Labor for the right reasons

"Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain." 1 Corinthians 5:8

Labor Day means different things to different people...the official end of summer, the day white shoes are no longer worn, a day off from work and a weekend of parades, barbecues and celebrations. "Officially" though, it is defined by the U.S. Dept of Labor as," the first Monday in September, a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country."  This is the one day a year to celebrate our accomplishments and "officially" rest from the hundreds of other days we spend laboring in pursuit of wealth, position or some other reward.

What is your attitude towards work? Do you find it burdensome? Are you grateful?  God, from the very beginning, designed us to work, "The Lord God placed the man in the Garden of Eden to tend and care for it." Genesis 1:27-28, 2:15. And God is very specific that our attitude should be Christlike in all we do, "Work with enthusiasm, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. Remember that the Lord will reward each one of us for the good we do, whether we are slaves or free." Ephesians 6:7-8. Not only should our attitude be Christlike so should our motives, "Do not work for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life" John 6:27

We should work everyday as if we were working for Christ, with a joyful heart and our eyes focused on the eternal rewards of a life well lived. Since we can do nothing apart from Christ, including our jobs, today should then be a day to recognize and honor the One who provided them and gave us the ability to fulfill those jobs.  Don't leave God out of your celebration, make Him the center of it! We are nothing apart from Christ and we have nothing that He didn't give us, "From his abundance we have all received one gracious blessing after another."   Wow, what a reason to celebrate!! Happy Labor Day my friends. May you find time to sneak in a few miles before the day begins.

Heavenly Father, thank You for setting apart of day of rest and reflection.  I pray that we remember where our blessings come from - although we work for a perishable reward now, I pray we are ultimately working for the reward of eternal life and resting with You after our work is done. Meanwhile, may we work to the best of our ability with a thankful and joyful heart showing your love to others as we do so, that they might come to know you through our actions.  In your precious name we pray Jesus, Amen.

Our deserved wages

"But now having been freed from sin and enslaved to God, you derive your benefit, resulting in sanctification, and the outcome, eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." Romans 6:22-23

If you ask me, the best part of any job has got to be payday, the day you receive the benefits of your hard work. It's pretty simple really - you do a job well you get paid well, do a job poorly and you get paid poorly.  For the most part it's a pretty fair system, work hard and you will reap the benefits.  I wonder, though, if we would work nearly as hard if we weren't guaranteed payment in a swift and timely manner? You probably wouldn't think very highly of your employer if he withheld payment would you?

What if I told you that our ultimate President and CEO is doing just that? Withholding our deserved wages? The bible tells us that the wages of sin is death.  Since we are all sinners,  we are deserving of nothing less. But what if I told you that God, in His infinite love and mercy for us, has withheld payment of what we truly deserve and instead offered us the free gift of eternal life in Christ Jesus? And it gets even better... What if I then told you that this same God, "showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners." Romans 5:8, and that it is by nothing we have done that He offers this so that none of us can brag? "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. " Ephesians 2:8-9.

Isn't it great to know that we serve such a wonderful and mighty God? He gives us so much and asks for so little in return. He requires us to "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind'; and, 'Love your neighbor as yourself." Luke 10:27. Seems the least we can do for all that He has done for us.  Are you willing? The benefits are priceless.

Heavenly Father, thank You for sending your son to die on a cross to forgive us of our sins. The sins that make us deserving of death.  It's amazing to know that You loved us enough to withhold our wages and instead offered us the free gift of eternal life.  How can we ever thank you Lord? What can we do to ever repay You? The answer is nothing short of loving and serving You with all our heart, soul and mind...and even then we fall short.  But You love us anyway, thank You. In your precious name we pray Jesus, Amen.

God's blessings revealed

"But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me." 2 Corinthians 12:9

"I do believe if people see someone like me doing this they will for sure know that God is the reason. I have never been a good athlete. Seriously, I was always the last one picked. When playing games, I was slow and small." -Todd Raney

Can anyone relate to that? Being the last one picked or the one no one wanted on their team? I believe without a doubt that God gives us all gifts. Sometimes they just aren't revealed until God is ready for us to use them for His purpose. My friend, Todd, and I were talking about his upcoming race schedule which includes running 10 marathons, one ultra and one half this fall.  He discovered running just recently and found he was good at it.  The small frame and short stature that made him an unfavorable pick for basketball or some other school sports, made him perfect for running!   Ephesians 2:10 tells us that, "we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." God absolutely planned for my friend to be made for this very purpose and this very moment in time. Had his talent been revealed sooner, it might have been wasted. God's timing is as perfect as His faithfulness.

"God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another. Do you have the gift of speaking? Then speak as though God himself were speaking through you. Do you have the gift of helping others? Do it with all the strength and energy that God supplies. Then everything you do will bring glory to God through Jesus Christ..." 1 Peter 4:10-11.  Our abilities and  talents (and possessions) are not our own.  They are a gift from God to us to be given back in the form of praise and worship.  What greater way to worship Christ than to use the gift of running to glorify Him!  To publicly acknowledge Christ as the provider of your strength is the ultimate thank you.  As Todd and I, and thousands of other TEAM 413 members around the world run races this season with the scripture "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." Philippians 4:13, emblazoned on our shirts, may we plant seeds that will lead others to Christ.

Your talent may not be running or anything even associated with it. But I promise you that He has given you an ability that you can use to bring Him glory. Pray that it would be revealed and use it for the purpose it was given... to bring glory to the Giver of all gifts.

Heavenly Father, thank you for everything You have given each of us.  I pray that each of us would use the talents, possessions and blessings that You have so graciously provided to us to lead others to You and to glorify your name.  Father, in everything we do and say, may we show the love of Christ so that others will want to do the same.  In your precious name we pray Jesus, Amen.

Defining Moment

"But Ruth replied, “Don’t ask me to leave you and turn back. Wherever you go, I will go; wherever you live, I will live. Your people will be my people, and your God will be my God. Wherever you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord punish me severely if I allow anything but death to separate us!”  When Naomi saw that Ruth was determined to go with her, she said nothing more." Ruth 1:16-18

When I was much younger,  I worked for a most wonderful woman who took me under her wing as her personal assistant (a tough job I felt totally unequipped to do). I do believe she saw something in me that I didn't see in myself.  She was the busy founder and president of a large company but still took the time to send out individual cards and gifts to her hundreds of employees and was generous in all parts of her life. That was 16 years ago and I remember many of the lessons she taught me and still smile when she comes to mind. Whether she realized it or not, she was my mentor, the person God put in my life to shape and mold me for a time and a purpose. Working for her was definitely one of the  "defining moments" in my life. Although the Bible doesn't use the word mentor, it frequently describes successful mentoring relationships: Jesus and His disciples, Barnabas and Paul, Paul and Timothy, Naomi and Ruth (one of my favorites), Moses and Joshua, Elizabeth and Mary (the mother of Jesus), and many others. All are great examples of people God brought together and the God-inspired actions they took to help one another develop and grow.

Consider what it means to be a biblical example and mentor to others, " Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good. Then they can urge the younger women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God. Similarly, encourage the young men to be self-controlled. In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us." Titus 2:3-8

If you're now in a situation to teach and guide another, don't take it lightly. You may be the only one to ever talk to that person about Jesus - you may be the only one to show them kindness, acceptance and love.  If you are in the position to be a mentor, remember that your words and actions can be the "defining moment" in someone's life. God put you where you are for a reason.

Heavenly Father, thank You for those people willing to step out and show your love to a dying world. My prayer is that we would be compassionate and caring to those we meet and listen to the Holy Spirit if we are to speak.  I pray that we will search for ways to do so.  May we be a light in the darkness to those searching for You.  In your precious name we pray Jesus, Amen.

Seek the important things first

"Listen to my voice in the morning, Lord. Each morning I bring my requests to you and wait expectantly." Psalm 5:3

Do you sometimes get so overwhelmed with things to do that you feel anxious or irritable? Do you ever skip a workout or run in your attempt to "catch up"? Ever forgo your alone time with God, making a mental note that you will "catch up" with Him later, and then haphazardly start on your to do list? Unfortunately we probably all have been guilty of doing one or the other. But who and what are we really working for? Are we not trusting God to meet our needs when we pursue our worldly ambitions before our heavenly ones?

He has given us all jobs to do while we are here (surely you didn't think you landed it on your own?). This is how He enables us to provide for our needs, the needs of our families and the needs of our church. While we should do our jobs to the best of our abilities as if we were serving Christ, "Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men," Colossians 3:23. - we should remember that, no matter what service we provide or job we perform on this earth, we are first and foremost a servant of the Most High and He is our first priority. Matthew 6:33 says, "But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you." Jesus is reminding us to seek His guidance and direction first and He will provide for the rest. In other words, He's got this...He can and will get you through the day and that to do list if you trust Him enough to pursue Him before anything else. Proverbs 4:11:12 gives us more insight on the benefits of seeking Him above all else, "I will teach you wisdom’s ways and lead you in straight paths. When you walk, you won’t be held back; when you run, you won’t stumble." He is our greatest friend, savior, teacher and coach!

When you're tempted to miss your morning run with God or your morning devotional, think of what you are really missing. You may not always have time to do a long run or read the whole chapter of Genesis, but any time spent with Him is valuable and just what you need to start the day off right.

Heavenly Father, You are such an awesome God. Thank You for giving each of us guidance for the day if we will only ask and spend time with You. I pray that we yearn for your presence day and night and are never satisfied being apart from You. May we always put you first and remember that we must be servants of Christ before we can be anything else. In your precious name we pray Jesus, Amen.

He is listening

"You have done many good things for me, Lord, just as you promised."  Psalm 119:65

Did someone forget to tell summer that it was about time to start packing up?  With the heat index of 101 today, I don't think summer got the memo.  Add in the humidity and it made for some very hot running weather. Halfway through my morning run, I stopped by the fountain in the park for a quick drink.  I pushed the button, running in place as I was waiting, and nothing came out.  Oh please Lord, let water flow from this fountain I prayed as I kept the button pushed down in hopeful expectation.  As the cool water finally spewed up, I was overcome with gratitude at how deeply personal the Lord is. He just gave me a drink!  Had it come up instantly, I would have missed an opportunity for God to show his great love for me.  Had I given up immediately, I would have missed the blessing entirely. I then wondered how many other times had I thrown in the towel just moments from encountering his grace.

In a world of fast food restaurants, express lanes, instagram photos and drive-through everything, we have become accustomed to having our needs met quickly - the sooner the better is the motto of many. But God doesn't work like that. Just as the farmer waits for his harvest to be ready, God knows when we will be ready. By patiently waiting for the right conditions for the seeds to grow, the farmer is rewarded with a bountiful harvest.  As we wait on the Lord, we too will have our rewards. " Dear brothers and sisters, be patient as you wait for the Lord’s return. Consider the farmers who patiently wait for the rains in the fall and in the spring. They eagerly look for the valuable harvest to ripen." James 5:7

1 Peter 3:12 says that, "The eyes of the Lord watch over those who do right, and his ears are open to their prayers."  There's two things then of which you can be certain, He loves you and He is listening.

Heavenly Father, thank You for your perfect timing. I pray that we are patient and trusting as You work out the details of our lives.  Help us to follow you in the times we feel like giving up.  I pray that we remember that You will do what's best for us, not what we think is best. It's in your precious name we pray Jesus, Amen.

I believe

"But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,"  1 Peter 3:15

Have you ever encountered people who will talk about everything in the world other than their faith? They will gladly tell you about the latest book they read, the newest restaurant in town or their favorite football team.  They may even give you a list of reasons why their team might win the Superbowl, or quote the last five years of their stats from memory.  Isn't it amazing what the human mind can remember?  What I find more amazing is that so many people have this idea that faith is a personal matter that should be kept to themselves.  While we certainly shouldn't be obnoxious or boisterous about our faith (that would certainly turn people away), we shouldn't keep it to ourselves either.

Before someone even wonders what we believe though, shouldn't they know by our actions? Without our ever having to say a word, shouldn't people see the love of Christ in us through the way we treat them and others?  Colossians 3:12 says, "Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience,".  If others are seeing compassion, kindness, humility and patience practiced in our lives, they are seeing Christ whether they know it or not. We can be a witness without ever saying a word!  By being consistent in our behavior and attitude, eventually others will want to know the secret to the peace we have - and hopefully ask the question, why?  It's then that we should be ready to give an answer, gently and respectfully of why we believe in Jesus Christ - and thus share the story of Salvation.

Can others see Christ in you without your ever having to say a word?  Are you prepared to give an answer when asked where your joy and peace come from?  Will you be willing to reply or do you believe that faith is a personal matter that should be kept to yourself?  Let me remind you that Matthew 10:33 says, "But everyone who denies me here on earth, I will also deny before my Father in heaven." It's pretty clear that our faith isn't a "personal" matter.

Heavenly Father, thank you for giving us second chances.  If we have missed an opportunity to show your love to someone through our actions, I pray today is the day we step out and do that.  May we always be ready to tell others the reason for our joy and peace - the true happiness that can only be found in you and is not dependent on circumstances.  You are the same yesterday, today and forever.   It's in your precious name we pray Jesus, Amen.

By God's grace

"As God's fellow workers we urge you not to receive God's grace in vain." 2 Corinthians 6:1

Grace is a wonderful thing.  Do you know that grace is mentioned 170 times in the bible?  I'd say that means it is important.  But do we really understand what God's grace is and how blessed we are to receive it?  “Grace” derives from the Greek, charis. In secular Greek, charis was related to chairo, “to rejoice.” As far back as Homer it denoted “sweetness” or “attractiveness.” It came to signify “favor,” “goodwill,” and “lovingkindness” — especially as granted by a superior to an inferior.

There's certainly none more superior than God and none as inferior as you and me.  So the grace granted by Him to us is a glorious thing - one we should not take for granted.  When's the last time you thanked God for His grace in your life?  Have you even taken time to notice that grace was being granted to you? Grace is, quite simply, God's unmerited favor in our lives.  It's the reason we are where we are and the only reason we will inherit eternal life.  Its the reason for the good things we enjoy and the blessings we boast about.  It's by nothing we have done to earn it, but given out of  God's great love for us. Ephesians 2:8-9 says, " For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-- not by works, so that no one can boast." Take the extra time today to appreciate what He has given you.  And then, today and everyday, take the time to thank Him.

"I am not what I ought to be. I am not what I want to be. I am not what I hope to be. But still, I am not what I used to be. And by the grace of God, I am what I am." -John Newton

Heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of grace.  I pray that we remember that it's only by your grace that we are saved and only by your grace that we have another day to serve you.  May we make the most of today and every day as a way of saying "thank you" for the blessing you have so freely given.  It's only in your precious name we pray Jesus, Amen.

Praise the Lord because in every moment Jesus Christ is Lord - The City Harmonic

The 5 step program to a better life

"And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God require of you? He requires only that you fear the LORD your God, and live in a way that pleases him, and love him and serve him with all your heart and soul. And you must always obey the LORD’s commands and decrees that I am giving you today for your own good." Deuteronomy 10:12-13

Sometimes the difference between living a purposeful life and a purposeless life is simply knowing what's expected of you. You certainly couldn't be the employee of the month unless you knew what your job was and what the requirements were. And yet so many people don't know why they are here. They spend their lives wondering, "What does God expect of me? What's my purpose in life? Where can I find the answers?" Thankfully, all the answers to life's questions are found in the Manual. Oftentimes though, it's just a matter of knowing where to look.

Moses, while speaking to the Israelites, made it very clear what God expected from them. He expects the same from us, "fear the LORD your God, and live in a way that pleases him, and love him and serve him with all your heart and soul. And you must always obey the LORD’s commands and decrees".

Wow, talk about a 5 easy step program to be the best you that you can be!  Here it is:

1. Fear God - "Fear of the LORD is the foundation of true knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline." Proverbs 1:7
2. Live in a way that pleases Him - "The LORD says, "I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you." Psalm 32:8
3. Love Him - "Jesus replied, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind." Matthew 22:37
4. Serve Him with all your heart and soul - "Only fear the Lord and serve him faithfully with all your heart. For consider what great things he has done for you." 1 Samuel 12:24
5. Observe His commands - "Loving God means keeping his commandments, and his commandments are not burdensome." 1 John 5:3

Following Christ is just as easy as the 5 step plan.  There's no reason to make it complicated. The Manual is there to answer absolutely any question you may have, solve any problem you may encounter and guide you through any trial or test you may be going through.   The rest is up to you...

Heavenly Father, thank you for giving us the Manual to guide us through this life.  I pray that we will consult It before starting our day so we are focused on You and what you want for our lives before we let the world sidetrack us.  May we live to follow you, serve you and love you Lord.  Help us to follow the plan for our lives you have so graciously given us.  In your precious name we pray Jesus, Amen.

The fellowship

"If anyone is ashamed of me and my message in these adulterous and sinful days, the Son of Man will be ashamed of that person when he returns in the glory of his Father with the holy angels." Mark 8:38

The Fellowship of the Unashamed

I am a part of the fellowship of the Unashamed. I have the Holy Spirit
Power. The die has been cast. I have stepped over the line. The decision has
been made. I am a disciple of Jesus Christ. I won't look back, let up, slow
down, back away, or be still. My past is redeemed, my present makes sense,
and my future is secure. I am finished and done with low living, sight
walking, small planning, smooth knees, colorless dreams, tame visions,
mundane talking, chintzy giving, and dwarfed goals.

I no longer need preeminence, prosperity, position, promotions, plaudits, or
popularity. I don't have to be right, first, tops, recognized, praised,
regarded, or rewarded. I now live by presence, learn by faith, love by
patience, lift by prayer, and labor by power.
My pace is set, my gait is fast, my goal is Heaven, my road is narrow, my
way is rough, my companions few, my Guide is reliable, my mission is clear.
I cannot be bought, compromised, deterred, lured away, turned back, diluted,
or delayed. I will not flinch in the face of sacrifice, hesitate in the
presence of adversity, negotiate at the table of the enemy, ponder at the
pool of popularity, or meander in the maze of
mediocrity.

I won't give up, back up, let up, or shut up until I've preached up, prayed
up, paid up, stored up, and stayed up for the cause of Christ. I am a
disciple of Jesus Christ. I must go until He returns, give until I drop,
preach until all know, and work until He comes.
And when He comes to get His own, He will have no problem recognizing me. My
colors will be clear for "I am not ashamed of the Gospel, because it is the
power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes.." (Romans 1:16)
By Dr. Bob Moorehead

Sometimes we just need a reminder of what it means to be an "unashamed" follower of Jesus Christ. He never promised it would be easy, only that He would be with us.  No matter where we go or who surrounds us, may we always be ready to do the work He has called us to.  Adversity will come but press on and keep "running the race."

Heavenly Father, thank You. Thank you for loving us so much that you sent your son to die on a cross for our sins. Thank you for loving us so much that you gave us the Holy Spirit to guide us, embolden us and comfort us.  May we be willing to share this truth and be unashamed of you in our words and actions. In your precious name we pray Jesus, Amen.

The dry spigot

"Now in the morning, when He was returning to the city, He became hungry. Seeing a lone fig tree by the road, He came to it and found nothing on it except leaves only; and He said to it, “No longer shall there ever be any fruit from you.” And at once the fig tree withered."  Matthew 21:18-19

What a beautiful morning yesterday was to get in a run-a short one I should say.  Unfortunately, with marathon day quickly approaching, my longest run could be put off no longer.  With the heat index of 100 and high humidity predicted for yesterday and the next 7 more, it seemed like a good a day as any.   How gracious God was to keep the temperatures below 80 until the last 90 minutes of my run.   As the day grew hotter, so did the water in my handheld bottle.  It was getting so warm as to be almost nauseating.   That's when I saw it.... the most beautiful sight a thirsty runner could ever see besides a fully stocked aid station....  a water spigot in the middle of the park.  Anticipating the cool water that was going to flow out of it the second I turned the handle, I poured out the remaining hot water I had.  And boy was I ready!  I turned the spigot and nothing!

How utterly disappointing.  I really thought water was going to come out.  It looked like a spigot.  It was certainly in the right place at the right time to appear as if it would produce water.  But it was dry. So many Christians are like that water spigot-content to look and act like a Christian but not willing to do anything to produce flowing water or spiritual fruit.  Jesus compared unfruitful "Christians" to the fig tree in Matthew 21.   The tree looked like it was producing fruit from a distance but, upon closer inspection, only produced leaves.  He cursed the fig tree "And at once the fig tree withered".

Matthew 7:16 says, "You can identify them by their fruit, that is, by the way they act."  and John 2:26 says,  "As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead."  No matter how much we try to look like followers of Christ, if we aren't truly faithful followers, we will never produce any fruit.  Like the spigot, it won't take long for others to realize that we are a dried up well.   Are you in need of refreshing today?  Do you find yourself producing more leaves than fruit?  Maybe it's time to reconnect with God and renew your faith.  John 4:14 tells us how, "But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life."

Heavenly Father, thank you for giving us second chances.  I pray that if any of us are not producing fruit, that we pray to you for forgiveness and guidance.  May we all be springs of refreshing to others that they might want to come to know you.  Give us an unquenchable thirst for your Word that we may learn to follow you with our whole hearts and be Christians that show our faith in the way we look, act and serve.  In your precious name we pray Jesus, Amen.

Love your shoes

"But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect"  1 Peter 3:15

Compliment a runner on his/her shoes and you will most likely hear the story of why or why not they are awesome.  You might even hear about how wearing them was the cause for their latest PR or cured them of shin splints. Seriously, runners love their shoes.  If they're road worthy, we are always ready to recommend them to a stranger.   And yet they won't last or really do anything more than help us run a race.  I've listened to so many runners give credit to, and recommend with passion, some material thing (like shoes, gels, supplements) for a great finishing time. But respectfully suggest to them that Jesus is the real reason and the conversation gets quiet.  It seems people are so willing to acknowledge something other than Christ as the reason behind their success. Why are we so afraid to share Him?

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 says "Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body."  Honoring God with your body means much more than just giving Him praise at church or in the privacy of your own home. It means publicly acknowledging Him for what He has done for you.   It means talking about the things that really matter.  Yes, it means talking about Jesus.

Get this.... 2 Corinthians 2:14 says, "But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and manifests through us the sweet aroma of the knowledge of Him in every place."  Wow!  He leads us in triumph so we can spread the knowledge of Him in every place.   God gives us the victory so we can give Him the credit.   I'll take that trade.   Talking about shoes is a great way to start the conversation but remember who is truly responsible for your success and I promise you it's not Nike!  Now that's something to talk about.

Heavenly Father, thank you for the ability to serve you.  You have given us all different gifts but the same reason for having them, to glorify you, bring praise to you, and bring others to you.  May we never be reluctant to share the true reason for every good thing in our lives.  In your precious name we pray Jesus, Amen.

And then...

"But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you." Matthew 6:33

And then I'll be happy.... What a deceptive phrase. When I get that new job, then I'll be happy. When the kids are out of diapers, then I'll be happy. If I just had a bigger house, then I'd be happy. If I just had more time, then I'd be happy. If my spouse would just do this or that, then I would be happy. What about being happy right now? Hebrews 13:5 says, " Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” Be content with what you have? Now there's a concept. If you have food on the table, a roof over your head and a car to drive to work, congratulations! You are blessed indeed. Did you know that almost half the world — over 3 billion people — live on less than $2.50 a day? Did you start your day off with a nice refreshing glass of water or enjoy it in your hot coffee? Consider that 783 million people in the world do not have access to safe water. This is roughly 11 percent of the world's population. http://www.compassion.com/poverty/poverty.htm    Certainly makes you appreciate it more I hope?

The United States is one of the 10 richest nations in the world where the majority of people have access to clean water and shelter. Yet it never seems to be enough. If you're waiting until, you fill in the blank, to be happy, I have news for you. You will never be happy. If you can't appreciate the simplicity of being content with the blessings God has granted, there aren't enough "things" in this world to satisfy you. Apart from Christ, there is no happiness. It can't be found in any person, place or thing. It can only be found in Christ. By making Him the center of your life, you can't help but rejoice regardless of your circumstances. Paul knew this when (while locked up in prison) he wrote, "I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength." Philippians 4:12-13.

Paul had lived as a rich man apart from Christ. And then as a poor man abiding in Christ. The choice was easy for Him. "Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ" Philippians 3:8. Don't wait for the and then to happen. Find your happiness in the priceless gift of knowing Christ. Everything else is worthless.

Heavenly Father, thank You for loving us even when we are not grateful for what we have. I pray that we will not take for granted the things you have blessed us with, big and small. Thank You for our homes, running water, electricity and food on our table. Praise your holy name for the things you have supplied out of the richness of your love. Your love and presence in our lives is priceless. Thank you Lord. In your precious name we pray Jesus, Amen.

First impressions

"Although you've never seen him, you love him. Even though you don't see him now, you trust him and so rejoice with a glorious joy that is too much for words.  You are receiving the goal of your faith: your salvation." 1 Peter 1:8-9

PhotoThe saying goes that "You never get a second chance to make a first impression."  Notice it didn't say a good or mediocre impression? This was a convenient thing for me last week as the first impression I made was probably what you would only call memorable.  My good friend, Laura, was scheduled to come by the medical office where I work (alongside my father, the doctor) to have her back adjusted as most runners have to do from time to time.  There was no one in the office as I saw her pull up through the large front windows. Showtime, I thought to myself as I ran to the front of the lobby and got down on my knees in front of the chairs by the front door.  As I was giggling, I could hear her talking to her friend.  Oh no, I forgot she was bringing a friend!  It was too late to do anything but jump up and yell boo! as they made their way in the door.  I don't think I've ever seen anyone jump so high or scream so loud.

After the girls caught their breath and we all quit laughing, I was introduced to my newest friend, Kim, who I knew would never forget my first impression.  What a chuckle we had as we talked like we had known each other for years.  But that's what God does, He gives us overwhelming joy.  While some people express their joy with smiles or hugs, I tend to get a little carried away.  And joy is a fruit of the spirit you know...Galalatians 5:22 says, "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,".

Sometimes happiness is just too much to keep to ourselves-after all, Joy and happiness is the best prescription for a fabulous day  "A joyful heart is good medicine," Proverbs 17:22.  Have a most blessed day!

Heavenly Father, thank you for your presence that brings so much joy.  May we rejoice today in the fact that, no matter what we are going through in this life, there is peace, joy and rest in the eternal life you have promised to all those who believe.  And to have the Holy Spirit to guide us is a blessing beyond comprehension.  What a reason to be joyous today!!  Thank you Lord for all you have done, are doing and will do through us.  In your precious name we pray Jesus, Amen.

Get back up

"Then he returned to the disciples and found them asleep. He said to Peter, “Couldn’t you watch with me even one hour?   Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak!”  Matthew 26:40-41

In the midst of training, have you ever set out intent on doing a certain number of miles only to fall short of your goal? Or totally blew it at a race after doing the proper training?  Maybe you failed to get enough rest or hydrate properly?  Maybe it was just one of those days?  Face it, we're only human as the saying goes.   This verse crossed my mind yesterday morning over and over as I struggled to finish the mileage I had set out to complete only to miss the mark.  With the clock counting down to my next marathon, it was a disappointment but not a defeat.  Oh well, I thought, it's just one of those days.  I'll just have to try again.

While Jesus was in garden of Gethsemane, He knew the time was approaching when He would be betrayed and arrested and He knew it was important for Him to pray.  He was going to need the strength only the Father could give.  He didn't ask much of the disciples, only that they keep watch while He prayed.  After finding them asleep,  He warned them of the weakness of the spirit only to come back  and find them asleep again for they "couldn't keep their eyes open." v.43.  "So he went to pray a third time, saying the same things again. Then he came to the disciples and said, Go ahead and sleep. Have your rest. But look—the time has come. The Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners."  Matthew 26:34.  How horrible the disciples must have felt!  They were given the simple job of staying awake and they failed miserably.

The thing to learn from this is that we will all fail.  Our flesh is weak.  As much as we strive to be like Christ, we will never "hit the mark".  But that's okay.  He loves us in spite of our imperfections and weaknesses.  In fact, He died for the very disciples who couldn't even stay awake to keep watch while He prayed.  He died for them, He died for me and He died for you.  Romans 5:8 tells us, "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.". We will all fail from time to time, but the real failure is staying down.  Proverbs 24:16 says, "The godly may trip seven times, but they will get up again.".   In the words of Toby Mac, "We lose our way,We get back up again.   It's never too late to get back up again, One day you will shine again, You may be knocked down, but not out forever."

Heavenly Father, thank You for loving us in spite of our weaknesses and shortcomings.  As much as we strive to be like You, we never quite make it.  What a gracious God you are to love us anyway and to send your son to die on the cross to forgive us of our sins.  You are surely worthy to be praised!!!  In your precious name we pray Jesus, Amen.

The gift

"God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another."  1 Peter 4:10

Thirty years ago, on August 5, 1984, Joan Benoit Samuelson won the first ever women's Olympic Marathon.  Prior to that, she was the first woman to win the Boston Marathon in 1979 setting
an American and course record.  She won the Boston Marathon again in 1983, this time breaking the world record.   There's no doubt that God graced her with an ability to run.  But she first had to overcome her fear of what others thought about her.  To quote her, "When I first started running, I was so embarrassed I'd walk when cars passed me.  I'd pretend I was looking at the flowers." She explained that girls didn't run in public then.

Oh my.  If she had let that stop her, she would never have gone on to do such great things.  She paved the way for women runners to participate in a "man's sport" and served as a role model for thousands of young girls.  Now in her 50s, she is an inspiration for runners entering their golden years by running two more sub 2:50 marathons and founding the TD Bank 10k to benefit different children's charities.

Had she listened to those voices telling her that what she was doing was silly, she would never have fulfilled the purpose God had gifted her for-the purpose for which He graced her with such an ability.   The bible tells us that God has given us all different gifts.  They are not to be hidden for fear of embarrassment, ridicule or judgement.   1 Timothy warns us not to neglect our gift, "Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through prophecy..." and 2 Timothy 1:6 says, "For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you...".   He didn't say let a portion of it shine, He said to fan it into flames!  Whatever talent, gift or skill you have been given, it is not to be kept for yourself,
"So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another. Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them" (Romans 12:5-6).   Look for ways to use God's blessings to be a blessing to others and glorify the Giver of all gifts.  We have everything we need to make a difference.  Will you be step out in faith and do that?

Heavenly Father, thank you for giving each of us special gifts.  May our eyes be opened to what that might mean for us.  May our heart be open to serving others with those gifts and may we never be ashamed of the Gospel or embarrassed to share it.  Give us boldness to serve you Lord with an all consuming fire.  In your precious name we pray, Jesus.  Amen.

Happy running!!!

Chasing the wind

"I denied myself nothing my eyes desired; I refused my heart no pleasure. My heart took delight in all my work, and this was the reward for all my labor.  Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind;nothing was gained under the sun."  Ecclesiastes 2:10-11

It doesn't take much more than glancing at magazines at the checkout counter to see that people are obsessed with "having it all".   Why else would so many of these publications be sold? Actors are idolized for their box office power regardless of their conduct off screen and women envied for their beauty and clothing.   There seems to be this belief that those things can bring happiness.  And isn't that what we're all searching for?  True happiness?

King Solomon had it all.  He had wealth, wisdom, fame and power.  Yet, when he looked back on everything he had obtained and accomplished he declared it all to be meaningless.  He compared everything in life that he had acquired or done to be a chasing after the wind.   Have you ever tried to catch the wind?   Try grasping it with your hands.  We can temporarily feel it as it passes but we will never be able to catch it or keep hold of it no matter how hard we try.  I guess you could say that it is impossible.  The same can be said of finding true happiness in anyone or anything apart from Jesus.  In all our accomplishments, even the big ones, our feelings of happiness are temporary at best.  There is nothing in this world that can offer lasting and eternal peace and contentment.

It's no wonder that so many "successful" people are drowning in depression and despair.  After finally achieving the things that they believed would make them happy, they realize that it was all just a "chasing after the wind."   The things of this world will never satisfy us.  Hebrews 13:5 instructs us, "Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.".  That is the key to true happiness... the knowledge and faith to believe that God is always there.  There is nothing in this world that can give us greater peace.   Do you trust in that promise?

Heavenly Father, thank You for always being there and giving us everything we need to be content. May we realize that true happiness can be found in You alone and that everything else is like chasing after the wind.  Help us to stay focused on You avoiding the influences of this world. May we find the peace we are longing for in Your presence.   In Your precious name we pray Jesus, Amen.

Rejoice in the day

"But Jesus said, "Let the children come to me. Don't stop them! For the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to those who are like these children."  Matthew 19:14

This is the best day of my life!  Have you ever heard little children say this?  Especially after a trip to the zoo, being given a new puppy or maybe a day with gramma?  When my daughter was smaller she would say this several times a week to describe any day that might include ice cream or a stop at the park.  It's now reserved for the bigger things like the new bike she just got. Aren't we the same as God's children?  The older we get, the more it takes to make us grateful.  We would do well to follow the example of children. They don't bring up yesterday, they don't worry about tomorrow, they just live for the day.  And today's blessings are all that matters.

We can spend so much time worrying about tomorrow or mourning over yesterday that we fail to realize that the blessing is THE DAY,  not what's in the day. God didn't have to give us another 24 hours but He chose to out of his never ending kindness and love for us. Isn't that enough to be thankful for? I think so. Psalm 118:23-24 says, " This is the LORD’S doing; It is marvelous in our eyes. This is the day which the LORD has made; Let us rejoice and be glad in it." The definition of rejoice by Merriam Webster is: to feel or show that you are very happy about something. So, if you are happy for the gift of another day, show it!  Joy and rejoicing come out of constant praise for all that God has done for us. It's a natural reaction to a deliberate action.

Philippians 4:4 says, "Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again--rejoice!". And Psalm 150:6 says, "Let everything that breathes sing praises to the LORD! Praise the LORD!".  With the heartfelt joy of a child, thank God today for all He has given you, for all blessings-big and small.  Enjoy your run today as you spend it with the Lord singing praises of thankfulness for the air in your lungs, the strength in your body and a purpose to use all your gifts to glorify Him.

Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us another day to praise You.  May we be eternally grateful for each new sunrise and opportunity You grant us to sing Your praises.  Wherever we are, let us worship You and keep a joyful song on our hearts.  May our love for You shine through.  In Your precious name we pray Jesus.  Amen.

Conquer your giants

"Reaching into his shepherd’s bag and taking out a stone, he hurled it with his sling and hit the Philistine in the forehead. The stone sank in, and Goliath stumbled and fell face down on the ground. So David triumphed over the Philistine with only a sling and a stone, for he had no sword." 1 Samuel 17:49-50

I love the story of David and Goliath.  It's a story of how faith can overcome any obstacle:  Goliath was a Philistine giant measuring over nine feet tall who came out each day for forty days mocking and challenging the Israelites to fight.  Saul, the great King of Israel, and his army were terrified of him.  David, sent only to the battle field to check on his brothers and not even a soldier, saw the situation and volunteered to fight Goliath without hesitation.  Armed only with faith in God, a sling and three stones, he took that giant down!

Several years ago, I was cornered by two vicious dogs on one of my favorite back roads.  It's only by God's grace that I escaped.  Since that day, I never ran down that road again.  In fact, I gave up every road where I knew there were dogs, fenced or not.  I was literally scared stiff even thinking about running by a dog.  Can you believe that even after praying on this continually (3 years!) I was still too frightened to attempt it?  But yesterday was the day!  With David in mind, I armed myself and began my run intent on facing my giant.  As I could feel my heart beating out of my chest, I ran past those dogs (the owners were ticketed and told to keep them in a pen) who were keeping their eyes on me the whole time as they barked to be released.  "Woohoo, I've done it!" I thought to myself.   As I continued on my run, happy with the conquest, I jumped out of my skin at a barking chihuahua.  I think I have a little more work to do on slaying that giant but at least I maimed him.  David had three stones, I'll just have to try again and again.

Is there a giant in your life that you need to slay?  Is there a fear you need to overcome? By following David's example, you can take down even the biggest and most feared of giants.  Your giant may be an addiction, an unhealthy relationship or any number of things.  With faith in God, you can overcome them all and be victorious.  If the first attempt is not successful, keep trying!

Heavenly Father, I know there are people struggling to overcome fear and obstacles.  I pray strength for every one of them that they may arm themselves with the faith that David had and slay their giant.  It's only by your strength and power that we can do anything Lord.  Let us glorify your name as we overcome our fears and proclaim your greatness for all the world to hear.  In your precious name we pray, Jesus. Amen.

Happy running!!!
