds has been born probably from as young as I can remember.” Wow right?

And you know, when it comes to defying the odds, the Bible tells us that “Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” In other words, despite all the odds stacked against Abraham’s wife, Sarah, to bear a son at her advanced age, Abraham was determined to trust the promise God had given him and was blessed with Isaac by doing so. Which means, if God can bring life to a 90-year-old woman’s dead womb, there’s absolutely nothing He can’t do… no matter how it might appear through human eyes.

So, no matter what odds you might be facing today, choose to trust God my friend. He is bigger than any disease, any disappointment, any disaster, and any of our biggest doubts. And He can definitely, definitively, and undeniably defy the biggest odds.

Heavenly Father, thank You for being the only God who can call those who are dead in their trespasses and sin to new life in Jesus. Talk about defying the odds! Help us to trust You in the same way Abraham did Lord that we might boldly walk out our faith for others to see and emulate. It’s in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Be Strong and Speak Up

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9 NIV

In a story titled “Runner spots county workers dumping trash behind Macon-Bibb park” published Tuesday by WGXA News, it was reported that a Middle Georgia resident said he notified county employees Friday morning after seeing workers dumping trash in the back area of a public property.
Out for his usual morning run in Macon-Bibb's Carolyn Crayton Park, Lee Long said he began to notice something unsightly piling up… For Long
, to see county workers doing the dumping in the back of the park, near the softball fields, was unsettling.
"I was shocked. It's one of those things where Bibb County is really big on cleaning up illegal dumping, and to see employees do it themselves was a little disappointing." Before Long contacted WGXA News, he took the matter to Macon-Bibb County,

And you know, when it comes to seeing something wrong and having the courage to say something about it, the Bible commands all believers to expose the unfruitful and evil works and deeds of darkness (works and deeds that are increasing every day). Which means we must speak up when the Lord calls us to speak, no matter the hostility and hate we will receive by doing so. Which also means we must heed the command to “be strong and courageous,” something that is easy to do only when we remember and truly believe that the same God who went with Joshua into the battle is the same God that will go with us into the battle, fulfilling the promise to be with us wherever we go.

So as you look around at all the darkness in our world today, refuse to be afraid or discouraged my friend. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never overcome it. Trust in that promise and be bold.

Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding us that we have no reason to fear once we have placed our trust in You. Over and over again, You have proven yourself faithful and we know You won’t stop now. Help us to graciously speak up when we are called to Lord so that we can do our part in bringing the darkness to light. It’s in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Bass Pro Midweek Motivation - Get Outdoors this Month

Hello runner friends!
Welcome back to the Bass Pro Fitness Series
MIDWEEK M😊TIVATI😊N blog!

Now let’s get started by talking about what’s happening in the month of June… National Great Outdoors Month! And June 1st is National Trails Day! Which means this Saturday is the perfect time to ditch those city streets and start the month off right by running, walking or hiking some trails. Unfortunately for me, I don't live close enough to the Dogwood Canyon Nature Park (where my favorite dirt paths are located) to incorporate their trails into my training program as many of you might, but I do have trails near my home as I know you probably do as well (at least within driving distance) if you aren’t close to the iconic Dogwood Canyon Trail Run routes. If you're not sure where your local trails are located, check out the Missouri Hiking Trails list that AllTrails has come up with and make plans to get out into nature by yourself or with some friends or family.

And you know, while there are many benefits to exercising in general, outdoor activities (aka getting out into the great outdoors) such as running, hiking, biking, or exploring local areas benefit the mind and body in ways that indoor exercise can't. For instance, studies have shown that people who spent time in nature experienced less anxiety, depression, and anger than their urban counterparts. One particular study compared two groups of adults who participated in a nature walk at an urban park with one group led through busy streets with heavy traffic. Participants rated their moods before and after the walk. After completing the walks, both groups were assessed for anxiety, depression, and anger levels. The researchers observed that those who walked in nature felt happier than those who passed through urban environments. As someone who's exercised in both environments, I would concede wholeheartedly with the researchers that a run completed out in nature makes a person way happier. That's why it's called the great outdoors! It's great!!

But don't just take my word for it, check out what MYACARE had to say about the overall Benefits of Exercising in the Great Outdoors:

It can be more fun than an indoor workout. Working out in nature can help to relax and unwind after a stressful day. It is also a great way to enjoy the weather while getting the heart rate up.

Exercising in nature can help burn more calories than exercising indoors because natural environments make the body work harder. This is because it forces the maintenance of balance to keep up with the activity being done. For example, walking uphill burns more calories than walking on flat ground because it takes more effort for the muscles to move the body, countering the extra resistance of gravity and uneven terrain.

The outdoors offer increased sunlight exposure. Sunlight exposure helps boost mood, regulates the sleep cycle, and even helps in living longer. When people spend time outdoors on their breaks from work or school, they report feeling more refreshed and less stressed afterward.

It's free. There is no cost associated with getting outside and enjoying the fresh air. You can walk or jog around your neighborhood or go on a hike in a nearby park without spending any money at all.

Here are the mental and physical benefits of outdoor activities compared to the gym:

Mental Benefits:

There are many mental benefits associated with outdoor activities. For example; Hiking: It can be a very relaxing activity that helps de-stress from work or other responsibilities. It presents an opportunity to spend time with your friends or family while enjoying nature together. A person gets a chance to learn new things about themselves while hiking, such as how far they can walk without getting tired or how long it takes for them to stop sweating after reaching a mountain peak. These insights can help improve health by enabling better dietary and lifestyle choices.

Walking: Walking at least 10,000 steps per day will help in losing weight and improving health. The benefits of outdoor activities versus gym workouts are numerous. While some people may feel more comfortable working out in a gym, there are many advantages to exercising outside.

Outdoor Activities Can Reduce Stress
Getting outside can be an excellent way to reduce stress. Exercise releases endorphins that make you feel happy and relaxed. It also allows you to take time away from your busy life and focus solely on yourself.

Outdoor Activities Improve Mental Health

Exercising outdoors has been proven to improve mental health. Studies have shown that spending time in nature can boost creativity and improve cognitive function. Being around plants and greenery can also boost mood and reduce anxiety.

Outdoor Activities Can Help Improve Sleep
Exercising outdoors early in the day can promote better sleep patterns as this helps regulate the circadian rhythm - the 24-hour process that controls the sleep-wake cycle. According to research published in the journal Nature, exercising during daylight hours can help reset the natural clock so that falling asleep is easier at night. It also helps reduce daytime fatigue due to inadequate sleep or excessive sunlight exposure.

The physical benefits:

According to a study, outdoor activities are as good, if not better, than indoor activities for improving physical fitness. This is because they provide a greater range of motion and promote more muscle activity. Indoor activities are often repetitive and involve only one or two muscle groups at a time. This can lead to injuries, especially if not properly warmed up and stretched before the workout. In contrast, outdoor activities utilize multiple muscle groups simultaneously and require movement in all directions rather than in just one direction repeatedly. A good example would be riding an elliptical machine vs running outside. When riding an elliptical machine, there is no impact on the joints, so it is much easier on the body than going out for a run, where every step involves shock absorption through joints and bones.

Other positive impacts that outdoor activities have on the human body: Exercise is great for health. It helps improve mood and reduce stress levels, which can help prevent serious health problems like heart disease or diabetes. Exercise also helps strengthen muscles and bones, which can help prevent injuries while playing sports or doing other types of physical activity. When exercising outside, especially in the mornings, more vitamin D is absorbed than indoors. Studies have shown that Vitamin D helps prevent depression and optimizes physical performance. According to a 2016 study in the journal of Psychophysiology, people who exercise outside have lower heart rates and blood pressure compared to those who work out indoors or in a gym.

Exercising outside can help reduce stress and anxiety by lowering cortisol levels in the body. Cortisol is a hormone that helps deal with stressful situations by releasing energy through increased blood pressure and heart rate. When there is too much cortisol in the body, there is a higher level of anxiety or depression symptoms experienced. Exercising outdoors also gives us an opportunity to meet new people while getting fresh air and sunlight, which can help improve mood and boost self-esteem. It also increases energy expenditure, reduces stress, and improves physical fitness.

So there you have it friends. There's no better time than now to get out into the great outdoors for some exercise and some quiet time. It's good for your mental health, physical health, and your spiritual health. Spend time in nature as often as you can, and you'll reap benefits far beyond your imagination.... benefits you'll never experience inside! Happy Running!

Be a Person Others can Take Inspiration From

“When the time drew near for David to die, he gave a charge to Solomon his son. I am about to go the way of all the earth,” he said. “So be strong, act like a man,” 1 Kings 2:1-2 NIV

In an inspiring story titled “80-Year-Old Woman Runs Record-Breaking 5K”published last week, it was reported that Decorated masters runner Jan Holmquist just added another new record to her resume. Clocking a time of 24:08 at the Great Bear Run in Massachusetts (which also doubled as the official 5K of the New England Road Race Grand Prix Series), she improved the age group record for the 5K distance by over a minute and ran the race next to her granddaughter. Holmquist just turned 80, and it was her birthday wish to make 5K history. When a CBS News reporter asked Holmquist, who has been an avid runner since her late 30s, if she was “too old for this,” she simply laughed, and advised anyone else looking to take inspiration from her “...to start. Just set a goal.”

And you know, when it comes to being someone others can take inspiration from, “when the time drew near for David to die, he gave a charge to Solomon his son” that we would all do well to follow. He told him to “be strong” and “act like a man.” David, a man known for his great courage, leadership skills, and a steadfast love for God despite his many imperfections, went on to explain that a man of God would know God’s laws and obey them. Doing so, David told Solomon, would cause him to prosper in all he did wherever he went. Do you just love that or what?

So let us do all that we can to know God’s laws and obey them my friend. Our unworldly behavior by doing so will not only set us apart from nonbelievers but will undoubtedly inspire many people to seek the One David loved with all his heart.

Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding us that men and women of God will act differently than the world does, and by doing so will be people that others can take inspiration from. Help us to seek and love You with all our hearts, minds, and souls Lord. It’s in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Remember and Repent

If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14 KJV

Like hundreds of other runners around the United States this Memorial Day morning who have the day off, I will be joining friends and fellow patriots for a long run. This won’t be just any ordinary run though. We will be putting forth purposeful steps to honor the memory of our nation’s fallen military heroes— those brave men and women who sacrificed their lives to give us the freedoms we enjoy today—by joining in a circle of remembrance before setting out to log some bittersweet miles while carrying our American flags in an effort to remind those around us that this day isn’t about barbecues, parties, and relaxation… but about paying tribute to those who have earned it.

And you know, when it comes to remembrance, it’s plain to see that we are a nation that has, for the most part, not only failed to remember that we are free only because of the sacrifice of thousands of brave men and women who fought and died for our freedoms, but we are a nation that has forgotten God as well. And because of that, we are now a nation experiencing increasing lawlessness, spiraling moral decay, and a growing lack of love and compassion for others. Not all hope is lost though. There is a cure for our condition. And it’s this… we must humble ourselves, and pray, and seek His face, and turn from our wicked ways. It’s only then that we will hear from heaven, and God will forgive our sin, and will heal our land. In other words, we must remember, repent, and return to God.

So as you go about your day today, thank God for the eternal life He granted you by the death of His Son Jesus Christ on the cross my friend. And then take a moment to pray, pause and remember those who gave their lives so you and I could be free.

Heavenly Father, thank You for Jesus and His sacrifice. He gave His life so that we could be free from the penalty of sin. And thank You for all the brave soldiers who died to give us the freedoms we now enjoy. Lord, today cause us to consider how far we have strayed from You and to turn back before it’s too late. It’s in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Trust your Heavenly Coach

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6 NIV

In a story titled “Athing Mu Nursing Sore Hamstring, Will Not Run at Prefontaine Classic” published by Runner’s World Wednesday, it was reported that Mu’s coach, Bobby Kersee, announced that he would not be allowing Mu to participate in the Prefontaine Classic 800 Meter race on May 25 because of lingering soreness in her left hamstring. Kersee told Runner’s World it was not worth the risk to race on it… Kersee said all decisions regarding whether to compete are made combining input from Mu and himself, and that the highest priority is ensuring she will be ready for the first race of 800-meter qualifying at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials on June 21. Mu’s training could return to normal as soon as next week, he said. “She’s a veteran, if she’s healthy, she can make the team,” Kersee said. “And so, if I injure her before, I’m gonna be called a fool; if I don’t race her before, I’m gonna get [criticism]. So I have to do the math that’s going to put her on the team, and so whatever that math is between now and the 21st, that’s what I’m gonna do.”

And you know, when it comes to trusting a coach enough to put your future into their hands, you and I would do well to consider that a good coach, like Kersee, takes into consideration all the facts before giving counsel and makes your readiness their highest priority. Which means that we can completely and wholeheartedly trust our heavenly Coach who knows everything about us, since He formed us with His own hands. He knows our purpose and knows what needs to happen in our lives to ensure that we are ready to fulfill that purpose. Therefore, as the psalmist knew, we must trust Him with all our hearts and lean not on our own understanding. In all our ways, we are to submit and surrender to Him, with complete confidence that He will make our paths straight. Do you just love that or what?

So knowing that all the decisions we make, both big and small, have the power to shape our destiny, let us consult our Coach for guidance each and every day so we stay on the right track my friend. This is the best way to ensure that we are ready to meet Him face to face one day.

Heavenly Father, thank You for being a God that loves us so much that You would personally coach us through the Word and the Holy Spirit. Teach us Lord to both hear, seek out, and obey all your instruction. It’s in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!

The Meek become Mighty with God

“The angel of the Lord came and sat down under the oak in Ophrah that belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, where his son Gideon was threshing wheat in a winepress to keep it from the Midianites. When the angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon, he said, “The Lord is with you, mighty warrior.‘“ Judges 6:11-12 NIV

In a story titled “From Aaron to Zumstein Drive, Columbus runner completes city marathon, one block at a time,” published yesterday, it was reported that the corner of Columbus Street and Ohio Avenue hosted a unique celebration on Saturday morning as Doug Owsley, accompanied by a dozen running enthusiasts, celebrated the completion of a running accomplishment years in the making. Over the course of an almost three-year project, Owsley, 53, covered more than 7,392 miles, amounting to 10,947 city streets. His accomplishment was tracked meticulously through the City Strides project — a global initiative that challenges runners to cover every street in their cities… Owsley's journey through every corner of Columbus started in a rather unassuming manner. He initially joined a run club and through social connections, learned about City Strides. The site not only tracks each street a runner covers but also fosters a community of runners who share similar goals.

And you know, when it comes to commendable journeys that began in a rather unassuming manner and ended in victory, the Bible gives us the story of Gideon who went from “threshing wheat in a winepress to keep it from the Midianites” to defeating the Midianites and becoming the “mighty warrior” the “angel of the Lord” prophesied that Gideon would be. Under God’s guidance, Gideon went from being a man in hiding, separating the wheat from the chaff at the foot of a hill out of sight of the enemy, to vanquishing the same enemy in battle. His journey from fear to faith was so remarkable, in fact, that his name is listed in the Hall of Faith.

So, knowing that God uses ordinary people to do extraordinary things, be obedient to whatever journey God calls you to go on my friend. Like Gideon, you might feel too small to do anything memorable for the Lord, but God makes the meek mighty and turns wimps into warriors.

Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding us that You can use anyone who is obedient to fulfill your purpose and plan, no matter how big it might be. Help us to remember that by your strength, the unqualified become qualified and that we can do anything You call us to do. It’s in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

BASS PRO MIDWEEK MOTIVATION - Embrace the Suck

Hello runner friends!
Welcome back to the Bass Pro Fitness Series
MIDWEEK M😊TIVATI😊N blog!

Now let's get started by talking about the obvious. Summer is knocking at the door in the form of heat and humidity. And while the temps are going to go up and down for a while before the hottest season of the year settles in for good next month, now's the time to "embrace the suck" and begin to mentally and physically prepare ourselves for those serious, suffocating, and slow slogs that are on the horizon.

This was the thought I had Sunday upon walking out the door with my husband for our usual early morning run before church and being hit with the humidity I knew would make it's way to Missouri but still wasn't ready for. "Yikes," I said to my husband. "This is going to be an ugly one." As is our routine though, we set out together and remained side by side for the first two miles before going our separate routes for some personal meditation time. It wasn't very long, though, before I received a text from Sweet Larry (aka my husband) that simply said, "Current situation" and contained the above photo of our Lottie Girl. Upon receiving the message, I immediately called him to learn that I wasn't the only one struggling. This duo that runs together regularly were too. Crazy how the heat and humidity will affect a person (and animals), isn't it?  The day before the three of us ran 10 miles with no problem... but then the heat.
*On a side note, Lottie and Larry both made it safely home and recovered quickly.

So here's the deal... no matter how much you love it or hate it, it takes approximately two weeks to acclimate to heat and humidity and there's very little you and I can do to speed up the process by more than a day or two. However, we can adjust our attitudes during the 14 or so days it takes our bodies to make the physiological changes they need to endure summer running by embracing the suck. What exactly do I mean by that? Well.... Michael Fisher explains the Marine jargon this way:

Embrace the suck. What exactly does that mean?

That means you’re in a situation that just sucks, and you need to embrace it. Meaning suck it up and deal with it.

When you are in “the suck,” it can mean many things, but my experience is related to the Marine Corps. It was one of the first phrases I heard when I put my feet as a young recruit on yellow footprints in MCRD San Diego.

“Welcome to the suck!”

Yet I never considered the Marines Corps a sucky place, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. “It” was the discovery of the self and what dedication one could have to do things you had never dreamed of before you joined. The definition from my vague memory was any undesirable condition that you can imagine. That was the suck.

Military jargon is a blend of acronyms and expletives. It has its DNA intertwined with war laced with psychological and physical trauma, tinted with the blood, body and soul of everyone who has ever served. That is what makes up the suck.

What is unique about military jargon such as this is that it builds camaraderie. It is part of the culture. Just like most any occupation, whether it be saving the world or writing code or delivering babies, each has its jargon. Most may have quippy sayings. Yet military slang and jargon are usually the most base, raw and deeply rooted in stress-inducing situations.

To embrace the suck means to have discipline. Having that mental toughness to see the hard work through to the end. You continue with the hard-charging attitude of being able to keep moving forward and never give up. When one Marine would say to the other it was to say, “Dude, we have been here before, it sucks. Now adapt and overcome and quit complaining.”

When you “embrace the suck” is when you are able to push through that barrier — whatever that barrier may be — either physical or mental, to reach your destination. This is the time for you to realize if you have the guts to stick it out. This is an internal discussion and battle, one that rages in parallel with the one in the physical world that you are wrestling with. This is where you ask yourself, “Can I do this?” Flip the coin, some have it and some want it, but not all embrace it.

The suck is not the end all. It is at that point where you decide to keep going (embrace) and persevere. Not everyone wants to do it. But when you do decide to embrace it, you are stronger and better for it. The suck is eustress. The antidote to the suck is to improvise, adapt, and overcome. When you feel the suck sucking you down, pause, hit the reset button and redo it. Keep moving forward. Keep marching. Discipline and consistency. Drive and motivation. Growing and taking the leap. Discovering the new you.

Go forth and be brilliant.

So there you have it friends. That's some great advice! You and I certainly can't change the weather but we can change the way we view it by embracing the suck. And believe it or not, heat training has benefits beyond being able to run in the heat. Numerous studies have shown that training in heated conditions, two to three times per week for 20 to 90 minutes, can produce a multitude of beneficial training effects. These include: Lower core temperature at the onset of sweating, increased plasma volume (Plasma is the liquid component in your blood. If the volume is increased, you can send blood to cool your skin without compromising the supply carrying oxygen to your muscles), decreased heart rate, increased oxygen consumption, and improved exercise economy. The result? We can run faster and/or more efficiently in all temperatures. Those are all significant reasons to "embrace the suck" and get out there with a smile on your face so you can slowly, smartly, and safely start acclimating

Happy Running!

We Need Hard Times

“I am the vine and you are the branches. The one who remains in Me, and I in him, will bear much fruit. For apart from Me you can do nothing.“ John 15:5 BSB

In a story published by Runner’s World last week titled “Athing Mu: “Last Year Was Pretty Tough,’” it was reported that In 2021, Athing Mu put together arguably the greatest season for an American 800-meter runner—at just 19 years old. But after bursting into the spotlight at the Tokyo Olympics, Mu has struggled to find a balance between intense training, racing, and carving out time for herself. Mu spoke to Runner’s World ahead of the race about her unconventional 2023 season, current training progress, and ambitions outside of being an athlete. “[Last year] was pretty tough,” Mu said. “Coming into a new area being basically a full-time professional, versus in college being a student-athlete, is way different. I just had a whole bunch of changes going on, so I didn’t really know how to balance it out. But I think that kind of taught me what I need to do this year.”

And you know, while it’s never fun or easy to go through hard times, as believers we can rejoice in knowing that hard times teach us (in a way that nothing else can) that apart from Christ, we can do nothing. You see, it’s easy to forget God when the path is smooth and free from changes, especially when a person is young, able-bodied, and prosperous. Which is the very reason we need to experience tough times that cause us to surrender our pride and self-dependency and that push us into a deeper intimacy with Jesus… something that reaps benefits now and for eternity.

So, if you’re facing adversity today, take heart my friend. Cling to Jesus, knowing that the closer you get to Him, the closer He will get to you and the more fruit you will bear.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the reminder that believers must face hardship for their faith to grow and be tested. Help us to remember that You have a plan and a purpose for our lives and that You work all things together for our good and your glory. It’s in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Be Vigilant at all Times

“He lies in wait near the villages; from ambush he murders the innocent. His eyes watch in secret for his victims; like a lion in cover he lies in wait. He lies in wait to catch the helpless; he catches the helpless and drags them off in his net.” Psalm 10:8-9 NIV

In a harrowing story published by Los Angeles 4 News last week, it was reported that a man was arrested in an attack on a woman who was running on a beach path in Santa Monica when she was dragged by her hair before witnesses intervened. The attack was reported Monday morning in the 2000 block of Ocean Front Walk. The Venice resident was running on the beach path when she was grabbed from behind by her ponytail, knocked to the ground and dragged toward restrooms. Witnesses stepped in to stop the attack and called police. He was identified as 48-year-old Malcolm Ward Jr., a homeless man who was on parole at the time of the arrest, police said. Ward was charged with felony counts of kidnapping, assault with intent to commit rape, and violation of parole, according to the police department statement. The victim suffered minor injuries, police said.

And you know, while this type of depravity and evil behavior is definitely on the rise, it’s certainly nothing new as the writer of Psalm 10 clearly understood and of which Martin Luther said “There is not, in my judgment, a Psalm which describes the mind, the manners, the works, the words, the feelings, and the fate of the ungodly with so much propriety, fullness, and light, as this Psalm.” You see, these cowardly people lie in wait to ambush and murder the innocent as Malcolm Ward did. They aren’t manful or honorable enough to openly fight those who might effectively fight back but secretly watch and wait for the opportunity to hurt the helpless and drag them off to do them harm.

So, knowing that lawlessness will only increase as the end days draw nearer, keep your eyes on Jesus and be aware of your surroundings at all times my friend. After all, you and I aren’t just in a physical battle to keep our bodies protected from danger but in a spiritual battle to keep our hearts, minds, and souls safe as well, from an enemy who is (and will continue to be) relentless in his pursuit to destroy us.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the reminder that believers are never truly safe in this world. Knowing that, please help us to remain vigilant both physically and spiritually by training in the Word and working to keep ourselves physically fit every day so we can both discern and fend off the attacks of the enemy. It’s in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!

Check your Behavior

“On judgment day many will say to me, ‘Lord! Lord! We prophesied in your name and cast out demons in your name and performed many miracles in your name.’ But I will reply, ‘I never knew you. Get away from me, you who break God’s laws.’” Matthew 7:22-23 NLT

In a story published yesterday by ABC News, it was reported that Australian marathon runner Liam Adams has said he "was in complete shock" when he discovered he had not qualified for this year's Paris Olympic Games. Adams, 37, who competed at Olympic Games in Rio and Tokyo believed he had qualified for this year's event. While Adams was not part of the 70-man list who completed a race in Olympic qualifying time, he believed his world ranking would allow him to join the 80-runner field. However, the remaining spots have been given to "universality places" which is for athletes who come from "under-represented National Olympic Committees" according to the International Olympic Committee. But Adams told ABC News he, and many others, believed the World Athletics would fill those remaining places based off world rankings instead. "What ended up happening was I finished the qualification period in 74th position out of the 80," he told Charles Brice on News Breakfast. "Through everything that I had read, through everything that Athletics Australia had read and even the other nations we were all under the impression that you finished in the top 80 and you'd be going to the Olympics. When I found out the shocked news three days after the qualification period had ended that — that the universality athletes would displace the 10 athletes that had qualified in rankings, it was a complete shock.”

And you know, as the Bible clearly tells us, there is coming a day of judgement when many people who are under the impression they are saved will be in ‘complete shock’ upon hearing the words, “I never knew you. Get away from me, you who break God’s laws.” You see, many of the people who seem to be true believers, even going to church and doing good works in the name of Jesus, will be exposed for claiming to know Christ but not having a relationship with Him. These aren’t people who have lost their salvation but people who never truly had it, no matter how it might have appeared. These are people who never truly surrendered their hearts and lives to Jesus and so continued to “break God’s laws” despite their religious facade.

So be sure to check your behavior so you don’t find yourself in complete shock on the day Jesus comes to pronounce judgment my friend. Be sure that you know Him and He knows you so that you can have complete confidence that you will spend eternity with the Lord.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the reminder that a Christian’s behavior must match their claim to be a follower of Your laws and that a true believers life will bear good fruit. Help us to search our hearts to see if there is anything in us that we need to change so we will hear the words,”Well done good and faithful servant.” It’s in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Happy Running!

Do it First Thing in the Morning

“Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.” Mark 1:35 NIV

In a story titled “Here’s what you can learn from a mom of three who runs a half-marathon a day” published Monday, it was reported that, in order to keep her 13.1 mile daily run streak going, Helen Ryvar goes through the same routine every night. She checks the weather forecast, lays out her running clothes, puts her running shoes by the front door, charges her cellphone and flashlight, and sets the alarm for 4 a.m. By 4:15 a.m., she’s out the door — rain or shine. The key to her success, Ryvar says, is “running at the same time every day — in her case, before her kids wake up.” Experts think the same.“The key is to find some protected time so it is just part of the routine,” said Dr. Michael J. Joyner, an expert on human performance and exercise at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. “This is why many habitual exercisers go first thing in the morning.”

And you know, when it comes to learning something important about making ‘protected time’ a part of our routines, you and I would do well to consider the example that Jesus set when He walked among us in the flesh. Time and again “very early in the morning, while it was still dark,” Jesus would retreat to a solitary place to spend alone time with the Father before starting the day — something that would pay dividends later as Jesus tirelessly went about His day ministering to the lost, filled with the abounding energy and needed direction from His time spent in prayer. The great missionary Hudson Taylor was also said to be a man of prayer who prioritized time alone with the Father. His common practice was to spend two hours in Bible reading and prayer, often between 2 and 4am, when he would be undisturbed. He did this even when he was traveling and staying in crowded rooms partitioned by a curtain.

So if you want to run the spiritual race with endurance (and I hope you do), follow the example of Jesus my friend. Getting up early might be a struggle at first, but I promise that you’ll reap benefits beyond what you can ever imagine — benefits so great that you’ll soon be thankful that you’ve made a habit of arising “very early in the morning” before anything or anyone distracts you.

Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us the example of Jesus to follow. Throughout time, it’s clear that the most successful Christians prioritized time with You above all else and did whatever it took to meet with You first. Help us to do the same Lord, so that we can run the spiritual race with all confidence and endurance. It’s in your precious name we pray Jesus. Amen.

Now let's get started by talking about a FREE, FAMILY FRIENDLY, and FUN event that's open to EVERYBODY and happening this FRIDAY that you do NOT want to miss.... the Bass Pro Shops Fitness Series AmBASSador Led Training Run!! The folks at BPFS had this to say about the upcoming adventure: Whether you are new to running or just looking for some extra miles, we welcome YOU to join the fun! The group will meet at 5:30p and will plan a 4-mile run in beautiful downtown Springfield. AmBASSadors will be running and jogging a variety of paces to accommodate all fitness levels. After the run, the group will hang out at Mother's Brewing to socialize and connect to this great community! Participants will also receive $1 off beer! This event is FREE and is just an opportunity to get everyone connected! Let us know if you are coming!

Sounds like the most fun you can have on a Friday night right? I sure think so!! I mean what could be more enjoyable and entertaining than running a few miles with the group of crazy people who love the Bass Pro Fitness Series of events so much that they talk nonstop about it at every opportunity and constantly rock their race gear everywhere they go?

And just to entice you a little more, I've asked the 2024 Ambassadors to tell you a little bit about themselves (most all of them responded). That way, when you show up to the run and see them, you'll recognize them by name, know where they're from, why they're so passionate about spreading the love of the Bass Pro Fitness Series, and what their favorite race is. So without further ado, here we go!

I’m Willard/Springfield born and raised. I love the fitness series because not only is it consistently the most well ran series of races, but because it gives back to so many charities that are close to my heart. Everyone involved in the series are just amazing people and I love to support that attitude and positivity in life. The marathon is my favorite simply because of the camaraderie. So many familiar faces are out there in the course and the spectator support is so amazing! And the course holds my PR - Cari Harrison

This is my first year as a bass pro ambassador, I have been a runner since middle school and lived in Springfield my whole life so far! I ran my first marathon in November of 23, which was the bass pro. I have ran the half twice with BP before that. I realized, I want to help so many others when it comes to running and I hope being an ambassador will lead people to get out more and see what races BP offers!! I’m excited for this year and all the races I have planned. My goal is 12 half marathons this year, with a PR of 1:45. The race I’m looking forward to in BP fitness series is marathon weekend! - Emilee Goddard

From: Baring, Mo but lived near Springfield the last 7 years. Favorite Event: Dogwood Canyon Challenge. But a close second will be Finley. Soo excited for this new race. Why I love BPFS: Supporting local races is important to me, for they give back to local organizations and charities that impact us locally. BP does an amazing job allocating resources to support charities and focuses on conservation as well. My step-mom is a wildlife biologist for MDC, so our childhood instilled principles of conservation and protecting wildlife. Bass Pro is an amazing advocate for wildlife conservation and these events inspire us to do the same. - Samantha Hoffman

I am from Ash Grove, MO and moved here with my husband back in 2018 to be closer to family. I am passionate about the Bass Pro Fitness Series because of the people it brings together. After we moved back, one of the first things my mother-in-law had me do was sign up for the Bass Pro Half Marathon, and then the Dogwood and a slew of other races. Of course I love the challenge, but it's become like another holiday for us when races come around. Everyone is in such good spirits, so supportive, and encouraging to the people around them. I love the outdoors and Bass Pro Fitness Series is all about getting people outside. If I had to pick a favorite, I'd say Dogwood is my favorite, so much so, we do the challenge every year so we get to be out there two days in a row. - Kimberly Mooneyham

I’m from Ozark, MO. I’ve been a BP Fitness Series ambassador since 2019. I’m passaionate about being an ambassador because the Bass Pro Fitness Series has given a lot to my family and I in the way of helping us create a life long love of being active and being outdoors. I want to share that with others. My favorite Bass Pro race has to be the Dogwood Canyon trail races. It is just a unique experience at one of the most beautiful places in the country. There is no other event like it. - Chad Johnson

I love training for races with the Bass Pro Fitness Series! By far my favorite race would have to be the Bass Pro Shops Cohick Half Marathon. I have completed several different events put on my Bass Pro Fitness Series however I have ran the Cohick Half Marathon more than all other events combined! I enjoy that I am able to train locally however often I would like to. I am able to run with friends and family nearby for training and for fun! When it comes to race day I am very familiar with the course I will be running. I have found it is much easier to hold training buddies accountable when we are close by and training regularly throughout the week. I have found that I enjoy the Cohick Half Marathon course so much as I know the area so well and the route is burned into my memory. I know where to expect more energy to be expelled and where I can take advantage of down hill and flat areas on the route. Half Marathons are a great distance for me as I know I am able to push as hard as I would like, most years within reason I am able to finish the course followed by a solid day of napping, and be ready for the next! - Kelley Flowers

I grew up in St Louis, then fell in love with a dairy farmer, so here I am in Ash Grove, Mo. I've participated in events across the state, traveling to Columbia and St. Louis, and even ventured to Illinois and Arkansas for events in neighboring states. However, those were more of one-time experiences. The events I can't imagine missing each year are the Bass Pro Fitness Series (BPFS) events! These events fully embrace the mindset of being with loved ones, giving your best effort with your current physical condition, all while surrounded by the grandeur of God's creation. The energy that the organizers and volunteers bring to these events makes you feel like you can conquer anything, just at the moment when you thought you couldn't possibly do it! It's hard to choose a favorite BPFS event because they are all of such high quality, but I do have a special fondness for Dogwood Canyon Trail Runs. Dogwood combines breathtaking beauty with extreme and unpredictable conditions. Sharing in such a challenging accomplishment creates bonds that are precious and not easily replicated elsewhere. For me, the value lies in the journey!! - Barbie Mooneyham

Marshfield Mo. I love Bass Pro fitness Series because of the positive, active people who coordinate all the events. Those who participate are so lucky to have such a great group of dedicated individuals in our community. Also, helping all the participants reach their goals is special to me. I love to cheer each of them on to the finish line. My favorite event is Dogwood. I have crowned myself Queen of Fire Ball Hill!!! - Heidi Thomas

Springfield, MO Favorite Bass Pro Races: Top of the Rock and Dogwood (Couldn't pick!) I love Top of the Rock and Dogwood for their uniqueness. Both races are truly nestled in nature and feel more tucked away from the rest of the world. The scenery is beautiful and I love hills. I'm passionate about Bass Pro Fitness Series because this series represents my favorite home town races. Also, I love how the fitness series engages people across Springfield from dedicated runners to people trying something new or dabbling with running. It's truly fun for all! - Rebecca Senn

Springfield , and my favorite BP race is Dogwood Canyon. The BP Series has a really special place in my running history. The races are managed so well, the amenities are top notch, and the people you encounter along the way during a race are great. My first time to run Dogwood was so challenging and so rewarding that I knew I would keep doing it. And I have! This will be my 9th time to run at Dogwood and my 10th time to do either the half or full during marathon weekend, and I have my half marathon PR on the Cohick course. - Charlie Hungerford

As a lifelong Springfield native and 34 year employee of BPS I have a passion for all things Bass Pro. Being a runner for over 48 years ties right in with the Fitness series. Being a trail runner any of the Dogwood Canyon races are my favorite. This year I plan on running the Conservation marathon for the first time. - Jimmy Brooks

Springfield, MO I run to stay healthy, mentally & physically. I run because I enjoy the alone time and the quality time with my kids. I run because I love nature and sunsets. I run because the running community is so positive and encouraging. I run to set an example of self-care to these girls. I run for the challenge, the high-fives, and the hugs at the finish line. I thought finishing my race was the best feeling, but I was wrong. Training with our girls and watching them finish their race is! My favorite race is the BPS Fitness Series half-marathon. - Rebecca Jeter

Currently living Ozark Missouri with my family! Why I'm passionate about the BP Fitness Series? Encouraging others to stay active and celebrating with them when goals are met!! And what your favorite BP race is and why? Run the Rock, because it is very challenging and rewarding at the same time. The scenery is also very nice! - Seth Jenks

Centerton, AR (for two months now) I am passionate about the Bass Pro Fitness Series because it allows me to share my love of running and the outdoors with others and inspire them in their personal fitness journey. My favorite Bass Pro Fitness Series race is the Cohick Half Marathon. It was one of the first half marathons I ever ran was such a great course and experience overall. - Caitlin Crouse

Originally an Air Force brat but now Springfield is home! Running is my therapy and Bass Pro is home base! It’s like running with your family! Testing yourself in your own backyard and knowing all your friends and family are either running with you or cheering for you! Nothing motivates more than running through neighborhoods lined with people who are out there cheering for you now matter if you are first or last and the work Bass Pro goes into making this happen shows through every year. Trust me nothing relights your spirits when you think you can’t do it than a stranger screaming how awesome you are! - Jennifer Young

I'm the only Ambassador that doesn't live in the Springfield area but down in Pulaski County. That doesn't stop me from getting to Springfield and running with my favorite people though! As so many of the other ambassadors said, the BPFS runners are like family. Which is why I love November so much. It's like a family reunion!!  I ran my first Bass Pro Marathon in 2008 and have been coming back every year (I'll be back pacing the 5:30 marathon group this year)! Is it my favorite race? It's my favorite 26.2 mile race in the whole wide world to be sure but the Dogwood Canyon 50k has my heart as well. There's something magical about those hills and the time of year that the run is held. Don't even get me started on how great the swag and the volunteers are! So I will say they are both my favorites! And the reason I am so passionate about advocating for the greatest race series there ever was? Because as a runner and a longtime running coach, I know how much it means to cross a finish line. And there's no better ones to cross than the finish lines at Bass Pro. There's an event and a distance for everyone. But no matter which one you choose, you'll come away smiling and ready to do it again! - Melissa Sharp

So there you have it friends. Coming out to meet the ambassadors is a great reason to join us for Friday's run. You'll not only have a great time but you'll hear even more reasons why the Bass Pro Fitness Series is the absolute best series you'll ever find! So make plans to join us. Hope to see you there! Happy Running!
